I was just wondering if the iMac G5's (the late 2005 models, last ones without isight i think) can support using a VGA/DVI monitor as a proper spanned second display with something like screen spanning doctor that works on the old iBooks, rather than just mirroring whatever is on the iMac display.

Our eMac seems to be developing a green tint in the bottom right hand corner of its screen. I've done some quick searching online and it seems that a few people have suggested a cold boot so it runs the degaussing process on a startup.
I left the eMac off for about an hour, unplugged. It did the degauss once it was plugged back in and "seems" to have removed nearly all of the green tint.
There are a few threads on various forums when I search on Google about this issue but they have no conclusive reasons why this is happening.
Could my eMac be developing a fault at all? I'm not too sure if anything magnetic has been placed on our table near the eMac so this may be the reason.

My emac screen was working fine. then suddenly the screen image seemed to wiggle as if there was a power problem. I was able to shut off the emac properly using the shut down drop down menu before things could get worse.
But when I restart, the computer seems to turn on fine but the screen remains dark.

My next computer purchase will probably be a MacBook (or MacBook Pro) but I obviously want to be able to plug it into a better screen when I'm at my desk. I was wondering if anyone knows if it would be possible to use my current eMac as this screen?
I have heard that in the early iMacs the monitor was connected internally with a normal monitor lead - so you could open it up and connect a longer one. Does anyone know if this would be the case with an eMac?
Or any other way I might be able to do this?

I have managed to scrounge a 2nd generation emac from college that has a faulty screen, the screen is totally unusable. i have seen the mod explaining how to remove the crt and put an lcd screen in there but to be honest i cant be botherd. all i want to do is run a standard lcd monitor externally from the mini dvi port (aquired cable from college also ) just wonderd if there was a way of disabling/ switching it off to save on power.
Also what version os would you reccomend running on this emac?

When I press the power button on my eMac, it takes extra long on the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning gif, then takes about two minutes on the blue screen with just the spinning gif, then goes to a solid blue background, with a functional cursor, but no OSX. I've tried trying to eject the CD tray at all points in the startup process to put in the Mac OSX re-install discs, but it doesn't respond. What should I try before sending it in to an Apple store or Cupertino?

I am a high school teacher and in my lab, for the first time, I have an eMac (1 GHz G4), that, when I turn it on, all that shows is a grey screen with an apple in the middle. I tried doing a "mac-boot" to no avail.

I purchased a Mac Pro sometime back to use in my office but the person in the office next to me also frequently has use for a Mac Pro and since we can't purchase two Mac Pro's now we decided to set up a system with multiple monitors/keyboard/mouse. We ran a 2nd DVI Cable and a USB Hub over to the other office and use that for a second monitor hooked onto this Mac Pro plus a 2nd Keyboard and Mouse. Fortunately the distance was not too far and it worked out well.
we're having is trying to figure out how to do the Screen Mirroring/Spanning. The Mac Pro has two video cards. Video card 1 is the Nvidea 8800 GT and the 2nd card is an ATI 2600 XT. I have the main monitor in my office which is a 22" Samsung Widescreen hooked up as video 1 on the Nvidea card. The 2nd monitor which is an Acer 19" Widescreen monitor has been hooked up to both video 2 on the NVidea card and even video 1 on the ATI.

Greetings and saluations everyone. I've recently delved into the OSX world via secondhand eMac. The specs are eMac (2006 - not a typo... this is what it says)/1.42gHz/80GB HDD/1GB ram/etc. It came equipped with 10.4.6, did an update to the software and it brought the machine to 10.4.11.
After a week or so of tinkering, I think I have accidentally deleted some very necessary system files. Given that the computer did not come with any manuals or recovery discs, I've been doing some major digging over the last three days via internet and can not come up with a fix for my new love. I saw this post on MacRumors and it nearly is exactly what I'm experiencing: Mac chimes upon pressing of start button, goes to greyish screen with grey Apple logo and a spinning progress indicator then the computer goes silent (no HDD/CD activity)... yet keeps the active grey screen.
I've tried booting into safe mode but to no avail which leads me to think I've accidentally deleted some extremely necessary boot files. However, I do not remember emptying the trash during the last successful boot... is there a way from a command line prompt to "put the files back" to where they go?
I've downloaded several Mac OSX Leopard torrents but can't get them to boot off of USB drive, DVD RW external drive, external USB hard drive nor via OSX 9 CD ... Indeed, I am trying to burn from windows but have learned of several utilities which create ISOs in Mac Format and will decompress DMG files (ISOBuster & TransMac).
Please... will someone give me some good news? For example, telling me there is a way to boot from USB drive (and in what format the mac needs to boot - ISO? DMG? Expanded file system in appropriate directory folders? I don't care about wiping the hard drive... that's absolutely fine... I just need a working system again.

Reviewed dozens of posts on various forums and found some great advice but still having major problems. Just installed SSD on my 12" 1.33 GHz ibook G4. Super cool at first - saw the unlocked resolutions and changed to 1920x1080. Then decided it would be interesting to see the 90* rotation view. BIG mistake. did not work- screen looked weird then went blank.
had to shut down and restart without external monitor connected in order to see anything but a blank, grey, blue, or weird screen. now I cannot even get the regular mirror setting to work- no external monitor viewing at all. 1) won't recognize external display unless I restart with it already connected. 2) even then, only shows blue screen (color of my desktop) but nothing else anywhere to be found. 3) with Screen Spanning Doctor enabled, still get weird looking screen - external display still appears rotated 90 degrees based on mouse pointer movements, but cannot see anything except gray hash. Tried disabling ScreenSpanningDoctor, deleting it from trash, resetting PRAM and NVRAM (unless they did not reset for some reason though I followed apple's instructions), and repaired disk permissions.
Still same situation. Would be thrilled to get original settings back. Then I would probably try SSD again but avoid the rotation feature which I assume my ibook is not compatible with. Please help. Thank you.

