OS X V10.7 Lion :: Safely Stopping Time Machine In Manual Mode?
Mar 24, 2012
I am backing up 113 GB through Time Machine onto an external hard drive, which looks like it will take a couple days but I would like to be able to move my laptop without starting completely over.

Earlier I was thinking I would manually backup all of my data, do a "clean" install of Snow Leopard, and reinstall all of my apps.
I'm now wondering if just doing a clean install and restoring from Time Machine is the way to go. I want to clear out as much "junk" as I can... will this do the trick?
Also, I've deleted a bootcamp partition, will the Time Machine method effectively defrag my HD?

My backup drive bit the dust, big time, so I got a fresh external, but cannot get Time Machine to work.13" Macbook Pro keeps terminating Time Machine and logging out when on power cord when going to screen saver.
I've set the screen saver to start after NEVER, the computer and display sleep to NEVER in Energy Saver, as I have it on an external monitor.Still does not stay logged in.

Ok... So, I have an extremely slow Time Machine backup. Many people do. I've gone through the motions and tried to resolve the issue by doing the suggested restart in Safe Mode. I even followed some of the other tips that are on this string: slow time machine backupÂ
Nothing has worked. I don't use Norton Symantec but I didn't the Norton Remove script through the Console already. I don't run any anti-virus software. Â
This started when I was backing up to at Time Capsule. I backed up to the TC for years before this started. I then moved to backing up (started fresh) to a external HD connected via USB.Â

I just got this Refurb MacBook Pro 15in. 2.66Ghz 32GB HDD and 512MB NVIDIA GFX. And my computer went into sleep mode and when I plugged it back in I had to do a manual reboot because the mouse wouldn't move.. So, I turned it back on let it die to see if it would happen again, and then the computer didn't even go to sleep mode.. What is going on? What should I do?

I am trying to fix a Macbook Pro that has had its /private folder trashed and emptied. Obviously it won't boot unless you you boot in to Single User mode and I'm wondering if its possible to do a Time Machine restore from the terminal, I would need the 2nd more recent Time Machine image which is sitting on a Firewire HDD. Â
I was going to just see if I could find the orignal OSX install disk and just do a fresh install of the OS which I don't mind doing (since everything important is backed up in Dropbox), but I can't seem to find the CD anywhere nearby, so the Time Machine option would be much preferred.Â

I cannot enter the time machine when I press the time machine icon. I press and nothing happens, so I'm not sure even if it is backing up at this point. When i go to my Tme Capsule it has the folder there for back-ups and the most recent, but no access from the icon.

I have a new iMac OS 10.7.3Â I am using a SeaGate 1.5 TB external HD for backup.Â
If I leave the computer on continous everything works fine. It backs up every hour. It has been running fine for over a week. If I set the iMac in energy saver mode, say 10 minutes, when the iMac comes out of sleep mode there is a warning that Time Machine failed.Â
I get the following errors messages:Â "Time Machine could not complete the Backup" "Error while creating the Backup Folder"Â
There is no way to correct it or retry. I have to run disk utility and erase the external HD, re-format, then back everything again.Â
I would prefer to use the energy save feature of the iMac if I could. I tried the Apple Support number and they just said leave the iMac in "energy saver NEVER" so the iMac stays on continous. Â
Anyone able to let their IMac go in sleep mode with Time Machine turned on? It seems like a possible bug with 10.7.3?

Yesterday I used Migration Assistant to recover the contents of a failed MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) from a Time Machine backup to a new MacBook Air (10.7.4). Using the same external disk for backups, I now have a folder for both the old and new machines inÂ
/Volumes/time_machine/Backups.backupdb/Â Â
The instructions hereÂ
[URL]
explain how to reconnect time machine to the old machine's backups. Once I've done this and checked that I can access the old backups, can I simply delete the new machine folder to save space?Â

I need to download some other software made by some small companies or individuals, that is not available on the app store, and is not digitally signed. It is not free (price), and is not open source (so I cannot determine all the things it does). If I install the software in a different user account on my mac, will the software still be able to access files in any of my other user accounts ?To install the software it asks for the administrator password.
The software is widely used within a niche market, and so far no one has reported any complaints. But at the same time it is a niche market, and if there is a practice I can follow to safely use this software and not compromise my mac, then I would like to do that.

I have a MacBook Air and a Time Capsule - both from november 2011.Using Time Machine is givning me som problems. It works fine for some days, an is backing up as planned. But at least 5 times since I got the Time Capsule, Time Machine is asking to make a full Backup, and when I look in Time Machine, it says that there is no "old backup". It has been runing since november 2011.When I start a new backup, as it ask for, it takes at least 24 hours to finish - some times even longer. Is this normal? If not, what do I do?

