OS X V10.7 Lion :: Run An External 10.5 PPC HD On An Intel 10.7 Machine?
May 7, 2012
I am moving from a G5 PPC, OS 10.5 Mac, to an Intel OS 10.7 (Lion) computer. There are apps on the G5 that I would like to continue to access and use (Applewqorks, Quicken etc.).
I BU the G5 to an external HD in a clone configuration via SuperDuper.
After the move to the new computer, is it possible to connect the G5 clone external HD to the new Intel Lion computer and start from and run the clone via the Intel machine.

I have a 2009 imac with snow leopard. I want to set up my time machine with an external USB or Firewire hard drive, but I'm not sure which would be better or less costly. Need some advice on which brands would be best. I have a My Book on USB right now, but as it's configured for both Mac and Windows files (I use Parallels) I cannot use it for Time Machine. Also, I've been reading that rebooting through Time Machine could take a long time, but if i could partition the new drive and make some of it a reboot disk alone, that would be faster. I don't know how to do that, or which external drive to get that would work best for that arrangement.

I need to deploy multi iMac for my company with exact same setup.I am able to do this with the Time Machine without problem. But I would like to know is there a way to backup the "Time Machine" USB HDD I have created, just incase my USB HDD is corrupted or I need to distribut the Time Machines to other office for deployment? Can I create a dmg file with my existing Time Machine USB HDD. so that I can make multi copy of USB HDD with the same dmg by restoring the dmg?

I have an iMac and send all my Time Machine backups to an Iomega 250gb external hard drive. Now Time Machine says the drive is full and cannot complete the back up- how can I delete some old back ups to make room for the latest one? And once I have room- restrict it to back up only once a week? I really want to use the drive for the music and photos- but fear not having a complete backup before i update to Mt. Lion.

2012 iMac running 10.7.4 (lion). I have an external hard drive that I use for Time Machine. It has been working fine. Today, I turned it on to run Time Machine and the computer does not see the hard drive. I used a different cord to connect it. Still did not work. I tested both cords with a different external drive and they worked. So it is not the cords. The hard drive is getting power from its separate power cord. The hard drive knows when it is hooked up because the motor in the hard drive revs up when I plug it into the computer. However, the computer does not see it on the desktop or in finder.

I have two external drives daisy-chained to my iMac for Time Machine,Superduper bootable back-up and a further Superduper back-up of my old Snow Leopard drive. Since upgrading from 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 I get an irritating message each time I awake the computer from sleep that another computer is using my network and the computer name has to be changed. Changing the name as advised in Sharing of System Preferences does not solve the problem. Only disconnecting the external drives makes the warning go away but this is self defeating since I then cannot use Time Machine and/or Superduper.

Is it possible to convert the backups.backupdb folder on an external HD I've been using for Time Machine into a regular folder? Or to otherwise move around and delete files within the backups.backupdb folder on the Time Machine HD? My old Macbook Pro was stolen and I got a new MacBook Air. I had full Time Machine backups of my MacBook Pro on an external HD. I restored the majority of the data to my new Air, but I want to leave my iTunes music on the external HD in a separate folder or partition. Unfortunately, to do this, I need to move (rather than copy) the Music folder. I can't seem to move folders around on the HD; instead, I get a message saying "The operation cannot be completed because backup items cannot be modified." I've seen a few solutions but they haven't seemed to work--I tried something in Terminal, logging in as a root user, etc. Note that I cannot enter Time Machine to turn off backups for the Music folder, because the Music folder that was being backed up was on the stolen computer.Â

I have a new iMac OS 10.7.3Â I am using a SeaGate 1.5 TB external HD for backup.Â
If I leave the computer on continous everything works fine. It backs up every hour. It has been running fine for over a week. If I set the iMac in energy saver mode, say 10 minutes, when the iMac comes out of sleep mode there is a warning that Time Machine failed.Â
I get the following errors messages:Â "Time Machine could not complete the Backup" "Error while creating the Backup Folder"Â
There is no way to correct it or retry. I have to run disk utility and erase the external HD, re-format, then back everything again.Â
I would prefer to use the energy save feature of the iMac if I could. I tried the Apple Support number and they just said leave the iMac in "energy saver NEVER" so the iMac stays on continous. Â
Anyone able to let their IMac go in sleep mode with Time Machine turned on? It seems like a possible bug with 10.7.3?

