MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Space - 216 GB Left After Erase / Install
Aug 17, 2009I just received my new MacBook Pro. It came with 250 gb of hd space. I had to do an erase and install on it because of an issue that came up while using the migrant assistant. So, after doing the erase/install it says that I only have 216 gb of space left? And thats without the applications CD that I have to put in which will be about 4 gb. I believe when I first turned the computer on before doing the erase/install it had about 235?

Jun 28, 2012I am currently using a 2TB external hard drive to access all my photos and music when working with Lightroom 4 and iTunes. My 2TB storage space is almost getting full and has started me wondering what I'd need to do to continue working this way. I'm assuming even if I get another 2 or 3TB external hard drive, I'd still have to select only 1 external hard drive for Lightroom to access... Same goes for iTunes. What if I have music in both external hard drives?

After I did this all my files have disappeared, but it still shows that all the space that was taken up before is still being occupied. Is there any way I can recover my files? Jul 18, 2010I have a 1TB external LaCie hard drive. Presently, it is loaded with about 300GBs of space so I should have around 650GBs left. However, it is only showing about 240GBs left. I think the problem is that I used to use this hard drive for Time Machine backups, I deleted them via the recycle bin. I checked the recycle bin, nothing there. I verified the disk, everything ok, I repaired it as well. I even erased the empty space.

I already know I'm not supposed to pick 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' because I believe that is to use it as a boot drive. So should I pick 'Mac OS Extended' or maybe 'Free Space'?

Sep 2, 2014My 500gb iMac (purchased April 2010) is about at capacity. 350gb of space is taken up by home movies (.mov) in iMovie. I bought an external hard drive and have moved about 200gb over to that drive.Â
After transfer, I deleted the original Events off iMovie and emptied the trash. I checked in both iMovie and in Finder and no longer see those files present on the Mac. Â
I thought this was going smooth and everything worked perfectly, but….when i went to check how much storage space i created on the Mac, the amount of available space barely budged (i moved 200gb of data to the new drive and i created about 30gb of space on the Mac).Â
Are these "deleted" files hidden somewhere and I need to go delete from somewhere else? How do I make sure I get back the storage that i need?Â

Mar 19, 2012I previously had a Windows 7 Boot Camp partition of roughly 50GB on my 256GB MacBook Air. I removed this partition after Wind'ohs driving me crazy after a while. However, now my Mac partition is only 200GB, and I'm not able to increase its size. Also, my Recovery HD shows up in permanently in Finder and Disk Utility.I now need to (sadly...) reinstall Windows, but Boot Camp won't partition my drive, giving me the error: "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition". What's going on with my partitions? The Recovery HD seems to be causing the problem, but I don't understand why I can't use the 50GB of space that is empty.

As Iwrite this I am watching my HD space decrease by about .01gb every 10 seconds. I Am in the process of using Time Machine to restore to a time before the upgrade. Well that didn,t work as it has just told me that there isn't,t enough space to copy my hd.Â

Jun 30, 2012I am giving my son my old macbook air, and wanted to free up as much hard drive space as possible. I deleted my user account, and I expected there to be about 225 GB of free space. There is not, however. When I check the storage, it says there is nearly 78 GB of "Backups." My question is whether that backup is from my old account, and ultimately, where can I find this to delete it to free up the space.Â
I also have another macbook air that I plan to sell. What is the best way to erase the contents of the computer without deleting the OS. I plan to sell it, and obviously don't want the next purchaser to have access to my old data.Â

Dec 28, 2010I am trying to export a two hour movie to watch on dvd after editing for 4 months, and was running on 12gb left on my macbook. I then tried to export it HD (8gb) and it eventually failed, saying it had no space left. Even though the movie wasnt exported, it took my 12gb left down to 4gb, so I tried high quality exporting, and it almost finished but failed right at the end, complaining of no space, and even when the file wasnt where I asked it to be it still took my memory away, now leaving me with 400mb. I am so annoyed, and
I want to know if I can export the movie to my external harddrive (plug in usb) as an mp4 file, and if so how? This would be a HUGE help as I dont want to have wasted so much time!

Mar 20, 2012I have a mid 2011 21.5" 2.7 GHZ I5 IMac with a 1 TB HDD. It is reporting that the startup disk is full (<8gb left). I have surveyed the hard drive and found the "users" folder is using 972GB.The sole "user" folder (me) is using 972 GB An exploration and sum of "folder size" of each of the underlying folders (there are 8: Audio books, Desktop, Documents, Download, Movies, Music, Picture and Public) collectively sums to 316,6GB. The system tool in "about the iMac" (storage tab) shows "other" allocated a 893,97GB. Where is the missing 640GB plus of space? Please can anyone advise me how to identify where space has been allocated and how to rectify the problem? Â

Mar 14, 2012I've bought a 1 TB iomega ego mac edition II external fire wire drive. Once connected it asked whether i want to create a password and whether i want my data encrypted, to which i answered yes. Then a time machine backup started and failed after backing up 5.25 GB out of 39 GB of my data with the following error: "The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup". When i look at time machine it shows there is 994.29 GB available on iomega ego drive. The drive then went into: "Encrypting Backup Disk" message and it takes forever.

