Jul 31, 2006I am kind of new to the MAC world... I once had the really old ibook with the handle a long time ago..and I never got a new Mac due to some problems I faced!
But now, I want to go back to MAC because many things were developed and I missed using a Mac! So, now I am confused between the Powerbook12 inch or the White Macbook 2Ghz ? I really love the size of the Macbook but I am worried about the intel processor...?

Sep 27, 2007currently i'm running a powerbook g4 1.67, and its starting to slow down on me. I have tons of pics and music and i have been faced with the predicament of either upgrading the RAM or just shelling out the extra money for a new computer. I run a lot of of my music programs on there as well (ie. Reason, ProTools) So what would you do? A few Mac people have told me to just upgrade the the ram and you'll see a huge difference and i'd be happy.

Oct 26, 2007Quick question guys, I currently have a Powerbook G4 17 inch with 1.5 Ghz, 2GB of RAM and 80HD. I love it, with the full powered RAM it flies, but, I HATE ITS SIZE, i mean its not that portable. I have at home a Mac Pro so the power im looking for i have it on that machine. I wanna try and change my Powerbook before the new ones arrive because i need PORTABILITY. Is it really a big of a difference? I mean i dont need the "power" of the powerbook because i have the macpro at home. With 2 GB of RAM, will a macbook (lets say the current ones) be really faster and more efficient than my old PB G4? I like the 17 screen but i need portability so bad! what do you guys recommend?

One is a one year old MacBook Pro (2.66 intel duo) with 200GB HD, OSX Leopard and lots of data I need to transfer to my second laptop (a Powerbook G4 PowerPC 1.67 with OSX Tiger and a 100GB) I am planning on upgrading my MacBook Pro with a 500GB and moving the 200GB to my Powerbook so my question is: If I remove the 200GB from the MacBook and install it in the Powerbook, when I turn the Powerbook on, will Leopard boot up normally with all my data available? Or will the computer ask for the HD to be formatted and will I lose all my data?

Ordered by MBP 17" 2.8GHz over the weekend, should be here on Tuesday..
A couple of concerns:
1. Keeping in view its a transition from PPC to Intel, what would you guys advise as "the best way for transferring stuff from my PB to the new MBP"?
Time Machine Backup / Drag n Drop / ???
2. Over 90% of my applications are Universal Binaries meaning the installation should work fine on the MBP.. ?? Any case studies.. I am more worried about my CS4 Apps, installed brushes, filters, preferences etc.
3. Any other tips/best practices to help in this transition will be much appreciated..

Feb 28, 2008I currently have a PowerBook G4 1.67GHz, 90GB HD, 1GB DDr SDRAM... it's ok, but is now getting slightly outdated. Converting takes FOREVER, programs are slow and often crash, I'm nearly out of hdd space and I can't use new application as some require Intel.
So with Apples announcement of the new 'updates' to the MacBooks and the MacBook Pros, I am really torn on which one to get. My initial thought was MBP but then MacRumors posted information about the Montevina Centrino 2 due in June, and then all the speculation started about the next MacBook and Pros Revisions.
It must have been this time a couple of years ago, and I bought my PowerBook, and then a few months down the line the transition to Intel began...
What do I go for? A MacBook (2.4GH White) or do I just go ahead and get a MacBook Pro (2.5GH 15")?
I really feel like I'm downgrading if I go for a MacBook.
When I got my first mac it shouldn't have been a PowerBook, I should have went for the iBook (is that what it was called?)
For the last 4 Months, all I've used my PB for is: writing with Word and Final Draft, iTunes (movie, music, tv shows), converting for itunes, e-mail, internet, and Adium (chatting). I'd like to start a website showcasing my University Media work.
MacBook Pro :: Comparing The New MacBook Pro 13" MagSafe Connector?
May 21, 2010Does anyone else here prefer the old MacBook Pro 13" MagSafe connector to the new one?
I understand that the new one is made of aluminum and is more streamlined and will not bend off when using the computer on your lap. But the parallel configuration of the cord means it's either getting in the way of all your ports or you have to loop it to the back, which isn't always the best solution when you're on the go. I also noticed that the MagSafe wobbles a bit when it's connected, and the magnetic force doesn't seem to be as strong.
The MagSafe on my 2009 MacBook Pro 13" is solid. Perfect fit, great attachment strength, and I actually find the perpendicular cord placement more convenient for my uses. The white plastic tip doesn't match as well with the aluminum unibody, but it's not a problem for me.
Anyone else with me on this one?

