I am buying a used powerbook g4 1.5ghz with 1.25gb ram. It has 60gb hd and combo drive. How can i find out the speed of the hard drive (4200 vs 5400 rpm)? PowerBook6,8 TOSHIBA MK6026GAX (this is the hd on the powerbook) Is this a good choice for basic stuff ( email,safari,itunes) and some movie stuff (isquint,ffmpegx)

I want 80 gigs, 5400rpm and an 8mb cache, and have basically narrowed it down to either: Western Digital wd800ve or Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST980815A Does anyone here have either of these drives running in their laptops?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a 27" iMac i7 with 8gb of ram. fully loaded and after partitioning my drive started getting pinwheel problems with the default 5400 rpm harddrive. I did a fresh install and didnt have the problems anymore. Again I put bootcamp on and there are still pinwheel issues. I went to apple and they replaced the harddrive a saying that partitions take a pie like slice out of your drive and it shouldnt effect speed. They replaced with with a 7200 rpm harddrive. All was well until I partitioned the drive again. The weirdest part is that windows runs at 10000 mph where 10.6 pinwheels no matter what I do. I am fairly tech savvy and feel like this is maybe a defragmenting issue. I believe osx defragments files under 20mb. could this be it? It is driving me bonkers. I use both windows and osx and need to boot completely into the OSs as I am using primarily post programs like after effects.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy dad really needs a new laptop, and I wanted to get him either an MBP or MBA. I'd like to keep the price beneath $1500, and lower is better. He is by no means a power user, but travels a lot, so weight is a concern. Right now, he literally has a 10 year old, 600 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 4 GB HDD, 2'' thick Dell. Yeah, it's bad.
I think the MBA would be plenty fast for his needs, but my only concern is with the slower, 4200 RPM drive. How slow is it? I have a netbook with a 5400 RPM 160 GB HDD, so it's probably slower than that, right? By a lot?
An SSD would be nice (from Runcore or another 3rd party), but that would add another $300 to the price, and even if I got a refurbished Rev B, the price would probably be more than I'd like to spend.
Just wondering what the speed difference would be if i upgraded from 5400 to 7200 RPM? Is it worth it or perhaps is an external drive the way to go?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been looking at a number of different Firewire 800 enclosures to use with my new Mac Mini and I have seen lots of complaints with almost all the enclosures that I have investigated, including the Newertech MiniStack v3 which I thought should be a good one. A recent enclosure I came across that I haven't seen any bad reviews about is the Icy Dock (MB559UEB-1S). I'd like to know if others are using this and what they think about it. The next question has to do with the type of hard drive to put into the enclosure. Is it worth getting a high performance drive, or will the Firewire 800 interface be the bottleneck even with an average speed drive?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy G5 tower is one of the early models. Today I turned it on. Immediately the drive bay fan was running at maximum speed. The Mac's temperature was cold as it had not been used for 12 hours. So the speeding fan could not have been due to the drive bay being overheated. The fan never slows down. Even after a restart it immediately spins at its maximum. Plus it stays at maximum speed all the time.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?

Last week I shut down my computer to go away for thanksgiving, and when I came back and turned on my 20" white intel imac my hard drive fan sounds like it is going max rpm. I have istat pro installed and the rpm for the HDD fan is showing it's at zero. Does anybody have a clue as to why this is happening? My computer was working fine when I last used it but now my fan is going crazy. It's really loud and i'm concerned my the life of my fan. Any suggestions on what to do would be great. I installed Snow Leopard after the problem occured, but it's still happening.

I'll be using the machine largely for graphic design, but also for various other tasks as my main computer. I've heard the faster drive IS a noticeable difference, but it also drains battery life and runs hot. There doesn't seem to be a consensus on this anywhere. Is the 7200 worth it?

I had a question about hard drive speed. I know that 7200RPM is quite a bit faster than 5400RPM, but what about battery life. I need it to get me through a day of school, 4-8 hours. My question to you is: would it be worth the extra $50 or so to upgrade to a 7200RPM HD, and what would the effects on battery life be? In your own experiences with current MBPs. I've thought about going with a SSD, but that might end up being too much, since I'm already paying quite a bit.

I just switched out my 160GB hard drive on my 13" MBP for a 500GB. I do notice that things are a little slower now as far as opening up apps and such. Would upgrading to the 4GB of RAM instead of the 2 I have make a difference or is that the trade i get for running a 5200 500GB HD.

However, recently I notice my mac become very slow, got rainbow wheel even when i open the safari. then I use the black magic to test the hard disk speed, it appears the read and write speed is only a little over 30mb/s.
i have recently change my keyboard at apple store, I notice my mac slow down after that, do you think it would related?

At times my iMac (27" July 2011) starts making loud fan noise with mouse showing turning rainbow. The only way to stop is forced shutdown by pushing back button for a while. Yesterday I switched to widget screen and saw hard drive fan speed > 4000 rpm without CPU and temps by on the high side.