Jun 19, 2012I'm assisting a friend with an issue that now perturbs me. He came to me noting that his HD has suddenly seen a huge jump in used space. I've seen that before due to several complications, so I needed to narrow it down. We also checked common issues, such as:Trash not emptied (he's rigorous on that)iPhoto separate Trash not emptied (he doesn't use iPhoto, but after checking it's got nothing as it is)Downloads not emptied (he provided me with the existing DL folder space, below. It's tiny relative to the space in question)Mail attachments issue: ~/user/Library is small. After asking for some extra information, I have this to start:
Surprisingly, "Other" is not the item causing the issue, or signifying it, which is usually the case for things like the recursive-Mail attachments issue. To double check, I also asked him to provide me with the ~/user contents so I could see if there was any mismatch. Note: HE IS THE ONLY USER ON THIS HARD DRIVE. He provided me with:Â APPLICATIONS 36.2mbDESKTOP 12.73mbDOCS 27.32mbDOWNLOADS 994.3 mbDROPBOX (synced to online only)GOOGLE DRIVE 414mbLIBRARY: 11.46gbMOVIES 783mbMUSIC 94.19 gbPICTURES 365 gb ~PUBLIC 0mSITES 0mÂ
Hence his confusion, since his pictures are showing as ~185GB smaller in his User than the stated size in the About This Mac. Note, the ~/user/Library folder is relatively in line with normal sizes, maybe a bit bigger (I checked, App Support is the main driver of this), but not the size we'd need to be taking up ~300GB. We were also able to glean this information through a third party app, it recognises an additional 193GB in "preview document" items, that, as you can see below, when broken down into the individual files appear to be mere copies of existing master images:

Now I was under the impression Preview/Versions only take up a miniscule space on the HD since they don't FULLY copy the master file, they more create a bridge between the two that amounts to a few MB. Is it possible that it's taking up a much larger amount than intended here (a la the same basic mail attachment problem, but with Preview)? If so, what directory would that be located in?Â
We have ALSO searched /Volumes to see if there's any hidden/phantom volume that was created and is eating up space. No such thing found, only MacHD and MobileBackups, which is showing as 0kb. In lieu of any other solution in future I might consider trashing it, but we'll see. Â
We're currently re-indexing the Mac HD to see if we get any major changes in the numbers. Failing that, I'll be running an HD and permissions verification from the recovery system just to be sure. Once the index is done, I'll also have to check the other MacHD/master folders, i.e. System and Library and so on, in case there's something about them to tip me off--including simply being larger than expected.Â
Again, I am a bit confused as I've never seen the space-eating problem be relegated to images alone, nor described as "previews". This one's new to me. So, what am I missing/not noticing/in need of?

Mar 25, 2012I had a black screen of death moment and since then, I've had a few weird anomalies with my iMac. I ran disk repair while logged in, and it told me there was a problem. I restarted in restore mode, and when I repaired the drive, it found no problems. I don't believe it.Â
1. My external hard drives do not appear on the desktop. They are mounted, and I can see them when I open the finder and the disk utility, but they won't show up on the desktop like they used to. I have played with finder preferences shutting the option to see them off and on, but this doesn't change anything. Very strnage.Â
2. iTunes completely whacked out. It "restored" itself by magic. Now all the Date Added dates are March 23rd. All of my podcasts disappeared, and all my settings were reset. I have no idea what else I lost. I want to restore from a back up, but I don't know how to do just my iTunes.

Apr 5, 2012I have recently upgraded my computer. My external hard drive, a LaCie 320GB, is full of stuff that I want to get rid of. Can't delete it. Looked into the permissions and it turns out they belong to an unknown user. I tried clicking the little lock and trying to change permissions, but it will not let me interact with the drop down menu. Â
I believe there is a terminal command to reset permissions locally, however, I cannot figure out how to do so on an external drive.Â

Apr 18, 2012I have a 2010 Mac Book Pro that I just downloaded the new OS X Lion for the upgrades ext... I haven't had any other problems except that before I downloaded the Lion my Mac would recognize my external hard drive (WD passport). And now it doesn't, I even go to the finder and it doesn't even show up under "computer" to make sure there isn't anything wrong with my external hard drive I plugged it into another mac that doesn't have Lion and it would work. My external drive has everything 1TG of everything.
