PowerPC :: Powerbook G4 1.67ghz Has Poor Video Playback?
Sep 27, 2009
Hello, I have a 17" Powerbook G4 1.67ghz with the ATI 9700 128mb video card and 1600x1050 screen. I am running Leopard 10.5.8. I love the computer but the video playback on it is terrible. Even youtube videos are choppy. I can watch standard definition video files but not 720p. It there anything I can do or it is just a limitation of the G4 chip and time to upgrade to an intel?

I have a 12" Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz with 1.25GB of RAM. I can't seem to figure out how to make my video playback smooth. I have tried so far playing videos from Itunes and also avi files. No matter what i try its still unwatchable.
I'm running Leopard with latest patches. Web browsing and other things are fine, its only video that is giving me problems

My girlfriend has a 17" G4 Powerbook - she recently bought it second hand. It's one of the late models, with a 1.67 GHz processor and 2GB of RAM installed. It runs like a dream, except for one thing - it has a propensity to freeze occasionally. They're not kernel panics - they're hard freezes, where everything locks up completely. Can't move the mouse, can't force quit, nothing - the only thing to do is switch off and on again. I've looked through the logs and can't find any crash reports, so I'm at a loss to what's causing this. The only lead I have is that it only seems to happen when the machine's running on battery - it's never frozen when the power cord's plugged in. I thought it might be overheating, but it froze this morning after only 5 mins of use, so now I'm stumped.

Hoping that some of you here still own or have owned Powerbooks recently... I have a PB G4 1.67ghz that I bought in July 2005. Since then, it's seen the back of the Apple Store several times to replace three logic boards, a screen, and a SuperDrive, with the most recent instance being the third logic board replacement. This has left the future of my laptop in uncertainty, as the warranty expires this July. In the past, I've owned several Macs for 5 years or more, including my beloved G4 Cube, so I'm no stranger to sticking with my Mac until it's absolutely necessary to upgrade... and financially, I was planning for this computer to last me another 2 years before I had to upgrade.

I'm currently running an old powermac G3 that's fine with everything except video playback.
My question, is it the 300mhz processor, the video card (stock ATI rage), or a combination of both?
Before it's said, I would buy a new computer if I could afford it.

I have a powerbook g4 which has a screen resolution of 1280x854. Does that mean I can watch 720p content? Because adobe in terms of coding for mac is a big fail and won't let me watch anything above 480p with a steady frame rate, is this the same for non flash content?

I recently upgraded my 1st Gen MBP 2.14Ghz and my legs no longer get cooked while doing basic task. This is a great improvement. My new laptop is the 2.53Ghz w/ 4GB and 9400M Nvidia GPU w/ 256MB shared memory. upgraded w/ EFI 1.7
Aside from the upcoming Snow Leopard, the main reason I upgraded was because I watch alot of online video. Netflix, Hulu, etc...I have read that the new GPU does alot of the decoding which keeps the CPU in single digits.I noticed something was sluggish the first time I started watching videos. Netflix had a vertical sync issue that I never experienced w/ my old MBP.Then today I was watching Hulu and I saw the processing or CPU jump to 112% and the base of my laptop was very hot.
Like I said I purchased the new MBP hoping to avoid cooking the family jewels. Anyone know what's going on and what I can do to stop this?

I used my 13.3/1.86/4GB MBA to watch football today and was pretty surprised with the poor battery results. Would this seem normal?
Took off charger at 11:45AM CST, battery 100%Apps open - Mail, Chrome, Parallels with Win XP running, no XP apps open11:45-12:00pm - Simple browsing, no flash running (I use FlashBlock)12:00pm - I start up one window for NFL Sunday Ticket Online, Flash fullscreen video and one window for my Yahoo Fantasy Sports which also uses Flash. For the bulk of the time the NFL game is on fullscreen video with my Fantasy app running in the background1:15pm - I notice my battery is down to 48% with approx 1 hr 10 min remaining. I check my screen brightness and it is at 100% (not sure why), I reduce brightness to 50%1:15 - I use the computer same as at 12:00pm but now at 50% brightness
2:20 - My computer goes into hibernation (there was a low battery warning about 5-10 mins earlier.
So I essentially got 2 1/2 hours of usage with the bulk being heavy usage with flash. For the bulk of the time the computer was using 50-60% of the processor and the exhaust was about 3400rpm (the fan was audible but not loud). Does this usage time seem normal for what I did? I would have expected at least to get 4-5 hours with a 13.3 using flash. Also I was surprised that the battery life didn't improve at all after dropping screen brightness from 100% to 50%.

I just tried using iChat for the first time in SL (I usually use Skype) and experienced something *very* odd.
First, the specs:
Late-2007 MBP
2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo
4 GB RAM
GeForce 8600M GT
The problem:
For the first few seconds of a chat, the video quality was gorgeous. But then my hard drive(?) (could've been the fans, I dunno) would start getting really loud (it sounded like a particularly intense Time Machine backup) and the video got extremely "blocky" until it was basically useless; after a few minutes the audio started to go, too.
We tried this a couple times with the same results. I rebooted my computer & AirPort, but no change.
My chat partner experienced no problems with audio or video (he's also on SL).
According to SpeedTest.net, my connection speeds are 12.31 Mb/s down/1.13 Mb/s up.
Skype and Google Talk video continue to work just fine.

I am leaving for a week long trip and many parts of it will not be able to run the computer off of the powercord, which is a problem because I get about 40mins of wordprocessing use out of it when I run the battery alone. Can someone explain what the significance of these levels are for my Powerbook G4 15'' (Alm) 1.25GHz, namely the cycle count and full charge/remaining capacity?

