The USB on our little ibook isn't working. The ports provide power (i.e., light on mouse works) but that's it. O/S is 10.4.10, it's up to date. Reset the p-ram, no change. Is there a way to rebuild the usb drivers w/o an os re-install?
View 1 RepliesI have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.
Recently my friend came into possession of a used iBook G3 (I don't know the specs off hand; but it runs Tiger okay), and ran into a slight problem. It appears as though the battery doesn't fully charge, and loses power 5 minutes after it being unplugged. I've looked at the battery, and it appears okay--although possibly lose. I'm sure that Apple wouldn't do repairs on it anymore, but does anyone know why the battery might not be working? If specs are needed I can provide them. But its an iBook G3 running Tiger.
View 2 Replies View Related I just got an iBook from a friend to use for school. its running Mac OS X Version 10.3.9 - 800 MHz PowerPC G3. It doesnt appear to have the same settings as my iMac. For example when I go into my system settings it shows my start up disks as a file "..TOSHIBA.." I know this computer has been refurbished, but is this something that could cause the CD/DVD drive to not work?
Is there someway I can fix this problem myself? I would really like to get my CD drive to work. On some CD's I can hear it trying to read it but then spits it out shortly after...some it wont do anything. But the eject button works just fine.
I recently got an iBook from a friend. He didn't want it. I took it home and I used the Recovery CD. Everything was going well. I used an audio cd on the iBook, the CD icon appeared on the desktop and it played it. On the other hand, the DVD did not work. I inserted the DVD the icon did not appear on the desktop.

I have read about this issue before, and I know it is a major problem with this model iBook. When I turn on my iBook nothing shows on the display, just sound, and when it does work, there is just a fuzzy picture. Pressing on the area where the video chip is(left armrest) fixes the issue, but only if I hold it.
Someone said to put something in the case to apply pressure to the video chip, and this worked, but only for a little while before the same thing started happening again. What I need is some repair place that will fix this for cheap, also maybe "clean up" my iBook a bit, it's kind of dirty, missing the bottom bumpers, and missing some screws. What do you think it would cost to get this fixed and cleaned up?
My 1.2 GHz G4 iBooks Firewire stopped working recently. Have tried zapping pram, reloading OSX etc but no luck. Fortunately USB is still working fine so I can still use my external 500GB hard drive, but I can't download video from my aging Sony video cam.
Any suggestions, other than chucking it and getting a new Macbook/Pro? (Which I plan to do sometime anyway, but would rather prolong the life of my iBook for the moment if possible)
My iBook charger has stopped working, the iBook is well out of warranty by now, and i cant find any replacement chargers for it. Instead of just buying another one, will apple replace my current one? It was sparking on the cable that plugs into the computer and it looks like its been burnt, which is probobly why it doesn't work anymore, is this a defect with apples chargers and will they replace it even though my iBook is out of warranty?
View 11 Replies View RelatedUp until recently, F1 - F5 have been Brightness and Volume controls, as they have been since I got the thing. I go to use the Volume, and it doesn't work. I then try the Brightness, and it doesn't work. F6 - F12 all work just fine, which leads me to believe that iBook had a brain fart.
My volume balance has always altered itself. Balancing itself out of one speaker left or right as it so chooses. I know it's smart, but now it's just screwing with me. Settings go and change on their own, dock icons have switched, but this one has stumped me. How do I get those hardware function keys back to doing what they're there to do?
Also, I tried it with an App called Rowmote, that lets you control your Mac from your iPhone, with Apple Remote-like control, and the volume won't change using that either. Another symptom is that sometimes it makes clicking sounds, as if it were changing slowly and glitchy (which it did click sometimes anyhow) when using the Volume slider in the menu bar.
No, the options in System Preferences is not checked to use them as FN. Any ideas?
I am here today looking for guidance with my ibook. I recently updated the software from 10.3 to 10.4. The wireless was working fine on 10.3. Then when I upgraded it it just stopped working. Now it says there is no airport card installed. I need to fix it because I need it for school!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just re-installed OSX 10.4 onto my old G4 iBook, and ever since I did the trackpad has stopped responding. When I plug in a USB mouse and check the system preferences under the keyboard/mouse panel I can't even see a trackpad listed, so it isn't being detected at all. I've tried re-installing the OS and it hasn't helped the problem. Ever since this happened The sound also doesn't seem to work anymore. I'm not sure what to do here, but it's pretty important that I get this fixed.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe trackpad on my iBook G4 1.44ghz stopped working this morning! At first it went stuttery. I temporarily solved this by plugging in a mouse- without using the mouse itself, this seemed to make the trackpad responsive again.
After letting the iBook go to sleep, the trackpad doesn't work at all; nothing I do seems to make it respond. I've tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM, but this hasn't done anything.
Is there anything else I can do, short of buying a new trackpad?
I have some MS word documents on my MacBook (intel) that I'd like to transfer to my white iBook. I tried plugging an enternal HD into the iBook (that HD contained the docs) but the iBook said that the HD wasn't compatible with it. So I went back on my MacBook and transfered the files from the HD to a memory stick.
However when I plugged that in and tried to open the files, MS word opened but the file did not. The word files are Word 2007 and on the iBook is an older OS9 version of Word. The iBook has Mac OSX panther on it, but the MS word opens in "classic mode". Any ideas on how I can get the docs to open on the iBook?
Here's what's happening: We can connect the iBook to the MacBook with a FireWire cable and boot the iBook into FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM) successfully. The MacBook recognizes the iBook and mounts it as a drive on the desktop. When we try to launch Migration Assistant, it asks us where the old data is located. Specifying another Mac (which is the logical choice) causes it to beachball for about 10 minutes then tell us to connect the two computers with a FireWire cable and boot the other one into TDM, which we've already done. Choosing from a Time Machine backup or other disk causes it to display a blank window, as if it can't detect any other systems.

