MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Space - 216 GB Left After Erase / Install

Aug 17, 2009

I just received my new MacBook Pro. It came with 250 gb of hd space. I had to do an erase and install on it because of an issue that came up while using the migrant assistant. So, after doing the erase/install it says that I only have 216 gb of space left? And thats without the applications CD that I have to put in which will be about 4 gb. I believe when I first turned the computer on before doing the erase/install it had about 235?

Windows On Mac :: What Is The Minimum Recommended Hard Drive Space Needed For A 7(x64) Install

Jul 4, 2010

I have a MBP 13.3" w/ 4GB of RAM and an Intel G2 160GB SSD. I will need to install Windows 7 and one third-party application (not very large).

So I'm wondering, assuming I only need the OS install and the third-party application takes up minimal space, and I will not be installing anything other than whatever comes with the truckload of windows updates, what is the suggested partition size for Win7 (x64)?

Also, is there anything special I need to do (TRIM?) regarding my SSD?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Lost Hard Drive Space

Mar 19, 2012

I previously had a Windows 7 Boot Camp partition of roughly 50GB on my 256GB MacBook Air. I removed this partition after Wind'ohs driving me crazy after a while. However, now my Mac partition is only 200GB, and I'm not able to increase its size. Also, my Recovery HD shows up in permanently in Finder and Disk Utility.I now need to (sadly...) reinstall Windows, but Boot Camp won't partition my drive, giving me the error: "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition". What's going on with my partitions? The Recovery HD seems to be causing the problem, but I don't understand why I can't use the 50GB of space that is empty.

After installing a new version of java I discovered that my hard drive had lost about 55Gb of space, I emptied the trash and gained about 8 Gb. As Iwrite this I am watching my HD space decrease by about .01gb every 10 seconds. I Am in the process of using Time Machine to restore to a time before the upgrade. Well that didn,t work as it  has just told me that there isn't,t enough space to copy my hd.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Freeing Up Hard Drive Space

Jun 30, 2012

I am giving my son my old macbook air, and wanted to free up as much hard drive space as possible.  I deleted my user account, and I expected there to be about 225 GB of free space.  There is not, however.  When I check the storage, it says there is nearly 78 GB of "Backups."  My question is whether that backup is from my old account, and ultimately, where can I find this to delete it to free up the space.

I also have another macbook air that I plan to sell.  What is the best way to erase the contents of the computer without deleting the OS. I plan to sell it, and obviously don't want the next purchaser to have access to my old data.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Missing Hard Drive Space: >600GB?

Mar 20, 2012

I have a mid 2011 21.5" 2.7 GHZ I5 IMac with a 1 TB HDD.  It is reporting that the startup disk is full (<8gb left). I have surveyed the hard drive and found the "users" folder is using 972GB.The sole "user" folder (me) is using 972 GB An exploration and sum of "folder size" of each of the underlying folders (there are 8: Audio books, Desktop, Documents, Download, Movies, Music, Picture and Public) collectively sums to 316,6GB.  The system tool in "about the iMac" (storage tab) shows "other" allocated a 893,97GB. Where is the missing 640GB plus of space?  Please can anyone advise me how to identify where space has been allocated and how to rectify the problem?

I have done the following: All updates are installedVerified the partition - no faultsTimemachine - never been activatedre-indexed spotlight as suggested in a support article.deleted a dormant user (6GB) and deleted their dataI have emptied the trash. What else can i do?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Simply Clean Install On A Fresh Hard Drive?

Apr 21, 2012

This nonsense: To upgrade your Mac to OS X Lion, you must be running OS X Snow Leopard. If you have OS X v10.5 Leopard, purchase OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard now and install it on your Mac. Then buy OS X Lion as a digital download from the Mac App Store- seems very very un-apple.

So let me get this straight: I have to install an outdated OS (snow Leopard) in order to install Lion. ???

Remember when an OS was self contained, not an add-on upgrade feature?

I am puzzled- I would simply like to boot my mac pro from leopard (current os), and install LION on a newly placed, freshly formatted internal hard drive on same computer. Why would i need to have the intermediary step?

The folks at apple store couldn't answer- even the genius folk weren't sure- dissappointing at best-

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Hard Drive Space Being Used As A "preview Document"?

