I recently bought a refurb iMac G5 with Os 10.4.11 - It has worked fine and now all of a sudden it will randomly go black as if hibernating and takes a few moments to come back on. It doesn't do it often, usually when I'm playing a video clip on the web for some reason, but not always.
View 2 RepliesI have an iMac (20" 2.4 g, 3 gig ram, os 10.5.6) that has recently stopped waking up after a long night of sleep. I have also found that the mouse and keyboard become unresponsive if the mac does wake up. The mouse has power, but the keyboard does not show any sign of life. The mouse glows red, but when I hit caps-lock, the little green light doesn't come on. I have tried switching ports, but no dice. As I said, the USB port clearly is sending power to the mouse, but not accepting any input. When I restart, all is well on most occassions, but the problem has persisted, once or twice, after a re-boot.
View 1 Replies View Relatedit took so LONG to sleep my macbook when closing the lid, and I wanted to eliminate security concerns with the sleep image being on the hard drive, so I tried that SmartSleep preferences panel, latest version. It worked for awhile (this is on Snow Leopard. But now it hibernates every time again! I've tried resetting the setting to something different, then back to just "sleep".

On my old Macbook, whenever i let the battery drain completely (After I got the 10 minute warning message), the macbook went into hibernation until I plugged it in. However, on my Macbook pro, whenever I do the same it doesn't go into hibernation. Is there something wrong with my battery or have apple changed how this works?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've searched, but I haven't found any info on a situation like mine. I have a 2.5ghz Quad Core G5, it is outfitted with 4 gigs of ram and 2 500gb HD's. Everything was purchased in December of 2005. Over the last 8 months or I have been getting random Kernal Panics. Sometimes the machine will be sitting unused for hours and then I'll come back to it and it's locked up. Other times do not seem to have any pattern, it can be with multiple programs open, just safari, or FCP. The machine always starts right back up with no problems and typically continues to operate for hours or days before reoccurring.
I did the hardware check, and everything tested good. I switched to blutooth keyboard and mouse, and have disconnected all USB devices.I don't seen any signs of leakage.I am pretty much to the point that I assume the logicboard is bad. But I don't really know how to confirm this.
Being that the machine always starts back up and never has problems consistently I really don't know what to think. I wish it could be solved with replacing the ram and/or hard drives. But I just don't know how to determine the actual problem. All I have read is a lot of speculation.
My girlfriend has a 17" G4 Powerbook - she recently bought it second hand. It's one of the late models, with a 1.67 GHz processor and 2GB of RAM installed. It runs like a dream, except for one thing - it has a propensity to freeze occasionally. They're not kernel panics - they're hard freezes, where everything locks up completely. Can't move the mouse, can't force quit, nothing - the only thing to do is switch off and on again. I've looked through the logs and can't find any crash reports, so I'm at a loss to what's causing this. The only lead I have is that it only seems to happen when the machine's running on battery - it's never frozen when the power cord's plugged in. I thought it might be overheating, but it froze this morning after only 5 mins of use, so now I'm stumped.

It is as if there is a pause button that is getting pushed on the screen and when it locks up if it is playing music it plays about 1 second then repeats.it makes it take longer to lock up but it still locks up. I have tried bigger shims and that does not help. If I try to install Leopard on the iBook it doesn't even make it 25% before locking up.

