Software :: Apple Tweaks Software Update For Windows?
Apr 18, 2008
Apple has made changes to the latest version of its Software Update mechanism for Windows PCs after being lambasted for using the application as a trojan horse to gain an advantage in the battle for share of the web browser market.
The updater application has been installed on millions of PCs as part of iTunes, allowing the Cupertino-based company to push users the latest updates to the digital media application and supporting QuickTime software.
Last month, however, Apple began using Software Update to recommend that Windows users also download and install its fledgling Safari web browser, which the company claims is the "fastest and easiest-to-use web browser for the PC."
The move was met with considerable criticism from industry figures and pundits alike, who accused the iPod maker of crossing an ethical barrier in its attempts to rapidly muscle its way further up the browser charts at the expense Microsoft's Internet Explorer and other third-party Windows browsers, like FireFox.
At issue was the fact that Apple was pushing Safari upon users who had never used or installed a prior version of the browser. As a result, the company has now released a redesigned version of Software Update for Windows PCs, notes ZDNet, that separates updates to applications users have installed on their PCs from new products they have not.
The new version, labeled version 2.1.0.110, also offers users a toggle to turn off automatic software updates, though the box is checked in the "on" position by default. Yet another added feature offers to "ignore" selected updates, such as Safari.
The old version of Software Update for Windows (left) compared to the new version (right).
Nevertheless, Apple continues to ping Windows users of the new application to download and install its browser. And ZDNet further speculates that redesigned interface may foreshadow a move by the company "to shove more software onto Windows users" in the near future.

Apple on Thursday evening delivered to developers a new build of its forthcoming Snow Leopard operating system that addresses a number of outstanding bugs but also delivers a couple of interface tweaks.
"This Snow Leopard Developer Preview Update is recommended for all users running the Snow Leopard Developer Preview Build 10A394 or later," Apple said. "This update includes general operating system fixes for stability, compatibility, and security."
The new build, labeled 10A402a, weighs in at roughly 1.3GB and was distributed via Snow Leopard's Software Update mechanism. It's the second such build to arrive in that manner in as many weeks, signaling ongoing tests to the new version of the system's automatic software updater.
In their brief experiences testing the new build, people familiar with the software claim it to be more responsive overall, as Apple focuses on optimization and stability ahead of a release planned for this fall.
Additionally, developers have noticed a couple of obvious interface tweaks, the first of which has seen the Dock's contextual pop-up menus re-skinned in a charcoal motif with white text. In previous builds, these menus were know to sport the same interface as traditional Finder contextual menus, which include black text on a platinum backdrop.

Apple may also be fiddling with the design of other Mac OS X interface elements, such as slide knobs, which now appear to feature a deeper, more vibrant shade of blue.
At its annual developers conference last month, Apple said it plans to release Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard in September as a $29 upgrade for all owners of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

I'm planning on installing Windows 7 RC via boot camp when it comes out, but I've lost the Leopard disc needed to install the drivers. Apple's website has Boot Camp Update 2.1 for Windows Vista 32. will this work, in other words, does this have all the drivers needed for the installation?

I just purchased the new mbp with the stock 250GB @5400rpm drive. I'm looking to upgrade to a 320GB @7200rpm drive. However, I have already made customizations on my current drive such as the dock, dock icons, putting folders in the drawers, basically a lot of little tweaks here and there that took a decent amount of time.
If I opt to install a new drive and put the current one in a closure, is there anyway to transfer all of the tweaks I made to the new hard drive upon/after installation of the OS?

I'm not convinced that the drivers that Apple provides, even if they come from the hardware manufacturers, are as good as they could be. The reason why I say this is that, prior to installing Snow Leopard and Boot Camp 3.0, I had been playing Dawn of War 2 on an ageing MacBook Pro with an ATI X1600 chipset under Windows 7. What I found odd was that after I had reinstalled Windows 7 and used the Snow Leopard DVD to install the Boot Camp 3.0 drivers was that Dawn Of War started to complain that my display drivers were incompatible with the game. Figuring that I hadn't had this problem before I uninstalled the display drivers Apple provided (from ATI) via the Device Manager, restarted Windows and let Windows Update find drivers instead (again, from ATI). This seems to have sorted out the problem.
If you are having problems with drivers then perhaps letting Windows Update try to find them may be the answer as this seems to have worked in my case.

Having problems with the Audio, Brightness and eject button keys after windows xp automatic update. Buttons sometimes work after a shutdown and restart, sometimes not. Tried the Bootcamp 2.1 reinstall but didnt help much. Where the heck can i get drivers for the bloody thing?
Apologies for the lingo but im quite frustrated. it takes apple yrs to fix one problem but only for another to appear.
I already gave up on Realtek doing something about their crappy sound quality (despite releasing a new driver every two weeks) and the mighty mouse freezing after hibernation unless u press the left button like a man possesed!!

Apologies if there are other specific threads like this, I did do an MRoogle search but couldn't find one.I've just got a new 15" 2.66ghz i7 MacBook Pro, and have Windows 7 64 bit ready to install. My question is, once I have it installed, with all the Snow Leopard drivers and 3.1 update, should I continue to download drivers from the manufacturers's websites, or just stick to the ones that Apple hands out in their updates?I suppose I'm specifically asking about the NVIDIA drivers. Should I install the most recent drivers for the 330m, or again just stick to the Apple ones?

