PowerPC :: "DVD Player Not Found" / But Will Play Cd's (iBook)
May 27, 2008
my white iBook says I don't have a DVD player. I am sure that I do, I just looked. There it is again, it's the tray-load version. It plays burned cd's. Basically what I have is a white iBook, 800 processor, 384 sd-ram, OSX 10.4.11, and it was a gift from my brother in law, a film editor. So it has iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and other film/graphics programs on it. I was told it would burn cd's and dvd's, but the iBook tells me that it will not. I think it used to, because he needed this feature for his work, and he would have gone to any expense to have it. (If not burn dvd's, at least to play them back.)
Basically, I can play any burned audio cd, or factory cd, but any Burn program I download says "no suitable burner found".. fine enough, but when I look in Applications I see a DVD file, I open it, and there is the DVD corporate logo, with details about a 26-something megabyte file; but then, a warning/error box pops up with of initialization error ( #70012- A Valid Drive could not be found"). If I open Disk Utility, and then Disk Permissions, I see that the only hardware listed is the hard drive (30 gig), and a CD-rom player (made by LG); also, the fields opposite that are blank, and the options for 'repairing permissions" or verifying permissions, or "repairing disk" are in light grey, that is, Un-select-able. So, it appears that all is fine, so far as the laptop is concerned. (the First Aid tab is selected) I have got a lot of music dvd's, and movie dvd's (all burned-- this is mexico, remember!) and so far it only will play a CD-rom. I have put a factory movie DVD in; but with no luck.
(no disc icon pops up on the screen, and there is no function). So, to review, the machine tells me that I have NO CD burner, though the former owner burned cd's. The machine has a DVD program in Utilities,
though it gives me an initialization error. But in Disk Utilities, there is only listed a CD-rom player (no CD-DVD) as hardware. It will play a cd-rom.
The name on the computer was changed from his name to mine, when he gave it to me; is it possible that some hardware or software still has his name on it? So far as I can tell, it's all in my name, or Admin. The DVD program in Utilities used the name 'System" as the owner. I unlocked all the other stuff. It's all read/write, according to the program.

For years now my G4 iBook has been locked to my local Region as far as DVDs are concerned. Up until yesterday I was able to play local and R0 DVDs. Have just tried playing the same and for some reason it won't play anything. DVDs either get auto ejected or I have to restart and keep hitting F12 to get the DVD out.

Going on a trip, and looking into a car adapter for my iBook (other thread). I'm thinking of using my iBook to play DVD's for the kids in the back. I have bucket seats in front, and a center console, so was thinking of strapping it down between the 2 front seets so the kids in the back could watch movies.
How was the skipping from bumps? I'm thinking volume might be limiting, but not sure. I'm just trying to avoid buying a seperate portable dvd player.

Part of my iBook says there is an initialization error when I open up the DVD program, and the other part of it says I have have no drive at all. But I have tried everything that I was told to do. Basically I have a problem with my white iBook Laptop, a G3-4 800 mhz, which runs on OSX-10.14.11, and has 384 sd-ram
It has a DVD application program, but opening it just gives an initialization error. The date on the App is something from earlier this year, so it's not that old. It has the corporate "DVD" player logo. (but it won't open) If I drop down the Apple menu at the top corner, "About this Mac" I see the list, and if I select Burners, it says No Burner Found. If I look for CD or Audio devices, there is nothing like that on the list but i can find the cd drive under ATA drives (it has the HD listed, and then a CD drive). When I open Disk Utility to find out about 'repairing disk permissions' all I see on the left side of the screen are 2 drives: the hard drive and a CD drive (LG Model 8245B), and I cannot select 'repair permissions' or 'verify' because they are in light grey (un-selectable). If I click on 'First Aid" bacically nothing happens. It's sort of like "nothing's broken, nothing to fix."
So I went on to reset the PRAM, as this was the last suggestion
someone gave me.
Some interesting things: The thing plays CD's. It detects a CD drive, like I said. There is no CD/Audio player Application, anywhere (i was looking to see if it was read/write). There is also, buried somewhere, an older Apple DVD application, for an Apple DVD player. It wants to run on OS-9. So I open OS-9, and after OS9 has opened, it tells me that OS-9 doesn't support it.
The DVD application I mentioned earlier (it's about 28 MB) is newer, and runs on OS-X 10.14. (So.. yes, this was an OS-9 computer which got upgraded to OS 10.4.11)
Lastly, it came from a brother in law who is a filmmaker, and I know that he used it for DVD's. I was told i could also burn with it.(it doesn't burn cd's right now) He re-set some names and passwords when he gave it to me; from what I can see, all the 'permissions' are ok, and set to my name. I have his passwords in case I need them.
If the computer has forgotten that it has a DVD drive, then I can't run OS 10 (which is a dvd), if it were to crash. This worries me, since I had to do this with my old Pismo only 2 months after buying it (at least it had a dvd drive!) I lifted the keyboard to see if there was a label on the cd-dvd player.
Nothing. I can't pull it out (like I could in my old Pismo) to examine the underside. How does it come out? (it's a tray-loader)
Before I start trying to remove the drive, just to see what it says...
Is there any program on the iBook which will actually detect, and tell me what hardware I have? I think that the computer still thinks it has the old cd drive in it, even though it was obviously upgraded to a dvd drive. If I could find out the brand I could maybe download some software driver
for it..?
(i am sort of afraid to go poking around the system files if I know that I cannot use the OS- 10 startup disk when it crashes (since it is a dvd)...
So is it beginning to sound like there WAS a dvd drive in there first, which burned out, and was replaced by a cheaper LG (that's Dell) CD-R drive