Nov 15, 2006I am leaving for a week long trip and many parts of it will not be able to run the computer off of the powercord, which is a problem because I get about 40mins of wordprocessing use out of it when I run the battery alone. Can someone explain what the significance of these levels are for my Powerbook G4 15'' (Alm) 1.25GHz, namely the cycle count and full charge/remaining capacity?

(i believe the Aluminium Powerbooks and the MacBook Pros are using the SAME keyboard, so which one you like best? my girlfriend had an ibook and the keyboard was "alright", better than ALL the PC keyboards out there, but i had an AlPowebook and that keyboard was BLISS!! i currently own a Blackbook and i REALLY dig the keyboard, but the powerbook's keyboard was by far the coolest/easiest/most confortable keyboard EVER.

With CS3 now, I'm considering an upgrade from my 15" powerbook 1.67 to a macbook pro 2.33. However, I would have to keep my Adobe CS2 for probably a few months longer before I can afford the upgrade to CS3..
Would the 2.33 + 2gb RAM run the same or faster than 1.67 + 1.5gb RAM even with a non-native program like Adobe CS2?

1. Is the Display better than the last generations? ( In particular the high res)
2. Someone said in another post boot time is slower than the 2009 C2D MBP? Can a few people confirm this?
I have read a few people say the new screens are less brighter than previous models and this has me very concerned? Of course I hope they actually turned up the brightness setting before making such claims.

May 19, 2010A truly non scientific test ...
The '09 15" MBP C2D 2.8ghz, 512vram comparing to April/10 15" MBP i7, 512vram both have 4gb ram and 256ssd.
The '09 allows the user to choose the graphic card setting but you have to log out first ...
The new '10 MBP has 'auto switching' and decides what to do for you, (until Apple releases a fix, which many feel they won't do).
In our experience the '09 MBP runs cool, noticeably cooler on your lap for example in integrated mode .... But when you switch to the discrete card then you can feel it's quite a lot warmer.
Battery Meter - On full battery, switching from discrete to integrated mode adds 1 hour 41 minutes.
With the new 2010 models choosing to run in discrete mode, even when seemingly unnecessary it makes the machine feel much warmer on the bottom almost uncomfortable. That was noticed in the '09 MBP too when only when running in discrete mode, but when running in integrated it runs very cool.
Battery life is about the same on both machines, Apple advertises it increased over the '09 models, in our real world experience not the case.
This first step into Intel Graphics and these being first version machines unless you really need to upgrade now I wouldn't ... If you have an '09 or an '08 MBP chances are it's doing it work just fine and you'll notice minimal improvements and perhaps take a step backward going from Nvidia graphics to this new Intel idea .... it's not perfected yet.
Therefore unless you need/want to run in discrete mode often I'd wait until the next revision/update or at least until the graphics switching concerns are addressed by Apple.

Nov 22, 2009I have a Windows XP, and on it, I sometimes play FPS (First Person Shooter) Games. The ones I play (*if you want to know which ones, I posted them below*) run OK on my current computer. Since my computer itself is quite slow, I decided to buy the new MacBook soon (Not MacBook Pro or Air, because I am still a student, and that would be too expensive for me)
My current PC has the Graphic Card [NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE] on it, while the new MacBook has [NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G] on it (Apple calls it [NVIDIA GeForce 9400M]).
I was wondering if I could still play my FPS Games on the MacBook, so my main Question is:
- Which of the two above named NVIDIA Graphic Card is better? and a sub-question:
- Is the better one better in all things?

