PowerPC :: Ubuntu G3 IMac Overclock (pencil)

Aug 13, 2010

I scored a G3 400DV from an internet auction site for AU$10. So far I have put 256mb ram, and changed out the HDD (storing the original just in case). I have a fully up-to-date PPC Ubuntu install on it, Firefox 3.6.6 running on an old G3 mac. I want to overclock it as discussed Is it necessary to SOLDER the bridges in, or does graphite pencil do the trick? I'll pick up a B pencil this weekend and when I feel cocky enough I'll de-solder a resistor and test...

PowerPC :: Overclock Digital Audio G4?

Feb 21, 2009

My Digital Audio Power Mac G4 is running at 800 MHz with the 1MB L3 cache but I saw on a website that's it's possible to clock it up more. I have a pretty powerful non-OEM cooling fan on the processor heatsink. I have a resistor in the R5 position so it does run at 800 MHz but I want to get it up to 867 and the site shows that it needs the "jumper set" at R5 and R1 so does that mean I can just leave the existing R5 resistor where it is and just melt a little trace of solder over the R1 to connect the two R1 ends together?

PowerPC :: G4 Sawtooth Overclock Results

May 28, 2009

Well, using some guides (check bottom of post), I did some experimenting with my old G4 Sawtooth to see how fast I could run its lame 400mhz cpu. Ultimately, my goal was to make Quake 3 playable at a resolution other then 800x600. These tests were all done with PC-133 ram (896MB), running 10.4.11.

Starting specs:
400mhz (4x100mhz)
Xbench cpu score: 19.9
1st overclock (with 400mhz cpu):
500mhz (5x100mhz)
Xbench cpu score: 29.3
Note: This was incredibly unstable.

In the process of moving to 450mhz on the 400mhz stock cpu, one of the jumper resistor solder pads came off (lame 10 year old glue). So, I went on ebay and got 5 450mhz G4 cpus for 50$ CDN after shipping. One of them came dead, and one failed after the jumper change.

2nd overclock (with 450mhz cpu):
500mhz (5x100mhz)
Xbench cpu score: 22.3
Note: This sucked. Now really stable, but I didn't get a performance gain like I got with the 400mhz cpu, and Quake 3 still ran like crap.

So here I decided to do the FSB overclock. Knowing I would end up with 4.5 x 133 which would be too fast, i jumpered a cpu to 3.5 multiplier for a 466 clock. This never booted. I put in a 450mhz chip and...

3rd overclock (with 450mhz cpu):
533mhz (4.5x133mhz)
Xbench cpu score: 25.6
Note: That multiply doesn't make sense. It shouldn't be 533. But hey, it worked, stable, and I got a performance gain.

4th overclock (with 450mhz cpu):
533mhz (5x133mhz)
Xbench cpu score: 29.3

Note: Ok, the clock is still not right. This is the same cpu that did the 5x100 so I know the multiplier is set right. But hey, its doing better in the scores!
Conclusion: Success! 533mhz seems to be the top out with the NVRAMRC script in place. But there is a considerable performance gain everywhere (booting, app loading, etc). Most importantly, my Quake 3 now runs very smooth @ 1280x1024 with max graphics settings. I am a very happy camper. I can take pictures of the solder job if anyone requests them. I do recommend this if you have some good technician skills.

IMac :: Possible To Overclock 5670HD - FPS Improvements

Aug 13, 2010

Would it be possible to overclock the 5670HD in the 21.5" iMac? I heard somewhere, judging by the device ID, that it is a 5730M card. I have been watching the thread on clocking the 5850M, and seeing the great FPS improvements, so was wondering if it would be in anyway possible to do it to the 5730M. Heres what it says in System Profiler:

ATI Radeon HD 5670:

Mac Pro :: How To Overclock Or Reclock 8800GTS

May 17, 2008

For those of you who are using 8800 GTS instead of non-apple 8800 GT, you can use NiBiTor to reclock your 8800GTS back to its factory higher clock speed and increase voltage back to factory firmware level without using software/registry overclocking (ie, RivaTuner). This way you dont even have to use RivaTuner (although it is great program if you want to overclock your card beyong factory overclocked speed or reference speed). But most importantly you can change back your card's voltage from 1.1V back to 1.15V.

You need NiBiTor 4.0, 8800GT32.rom (from this forum), and most recent Nvidia beta driver.

1. verify 8800GT32.rom checksum (under Adv. Info tab) before you start. Ignore integrity red warning as that is from different file size due to OSX EFI which you need to boot OSX

2. change Device id from 0602 to Nvidia PCI-E 8800GTS G92 (0600) under main screen

3. under clockrates tab, enable change amount of active performance levels. recycle levels from 0 to 4 to enable "extra" row. Enter your card's true core, shader, and memory speed from factory. Put 0 for all 3D, Thrtl, and 2D. Mine was 678 core, 1728 shader, and 972 memory.

4. Under Tools select voltage table editor, change entry 1 to 1v, entry 2 to 1.05v, entry 3 to 1.1v, and entry 4 to 1.15 v

5. Under Voltage tab, change "extra" under exact mode to 1.15v. VID mode should automatically change

6. Under temperature tab, fanspeed column should now automatically have 100% for extra, 3d, thrtl, and 2D. If not put 100%.

7. open "fanspeedIC" under temperature tab. Fill into match your original 8800GTS firmware setting. Mine was TCirt = 83, min Duty cycle= 37. Rest were same as 8800GT

8. Save. and done. Just dont change Sub Vendor ID, Sub System ID, Board ID. Otherwise your card wont boot under OSX

If you want to overclock higher speed, you should experiment with RivaTuner before overclocking with firmware.

