PowerPC :: External USB2.0 Drive Won't Eject From G5?
Aug 12, 2007
Anyone have suggestions? I have a single 1.8ghz g5, 1gb ram, 10.4.10. I have a maxtor OneTouch III USB 2.0 200gb drive attached to it.
I can not seem to eject/unmount this drive. Every time i hook it up I just have to end up pulling the USB plug or turning the drive off suddenly to get it to "eject" but then i get the improper device removal error/warning message.
I have tried dragging to trash, I have tried apple E (which is what I usually do to any device) and I have tried going into disk utility and ejecting/unmounting from there as well. no dice.

I recently bought a VANTEC NexStar 3 NST-360FBSU-BK. In the exclosure, I have a SATA drive capable of 3.0Gb/second. It's attached to my Late 2009 Mac Mini via FireWire 800. Based upon my understanding and in this situation, the FireWire should be the bottleneck. Therefore, I should be enjoying bandwidth somewhere shy of 800Mb/second. nfortunately, I'm not getting any where near that speed. I can transfer a 726MB file in 18.6 seconds. According to my math, that's ~5808Mb/18.6 seconds = ~312 Mb/second. This is not even FireWire 400 or USB 2.0 speed. For completeness sake, I also just upgraded from 2GB of ram to 4GB (both PC8500) but nothing seems negatively affected (in fact the computer is much, much more snappy!).

I have the 2007 intel mini and I am looking for hard drive options. Was thinking of installing a 320 gig 7200 drive in it but they are about the same price point as an external 1 TB 7200 3.5 drive. Is it possible to just run the mini off the external drive via firewire or USB2? Would that be slower than using the internal drive?

Supposedly, the external is in use and cannot be ejected, but i don't think it's in use. I've only recently been encountering this problem, and i have no idea why. I've tried quitting every application, but it still claims to be in use.

I just got an external LaCie DVD burner (long story). It works great, but as of right now I can apparently only eject it by right-click > eject or drag it to the "trash." Is there any way to allow me to just use the button on the drive or tie it to the eject button on the keyboard when it's connected, or even another key command like Opt-Eject?

I have a MacBook Pro that I use sometime on Apple Cinema Display. On the USB ports of the display I attached an Western Digital external hard drive. Now, when I want to unplug my laptop from the display, should I eject the external hard drive first?

I recently bought a new 1TB external seagate hard drive to use as media storage for FCP on my G5 quad.
I brought it home and started it up, partitioned into 3 pieces and then I ejected it.
Now it won't be recognized by my Mac. I feel like I've tried everything. Last night I unplugged the firewire and power cable, then this morning I flicked it on just to see what happened. It worked! I added some files to the drive and ejected it again to see if it would restart. Nothing...
So I waited another 15 minutes and tried again, nothing.
Any idea why the drive seems to turn into a brick after I eject it?
Hopefully it'll work after I wait another few hours again, but that doesn't seem like a working hard drive to me.

I found this iBook in my dad's attic at his business. He said he had bought when they released and planned on using it for financial stuff, but figured his Windows laptop would do better. It was in its box BTW, not collecting dust.
Anyways, it's out of warranty and it's specs are:
1.07 GHz PowerPC G4
768 MB DDR SDRAM
Combo drive
12" screen
30GB HD
The combo drive is not fun. It takes a good push, no shove, into the slot for it to go in. It reads it fine and all, and can burn CD's, but pulling it out is plain horrible. I can't just take it and pull it out, I have to have my dad hold the iBook, and I grab the CD and pull it out. The CD ends up having deep scratches and is unreadable from then on. What do I do? Replace it? Or is it repairable?