One Time Capsule at home
One Time Capsule in vacation homeÂ
MBP backs up everything on internal hard drive to Time Capsule at home, where we live during summer and spring. When moving to vacation home in fall and winter, MBP backs up everything to Time Capsule in vacation home.Â
During the 6 months at each residence, the backups work great to the Time Capsule at that particular house. However, after some time (maybe a week?), Time Machine displays an error in Notification Center: "Time Machine can't complete backup to Home Time Capsule" (when in vacation home) or "Time Machine can't complete backup to Vacation Time Capsule" (when at home).Â
It's obvious that this occurs because Time Machine was set to back up to 2 Time Capsules and expects both of them to be reachable. Is there a way to suppress these Time Machine errors for the time that we're away from one of the Time Capsules?

I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

Lion 10.7.3 on a new mac mini. I learned about the Flashback trojan virus, I disabled Java in Safari preferences as per tech articles, I have all the updates including the Flashback removal tool. I go to NPR.org to listen to some audio podcasts as well as other news articles and I get a notice "You need to install Adobe Flash Player v.8 to view item." My understanding is Java is needed for me to use Adobe Flash Player using Safari on my new mac mini Will I ever be able to view these numerous sites requiring Adobe Flash safely with my new Apple computer?

I have updated to 10.7.4, and now Time Machine does not work on my Time Capsule. I have erased all backups using the Airport Utility. When I try to run Time Machine, the disk is mounted, files are calculated, backup starts, then stops, and no backup is done. Also, no error messages.Â

have a MacBook Pro 15" 10.7.4 which isn't working with TimeMachine any more When starting a backup, Time Machine tells me to backup 112kB (for example) .... an running and running, and after a short time "2kB from 112kB" ... and runnig and running and then "5kb from 112kB" and so on. The progress status is updating very slowly.Â
The weired thing is: the ".inProgress" file on the external hard drive (tried FireWire and USB connection) is growing to 85GB (the total used space on the hard drive) while Time machine status tells me it has saved some kB. And every backup is running in that way. Instead of backing up only the difference, all files where backuped - although the status is displaying a few 100kB - which should be the right size to backup.Â
- Repaired permissions > Same error
- Tried installing combo update > Same error
- Tried another external hard drive > Same error
- Tried cloning system to different hd > Same error
- excluded the Users home folder > Same error
- Interal hard drive speed > Over 70MB/s > OK
- External hard drive speed > Over 70 MB/s > OKÂ
So had to be something with the System itself.

I want to only receive new email either once per hour or better still manually (once or twice during the day at a time chosen by me). That way I won't be bombarded with emails all day and can get on with my work.Â
So, I set the 'check for new messages' to 'manually'. Nevertheless I get email coming in frequently. Possibly every time I send an email, it also checks for new incoming mail (I'm not sure but that's my hunch).Â
How can I stop Mail from pulling in my new incoming email? Any answers to this? If I can't figure this out or it's not possible in Apple Mail, it might be time to switch (but I don't want to!)Â

Given the disaster with Lion 10.7.3 and how it writes passwords in plaintext to secure.log I have migrated to FileVault 2. Now I want to securely delete the secure.log file. With the finder I can delete a file and empty the trash securely. But is there a way to remove files securely from the command line?

I am running a Intel Imac 2008 clean install SL then Lion upgrade, followed by Lion Server install.I have multiple home macs, and intnded the server as a way to monitor and restrict kids internet use.In short, it has changes/screwed up multiple programs, and complicated home sharing issues considerably. Mail on the server machine has permission problems (cannot send mail, unable to sign), Spotlight in mail is non-functioning, finder spotlight searches are inconsistent, etc.I want to revert to plain old Lion.
I have done disk utility/verify disk and verified/repaired permissions, and have 'fiddled' (i'm not an expert) in the keychain/certificates areas, but I think the best solution is a clean install of Lion. When I backup to TIme Machine, is there a way to pull a 'Lion' version of my disk image back, and just not upgrade to Server? I understand I can disable Server and turn off applications in Server, but it doesn't fix my buggy machine. My options are to back up my 250GB of music, 100GB of photos, 100GB of movies, etc on to external drives, and clean install and then reimport everything, but even that will probably mean I cant reinstall my single user licesnse of MS office, VMware fusion, etc that I didn't buy on the App store.
