I have a iMac given to me that had an 80 gb hardrive put in and OSX 10.4 installed on it. As you will probably know it wont run DVD's on its drive, but i was wonderin if it would accept an external DVD drive. Would it be fine with it and run smoothly or would it be a waste of money?

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy old 24" iMac had an ATI radeon 4850 card, and playing some of my favorite game titles (fallout 3, and Dawn of War) worked fine - atleast in comparison to my old White iMac 24".
Now I'm going to purchase a 27" i5 iMac with the Radeon 4850 card. My question is; since it�s the same GPU and playing in native resolution will be a tough job. Will the quality of playing games in 1080p be much lower?
I just want to know if this will be a significante downgrade. Or if playing games in 1920x1080 will be a good quality choice.
I'm going to be djaying some events for my church and want to use my Powerbook to play the music through a sound system. I'll be running it to a mixer first and then to 2 monitors. What will I need to configure on my Powerbook to do this? Or will I be able to just hook up the cables and play music from iTunes? I will be looking at the actual mixer this coming Sunday to see what type of cables I'll need.

View 2 Replies View RelatedPart of my iBook says there is an initialization error when I open up the DVD program, and the other part of it says I have have no drive at all. But I have tried everything that I was told to do. Basically I have a problem with my white iBook Laptop, a G3-4 800 mhz, which runs on OSX-10.14.11, and has 384 sd-ram
It has a DVD application program, but opening it just gives an initialization error. The date on the App is something from earlier this year, so it's not that old. It has the corporate "DVD" player logo. (but it won't open) If I drop down the Apple menu at the top corner, "About this Mac" I see the list, and if I select Burners, it says No Burner Found. If I look for CD or Audio devices, there is nothing like that on the list but i can find the cd drive under ATA drives (it has the HD listed, and then a CD drive). When I open Disk Utility to find out about 'repairing disk permissions' all I see on the left side of the screen are 2 drives: the hard drive and a CD drive (LG Model 8245B), and I cannot select 'repair permissions' or 'verify' because they are in light grey (un-selectable). If I click on 'First Aid" bacically nothing happens. It's sort of like "nothing's broken, nothing to fix."
So I went on to reset the PRAM, as this was the last suggestion
someone gave me.
Some interesting things: The thing plays CD's. It detects a CD drive, like I said. There is no CD/Audio player Application, anywhere (i was looking to see if it was read/write). There is also, buried somewhere, an older Apple DVD application, for an Apple DVD player. It wants to run on OS-9. So I open OS-9, and after OS9 has opened, it tells me that OS-9 doesn't support it.
The DVD application I mentioned earlier (it's about 28 MB) is newer, and runs on OS-X 10.14. (So.. yes, this was an OS-9 computer which got upgraded to OS 10.4.11)
Lastly, it came from a brother in law who is a filmmaker, and I know that he used it for DVD's. I was told i could also burn with it.(it doesn't burn cd's right now) He re-set some names and passwords when he gave it to me; from what I can see, all the 'permissions' are ok, and set to my name. I have his passwords in case I need them.
If the computer has forgotten that it has a DVD drive, then I can't run OS 10 (which is a dvd), if it were to crash. This worries me, since I had to do this with my old Pismo only 2 months after buying it (at least it had a dvd drive!) I lifted the keyboard to see if there was a label on the cd-dvd player.
Nothing. I can't pull it out (like I could in my old Pismo) to examine the underside. How does it come out? (it's a tray-loader)
Before I start trying to remove the drive, just to see what it says...
Is there any program on the iBook which will actually detect, and tell me what hardware I have? I think that the computer still thinks it has the old cd drive in it, even though it was obviously upgraded to a dvd drive. If I could find out the brand I could maybe download some software driver
for it..?
(i am sort of afraid to go poking around the system files if I know that I cannot use the OS- 10 startup disk when it crashes (since it is a dvd)...
So is it beginning to sound like there WAS a dvd drive in there first, which burned out, and was replaced by a cheaper LG (that's Dell) CD-R drive
On Sunday I popped a DVD into my 1.5 12" Powerbook (756 ram, 100gb hd) and then picture got incredibly screwed up. I guess the best way to describe it is there were a mess of colors and lines everywhere. Trying to move windows around left a window trail on the screen.
First thing after this happened was that I got all the data off, then I popped in the original Panther disc and wanted to do a fresh install, it installed alright from the disc (albeit with issues on the screen), but when it started again, there was a blue screen while the music was playing (the music that comes on when you first get your mac).
Anyone have any suggestions on what to do? From some forum searching it seems to be a video card issue. I'm hoping to salvage it some how, but if not, it'll probably sell as parts. It's been so good for four years now, I was surprised it conked out so suddenly.
My sister has provided me with copies of DVD of a family funeral, she's burned to DVD+R. I can play them on a commercial (LG) DVD player but not on my iMac. I've tried ripping (MacTheRipper) and re burning to DVD-R but this has not resolved the problem. I've experienced in the past, burned DVD that will play on the Mac/PC but not on a commercial player, but before this event, not the reverse.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI know there are tons of threads on various ways to get one's iMac playing hi-def movies, but the purpose of this thread is to sort out which way is best. I'm getting an iMac soon and want to be ready. The way I see it, I basically have three options (only two of which I know to work for sure). 1. Get external blu-ray drive, buy a copy of windows, buy the windows BD software (powerdvd or whatever). I think I can get a BD-ROM for like $150 or so, what is the cheapest option for purchasing windows? Powerdvd? Pros- plays right off disk, will have windows and all the extras that it entails (gaming, etc... I would to get down on some half-life again). Cons- buying all the software seems expensive, less than elegant process everytime I watch something 2. Buy an external BD drive, rip the disks to my harddrive, play in plex. Pros- all native, uses plex (which I plan to use anyway), least to buy, no disks to deal with once everything is ripped Cons- ripping and encoding take lots of time, storage becomes an issue 3- (don't know if this works) buy an eyetv and a blu-ray player (not drive) and use my iMac like a tv. Pros- get added benefits of eyetv (I am more of a tv watcher than movies), setup would work if I ever upgrade to an HDTV, as elegant as watching on a tv Cons- might not work? Not integrated with computer, on expensive side. So what do you guys think, keeping in mind that I'm a tv guy, not a movie guy.

I'm trying to figure out how to use my iMac as a monitor to play my 360 on. I think it has to do something with DVI cables, but I don't know how to do it or how it works. To the best of your knowledge, how do I set up an xbox to play on my monitor with DVI cables and whatever else I need?

I play the videos in VLC, and I should be having a lag free smooth video play back right? I think I am still within the 14 day period, should I call apple and request a replacement? Also my HDD is always running at a constant 59 ~ 60 c when just watching videos / movies is this within normal temperatures?

My friend gave me a burned cd which he burned on his iMac. I put it in the drive and it get's all geared up then nothing. I opened the DVD manually and try to play the files but they aren't even able to be selected. They are light grey like this.

I decided to just get 4GB of RAM for now, but im having second thoughts about it. Would having 8GB of RAM make any difference when playing high-end games like Modern Warfare 2 and Starcraft 2 ?

Its ok if I use VLC as I can change the brightness within the program but anything else ie quicktime, youtube or other embeded video always looks way too dark.
Has anyone else encountered this or is there something out there that I can do do brighten the video image?

Reboot and the loading alert plays nice and loud as always but log in and still no sound.