As far as I understand there is a bug that stops Windows 7 or Vista from showing up in the Start Up disk options in the preference settings.
So the only option is to go through the boot menu selection but unfortunately I am using the Apple wireless keyboard and holding the option key down doesn't bring up the boot selection screen. Is there anything I can do ... or am I forced to use a USB keyboard for now ?
For the record I have the Wireless Keyboard and Mighty mouse paired and working in Windows 7 ( The keyboard has occasional lag from the first keystroke input but is fine from then ) Its just that I get no response from keystrokes during boot up.

So, I was searching for OS X 10.6.3 update because someone had problems installing the one which came with Software Update (said after downloading that can't be expended) so when I opened Apple - Downloads there was no OS X 10.6.3! Only 10.6.2 and some other updates but no 10.6.3! So, have anyone else had issues installing it? Can anyone else find it from Apple's site anymore?

Apple on Tuesday evening posted Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.3 (4MB), a new upgrade to its RAW photo support for software such as Aperture and iPhoto. The update adds support for four high-profile cameras released earlier in the fall, including Canon's EOS-50D, Nikon's D90 and P6000, and Sony's A900. It also addresses problems handling output from earlier cameras as well as general reliability. The patch requires either Mac OS X 10.4.11 or 10.5.3 and later.[ View this article at [URL]

Does anybody have any information on when Apple are going to launch a PROPERLY upgraded iMac? They've just announced a new version with some upgraded integrated graphics, more memory and storage, but when are we going to see an iMac with Quad-Core processing and Blue-Ray? Let's face it, this is what everyone is waiting/hoping for. I've been waiting to buy a new 24" iMac for over a year - I've even got the money waiting in the bank! However I'm not going to buy until they properly refresh the range. We've seen the laptop range refreshed and the Mac Pro range upgraded, but they just seem to be dithering about a bit with the iMac. Why? I actually looked at just going for a Mac Pro instead of waiting, but they are so much more expensive than an iMac I can't justify it. C'mon Apple - I love your product but am waiting for the REAL upgrade!

For the MBA, the Dell Adamo is now a direct competitor. Do you think Apple is possibly keeping the same technology, and just working to make it thinner? or do you think they will keep the same height/weight, and upgrade the parts?

After updating earlier this week with the EFL Processor update and the Superdrive update, each time I bring my MBP out of hibernate or log on the CD drive starts to run like it trying to load a disc.
But there is no disc inside to cause the drive to think its loaded. It will do this 3 or 4 times before giving up. The noise is annoying especially when at the library studying for finals.

I just bought a MacBook Pro and for some reason there is an update available for angry birds. When i try to update it tells me i have to log on to an account that is not mine. Even crazier, I've never in my life saw that Apple ID before and i only logged on with my own ID on my brand new Mac. I know it's a small thing but it is annoying.

Late Thursday, Apple introduced its Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update (40.3MB).
The fix is advised for all eligible Mac users and improves customization as well as performance for migrating data over Ethernet, FireWire or USB.
The update is applicable to both Mac OS X 10.4.11 as well as all existing releases of 10.5.

I just went on the update system for my MacBook on the UK Apple site, and clicked that I bought it online from Apple (which I did, on my Dad's apple account) and then asked me to login, so I did with my account and it asked me for serial number and purchase date, so I typed my serial number and and chose purchase date 7th Jan, rather than 1st December (when it was actually shipped) and it's just added the iLife '09 upgrade to my cart and said my system qualifies. Am I safe to go ahead and buy it? Could I get into trouble or something for lying about the purchase date?

I have a MacBook Pro, about two years old, with no probs up until last night when I accepted the latest Apple Update ( itunes, security, etc ). That's when all the problems started. Now I can't get into Mail or Safari, & after getting no response from either, I am having to do a "force quit" to get out of either of the applications. I am getting the same error message each time PubSubAction has quit unexpectedly. Does anyone know what this actually means? I asked the guy at the Apple Shop & he had no idea, & the other people working there had never heard of it either. It just seems very sus that as soon as I downloaded the latest updates these two apps begun having problems. Prior to my updating, I had sent off emails, done the banking online, paid bills & checked my items on eBay. Nothing terribly much & definately didn't accept any files- except the apple updates, when I rebooted, etc. Once the computer rebooted, it now takes between 5 to 10 minutes to start up. Anyway, being that I'm pretty much puter illiterate & a helpless female with these matters as well, just wondering if anyone out there ( female and male ) can offer any suggestions or advice on this problem for me please.

I have a macbook 2.4 alu (Late 2008) and Installed linux as soon as I got it.(I just like the cases). Anyway I know that you need to use apple update in osx to update the firmware. I can't dual boot because my HD is MBR. I thought of 2 ways.
A. Install OSX onto a usb device (Cost 30-40 bucks for usb)
B. Take to apple store, Maybe they can do it.
I can't dual boot because my HD is MBR. I heard the new firmware updates stop a lot of issues.

I resently updated my macbook pro to the latest software version of Lion (10.7.4). Ever sence then i have experiened a serious amount of latancy somewhere between my signal and my DAW (Pro Tools 10) that I can't get rid of! I have tried lower buffer size, turning on low latency monitoring and tried different audio interfaces. None of these options seems to make a difference. I also have the latest update of Pro Tools. I have also tried reinstall pro tools. No effect. I estimate the latency to be around 25-30ms.Â