I have an external Lacie 1 TB hard disk which used to operate at USB2 speeds, but ever since I upgraded to my my Intel Mac Pro (from a G5) it only operates at USB1 speeds regardless of which USB port I plug it into. When I open up System Profiler, it reports "speed up to 12 Mb/sec" which of course is only USB1.1. It used to show "speed up to 480 Mb/sec". Do I need to reformat it something? Can I force it to connect at USB2 speeds?Â

This is a major issue for me, as I feel like I'm going to end up damaging my hard drive.
I am downloading a legal torrent to my external hard drive, however when I quit Transmission and try to eject my external drive, nothing happens. Snow Leopard doesn't even say it is in use like it is meant to. It just does nothing to eject the drive.
So I end up having to yank the USB plug out.
What gives? It ejects normally as long as I don't download to it.

How do I safely "eject" my 2 TB Seagate external hard drive after backing my Mac Air onto it? I need to update my operating software, never had since I first got it. So I bought the Seagate HD, plugged it in and Time Machine just started running. Now I'd really like to be able to confirm that my entire machine backed up completely, and I think it is best to unplug the hard drive before upgrading the OS...is that right?

I am having problems ejecting the external hard drive that I use to back up my laptop. It is a 2012 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.5. My external hard drive is a WD 2 TB My Book Studio. I use it to back up my laptop with Time Machine. Every time I try to eject my disk now I am told that "The disk (Diskname) wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it." I have tried some solutions like to stop Spotlight from indexing the disk and to try and turn off TimeMachine, but neither of these worked. The only thing that has worked so far is to log out of my user name and log back in with a guest user and eject it from there. This takes up a lot of time and is ultimately not really a sustainable way of working on my computer.Â

I was using an external drive for Time Machine for the past year and a few months On Saturday a message came up that it failed. I tried initiating the Time Machine again but failed. I decided to get a new bigger external drive to use for Time Machine. When trying to eject the external drive I was using it gives me this message:
Would it be safe just to force eject or log out and then log back in again to eject it so I can use my new external drive?

I am having difficulties burning 88.x MB DMG files to CDs (new CD-Rs and an old CD-RW) onto two different external USB2 disc burner drives (both have power AC connected: HP and LG Super brands). The new Mac Mini (no disc slot drive)'s updated 64-bit Mac OS X 10.7.4's Disk Utilities tries to burn and then fail right away or after a few seconds. The error says "Unable to burn 'whatever.dmg' (The disc drive did not respond properly and can't recover or retry." Nothing interesting in dmesg, but Disk Utility's logs had details:[URL].Â
I do see my drives' lights on during the burn. I can quick erase the old CD-RW fine. I can burn 538 MB from an 64-bit Windows 8 on my Acer AM3800 PC with the same discs and external burner drives without any problems. Also, I thought it was my USB cable extension, but it wasn't it. I don't use any USB hubs either. DMG files are fine too. I did notice copying from a CD to Mac Mini's local HDD was slow, but no failures.Â

Rather than empty the trash which now contains all the data on my external drive I ejected the external drive immediately. When I ejected the WD external hard drive the trash bin no longer displayed any trash inside of it, and when I re-connected the external drive the "trash" (contents of my external drive) appears again in the trash. Is there a way to break the connection which has formed between my data on the external drive, and my trash bin? I was simply trying to eject my external drive as I've done hundreds of times by dragging the icon to the trash/eject area. I don't want to risk losing the data. I restored my computer, and upgraded to Mavericks.

I've searched the threads but can't find an answer to my problem. I have two problems really but am hoping if I can fix the first, I can work out the second with existing information on the forum. I have a WD 500gb external drive which I use with my Powerbook G4 through firewire. It works fine but now I can't seem to use any other external drive. I tried connecting another WD 320 gb external drive which I am plugging in through USB, but get nothing. I also tried running my other mac (Ibook G4) in target mode to access information on its hard drive but have the same issue - the Powerbook just won't recognize/mount (i.e. I can't see it in finder or desktop or disk utilities).

I have a powerbook 12' 867 mghz, I know I would rather have a new one, but not ready to give up on this old gal yet! Anywhoo I thought the logic board was fried but after letting the powerbook "rest" I came back months later and sometimes it will boot but as soon as I try to do anything it freezes, so maybe the harddrive is fried? How do you get it to ignore the internal drive so it will boot from an external?