I'm looking to build a kind of video wall. I have 4 LCD monitors which I've hooked up to a Mac pro to get a resolution of 3840x2104 on screen. Then I made an After Effects movie of a white box bouncing around the screen rendered at 3840x2104. What I'd like to be able to do is play the movie full screen and have it actually fill all four screens, but when I do Cmd+F and make it "full-screen", Quicktime is insistent on just filling one of my screens. I can expand the window (in non-full screen mode) to fill all four monitors, but then I have borders everwhere which I don't want (IE, the OS X menu bar and the "play" buttons at the bottom, etc). Quicktime has full screen settings which allow you to choose which monitor you'd like to fill, but (from what I can tell) there's no way to have it use more than one monitor. Does anyone know of a way I can play the movie across all four screens? I thought maybe another media player would offer this functionality, but I tried using VLC and it didn't seem to. Are there any other third party packages supporting H.264 that might offer this? Is there some plugin or method for Quicktime to beat it into submission?

Im purchasing an eMac in a couple days, but am a little confused about performance. Its a 1 GHZ PowerPC G4 with 256MB of Ram but my last pc blew up (literaly) However the 1GB of RAM that was in still works and will fit in it.
Besides that my Questions pertain to Leopard and Time Machine. I Know that Leopard will run on this Mac, But what about performance? and I heard that the eMacs cant experience the i candy Time Machine offers.
How So? is it true? I really want the Ability to use Time Machine. (Right now i'm just using Genie Timeline for my Windows 7 PC)

I just got a USB 2.0 emac for nothing that was going to the recycler. The door specs are: 1.25 ghz/256/40GB/Combo "About this mac" shows that it has 512mb RAM installed in one slot, and it is running 10.4.11 Anyways, it seems to be working great so far. I was able to get one stick of 256mb supported RAM from the only other 1.25 ghz machine in the lot - the rest were 700 - 800mhz emacs. Is it OK to mix the 256 with the 512? I've read many places that it is fine, but will it actually boost the speed of apps and things, or should I just leave it as is? I read somewhere that it might slow down the speed between the two RAM capacities. I don't want to spend any money to buy more RAM.

I have an EMac g4-255mb(just got 2 (256mb chips) never put in yet)-60gig running 10.4 (just got it) and now just got iLife 06) and then I have an 80gig external hard drive. So its like 140gig of room. But I only have a cd burner and dvd drive. Would it be cheaper to install an new internal drive? Or pay more for the external(cause there is no hard installation). What drives would work? And I have a $200 dollar gift card to bestbuy or futureshop.

I have just got an excellent condition eMac 1.42GHz with the Radeon 9600 Card every transition is so smooth! Smoother than my MacBook!
Everything is standard, but it has an Airport Card in it as well which is cool
However, standard also means only 256MB of DDR3200 Memory.
Tiger is installed and everything updated.
Now I am planning to move this thing to Leopard alongside my MacBook. How much RAM shall I get for it? 512MB or 1GB? (bringing it to 768/1.25 respectively) Also what do I need to look out for brand-wise or type wise?

I am wondering because of the click sound if it may actually be the hard-drive causing the pausing issues (as processor/loading noise on macs is generally silent). I have done all of the disk utility fixes etc. with no positive results; disk utility can not find any problems with the HD.

my grandfather's dell laptop is horribly slow. I want to buy him a new computer thats runs faster for his emails/videos. I was looking at the old imacs/emacs on ebay (the 2000-2005) versions.
These comps fit in his budget of approx 100$. I was planning to buy an imac/emac with the following specs
500mhz (or faster) Processor (or 600/700mhz)
256mb (or more) Ram (512mb)
20gb Hard drive (adding external memory)
with the newer os x operating system.
My question will these computers fit his needs? He writes emails, he writes a ton of word documents, and he views videos off youtube and off a media player.
My question is that will these spec'd computers be able to run his needs efficiently?
Are there programs that are similar to the windows (which he is used to)?
Can you run microsoft office on these computers?
If not what would be the recommended specs I should look for?

My 5yo eMac (1GHz G4 with 1GB of RAM) freezes intermittently. Sometimes the mouse & keyboard lock up, sometimes a semi-opaque grey 'curtain' covers the screen with a message window in the middle telling me to restart.
Sometimes it restarts okay, sometimes it freezes on the Apple/cog-wheel screen, sometimes the grey curtain comes down again, sometimes the desktop loads okay but then lines of code scroll down the left side of the screen and it locks up again. The RAM is third-party stuff but it's been working fine for over 12 months. The freezing occurs under 10.4 and 10.3.

Trying to get the ps3 eye to work with my emac. OS X 10.5.6. I have downloaded the latest macam and installed it, dragged the component over to the folder, and copied the component into the library/quicktime folder. When I open macam it recognizes that I have the ps3 eye hooked up, but the screen is black. Skype and yahoo also recognize the camera, but the cam monitor screen is black. I really want this to work, and have seen many posts from people with the emac/eye/macam combo and a lot of people have said it works.