Unfortunately, part of the reason I want to get rid of it is because the cd player doesn't work anymore. Therefore, I am unable to 'c' boot from the original OS X disk and erase the hard drive. View 2 Replies View Relatedwell where do i begin ?? basicly i purchased a ibook g4 14" 1.33ghz that had its harddrive upgraded by a apple service provider. About two weeks after this upgrade took place the harddrive started playing up and the machine would not see the boot volume on the drive when restarted or every now and then the machine would freeze after some time of use, a few hours maybe. i ran apple hardware test and it came back clean after zapping the pram and disk warrioring the drive it fixed this for a day then it started again oh well.
so i sent it back to the service provider who said yep its the hadrdrive goody !!! oh NO he calls back the next day and says the new harddrive is not reconized and that they tried a new ribbon cable WTF when i sent it in the machine saw the harddrive via target disk mode all the time it just didnt see the boot volume.
NOW his saying its the logicboard **** sake !!! so my question could this machines logicboard be fried when it was fine before i sent it in , i mean the ide controller was fine i checked it and now im faced with a brick !!!what do i do ????
My iBook will not display anything on its screen. Rather, it just remains black. One time, the screen did come on, but then shortly after booting, it flickered a lot and then went black again. A year ago, something similiar happened and when I took it to be serviced (when I had AppleCare), they had to send it away and have a new logic board installed. Now this machine is out of warrenty and and I am not sure what to do, or even if it is the same problem. Any suggestions?? Thanks!

Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.
My iBook G4 power supply failed and I'm awaiting a replacement. In the mean time, can I use the power supply from my iBook G3 with the iBook G4?

How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?
I just bought a parts ibook from ebay, but I managed to fix it, except there was no hard drive. I currently have a 6 GB HD in it with OS X.3.9 on it, but I want tiger. I have the tiger family pack, so I have a license for it. It only has a CD-ROM drive, so I am wondering if I can buy a 40 GB HD, and clone the one from my G4 onto it.

I just really love the fact that a MacBook Pro would be portable yet powerful. And yes, I have this iBook for portability to school and such, but if I want to do extensive work on the couch, I could bring a MBP vs. an iMac. What do you all think? Are too laptops redundant?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am sitting with a friends recently purchased iBook G4, 1 Ghz, 40 GB, 512 MB RAM. Wanted to update it for him. put an 80 GB HD in it that used to run on a mini G4 ppc chip. Also I transferred a 512 block of RAM from the same machine.
Now the machine doesn't start though. The HD starts the spinning process, but thats it. Also tried to boot from different system cd's/DVD's but to no avail.
I got a 12" 1.2ghz ibook g4, macally charger just went south.I got about 2 hours of charge left before all hope is lost!I am currently on an AF base, I might be leaving on july 21st. I have a PO box(i think that makes a difference) so i need to make a quick decision.
Ibook G4 is aging, needs a ram and HD upgrade and a new DC in board (again) I want to get a macbook pro when 10.6 comes out and give this one to my sister. So now that i have a reason to buy off line, i could knock 2 birds out with 1 stone and buy the upgrades and charger at the same time. However, the cost of buying the upgrades and what not is about the same as buying a new PC netbook. I really only need internet though. Im a little reluctant to dump $200-$250 into this thing though. So i am trying to go cheap but reliable here. I heard the micro accessories one from ifixit it over heats and makes a humming sound.
I just had a macally charger and it just broke. I read on amazon.com that they changed the design so it works with the ibook but it wont last very long, maybe a few months. its also 40 watts.
The OWC one seems like an off brand macally charger.
There are two Newer technologies chargers that look the same but have different part numbers, not sure what that means.
Could one of you mac gurus point me in the right direction, away from the cheap net books? I just want a reliable charger. Ill pay a little more if I have to. I know the 65w chargers handle the load better, but do they hurt the batteries? I know charging some lithium batteries too fast is real bad.
We have a macbook pro but I decided to resurrect my ancient g4 last week so that my kids could play videos and watch youtube. After doing some modifying with flash to get it to play on youtube it worked great. Then I installed 1mb of ram and all **** broke loose. After about 20 minutes everything, and I mean everything went dead. I installed the old 512 chip and reset the cpu and well, it started but things are wonky now. It's running much slower, won't run youtube videos smoothly ( wouldn't really call it playing as much as slideshowing) or play the games the kids had just played last week.

It just came to my mind that at some storage place of mine, I have an old special edition (grey) iBook that i bought in 1999, if I remember correctly. Can't look it up right now, but I think it had one USB port, one ethernet port, a CD-ROM drive, and it was running OS9.
Is anyone of you still using old iBooks, and what for? Would a version (which?) of OS X run, or would you suggest staying with OS9? Kind of sad to have it just laying around - it was amazing, back in the days.