Just bought off a friend and when I did a fresh erase and install of OS X 10.4, repaired permissions and rebooted I get the kernel error telling me to hold down the power button and restart. So I did this and when it restarts I get the grey apple background with a load of writing all over it. How do I try and figure out what is causing the problem. I also ran tech tool pro from the DVD and that says everything has passed such as processor, memory etc
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a 1.8Ghz dual processor G5, 1GB Ram, 80GB HDD, with OS X 10.4.7 installed and all current updates, and today I was working on it and the fans on it slowly started speeding up, and then everything on the screen disappeared and a mesage appeared stating that a restart was required. After restarting everything seems to be working fine, but I'd like to know if this is a fluke or if I have a serious problem.
View 12 Replies View RelatedRecently my job gave me this laptop that I think from what teh net says is a Titanium model. They told me it was dropped and the screen never worked. The thing is the screen kinda works, well the top 1/3 Horizontally of the screen shows the desktop and what not. The 2/3 of the monitor shoes a vertical pinstripe randome colors. The thing is I dont have the charger and I cant take a photo of it. I am wondering if its worth putting money in this laptop. I did while it worked hooked it up on external monitor, overall it works fine. My brother told me to ebay it and use the money for a Mac book. I just want opinions to what to do. I feel since theres still image showing on the screen may be just a broken cable or loose.
View 1 Replies View RelatedLast month I removed my super drive from my MBP i7 and replaced it with an SSD using the New Modus caddy. This was done so I could place a 1TB Scorpio Blue in the HDD bay. Last night, I left my computer on, and I must have accidentally pulled out the power cord. When I tried to wake it, nothing happened, so I reattached the magsafe and, low and behold, OSX would not load. I restarted with the same result - the grey and black startup wheel spins continuously (not the rainbow beachball) and the OS wont load. In response I attached my external superdrive and ran disk utilities on the SSD drive, which contains the OS. Apparently, the drive is corrupt and cannot be repaired. Disk utilities displays a "B-tree" error and recommends that I reformat the drive after removing any files that I am able to.
is there anyway that I can repair my SSD without reformatting? I thought about swapping my HDD from my old MBP for the Scorpio Blue drive and selecting it as the start up drive so I could try to transfer files, but its not a S-ATA connection. Would Disk Warrior or something similar be more effective at repairing the drive than Apple Disk Utility?
I get a random door bell sound at random times, even if the IMac is off. What do I do?

I have a macbook pro. I was recently overseas when I closed my lid the mac went into hibernation and everything was fine. So I came back home and when I opened my mac my outlook icon on my dock was missing. So was my mails went missing. When I opened the application. It started over again. All my mail has gone. So I used timeline and had backed up every thing. However still don't explain has to why the my outlook had disappeared.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 24" 2007 iMac, the first aluminum ones, 4Gb of Ram and a recently upgraded HD to 1Tb (from a 320Gb failed drive). Recently, I have noticed that under some active usage, such as playing World of Warcraft or Excel, the screen will start to turn completely off for 10 seconds, and then back on for 10 seconds. It will continue to do this for about 3 hours, turning on and off every few seconds or 15 seconds. It will mostly turn completely dark but would also sometimes flicker. The curious thing, is that if I continue to keep playing, the screen would cease doing this after about 3 hours and then be completely normal and fine, but the next night.
The symptoms would repeat itself, and would consistently go away after active usage (3 hours or so). Imagine this, as if the iMac itself needs to be "warmed up" for 3 hours before normal usage. It would also appear that if I hit the machine (or tap it), this may sometimes bring a dark screen back to life for a few seconds. I plan to bring it to support, but I just want to get some ideas from you guys as to what this can possibly be.
Some of my guesses:
1) It cannot be software as physically hitting it or my dog barking would affect the rate and speed of the random turn Ons and Offs.
2) It could be a loose connector from my recent transportation of it while upgrading my HD, but then why would it become normal after 3 hours of usage?
3) Maybe something to do with RAM or video RAM? It is faulty, and thus only prolong heavy usage would "run it in" for the session? After not using it for a while, it goes back to its failed state?
I've had my 27" iMac (3.06GHz) for a few weeks now and yesterday I noticed some weird artifacts appearing on the screen, very randomly.
They will pop up all over the screen but if I "Show desktop", they will go away for a bit but sometimes reappear again in different areas of the screen. I restarted the computer but that only temporarily fixed the problem.
Anyone know what's causing this and how to fix it?
The screen randomly turns black without any major reasons. It doesn't seem to be a sleep mode/screen saver thing as the music continues to play on. I can adjust the volume or pause the music with the keyboard but the screen just won't turn back on. I have to shut it down using the power button and it happened several time the last couple days. Anyone else experience the same thing and got a solution?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've had my i7 iMac for months now, and it's acted perfectly with no hassles or quirks at all-- until the past couple weeks after I installed 4gb of kingston ram.
The problem occurs whenever I enter fullscreen mode with flash programs-- rather it be fullscreening a youtube video or a livestream. It's more of a 2-3 second freeze, rather than a full-scale freeze. After the freeze, the computer acts normal again, but iStat menus shows one of the lynnfield's processing cores to have a sudden spike in usage for that small period of time (a spike that reaches to the top of that specific core's capacity)
It's not an everytime type of deal, and I only get it maybe once every other day, but it seems to be happening after installing the additional ram. System Profiler has the ram as running fine, and repairing disk permissions doesn't do any help either. I highly doubt it has anything to do with the SMC or PRAM either.
I have a G5 iMac, 1G ram, with three external HD, a MIDI keyboard, and an all-in-one Canon print/copy/scan, running Leopard. Lately, my iMac has been turning off seemingly at random, like someone has hit the power strip (although other things plugged into the strip stay on). Sometimes it will reboot when I turn it back on, sometimes not. When it doesn't, it will get partway through startup, then turn off again. There is no apparent pattern to the point during startup where this happens, it's different every time. Sometimes, it barely spins the HD before going dark again.
I took off the back and checked the power supply LED. It says the power supply is OK. I rebooted via the internal power button, and everything was fine for a couple of days. I set the preferences to "reboot after power failure" so it will reboot when I'm at work. I can go through the Time Machine backup list and see how many times it shut down and rebooted during the day (TM backs up once per hour, so when there is a significant length of time between backups, I know it shut down for awhile). The only recent addition is the installation of MoneyWell software, but this app isn't always running when the comp goes black.
I have an iMac late 2012. Since upgrading the OS to Yosemite, I have had random drops in my wifi. I have already tried 'forgetting the network' and Deleting the system config stuff. I still get this random drop. My computer is unreliable. Dropping during an online exam is bs because it screws everything up.
I have never experienced Wifi drops in my life and I am starting to get annoyed with this.
My keyboard and mouse is using bluetooth... Does that have something to do with it? Should I just install and use Windows instead?