Jun 19, 2012

I'm assisting a friend with an issue that now perturbs me. He came to me noting that his HD has suddenly seen a huge jump in used space. I've seen that before due to several complications, so I needed to narrow it down. We also checked common issues, such as:Trash not emptied (he's rigorous on that)iPhoto separate Trash not emptied (he doesn't use iPhoto, but after checking it's got nothing as it is)Downloads not emptied (he provided me with the existing DL folder space, below. It's tiny relative to the space in question)Mail attachments issue: ~/user/Library is small. After asking for some extra information, I have this to start:

Surprisingly, "Other" is not the item causing the issue, or signifying it, which is usually the case for things like the recursive-Mail attachments issue. To double check, I also asked him to provide me with the ~/user contents so I could see if there was any mismatch. Note: HE IS THE ONLY USER ON THIS HARD DRIVE. He provided me with: APPLICATIONS 36.2mbDESKTOP 12.73mbDOCS 27.32mbDOWNLOADS 994.3 mbDROPBOX (synced to online only)GOOGLE DRIVE 414mbLIBRARY: 11.46gbMOVIES 783mbMUSIC 94.19 gbPICTURES 365 gb ~PUBLIC 0mSITES 0m

Hence his confusion, since his pictures are showing as ~185GB smaller in his User than the stated size in the About This Mac. Note, the ~/user/Library folder is relatively in line with normal sizes, maybe a bit bigger (I checked, App Support is the main driver of this), but not the size we'd need to be taking up ~300GB. We were also able to glean this information through a third party app, it recognises an additional 193GB in "preview document" items, that, as you can see below, when broken down into the individual files appear to be mere copies of existing master images:

(The selected segment in the upper right, Preview Document, is then broken down in the bottom left. It's almost entirely pictures)

Now I was under the impression Preview/Versions only take up a miniscule space on the HD since they don't FULLY copy the master file, they more create a bridge between the two that amounts to a few MB. Is it possible that it's taking up a much larger amount than intended here (a la the same basic mail attachment problem, but with Preview)? If so, what directory would that be located in?

We have ALSO searched /Volumes to see if there's any hidden/phantom volume that was created and is eating up space. No such thing found, only MacHD and MobileBackups, which is showing as 0kb. In lieu of any other solution in future I might consider trashing it, but we'll see.

We're currently re-indexing the Mac HD to see if we get any major changes in the numbers. Failing that, I'll be running an HD and permissions verification from the recovery system just to be sure. Once the index is done, I'll also have to check the other MacHD/master folders, i.e. System and Library and so on, in case there's something about them to tip me off--including simply being larger than expected.

Again, I am a bit confused as I've never seen the space-eating problem be relegated to images alone, nor described as "previews". This one's new to me. So, what am I missing/not noticing/in need of?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Install A SSD Hard Drive On A 2011 IMac Without Voiding The Warranty?

Mar 14, 2012

I purchased an iMac last October and my line of work demands extensive use of After Effects and Final Cut Pro. My iMac is fitted with the standard 1TB SATA hard drive, and lately I considered installing an SSD drive as I have been experiencing lags. In all my naivete I asked Apple Store/Service outlet where I originally bought my iMac, but they turned me down, claiming that "they are not allowed to order the extra parts and if they do proceed then my warranty will be void". Which means that about 2 years of AppleCare will go out of the window. I can always do it myself, but at the risk of damaging my iMac and facing a null warranty on top of it. I am still reeling in disbelief, is it really the case that Apple prohibits its customers from legitimately upgrading their computer at their own stores?

OS X :: Disappearing Memory From Hard Drive / Reduces Drive Space While Watching Movie

Jul 20, 2010

I have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.

I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband. Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?

OS X :: Hard Drive Space Went Down To 0 KB

Dec 14, 2010

Last time I checked I had at least 6gb free space left, and over night, it went down to 0kb. I even deleted some things and it was up to 2gb. After awhile, it went back down to 0kb. I really don't want to get a new HD, because for some reason my Tiger disk won't read, so that's a little pricey there for both a new HD and Tiger.

OS X :: FileVault - How Much Hard Drive Space Enough

Oct 18, 2010

Trying to turn on FileVault I get a message saying:
There isn't enough space on your hard disk to turn on FileVault. Turning on FileVault requires an additional 132.2 GB of free space on the volume "Macintosh HD". Try emptying the Trash or deleting files you don't need.

Finder says that hard drive "Macintosh HD" has a capacity of 499.76 GB and that 180.42 GB are available. Am I to understand that to run FileVault I would need 312.62 GB (132.2 + 180.42 GB) empty on a 499.76 GB hard drive?! Seems crazy! Might this be related to Parallels 6 or something?