Feb 29, 2008So I've got a 2.0 GHz, white MacBook with 1gb ram, and a G4 Powerbook 1.67 with 1gb of ram. The major software difference between the two is the OS, the MacBook is running Leopard. So, I noticed the MacBook started to lag a little from when it was new, so when I upgraded to Leopard I did a clean install. Still noticed the lag so I checked my ram, and here's what I got:
The Powerbook was running the same exact apps (iTunes, iChat, iPhoto, Safari) as the MacBook, and even after loading dashboard on the Powerbook it still used only 500mb of ram and 4.45gb of Virtual Ram. The MacBook was using 615mb of ram and 32 GB OF VIRTUAL MEMORY?I thought it might just be counting space set aside, but I checked the apps and adding all them up is about 32gb. They both have the same iPhoto library yet the powerbook's only took up 240mb of virtual ram and the macbook's over 1000mb.
I realize there are some slight differences (different iChat, spaces was running) but why in gods name would it make the MacBook use almost 7 times the amount of virtual ram!

Jun 22, 2009I am currently at the beach and I have my Powerbook G4 12'' and my father's MacBook operating. Both have OSX 10.4.11 running. My father's MacBook, which is approximately 3 years old versus my older Powerbook, is picking up several internet connections from the surrounding houses in the area but for whatever reason, my older Powerbook only picks up about 1/3 the amount of internet connections. Does anyone know why this is the case? Do the newer MacBook's have improved components in terms of their airports that allow them to pick up more signals? Is there a setting I can change on my older Powerbook that could improve my signal reception.

Jul 29, 2008I'm in a bit of a quandry. I'm off on a plane for a wedding and some family holidays for 2.5 weeks, and as usual, life and work are not going to let me off the hook until I get some more things done for the office.
I need to get some graphics done, and I've been using Pages. Not high end, but the program does a great job for the brochures my department needs to get out. Because I'm traveling, I won't be able to use my iMac or Mac Mini (Intel CD2 versions). So, it's back to my aging 17" G4 PB. I have the last one before they switched (sigh) - it's the 1.67 GHz. Great for everyday use; not so fast anymore for photo/graphics use. I normally use a small 12" HP tablet for travel and teaching, but it doesn't run Mac software of course.
I was all set to get a MacBook Air - mainly for its portability - but then one of the retail specialists advised that if I'm handing large photos (yes, I will be), then the MB Air might be not be the workhorse I'm looking for. I need to ensure decent resolution for press/prints. For only $200 Cdn more, I can obviously get the MB Pro. I've decided that if I pursue this, I'd go with the 15" for more portability. But now we get into the never-ending "wait for the update" drama. The stickler is that I like to travel light as possible, and I don't think the 15" qualifies. I'd like for whatever I get to be more versatile

Oct 14, 2008Personally I think Apple did a good job on the new Macbook. It is much more powerful than the old Macbook, and it is more portable than the Macbook Pro. For people who want the old 12'' Powerbook back, I think this is almost perfect.

Aug 6, 2006I need a new laptop and I've decided to make the move from PC to Mac. I think the thing that's bothered me most about the dell laptop I've been using for the past 4 years is that it's quite heavy (I think somwhere around 8 pounds) and bulky.
I fell in love with the powerbook 12", but held off in part for financial reasons, and in part because I was hoping there would be a 12" macbook pro.
I hear great things about the macbook, but trying it out in the store, it seems to be just as big as my Dell and almost as heavy (well, at least quite a bit heavier than what I remember the 12" feeling like).
at $1199, apple is offering a refurbished powerbook which seems to offer as much if not more than the macbook
I'm a comic book writer that travels quite a lot, so here's what I'd like:
To be able to use MS Word and Final draft
To be able to use photoshop (really just to open photoshop files, not to do much to the artwork itself)
To have something very light to travel with, but still big enough to do a significant amount of work on without straining my eyes or feeling like the keyboard is cramped
and I guess possibly to play games, notably civ iv, although it seems neither the powerbook or the macbook is good for that (the powerbook at least has a dedicated videocard)
it's mostly the size thing that's causing the hangup...I think the macbook is just big enough to be a problem on planes, not fitting on the fold out tray.