The last 2 days my iMac has completely frozen on me at random times. Frozen meaning, no mouse movement, no keyboard activity (caps lock not responding) and no OSX activity whatsoever. Temp at the time 41C, CPU Usage at 21% or smth, Fan speed at around 1200rpm. However, I don't get the infamous kernel panic error. I haven't changed anything hardware wise. I did have a couple of months ago the graphics glitch problem. Last software update was the iWork one. iMac is Aluminum 20' with C2D 2.4 and ATi 2600 Pro.

Before i got my imac i seriously considered a g5 dual 2.0, but the money wasnt there. I see an apple refurb dual 2.0 for 1599, and im sure i cud get one a lot cheaper used here or on another board. How much of a performance increase will i see IN APERTURE going to the PM, if any? i would need a good increase to justify it, and eve then im not sure my parents would be ok with me spending a few hundred bucks to upgrade

The intel iMac was made in late 2006 and the iMac G3 was made in 1999, 1998 or 2000.
i am see if it was a good idea to trade my psp with a bunch of stuff for a g4 imac 700mhz 684 ram (or something close to that). i have a macbook but i want a desktop because i want something to run folding at home on and for a place to dump all my stuff. plus i dont play my psp anymore i did for a little while but now it just sets there. o and i was thinking of letting people use it that like theres computer just died or they want to see what a mac is like. so just wanting to see what people thought.

(and the cost of replacement wouldn't be worth it). She can still use it if it never sleeps, which she will do for a while. Can she buy a mini (or I give her mine) and use the imac monitor? She would rather spend as little as possible.

In fact, I wonder, if it's possible to leave the iMac G4 (800MHZ) without a fan, unless I figuered out my problem with the fan connectors. Ok, I know, the fan inside the iMac is not for nothing. But, is there anyone outside, who uses his iMac without a fan?

Just wondering if i can use my Imac G5 lcd as monitor for a pc? I want to learn 3Dmax and need to buy a pc,if i could utalise my Imac G5's display as display for a pc aswell would be a big help not only is it an excellent Lcd, but i could save $$.