I've recently starting having problems with my external HD that I use for my Time Machine backups. I'm not able to repair the drive using Disk Elements, so I want to copy some of my backups stored therein onto my Mac HD before I try reformatting the external HD. However, I get the error message "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup" when I try dragging the backup folders onto my desktop. Is there any way to salvage the backups before I try reformatting? Â

Most of whats on there is old backups from the past year & 1/2 that I have no use for anymore. is there a way to delete all of the backups that are on there right now without deleting the other files I've put on there. I have a bunch of projects and files on there that I cant put anywhere else and just format the drive. Basically, i need a way to delete all of my time machine backups off my external hd without deleting all my other files on there.

A series of backup related problems have occurred: Upgraded to Lion and then TM failed to backup: "Error while copying to backup disk" (using Lacie d2 Quadra HD that has been performing well for 2 years). I also have a second Iomega MiniMaxHD with a carbon copy clone of my Snow Leopard mac on one partition and a second partition with other iphoto/.itunes/ document backup and now I cannot copy my iphoto library to this HD for a backup: " Operation could not be completed because the item "iphoto Library" is in use", even though all applications are off.
Tried multiple times and the transfer of the iphoto library always fails midway through. I have lost both my TM backup and my ability to backup to other drives because a new problem has arisen: every time I try to load an external HD I can't eject it: can't eject because error message says that the "Finder is using" the external HD and then I have to Force Eject, risking data loss.
I have so far tried: restart mac, reset PRAM, unplug/verify and repair disk multiple times for all of the external HDs as well as my Macintosh HD; I have erased the Lacie HD and reformatted it while rebooting from Lion Recovery HD and then TM still failed; I have also tried deleting from the Library my TM plist as well as my iphoto p.list. I even tried using a brand new Iomega Minimax HD and TM still failed
I have Lion 10.7.4, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM

I am running a Intel Imac 2008 clean install SL then Lion upgrade, followed by Lion Server install.I have multiple home macs, and intnded the server as a way to monitor and restrict kids internet use.In short, it has changes/screwed up multiple programs, and complicated home sharing issues considerably. Mail on the server machine has permission problems (cannot send mail, unable to sign), Spotlight in mail is non-functioning, finder spotlight searches are inconsistent, etc.I want to revert to plain old Lion.
I have done disk utility/verify disk and verified/repaired permissions, and have 'fiddled' (i'm not an expert) in the keychain/certificates areas, but I think the best solution is a clean install of Lion. When I backup to TIme Machine, is there a way to pull a 'Lion' version of my disk image back, and just not upgrade to Server? I understand I can disable Server and turn off applications in Server, but it doesn't fix my buggy machine. My options are to back up my 250GB of music, 100GB of photos, 100GB of movies, etc on to external drives, and clean install and then reimport everything, but even that will probably mean I cant reinstall my single user licesnse of MS office, VMware fusion, etc that I didn't buy on the App store.

Using Migration Assistant, I'm trying to transfer back-up files (whole system) from my Western Digital, External HDD to a new-to-me iMac which I've just purchased used. The External HDD has all my files (hopefully!) from my recently stolen iMac. As you can imagine, the circumstances are a bit unexpected and unsettling.
I've followed Apple's instructions for using MA with an external drive, but get hung up like others before me when it comes time for my new (used) computer to locate the disc from which to transfer the files. I've read the replies to others who have posted with similar difficulties using Snow Leopard, but resolving the issue seems to be just out of reach. Â
Original computer is now unavailable (stolen); it last ran on Snow Leopard, 10.6.3 to 6.8.New computer is used, and also runs on 10.6.8.Both computers are iMac 2009, tho slightly different versions, if that has any bearing on things.I created a temporary account on my new-to-me computer to make the data transfer, so that there wouldn't be an accounts conflict, as others have suggested.Western Digital External HDD, "My Book, Studio Edition," 1TB. I'm using the FireWire 800 port on the iMac. If I need to erase the hard drive on my "new" computer, I'll need a little instruction and hand-holding on that one.Â

I am trying to get Time Machine to backup my external hard drive. I have the external drive formated as Mac OS Extended (journaled) and I have also removed the drive from the Excluded list.I put some 'test' files on the external drive and told TM to do a backup and when it is finished the only way I can see my external hard drive in TM is if it is connected to the computer. It doesn't seem to be backed up anywhere in TM that I can see.

Mac Mini running 10.8.5. Time Machine will not back up brand new OWC MiniStack external HD. I've trashed TM prefs, reformatted the TM drive, verified that there are no exclusions, but it won't back up the external HD which contains only data files -- no system, no applications. TM does back up the internal HD.

I was using an external drive for Time Machine for the past year and a few months On Saturday a message came up that it failed. I tried initiating the Time Machine again but failed. I decided to get a new bigger external drive to use for Time Machine. When trying to eject the external drive I was using it gives me this message:
Would it be safe just to force eject or log out and then log back in again to eject it so I can use my new external drive?
