PowerPC :: Make Best With IBook For Video Editing?
Jun 14, 2008
I have an iBook G4 with 768mb RAM (a 1 GB chip is in the mail ) it's the 12" 1.2ghz model. I've been having great fun with iMovie for years now, but not with this machine because I just got it. Anyways, when trying to make a project of 243 pictures from a vacation, it took about 2 1/2 hours to export directly to iDVD and then took 5+ hours to burn it! Is this normal?
I do realize I'm running low on RAM (especially being I'm running Leopard, which I forgot to mention above). What are the best ways to increase the speed without losing the quality. I don't need a whole lot more speed because I usually just let it run overnight. I am also running these projects from an external FW 120gb HD.

Well I got rid of the quicksilvers since they died. Power supplys gave out and took the motherboards, So I sold what was left on EBAY.
My G4 Ethernet was sold to a co-worked and he is quite happy.
And I got this off ebay today:
Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5Procs
2GB RAM (2 x 1GB PC3200U DDR SDRAM)
Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-117D
Samsung HD160JJ/P 160GB SATA HDD (not apple labeled, not original to this system)
(1) Power Cord
pci106b,9 PCI Ethernet Controller
Well I didnt' read the fine print and BAZINGA! I noticed that it comes without a video card.
So For video editing, watching hulu and youtube and netflix What do you guys recommend.
I do have a PCI GEforce at home with 512 megs for PC and I was wondering if I could flash it and if so, does anyone know of a good walkthrough?

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on moving from an iMac G5 (2GHz) to an Intel Mac Mini (a Duo or Core 2 Duo, not the Solo) for Final Cut Studio editing? I don't do a ton of editing (it's a hobby), but I wouldn't want too much less than what I'm getting from my G5 right now.

I have a 1.2GHz G4 iBook with the stock 256 MB of RAM (which was always too little, I know). What kind of performance boost can I expect if I max out the RAM to 1.5 GB or whatever the maximum is on this model? I'm running Tiger on it and most of my work is simple word processing and web surfing.

I am looking for an iBook G4 and found one that is pretty reasonably priced (14" iBook w/1.42 GHz G4 processor) but there are 2 issues with it.
The first can be worked around - the Airport Extreme card doesn't work and I was told that it can't be replaced so the owner uses a USB card ... is this true?
The second is more difficult to figure out ... when i boots up sometimes the video doesn't come up so the owner does the following: put a small amount of pressure on the laptop right below the left bottom corner of the keyboard. Once it's running, it's good for weeks.

What can I do to stop my mac from lagging with viewing videos from sites such as google and youtube and sometimes music cuts in and out? It seems to be slow and requires time to think especially when more then one window is open or multiple tabs are being used.
Would a simple ram/memory increase solve this problem? Also sometimes a message regarding quicktime pops up and says I need to update even though everything is updated to 10.4.11 max. Also what is being used to download music.

I have a hand-me-down G3 iBook 14" running Tiger. It works pretty well, of course, it's not as nice as the newer stuff.
Anyway, whenever I watch a in-browser video from CNN (since their site was redesigned), it plays very stuttery, even on a LAN connection. I noticed that their videos use Shockwave, which I updated, but it's bad. I don't have any other problems with You Tube or other videos.
I know this thing isn't a powerhouse, but a 800mhz machine with 640meg of RAM should be able to watch a video in a browser, right? It runs DVD's full screen with no issues.

I got this computer off my brother who tried to fix the video problem but was unsuccessful. I would like to set this computer up as a storage/media server.
1. How do I change some the preferences with-out the monitor. (I have ARD and I would like to set it up on this computer.)
I tried to install a ARD client package through TDM but it does not seem to work. ARD does not see the computer on my network so I connected the ibook to my Macbook Pro via ethernet cable and ARD saw it but was unable to connect it.

I had an iBook G4 1Ghz. I rarely had any problems watching internet videos on sites like Hulu or YouTube. I passed the iBook along to a friend when I got a new MacBook, and he has been unable to watch Web videos. They play, but the audio is ahead of the sound. He's tried it on a few different connections, but they all do this in both Safari 4 and Firefox 3. Clearing the browser cache helped a little, but it hasn't gone away.

Is there any way to improve the video performance on my iBook G3 (600mhz, 640MB RAM, 16MB VRAM)? I find that besides not being able to play any of the HD trailers at Apple's website (even 480p), it can't even seem to play a standard trailer without stutterring. Is there anything I can do to improve the video performance?

I seem to have a little problem. I have a 1.2ghz ibook with 768mb of ram running the newest version of panther. It can play .avi, .mpg and .wmv files fine and smooth in quicktime and vlc player. However whenever I go to lets say [URL], [URL] or sites like those to watch tv shows the video stutters.
Its not a buffering issue because I even wait for it to buffer 100% before I press play but the video always stutters(even if its not in full screen). I use bother firefox and ssafari and there is no difference. . . Does anyone know what the problem could be or how I could fix it? I think an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 32MB should be able to play videos using flashplayer jsut fine dont you?

