OS X V10.7 Lion :: Zoom In Shortcut On Czech Keyboard
Mar 21, 2012
I'm using Mac Mini with a Logitech keyboard with a built-in trackpad as HTPC. Therefore, I need a keyboard shortcut for zooming in and out in a browser (any browser). No pinch to zoom on Logitech. Ok, regularly, there is cmd plus / cmd minus to do this. On the english keyboard layout, these keys are next to each other and next to backspace. And it works. However, I am from the Czech republic and therefore using Czech layout. In it, minus is mapped as the first key left to the right shift. And it works for zoom out. BUT, the plus sign is mapped on the numeral 1 and hitting the cmd button alone changes it from plus to the number 1! So there is no way for me to hit the combination of keys cmd and plus.

I tried setting a shortcut for "All Applications" -> "Zoom" so that I can have a keyboard shorcut for the green button/maximize button at the top (you can probably tell I just switched over from Windows). I set it to control+Z (^Z) and in FireFox when I look at the Window menu at the top I see "Zoom ^Z" like it should work, but it doesn't. When I click control+Z the Window menu at top sort of flashes/highlights real quick but the zoom function is not called. When I manually go to Window-->Zoom, it works.

I created an Automator Service to restart my computer in Bootcamp (since I was getting very tired of having to navigate to the Startup Disk Prefence pane every time). What I would like to do, is make this service have a global keyboard shortcut. However, when I try to set one in the Keyboard Shorcuts preferences (i.e. double-clicking and holding down the desired keys), my computer just beeps at me.
I thought maybe it was not allowing the specific shortcut I was trying - thinking maybe it was already in use. So I tried many other key combinations - enough to come to the conclusion that this was not the issue.

My right Shift Key is acting as a keyboard shortcut to show the desktop. Any time it is pressed, it shows the desktop (not even having to push cmd-shift or some other variation). I've restored keyboard shortcuts to defaults, repaired permissions, and restarted my computer several times. Nothing works. I'm not sure if this was something I did in Snow Leopard a while back that now can't disable in Lion?

When I want to scroll through a folder with pictures, I usually drag the folder from the Finder to the Preview icon in my dock. Is there a way to open Preview with a keyboard shortcut? I know about pressing the spacebar to open Quicklook, but I prefer Preview.

For years I'm trying to find a keyboard shortcut for 'strikethrough' or 'struck through' or however you want to call text with a horizontal line through it in OS X Mail. You'd think it is a popular feature since the strikethrough style has been on text editors since the earliest days of the Mac, well at least for decades I can remember and on the other hand it's easy to implement in HTML email since there's a HTML tag for it, <s>triketrough, just like there is for <b>old and <i>talic.
I did manage to add a shortcut for strikethrough by adding a style to 'favorite styles' via the 'system wide' styles menu. (You can do this by making a text selection strikethrough and then add this style to the styles menu via, for example, using the right mouse button or CTRL-clicking on a text selection and choosing Fonts, submenu Styles. I named it Struck though (or maybe it was already there, I'm not sure).
Then I added a shortcut for it in System Preferences / Keyboard / Shortcuts (Select Applications in the bottem of the left colomn, click the + sign below the second column, choose 'All applications' else it won't work in Textedit for some reason, name it EXACTLY after your menu item, for example in my case Struck through — and choose a keyboard shortcut that is not already in use. Watch out: somehow it doesn't warn you any more for used shortcuts. If I recall correctly it did warm me in older versions of OS X.) This shortcut is working in Textedit but still not in Mail. I really hoped this new version of Mail 5.2 would finally have a fix for this. Is there really no way to use a shortcut for strikethrough in Mail?

Is there a way to create a keyboard shortcut so I automatically fill out (i.e.) login information/email addresses instead of have to type the whole thing.
I frequently fill out my private and work email and would like to make that faster. Like on the iOS you can crate short words that is replaced with a long word when you fill out forms etc.

if it is possible to open a specific file or program by mapping a keyboard shortcut.
For example, FN-F1 could open "ABC.DOC" or FN-F2 could open Excel.
Is anything like this possible, either within Mac OS X (10.7.4) or with a third party program?

I set my fn key to display all windows (same as F3 default). I would like to remove this, but it doesn't show up on the system preferences shortcut list. Pressing "Restore Defaults" does nothing to alleviate the problem. Is there a way that I could reset all of my default shortcuts through terminal or something more powerful than system preferences?

I use Macbiff to check my email. I guess you'd say it's a background app; it has no dock icon or cmd-tab icon; it resides solely in the menu bar. To check email, I have to click its menu bar icon and select Check Now from the drop down menu. I have created a keyboard shortcut for "Check Now", but I can't figure out a way to give the app focus in order to use the shorcut, aside from clicking the icon, which obviously defeats the purpose. FN-ctrl-F8 gets me to the menu bar, but not to Macbiff...this only works for OS based menu bar items, not 3rd party apps. Aside from a 3rd party keyboard app, is there a way to do what I'm trying to do? 3rd party apps don't see Macbiff as a running application anyhow.

You know how in Windows you can use the tab key to tab through fields in a dialogue box until the OK or Cancel button is selected, then use the enter key to execute one's choice? Well how does one do that in Leopard? For example, I am entering a lot of transactions into my accounting software (MYOB) and each entry has to be recorded by hitting the OK button. It's highlighted in blue but hitting the enter key doesn't do it and I cannot tab to it. It would speed things up greatly if I didn't have to keep mousing to the button.

It wasn't until I got my new MPB that I realized how much I use Spaces on a daily basis, when I had my whitebook.
I've set up Spaces on my new uMBP but can't find a way to "view all my spaces." You know, the overview look of spaces, when you can see all your spaces at a glance and click to switch on whichever space you wanna enter.
Well, I can't for the life of my figure out how to set up a keyboard shortcut for this. Back on my whitebook it was always set to F10, but looking at the new layout of buttons on the top row of the keyboard, there are some buttons I'd like to leaver untouched.
F1+F2: Screen brightness controls I'd like to leave untouch since they're obviously useful.
F3: This is Expose right? Giving me a view of all open windows. Well, can't I just do this already by moving 4 fingers downward on the trackpad? If that's the case, which I think it is I wouldn't mind assigning F3 a different shortcut, like Spaces. But how?
F4: Dashboard. On the whitebook it was always F12, guess it'll just take some getting used to.
F5+F6: Backlit keyboard dimmers, i'm fine leaving thouse as is.
F7-F12: Controls media with the back, play/pause, next button which I love & the sound controls which I don't mind.
In System Prefs. in Spaces I'll set "Activate Spaces" to F3 but still F3 will do Expose. I'm not sure how to change this.
& I have no idea what secondary mouse click or middle mouse button is...i'm guessing this has to do with mighty mouse? Me no have one, just using the trackpad..

Or perhaps a keyboard shortcut to lock the machine, like CTRL+ALT+DEL for Windows 2000/XP?