I have an iBook G4 and an iAudio F1 mp3 player. The mp3 player is charged by hooking it up to the computer's usb port. Then the mp3 player charges from the computer. Before I had my iBook, i charged it using the desktop. Now I charge it with my iBook. I was just wondering if this was bad for the iBook's battery? I usually have the power cord plugged into the iBook and wall when I'm charging my mp3 player.

Hello. I am looking to sell my old iBook (for parts) but first want to wipe it clean. Unfortunately, part of the reason I want to get rid of it is because the cd player doesn't work anymore. Therefore, I am unable to 'c' boot from the original OS X disk and erase the hard drive. Is there another way to wipe all personal info from my computer, leaving only the operating system?

I have a Logitech Mediaplay Mouse that will not work on my iBook: it reads the receiver, but nothing about the mouse works. At first I thought it was because it must use a non-standard driver (and OS X isn't officially supported in the documentation), but after a little experimentation I've found that it works perfectly on my Cube (running Panther), my dad's Powerbook G4 (Tiger), my brother's Sawtooth G4 (Tiger), and every PC I have. My dad and brother don't use USB Overdrive, but the mouse worked perfectly with USB Overdrive on my Cube and it doesn't work on my iBook whether USB Overdrive is installed or not. I have never had any problems with peripherals and my iBook before. I love this mouse, so someone please help me figure how to make it work!

I have found a ibook g4 I am considering buying. It is a 1.07 mhz 768mb 80gb superdrive. I am getting it for a good deal and it has all the software I will need for school Microsoft office photoshop. I was just wondering what are the capabilities of this machine. Could I play warcraft 3 and starcraft on this and do normal everyday tasks with ease. Or are the stats not good enough to do much of anything

I'm new with this, My ibook plays the little loading tone when I turn it on but nothing else seems to happen. No more lights on the board no nothing the only thing that does s that it change the color of the charger plug, play the song and on the bottom where it goes the battery turn 3 lights like if it where loading something, I guess it means there is power in it. Also if n that moment I click on the mouse does like if it were doing something.

My MacBook was working OK until I was asked to update the Superdrive Firmware Update 3.0 which I did. But after that the drive does not work - cannot play DVD and cannot eject. When I go into Applications and chose DVD Player, I got this error message "There was an intialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found. -70012" What does this mean?
I tried these:
(1) Press the eject button (at top right hand corner of keyboard)
(2) Rebooted and pressed eject button
(3) Rebooted and pressed TrackPad
(4) Connect a mouse and rebooted and pressed the left mouse key.
Information:

Mac OS X (10.5.8)

I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.

My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.

This has only started happening today, I want to watch a DVD on my iMac, and DVD Player wont play it. I've tried different DVDs and I've also tried playing the movies from Video_TS folders on my HDD, still, it wont play. DVD Player will play a few seconds, then the video and audio will stop and freeze. If I try to click stop, or anything else i get a "Not Permitted" bubble appear, and if I click Pause I get a message "DVD Player has encountered a system error. Error -69889"I've tried totally removing DVD Player, its plist's, and folders and restoring a old versions from Time Machine. Still, nothing works. This also happens in Front Row.UPADTE: I fixed VLC by reinstalling it. But DVD Player and Front Row still dont function.

My DVD player software no longer functions on my Powerbook G3 Lombard (Bronze). I had a boot sector problem on my Powerbook and needed to do a wipe and reinstall. I have MacOS X 10.3 and MacOS 9.2.2 on my machine. I am aware that you can't use the 10.3 DVD player and so reinstalled 9.2.2 first. Unfortunately, I cannot find my original Powerbook system disc, so installed 9.2.2 from a G4 system disc I have. Now, the DVD player will not play DVD-Video discs in OS9.
This is a crucial function for me, as I like to watch films on it when I travel on the train. I need to find some software to reinstall from, or fix the hardware incompatibility in some other way (a patch or something). My hardware is: Macintosh Powerbook G3 "Lombard" (Bronze) 400MHz, 256MB RAM, 6GB HD, DVD-ROM. Nobody seems to have the DVD player program (1.3). They say you need 9.1 discs etcetera. I even tried one link that said download DVD player version 1.2 and a tome reader, but the tome reader download site wasn't functioning.

I have tried burning my iTunes purchases onto a CD, and when I try to play them back on my CD player, nothing happens. It will play back in iTunes on the Mac, but not on my CD player or in my car.
I suspect it has to do with the speed at which they burn, but I have no idea how to change that?