I have read about this issue before, and I know it is a major problem with this model iBook. When I turn on my iBook nothing shows on the display, just sound, and when it does work, there is just a fuzzy picture. Pressing on the area where the video chip is(left armrest) fixes the issue, but only if I hold it.
Someone said to put something in the case to apply pressure to the video chip, and this worked, but only for a little while before the same thing started happening again. What I need is some repair place that will fix this for cheap, also maybe "clean up" my iBook a bit, it's kind of dirty, missing the bottom bumpers, and missing some screws. What do you think it would cost to get this fixed and cleaned up?

I was at the Apple store this weekend and stumbled onto their mini VGA to S-Video/Composite video adapter. It was cheap so I picked it up and took it home to my G3 ibook (white 12", not the colorful ones). I hooked it up the ibook, then the TV (Aquos 32" HD) via a composite video cord and started the ibook. No picture. I restarted the ibook a few times, adjusted the screen resolution and still no picture.
I then started the ibook without the adapter and hooked the adapter up once the ibook was running. The screen on the ibook dimmed and came back quickly, but no video on the TV. Anyone have any ideas? I'm not sure where to start.

If anyone out there has ever seen "Tailspin" you know what i am talking about when i call my ibook, The Seaduck. it is already as souped up as I can afford to with 1.2gb of ram.in my system requirements I see it says Displays:Color LCDepth: 32-bit Color Is this the same thing as a video card?
I am trying to run CS3, and some things are extreemely jumpy. i am wondering if this is because of resolution or if I need a video card(CS3 requires a 16 bit video card), or maybe hard drive? (i have 30gb-9gb free).
i know the Seaduck can take a bigger hard drive, but i am not sure about video card. Also, i have the 12" model ibook, and htis makes me feel like I am trying to write my nome on a grain of rice when I work in flash so i am wondering if I can hook my computer up to a better monitor, if you have any recomendations, and what the implications of that would be.

I'm new here and I've done a little searching and can't find an exact answer to my situation:I want to convert my video from my iMac and my iBook to my 37" LCD HDTV (Vizio) which has a VGA input already on it.Now, I have a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter already for my iBook, however, the adapter will not work on the Mini-DVI port on my iMac.
My question is: Does anyone know where I can get a cheap alternative to convert Mini-DVI (for my Intel iMac) to VGA with at least 50-75 feet of cable?

Ive got a friend that has a mac pro 2.66 quad core and it came stock with only 2gb of ram. He wants to order some today but is not sure how much to get. If getting it from OWC what would be the best bang for the buck? is there a point where more ram wont make that much difference?
oh and his has 4x512mb sticks, what are your opinions on not matching the sticks? (such as 1gb with 512mb)

I would love some suggestions for some video editing programs that might work on my G3 imac. 500Mhz, 640MB ram, 16MB graphics. I would prefer freeware, and no imovie. Im not looking for anything too extreme, just some basic or above average editing.

I just installed CS5 and was able to play with Premiere Pro and After Effects. Before I was debating on getting an iMac 27 i7 or a Mac Pro. Well for the money, the iMac i7 does everything I ask it to. Computers can still get faster as this thing is fast, but it's not instant meaning, it still takes time to render. But to give you an idea...on my 13.3 Macbook, a 1 hour render takes about 10 minutes on the i7. The interesting thing is playing Starcraft 2...I don't hear the iMac fans at all...however, rendering HD video puts the CPU to work. I only have 8GB of RAM now and it seems responsive, but I can guarantee for these kinds of video editing programs, the more RAM the merrier. I order 8GB more RAM today and I will have a total of 12GB (I stole 4GB out of my Macbook temporarily). I can certainly say for anyone thinking about iMac for video editing it definitely can get the job done. If money however is not an issue go with the Mac Pro...the extra hard drives make a difference. For those on a budget. like me. this is the top of the line product for a prosumer. It's hard to beat the price for the big monitor and i7 chip. BTW...even 27 isn't enough. I got an external 24 next to it and in fact... running both After Effects and Premiere Pro it would not be out of the question to have a 3rd monitor for web browsing or have a document to look at or something. Let's all hope Adobe supports our video cards in the future.

I have a VHS tape of an educational program that I did and plan to transfer it to a DVD and then do some editing on it with a video editing app... Like breaking it up into shorter clips and adding some text to it, etc) I'm looking for a video editing program that I can do this with. Can I use Motion 5 to accomplish this or is there another app in the App Store that would be better... and not cost a fortune

I currently have a Mac Mini, ssd drive, 2.6ghz quad core i7 with 16gb of ram. Graphics is intel hd4000. Despite it's not having dedicated graphics, would I be able to do some fairly heavy video editing, in Final Cut Pro, with it? I'm still learning, but the computer was an investment and I hope it grows with me. Right now I'm learning with iMovie, but I plan on purchasing FcP in the near future. I am hoping I don't have to worry about purchasing another Mac for at least a couple of years, just because I don't have discrete graphics or iris in this one.
Basically I'm not looking to edit a feature-length presentation, but I'd like to do some music videos, with some cool effects, maybe get into short films or documentaries of 10 to 15 min in length. Nothing too intense, but I'd like to play around with some effects.
