I lost around 6 gigs of hd space after I installed 10.7.4 update. Same thing happens with a clean install.

My computer's hard drive space keeps changing. For exaomple, there are 50 GB free space, and then a few hrs later I will check the info again and it will read 47 GB free, 45 GB free, etc. It keeps changing throughout the day. I have not downloaded anything, not added any files, just browsed the web. Why does it keep chaning like that? Usually when I restart the computer, it reads what it normally should, eg. 50 GB free.

I am currently using a 2TB external hard drive to access all my photos and music when working with Lightroom 4 and iTunes. My 2TB storage space is almost getting full and has started me wondering what I'd need to do to continue working this way. I'm assuming even if I get another 2 or 3TB external hard drive, I'd still have to select only 1 external hard drive for Lightroom to access... Same goes for iTunes. What if I have music in both external hard drives?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am unable to move files from a 250 GB backup hard drive to a 1.0 TB b/c I keep getting the warning that isn’t enough space. Get Info says that 999.72 GB on it are in use. But the 1.0 TB was almost empty. If I add up the space of each of the 3 or 4 items on it, I get less than 20GB. What’s taking up the other 979 GB?For background, I now have iMac backed up with LaCie 2Big NAS system. The 250 GB is primarily to hold iPhoto Library and backup copies of original photos. the 250 GB is full. So I am trying to switch over from 250 to the 1.0 TB for photos. Moved a few smaller files over, but then could move no more. Thought of running disk utility to erase the 1.0 TB, but now I can’t move the few files on it back to 250 GB, but of error message that it too is full.I did run Repair Disk on 1.0TB before started trying to move files.

On my 27 inch, late 2012 iMac i have one terabyte on my hard drive. I am running out of space because the Other is so big? What does 'Other' contain and how do I reduce the amount of space it takes up
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo my brother was upgrading to Snow Leopard from Leopard tonight...and during the install, the time remaining went negative, then shortly thereafter everything froze up so he was forced to power down and since then nothing has been right. He can't restore from backup because apparently there isn't enough space on the disk, then we tried to repair persmissions, it says it cannot and to reformat hard drive...so we do that, reboot and then try to re-install leopard only for now, and when it comes up to choose a destination drive he is just a blank box, his hard drive doesn't show up!
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy 500gb iMac (purchased April 2010) is about at capacity. 350gb of space is taken up by home movies (.mov) in iMovie. I bought an external hard drive and have moved about 200gb over to that drive.Â
After transfer, I deleted the original Events off iMovie and emptied the trash. I checked in both iMovie and in Finder and no longer see those files present on the Mac. Â
I thought this was going smooth and everything worked perfectly, but….when i went to check how much storage space i created on the Mac, the amount of available space barely budged (i moved 200gb of data to the new drive and i created about 30gb of space on the Mac).Â
Are these "deleted" files hidden somewhere and I need to go delete from somewhere else? How do I make sure I get back the storage that i need?Â
Over the past few days, I've been pruning my hard drive of excess files and moving many of them to external hard drives. My machine is a year-old Macbook Pro. Even after removing over 100GB of files from my 750GB internal hard drive, the info pane for my hard disc still tells me I have only about 60GB of free space.I have been using Disc Inventory X to find files and get rid of them. My latest scan of my HD with this program yields 450GB of actual files stored on my computer, yet the info pane for my HD (powered by Finder) is still telling me I have about 76 GB free. Does anyone have any ideas for how this discrepancy could exist? If the actual files on my computer only come to 450GB, how can I free up the remaining 250GB of space that seem to be missing?

I only have like 8 gb left on my macbook's hard drive. Are there any programs I can run that will defrag/free up space? How much does Apple Store typically charge to upgrade a hard drive? How easy is it to do myself?

Can anyone explain to me why, on my iMac's 500GB hard drive, the displayed size of the only 4 items on it is 207GB, that the info box on the HD itself says 393GB used? Unless I failed grade 1 math, 500GB - 207GB = 293GB, right? So where's the missing ~100GB? That's a lot of space I know I haven't filled up.Â

I want to update the software and it says there is not enough disc space.Says to do something with "startup disc"?
Info:
iMac, iOS 5.1
I've backed up all the contents of my computer to a 1TB external hard drive connected by USB (LaCie Porsche). Time Machine is working perfectly with it! Now, I want to erase lots of files from the startup disc or do whatever I need to do in order that I might have way more available memory on the startup disc. I need to know that my backups of iPhoto are truly on the external drive, and then I need to do something so that the memory available on my desktop is maximized.

This is what im trying to do. I have a macbook with 120gb hard drive. thats not enough space from my music collection. So i was wondering how to make itunes run off a external hard drive. I looked around and found was for a PC.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.
I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband. Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?
Last time I checked I had at least 6gb free space left, and over night, it went down to 0kb. I even deleted some things and it was up to 2gb. After awhile, it went back down to 0kb. I really don't want to get a new HD, because for some reason my Tiger disk won't read, so that's a little pricey there for both a new HD and Tiger.
View 10 Replies View RelatedTrying to turn on FileVault I get a message saying:
There isn't enough space on your hard disk to turn on FileVault. Turning on FileVault requires an additional 132.2 GB of free space on the volume "Macintosh HD". Try emptying the Trash or deleting files you don't need.
Finder says that hard drive "Macintosh HD" has a capacity of 499.76 GB and that 180.42 GB are available. Am I to understand that to run FileVault I would need 312.62 GB (132.2 + 180.42 GB) empty on a 499.76 GB hard drive?! Seems crazy! Might this be related to Parallels 6 or something?
When you bought your MBP how much space did you have available out of the box. My 80 gig hardrive has a capacity of 74.21 and I never checked how much was used when I bought it. Reason I am asking is, I have 42.4 gigs left and I cant figure out where all that space went. I can account for 9 gigs worth of itunes music and videos, and maybe another 4 or so gigs of other stuff. What about the rest? How do I check if I have a HUGE plist file or something?

between music and movies 130 are accounted for, i dont know what i have on my computer that would take up almost 50 more GB.
When I bought leopard and installed it I was left with about 3 gigs on my hard drive so I deleted final cut studio 2 and Adobe Photoshop, however when I did this I checked my free space on my hard drive and it didn't free up anything and I know that it should have given me over 60 gigs of free space.
