How do I set up my Time Machine for the 2 separate accounts on my iMac?
Info:iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3)
I have an iMac 27 (end of year 2009) I5.It has 1 TB internal and I want to replace it with a 2 TB internal. I have time machine backups on an external hard drive that has been connected via Firewire. I have another iMac (my son's)Imac 24 Intel Core 2 Duo that has it's own separate Time machine backup to it's own separate firewire connected external drive. Both machines are completely up to date with the latest version of Lion and all other necessary software updates. When the internal hardrive is replaced - I want to use my latest time machine backup to create one profile on the imac and then use my son's latest time machine back up for a second profile. The end goal being to have everything from my current set up ie: apps, documents, itunes, etc existing in one profile and everything in my son's current set up existing in the other profile. We can both be administrators for the time being as well.I should note even though we both have some of the same apps, we both also have other apps that the other does not.
My profile will be using about 900 gigs of total space. My son's profile will be using about 250 gigs of total space. This is temporary until the new iMac is released. Then I will want to transfer my profile to that leaving my son's intact on the iMac 27 I5.I realize that during the temporary period that Time Machine will be making backups of this entire two profile setup, which I am now understanding as I write this will create a new issue for me when I want to transfer only my profile to the new computer as well. But one bridge to cross at a time, I guess.I need to do this because we must bring his current computer to my father - as his iMac G5 is inoperable. We have been doing this round robin hand me down in our family since IMac DV special edition :-)

I have an iMac 27" desktop. I also use 2 external HD (Seagate type, 3 GB each) each connected via USB 3.0. And lastly I have a 2TB Time Capsule that also serves as my wifi.
Originally I set up my Time Machine preferences to backup my iMac onto my Time Capsule, no problem, worked great. Left it like this for a long time...
then I decided I wanted to use Time Machine to back up my External HD #1 (where I moved all my video project files), onto External HD #2. This worked great, and I left these settings in place for a while.
then I decided it was time to back up my iMac again, so I went into my Time Machine preferences ended the current setup so that I could return to the original settings (backing up the iMac onto the Time Capsule).
...and so problem began.
My thinking was once I got a recent backup made with iMac to Time Capsule configuration then I would go into Time Machine preferences and re-establish the External HD #1 to HD #2 settings... thinking I could continue on this way manually, each week or so, and therefore have 2 different Time Machines each from 2 different sources.
Well, once I ended the set up of HD #1 to HD #2 I couldn't get Time Machine to successfully return to the original iMac to Time Capsule setup. At this point I called apple support; they were able to walk me through some steps to get the Time Machine backing up my iMac onto the Time Capsule, but it required me to delete the original time Machine backup of the iMac on the Time Capsule. Which led to reestablishing the backup (which in this case took almost 2 days to complete).
I have three Macs backing up via Time Machine. They are using an external hard drive connected to one of the machines. These back-ups take place on site every day, but I also want to use the same back-up system to back-up to a second hard drive which can then be stored off-site.I have initiated first back-ups OK using this system, but now when I look to change the back-up drive once a week the machines don’t seem to recognise the earlier back-up files on the external drive and start to make a new back-up each time. The back-ups are all large and I can’t afford the time this is taking. How can I make my drives recognize the earlier back-up files and just perform an incremental back-up rather than a complete new back-up each time.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a Mac from 2006. Bought a new one in 2011. I have a time machine back up from my old mac.. This HD was damaged in 2010 and recently repaired. I bought a new HD and used it with time machine on my new mac. I am looking for something on my old Time Machine... Specifically iTunes playlists.. They are very difficult to find by just searching through the back up folder.. What I want to do is, enter the old time machine on my old HD and export some of the iTunes playlists to my new HD. Then of course go back to my current time machine back up and continue using my computer... Can I do this? and Can I have both Time machine devices connected to the computer at the same time?

I have an external hard drive that I use with my MBP at work. I'd like to buy another external hard drive to keep at home an also use with Time Machine to backup when at home. Will this work with 10.5.6? What I mean is, will Time Machine work if I plug in another hard drive at home, and still work when I plug in my other drive at work?