For about a month now I noticed that whenever I'm watching a video on YouTube in HD or when I'm watching a movie trailer on Quicktime at 1080p, the playback lags. Prior to this everything worked well. All the videos I watched played smoothly at any resolution at any quality. I have an iMac with the following specs:
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB of DDR2 SDRRAM
ATI Radeon HD2600 Graphics Card with 256 VRAM
Also, I do not have many windows or applications open when I watch these videos. I have also close to 21GB of hard disk space used up out of about 280.

I purchased it in June and have had this issue from the start. I am getting some artifacting/ghosting effects on the screen at times when watching videos. It happens 3-4 times during an hour or so of playback and resolves itself within a few seconds each time. The effect looks similar to that of poor encoding or something along those lines which is what I thought it was at first, until I tried playing videos that I knew for a fact didn't have this problem. The video pretty much freezes or colors get inverted in some areas, but the audio is not affected. Let me know if you need any additional details.

how well HD video plays back on their system?
I know that I'm not gonna be using it for 1080p content while I'm on the go, but I do have a lot of movies in 720p, as well as TV shows.

My current Mini (1.83 ghz dual) skips frames when playing back 1080P QT MOV files.
I use the Mini as a DVD player / HTPC. Only recently started taking 1080P video and was bummed at skips on big screen playback.
Has anyone tried playing 1080P video on the new 2.26 ghz model?

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 with two displays and an NVIDIA 8800 card. I was booted into Windows 7 using bootcamp, the machine froze during video playback, hard rebooted. Blue Screened in Windows, went to restart into OS 10.5.7 and I get the Apple logo and spinning gear, it then flashes briefly and goes to a grey screen. The second monitor never engages. The machine is fully booted as I can connect to it with my laptop through filesharing. I've tried PRAM/SMC reset, removing all the RAM/all external devices, pretty much everything. I've even tried replacing the video card and switching PCI slots, with the same issue still occurring.

I have had my black macbook for a little over 2 years it is a c2d 2.16. It has ran flawlessly until recently it has been freezing during video playback. Mostly during online streaming like hulu or netflix. The screen usually gets these little red or green dots all over it when it happens. A couple times the the sound continued but usually it stops. What is going on? It has happened almost every day for a couple weeks now. I am running the latest version of OSX

I've recently been having video playback issues, starting within Final Cut Pro. The clip will play fine at first but then stutter and freeze on and off. I have to constantly stop and play to get through it.

This is question is being posted in the Mac OS & System Software because I couldn't find Quicktime under Windows software. Quicktime Player works fine under XP Pro on one PC and my other XP Pro computer has Quicktime Pro. MOV video is washed out running with Quicktime Pro but also Realplayer's playback is washed out. All other image files display fine.

When playing DVDs on the Apple Air USB DVD player, the video can get quite jumpy when the screen image is complex. Pans are especially challenging. This is when the computer is driving a 1920X1200 external monitor.

I recently upgraded to iLife 06. Now if I import a clip into iMovie, then apply, for example "fade in" at the start it results in jerky playback. It renders the whole program useless.

Just noticed that when I'm lying on the bed with my MBA on my legs, watching so [URL]videos....it starts skipping in about 10-15 minutes.
I don't see core shutdowns.....but actually the video/audio is going to desync and starts skipping....is this normal? Do I have to get a MB/MBP just to watch Hulu and flash videos?
I think this may be related to the temperature, but usually it's not that hot.

why are all my iTunes videos so damn choppy?! High Quality Youtube videos are "ok," but HD Youtube videos are just as bad as trying to watch anything on iTunes.
what do i need to upgrade (word choice?) to successfully watch iTunes videos crisply. i'm assuming it's like a graphics card or a processor or something. i could buy a decent computer in the next couple of months but i'm not because my parents are strongly against me upgrading anything because i'm going to college Fall 2010, so they said i'll just get a high-end something or other when the time comes. the point of what i just rambled about was is there something on my current PC that i can upgrade?

My current setup is: 2009 20" nvidia iMac, 4GB RAM/640 GB HDI generally would like to know what my expectations for decent video playback should be - thankful for any help people can offer on this:When using the Apple DVD player on full-screen mode, dvd playback seems quite grainy, with pixel lag on fast video sequences. Specifically, I was watching original DVD music concerts. The concerts were at night, so the picture is darker, but on my TV & stand-alone DVD player, the picture was less grainy and there was no 'pixel lag'. During computer playback no other programs were open, WLAN was off. The HD is empty except for Apple's stock software. So, could one or more of the following be a logical reason for grainy playback?:a) it's a computer, not a stand-alone DVD player hooked up to a TV.
b) screen quality: TN panel compared to CRT TV.
c) integrated graphics, i.e.: the 2008 iMac with dedicated ATI Radeon 2600 Pro card would be smoother.
d) display settings on Apple's DVD player. (using stock settings BTW)
e) full-screen mode performance is generally not perfect on any system.
f) none of these - something else entirely.

I often have 720p MKV video to watch, and I was wondering whether the current generation base model MacBook White is capable of playing them. I know that the MacBook White has the 9400m GPU which should be capable of doing it, but does it work in reality? What software do you need?

I am a new Mac user and so far I love it! My biggest concern is the quality of video playback when I am watching a DVD movie. On my Old HP laptop, the quality was far better. Is there an issue with playing DVD's, or does it have to do with the screen resolution of the MBP (1440x900)? As far as still pictures go, the screen looks great! Its just video that doesn't look the best...
