PowerPC :: Removing Data?

Jun 18, 2007

I am not very techie so please accept apologies for a naive question.

I am getting delivery of my new macbook pro today. I have already received advice on how to transfer all my software and data over (thanks). Once done I will be selling my Powerbook.

Is it ok just to remove my personal data? Or do i need to do a complete reinstall?

If i need to do a complete reinstall i have a question. I cant remember where ive put my original discs but ive bought some which are original panther install to a powerbook. My powerbook runs on Tiger (ibought the upgrade discs last year but have put them with the originals no idea where!!). So do i just put in the powerbook install discs that i have just bought which will be for panther or can i just remove my data?

Applications :: Removing ICal Data?

May 17, 2009

I'm trying to reset iCal by removing all my existing data, but removing my old calendars etc. seems for some reason impossible. No matter what I remove they still reappear!

Having read other posts I've now tried trashing the following folders:

USERNAME/Library/Application Support/iCal/
and
USERNAME/Library/Caches/Metadata/iCal/
and
USERNAME/Library/Caches/Metadata/com.apple.iCal/

I'm using MacOS 10.4.11

After deleting the above folders and reopening iCal I'm presented with just two calendars ("Home" and "Work") but after around 10 seconds all my old calendars pop up again!

Tonight, I might have a chance to get a G5 processor from a friend, who wants to dissassemble his iMac G5 and sell it for parts (he's going to buy a 24" iMac C2D). Should I replace the G4 processor in my iBook G4 with a G5?.

I really want to do this and show off with this (if successful) in the public.

PowerPC :: Completely Removing G3 IMac CRT

Jan 26, 2009

I've been given a half torn apart iMac G3 700mhz (which still runs), and plan on putting it's bare essential parts into a case I'm making. I've taken out the drives and logic board with down converter, but now I'm stuck behind the CRT. I know it's very dangerous, but I need to get around it to get to the board underneath it. Do I have to discharge the CRT or could I just snip the suction cable connected to it without any risk? I plan on recycling the thing, but right now I just need it out of my way.

I'm curious if anyone has a fairly surefire method to remove scuffs and scratches from an iMac G5. I picked one up from a friend for $50 that needed new caps in the power supply (check) and was pretty roughed up cosmetically. Now I've decided to keep it as a kitchen/guest computer but would like to get rid of the scratching as much as possible.

MacBook Pro :: Removing Underside Of MBP 17 - Pop Sound When Removing On Cover Normal?

Jun 30, 2010

as an extension to my question regarding RAM utilization, I've decided to upgrade my RAM. I went through the process of removing the underside of my MBP. After taking the screws out and mentally marking which slot they came out of (some are of different size), I pulled the lid up at the black trim area (the "neck" of the display mount) as this was the easiest way to get a non-damaging grip on the metal underside -- read: I avoided using a screw driver on the lid. As I started to lift, I was surprised at the amount of force I needed to use in order to remove the lid; something near the center of the cover was still holding the lid to the underside of the body. In fact, the amount of force I needed to use made me pause to question if I missed an important step other than simply removing the screws. I decided to "go for it" and applied more pressure while pulling the lid up and away from the body and heard a "pop" noise.

PowerPC :: Transferring Data ?

Aug 10, 2006

I've got a couple questions. My brother is selling his iBook and upgrading to a Macbook.

1) Transferring his stuff. We don't have the Macbook yet, and the person buying needs it today. We do have some pretty beefy external hard drives. What's the best way to transfer all his preferences/files/apps to the external hard drive that'll also make it easy for the Macbook to import? Note that the external can fit the entire iBook hard drive no problem, if that makes a difference.

2) Wiping his info after - I assumed a clean reinstallation of OS X is the way to wipe all his info off and make the iBook ready to change hands. Is that the right way? Is there someone else we should do to make it ready to bid farewell to?

PowerPC :: Recovering Ibook Data?

Oct 2, 2007

My ibook g4 (1.42, 14") died recently - I tried a few fixes, they worked for 30minutes or so, then it died again. Seems to be one of these logic board/graphics cards solder problems. Anyway, while it annoyed me quite a bit, it was a couple of years old and allows me to justify buying a macbook (when apple get around to releasing leopard).

I had been making regular backups of my drive using carbon copy cloner, but the last time I did it was about 2 months ago. Not devastating, but ideally I'd like to get most recent stuff back as well.

Is there an easy way to get data from the ibook g4 or am I resigned to ripping open the case, removing the HD and buying a ATA/USB adaptor?

PowerPC :: Recovering Data Back?

Feb 10, 2010

I have an ibook 10.4. Its my girlfriends she gave it to me to use since my PC broke. She has one of the newer ones. But a lot of her photos were saved in iphoto. So I'm not sure what happened but I restarted the computer and now itunes is reset and iphoto is reset, microsoft word isnt on the computer anymore. Most other files are still there. But I know she is going to kill me for losing all these photos! I bought this digitial picture frame from Brookstones I'm going to put pictures of us on it and send it to her for V-day. It came with a CD to load the software on it. It works with both mac and PC. It was working fine then I went out to the bar for a little bit. I had used the software fine and already uploaded a few photos before the bar. So I come home to reopen the software and its taking forever, the icon is just bouncing up and down. So I restart the computer. When it comes back the dock is larger, itunes and iphoto is reset. WTF happened?! and how can i change it back? I know PC's have that option where you can revert back to an earlier time.

-If i salvage the optical drive, can I buy a case for it and use with with my MacBook?

PowerPC :: Zeroing Data - Powerbook Frozen?

Jan 10, 2009

I'm selling my 17" Powerbook so I decided to zero out the data with the "rewrite random data" option -- I always heard "7 pass" but I'm pretty sure it said "8 pass" when I clicked it. I started this on Tuesday afternoon, and now it's Friday night and it's still not finished! It's a 100g HD, and I clicked the drive at the very top of the list -- the one with numbers, not what I would call the "sub-drive" of that which actually included the letters "HD". Usually when I would wake up in the morning, I could see some progress, but in the last 24 hours there hasn't been any. It says "Creating Partition Map". Is it normal for it to take this long?? Do you think it's frozen? I think my buyer is going to get impatient -- what can I do?

PowerPC :: Finding Best Process To Get Data Transferred From Old HDD To New HDD?

May 15, 2010

I have 2 new HDs (each 1T) uninstalled, and I have my old HD (160 gigs) currently residing in one of the two slots in my G5. Any ideas on the best way/process to get the data transfered from the old HD to the new ones, leaving my two slots filled with the 2 new drives AND my data from the old HD transfered and intact, with a RAID0 setup?

OR, are there any other suggestions on a good setup with the 2 new HDs?

I'm open to suggestions.

I always back-up on external HDs, so, is their a need for me to worry about setting up a RAID0?

I'm doing video processing for DVD release.

Should I just max out the 2x1T gig HDs and not worry about a HD failure?