When doing so, it created a second user account, so all the information I created on the first one over the past few days, it separate from the information I needed transferred over from my time machine? How do I go about merging these two accounts, so I have all my files on one?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using Mail with my .mac account, and this morning tried adding my hotmail and gmail accounts to it. Unfortunately, Mail pulled messages from all three accounts and dumped it into one inbox. Is there a way for me to separate it - so that I have one inbox for one account, another inbox for another account?
I want to keep the mailboxes separate because I use them for different things (work vs home vs general internet shopping, junk mail, etc.), and don't want to miss a work message while mass-deleting junk mail, for example.
How can I set up itunes so that two users on the same laptop can each access separate itunes accounts and libraries?
My fiancee and I use the same laptop, but both have apple accounts and use ITunes. How can we both access our separate libraries from the same computer?

Is there a way to merge two separate iTunes accounts into one? I don't want to "share libraries." I just want one account that once stemmed from two seperate accounts and has all of the purchases and history.

I restored the new machine from the most recent back up of my old iMac which has worked great and looks just like my previous computer. However..when I enter Time Machine it only goes back as far as today and when I try to do a back up it says there is not enough room. I would have hoped that my new iMac would recognise the back up as it's own and reinstate it as normal..but this doesn't seem to be the case.

This computer’s local hostname “-My-iMac.local” is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to “My-iMac-2.local”.
At one statge it got upto 5 before i reset it back in system preferences, sharing, computer name, edit.
I do not want to keep reseitting it and really I have no idea what it is doing or why nor am I aware of what impact its having om my use of my apple products.

I have lost my contacts. I can see them in TM, but they will not restore using the standard procedure. Restoring from iCloud is not an option.I understand that in Snow Leopard it was necessary to go to the following folder in Finder "/users/username/library/application support/address book. start address book " - and restore that folder in TM. However, that folder does not exist in Lion. How do I restore contacts using TM?

My wife and I have 3 email accounts between us (1 personal one each and a joint email for stuff like banks and bills etc.) When we first got an Imac I set all 3 accounts up in MacMail and ran 3 different inboxes which worked ok apart from the fact that when sending emails we would sometimes mistakenly send our emails from the wrong account (eg my wife would send something from my account or vice versa)
this isn't a huge problem and with a bit of concentration would not happen, however it was inconvenient and needless to say I was kicked out of Mail and had to seek refuge in a copy of Thunderbird. (which I just can't to seem to get along with)
Since then I have been trying to find a way for 2 people to co exist in mail without using 2 separate accounts on the mac (this is not an option as the wife won't have it!!)
Is there anyway to run 2 separate Mail programs in one account?
If we do end up having to share one version of mail does anyone having any tips on reducing the likelihood of sending emails from the wrong accounts?
Ever since I upgraded to Lion my iMac freezes or nearly freezes for 5 - 10 minutes every hour while Time Machine updates the back up. What to do? I have tried everything I can think of but its only improved from total freeze while Time Machine backs up to freeze with an occasional few seconds of activity.

Yesterday I used Migration Assistant to recover the contents of a failed MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) from a Time Machine backup to a new MacBook Air (10.7.4). Using the same external disk for backups, I now have a folder for both the old and new machines in
/Volumes/time_machine/Backups.backupdb/
The instructions here

explain how to reconnect time machine to the old machine's backups. Once I've done this and checked that I can access the old backups, can I simply delete the new machine folder to save space?

It has been runing since november 2011.When I start a new backup, as it ask for, it takes at least 24 hours to finish - some times even longer. Is this normal? If not, what do I do?

One Time Capsule at home
One Time Capsule in vacation home
MBP backs up everything on internal hard drive to Time Capsule at home, where we live during summer and spring. When moving to vacation home in fall and winter, MBP backs up everything to Time Capsule in vacation home.
During the 6 months at each residence, the backups work great to the Time Capsule at that particular house. However, after some time (maybe a week?), Time Machine displays an error in Notification Center: "Time Machine can't complete backup to Home Time Capsule" (when in vacation home) or "Time Machine can't complete backup to Vacation Time Capsule" (when at home).
It's obvious that this occurs because Time Machine was set to back up to 2 Time Capsules and expects both of them to be reachable. Is there a way to suppress these Time Machine errors for the time that we're away from one of the Time Capsules?
I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?
