I'm looking on cragslist right now for an older powermac to use as a media hub and I think I found one. It appears to be an AGP G4 PowerMac (500Mhz-ish). I have a 256MB graphics card I was using with my PC, I was wondering if I could plop it in and it would work? I know it's probably a pipe dream, but it doesn't hurt to ask
View 7 Repliesa friend recently gave me a g5 power mac that had some issues, and the failure was described as intermittant. The machine supposedly would work properly when booted and start freezing up after time, but if turned on the next day it would work properly for some time. I assumed it was an overheating issue, but apperently there is more to the picture. I have tried booting the machine quite a few times and the display always reads no signal. The machine sounds as if it were booting normally, but there is not output. At first I assumed it was my display cable, which was a DVI-D single link, however the DVI-D dual link cable leads to the same result. Is it nessicary to have a DVI-I cable? None of the error LEDs light up on the motherboard. After doing some hunting I haven't found anyone with the same issue, but I am wondering if I should assume the graphics card is dead. What steps do I need to take to isolate a graphics card failure in a power mac g5?

There's 2 images that are missing so I'm a bit confused. It seems pretty basic but I have to ask just to make sure. The cables that came with my card looks exactly like the image in the post. It has 2 inputs PER cable. With the molex split, I'm guessing I plug only 1 in per cable, so does that mean the other input is left hanging with no connection? Is there a specific input on the cable that I use? I notice there's only 3 colors with yellow and black leading to different holes and the brown one leading to the same hole. It seems so basic, but so confused without the 2 missing pictures.

I'm upgrading to a Nvidia GeForce 8800GT graphics card on my 1st gen Mac Pro. I know how to install the card and that it needs aux power to work. The card has the aux power cable, but I'm not sure where to plug it in. There is a egg crate looking connector near the fan. Is this the aux power connector? There are two little prongs on the cable? Do these prong have to go into a specific side (i.e. positive and negative).

Do not want a nuisance to escalate into a serious problem thru benign neglect. Random black screen -- Turn monitor off then on, and all comes back fine. No loss of power in machine, no fan quirks, no overheating. Is it the Monitor? or the graphics card?

I have a G5 dual 2.0 with 5.5 GB ram and an ATI Radeon 9600 pro graphics card.
I have been running Final Cut Studio with no problems. Once I upgraded to FCS 2, it seems to drag with some of the new fetures. Motion 3 seems really slow! So I added 2 more gigs of ram to bring it up to the 5.5.
I am waiting for the new MP like so many of you, but I will keep this computer for off line editing and compressor and for a part time assistant editor to use.
Would it be worth it for me to upgrade the graphics card?
If so what would be a good choice of card for this type of work.
FYI the last computer game I played was Zork, so I don't care about gaming.
I had recently purchased a 2nd hand G5 PowerMac with dual 1.8GHz processors and PCI-X slots. I think it was released in November 2003. It's a great machine, but suffers from its lacklustre 64MB graphics card. My Mac man told me not to bother, but I would like to investigate the option further. What do you think is available and where would I obtain one of these things? Oh, I should also ask the most important question...is it worth it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAll this talk of 8800GT's on the Mac Pros is putting me in the mood for upgrading the 64mb ATI 9600 in my stock PM g5 dual 2 GHz.I have an old Formac Oxygen ADC monitor (used as one screen of my dual head system) but the ADC connector on the graphics card seems to be dead, and everytime I plug the monitor in to the port, the Mac just keeps 'tripping' out and won't power up - almost like something is shorting out.As a result, I'm stuck to using just the DVI port (1 screen is so limiting after being used to 2!!), connected to an ancient VGA monitor. I really miss having a dual screen set-up, and this is another reason why I would like to upgrade the card. would be good to still be able to use my ADC monitor, but I guess only the older, low spec cards had these, and I'm probably gonna have to ditch the monitor and get a couple of DVI screens.

The card needs to run 2 x 23" Cinema Displays. I'm not sure if it makes any difference but it has 16GB memory (twice as much as our new 2.93 Quad can take - there's something not quite right there...)

Lot's of multi-colored lines show up on the screen at the same time and it never boots into OS X. Ran the CD Apple hardware test and the only error i got back was the video memory. So we're thinking about getting a new video card.
It has the factory card still in it and I can't really decide what kind of card needs to be purchased. I've been hunting around the internet and have found numerous conclusions that all seem to differ.
It's basically an AGP 8x slot. We don't need anything fancy just a replacement. There's an auction on ebay right now for the current card (nVidia GeForce FX 5200) but the auction has two in it and we only need one.
but anyway, if anyone could lead me in the right direction i'd really love to get my mom's mac up and running again.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just picked up my iMac g5 20" (2.0 GHz PPC) from the Apple Store for having the power supply replaced. Now I've lost all traces of the built-in Airport Extreme Card: When I click on the now hollow diamond-shaped Airport icon, I get a grayed-out prompt stating "No Airport card installed". Any record of an Airport Card under System Profile comes up with "No information found". My Airport Express does not show up in Network settings either.
Airport Express works fine in my Macbook Pro, so I know it's not something wrong with my Airport Express. I tried installing the "Login & Keychain Update", but can't: "You cannot install Login & Keychain Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update". Ran Disk Utility and came up with errors and unable to repair disk. The iMac was fine going in - except, of course, for the random shut-downs from a failing power supply.
I have a June 2004 revision Power Mac G5 (DP 1.8Ghz) with an AGP slow that is dying for a more powerful graphics card.
I have had the machine since new and have it paired with a 23" Cinema Display, Magic Mouse, BT Apple keyboard, 4GB of Kingston RAM, a pair of 500gb internal HDs, several TBs of external storage, Logitech Z2300 speakers, etc. We also have a new 15" Mac Book Pro, a 13" Mac Book, an Apple TV, Airport Extreme, etc. The desktop doesn't get a TON of use but it is still snappy enough for a lot of what I use it for.
However, since I installed Leopard on it, the OS is nowhere near as fast as it was before (with respect to UI graphics, etc).... I should have expected the newer OS would take more of a toil on the system (especially the graphics card) then did Tiger.... the system has only the factory-installed 64mb GeForce card.... I'm assuming that Leopard, probably more than Tiger, can draw from the GPU for graphic-needs/UI work and I'm assuming that a new graphics card would make a difference....
I just need help deciphering the cards that are available.... 9800XT?? X800??? Any advice on compatible 8x AGP cards would be AMAZING.