MacBook :: Overclock / Improving Performance Of System

Sep 6, 2010

I've come into possession of a 1.83 Core Duo MacBook and I am curious if you're able to clock the processors on these in anyway? I appreciate the implications of doing this on a laptop / notebook type device, but I want to know in theory if it is possible. I understand the maximum ram on a MA254LL/A is 2GB... is this correct? Will it not ready any more? In terms of the CD drive, is it possible to upgrade it to a superdrive? Is this easy or simply not possible? I've seen a few on ebay, and would be curious to know if they'd work. How far can you get with a MA254LL/A, whats the maximum HDD you could pop in?

MacBook Pro :: 330M Overclock (Without Windows) - Discussion

Jul 2, 2010

I'd like to know how many over clock their 330M and how much. Somebody without Windows, who hardly ever plays any kind of game probably doesn't over clock but there are probably many that do play but still don't over clock. The only game I am playing now is Modern Warfare 2 and over clocked the 256mb 330M offers about 25% more performance. That is the difference between 25 and 30 fps. I found that temps don't really rise. At default the GPU reaches about 70C and the CPU around 50 (idle is 32-40). Over clocked 645/808/1451 it avg 73C and CPU is a little lower on 48-49C because the fans work a little harder while the CPU has the same amount of work. That sounds pretty cool to me and I didn't even test any higher, because usually a notebook GPU is a cool chip that over clocks well as long as it is cool enough, and desktop GPUs on the same silicon sometimes run standard on almost 90C. The max temps are higher with 82C which it reaches after game start for a short period until the cooling really kicks in. There is no fan control prog running. That is a 30% increase in clock speed with almost no increase in temps.

I don't know how to read out fan speeds in windows but I don't notice the fans from in the loud gameplay anyway. What are your clocks?? I don't like benchmark tools as they don't determine what matter really to me. I know with furmark I get higher temps but I am not running furmark for fun ever. I play CoD. I used in the game (Call of Duty MW2) in Act 2 of the campaign the misson "of there own accord" because it is probably one of the hardest with the lowest min framerates. I get stock 24-25 fps running outside and min 22. Inside it is 33-60fps. Over clocked it is 28 min 30-31 outside and 38-120 indoors. I use native res (high res) but no AA and no soften smoke edges because it kills performance in some scenes and I don't see the difference. Everything else is on the maximum I can switch it to and the textures are high. AA is only missing in some levels with high contrast where edges start flickering a lot but in general I prefer the higher res over AA. It is just more detail and easier to see the enemy.

Hardware :: After Ibook G3 500MHZ Overclock It Won't Recognize Hdd

Nov 27, 2004

my home-country local MAC forum cannot resolve. The thing is,that I did a bit of overclocking on my G3 DUAL USB 500MHZ IBOOK.I overclocked FSB bus to 100MHZ and CPU speed to 600MHZ.But after
that,my IBOOK wouldn't recognize internal HDD.Laptop itself works just fine, it boots from OSX Panther CD and so on,but OSX install JUST WON'T SHOW ME ANY HARD DRIVE WHERE TO INSTALL ITSELF ON TO.As you know... CD and HDD are connected via the same cable to the motherboard and CD works fine.I thought that maybe the part of the cable which was connected to the hdd was broken,so I changed the hole cable.Nothing happened, everything was still the same.I have tested HDD in other computer and it works fine. Also I have tried 2 different HDD-s in Ibook- still the same.I have also tried to reset everything I can> power managment reset (through that button) and reset via functsion+option+p+r (on keyboard...or smth. like that) My smartness has run out. What shall I do?

I should mention that if I don't but any OS cd into the CD-DRIVE,then I get flashing folder with question-mark on my screen.

Anyway,I think that the problem might be related to hdd partitions.I deleted my original OSX partition right after I got overclocked laptop back (because OSX install didn't recognized it) and then changed HDD-s partition to FAT32.(I thought that maybe OSX partition had been damaged during the overclocking process) But maybe the problem was still the cable (right in the beginning) and now OSX install wouldn't recognize my hdd, because it's in FAT32 format? Other thing what makes me think about that: as I told,if there is no CD in CD-DRIVE IBook shows blinking question mark with a folder on its screen. But yesterday I managed to delete hdd's FAT32 partition and replace it with HSF+. (in other laptop and in Windows XP) And when I but that hdd with HSF+ back to my IBOOK one change occured. Now, if it is turned on without OSX CD in it's CD-DRIVE, it shows on screen at first big globe and after a while blinking question mark with a folder. Therefore I assume, that the problem cannot be in hardware, because if I changed HDD partion type, then something else also changed?? Anyway OSX install still didn't show any HDD. What I have to do?? Could FSB upgrade be the key to that problem? (I don't want to believe it,because I read, that if overclocked,IBOOK would work fine, or it would crash- nothing related to the hdd.)

OS X :: Cannot Boot Into Ubuntu CD

Feb 13, 2009

I am having trouble booting into an Ubuntu CD. Sorry about posting it here, but I thought that a Mac community would better suit it. When I first got this machine (was second hand) it came preloaded with OS 9. Immediately I wiped the HD and install a copy of Ubuntu 8.04. The CD was put away and not touched since today. Since then I have install OS X (best OS ever!) and recently I got my hands on a new HD, so I decided to install Ubuntu on it. My only problem is that it won't boot up from the CD.

Again, as I said before, this CD has not been touched since I booted up and installed from it, so long ago. The only possible difference in my computer is the new HD. As soon as I hold down 'C', it shows a white screen and that is it. I have also tried holding option and selecting the CD, but as soon as I hit the arrow, it just displays the same screen again. I will also say that I have no trouble in booting from the Mac OS X install DVD. It was the Live CD that I used last time, but I also have both the live and alternate install disks of the same version.
