OS X V10.7 Lion :: EFI-Update For Late 2008 Does Not Work
Mar 3, 2012
problems with the EFI-Update for MBP, late 2008. It does not work at all, I've retried this several times and my Laptop just gets a grey Background, the bar at the top stays, I can move the mouse and click on the "apple" - but that's it. To get my Laptop back to life I had to hold the powerbutton and restart. The same happens now when I just want to shutdown my Laptop, grey background etc.

I bought an oldish MacBook 13' Unibody (late 2008) and when I got it one of the first things I did was to install Mac OSX Lion.
Everything was working fine, until I applied an update that made the trackpad stop working (it only accepts clicks, no touch is recognized).
This is the "Trackpad Firmware Update" from the automatic updates.
When starting this firmware update it appears a window with a status message, cancel and Update buttons. After clicking the update button, it starts installing, appears to complete, status changes to "Finishing...", and Update button comes back active at some point.
After that I have tried (unsuccessfully):downloading and installing the update directly from Apple Support [URL] thing, but using the 'root' accountleaving the computer on overnight to see if actually "finished" the processReset PRAM PVRAM - [URL] - [URL] palm pressing over 30 seconds on the trackpad (read this on another thread...?)

Is there really a "Late 2008" model? If so, what is the difference.I ask because I recently got a MacPro and according to Apple's hardware test, it is an Early 2008.

Installed the update and what wasn't a problem is now a problem. The computer will not connect to wifi without me telling it to after coming out of sleep. Was not an issue with 10.7.2.

Started the 10.7.4 install, and it halted. Turned my Mac off, started it back up, and apparently the 10.7.4 update didn't install, but it has caused the Mail function to not work AT ALL - I get a long error report that is auto sent to Apple.
I downloaded Lion from the Apple store, but have my Snow Leopard disk. How do I go about re-installing Mail?

I've currently got a macbook pro which currently has 4Gb ram and I want to know if it can be upgraded to 8Gb. [URL] Mode A1621, Boot Rom MB41.00C1.B03 I've read a number of postings which indicate 4GB is the official supported amount by Apple, 6Gb will work (unofficially) and this posting [URL] indicates some late 2008s can be upgraded to 8gb after a EFI update.. however mine comes up as a MacBook pro 4,1 not 5.1 (shame).
- Am I on the latest EFI/Boot Rom? Can I simply install the latest and it will
- Can this machine with the latest boot rom/snow lepoard run to 8Gb ram?

I had always read that the max. ram I could install on the Macbook 13inch late 2008 model, model 5,1, 2.4 Ghz, boot rom version MB51.007D.803, SMC Version 1.32f8, was 4GB of ram. I received an add from "Other World Computing" stating that I can install 8Gb to this model. I am running Lion and do a lot of photography so the idea of increasing ram is interesting. However, I don't want to waste my money.

MacBook Pro started giving me terrible glitches, Where 1) Applications will quit unexpectedly and 2) I will get the gray cover over the screen with text saying I need to restart my computer.
This is happening quite often and I would really like it to stop..
I noticed it all started happening after I installed ProTools LE.
I've already erased my internal hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard, then put my necessary files back.
I have also upgraded my RAM and HDD, about 3 months ago and it's been working flawless until I installed ProTools LE.

My macbook late 2008 unibody has been a wonderfull companion for the last 2 years but the time has come to give it a slight upgrade.
I'm thinking about upgrading my hard drive.
the need to use parallels and an ever growing photo library are stressing the limits of my current 160GB hard drive.

I am about to upgrade my late 2008 aluminum MacBook 2.4 Ghz to 6GB of ram from owc but wanted to know if the will support 8GB, running at full stability. From what I can tell from other threads is that the owc 8GB kit doesn't work is this correct? If it can handle 8GB of ram I will do that instead of 6GB.

I'm thinking about upgrading to a SSD but wanted to know if my MacBook (see sig) had a Serial ATA speed of 3 Gigabit or 1.5. The System Profiler says :
Vendor:NVidia
Product:MCP79 AHCI
Link Speed:3 Gigabit
Negotiated Link Speed:1.5 Gigabit
Description:AHCI Version 1.20 Supported
under Serial-ATA. So I'm not sure if that means the the port is a 3 Gigabit port but the HD is only 1.5. Does that mean the SATA cable is a 1.5 Gigabit speed, and I'd need a new cable, or what? Also if it is 3 Gigabit port that means it's SATA II, right?

Ok, so I just received my early Xmas present(s) from my work... (Got a whole bunch of Mac goodies).
On to my question, I have my 24" ACD sitting in my office, and my 2008 Macbook, I want to know if there is a way to connect the ACD to the Macbook. It's not the most important thing in the world, because I'm getting my 17" MBP in Oct., but until then, I would like to use the ACD with my Macbook if possible.

The cursor stops responding for up to minute (without changing to a "beach ball"), lots of "beach balls", delays in typing/deleting, even delays when using arrows. Restarting helped (though it didn't shut down properly), but the problem is back. I'm on 10.7.3, using Safari, but the problem is across apps. I have very little else open at the same time.

My gf's late 2008 MacBook ist annoyingly slow. I have 8 tabs open in Safari and when going back and forth between those tabs it gives me the spinning beachball for like 30 seconds. Sometimes it even reloads the whole tab which takes even more time. The whole time I hear the hdd working hard, it's clicking all the time though there are no unsual sounds that would indicate harddrive failure.
I checked disk utility it says S.M.A.R.T. is verified. I even used another program (don't remember the name right now) to get a more detailed description of the hdd status, progam says everything's fine. I checked the memory both with the tools provided by Apple and memtest, both say everything is great. So I asked some Apple Service person what the problem might be, he said if SMART's okay than it's probably the hdd-cable - repair would cost me (or my girlfriend in this case) 60 bucks. Before I shell out the cash I want to double check and see if I can repair the computer myself. My plan is to connect the hdd via usb to see if it's still that slow, but of course the speed of usb itself is limited, so I'm not sure if this is a good idea.

Long story short, I've got dust and maybe even a bubble inside the glass of my Late 08 MBP. Is it possible for techs to just remove the glass to clean/check the screen without damaging anything or will I end up needing to get the display replaced?

I sent in my macbook pro 15" about 2 weeks ago to have its logic board replaced because of screen flickering. A couple days after I got it back, it started giving me 3 beeps on startup. I finally was able to get it started somehow and its been running fine untill today. It started giving me the 3 beeps again. I know this means there is something wrong with the ram. I opened it up and switch the RAM and it started. I went away for a couple minutes and when I came back there was a message saying that I had to shut it down holding the power button. When I tried booting it back up again, the beeps came back.

This has been a problem with my macbook for some time now, but It's never been enough to get in the way. Lately it's getting even worse.
When playing games, or doing anything remotely graphical (has happened while using iTunes visualizer), my macbook can just freeze. Very rarely I get the kernal panic grey window, but most of the time it just hangs, repeating the last half a second of audio. Using VMware (not playing games, just windows programs) can also freeze it.
I have the 2.3GhZ Model, while my friend has the 2.0GhZ model, and he does not have a problem. I don't think his has ever frozen. Yesterday mine froze twice within an hour, while his just happy kept running.
I've googled this problem and I can't find anything. I want to see if you forumers know something before I call Apple Support as I'd rather know whats going on before that.
I have:
2.33GhZ, 2GB RAM, NVidia 9400M, 250GB Hard Drive (Happened when it was barely full, and close to full). I'm running OSX Leopard 10.5.7, but this has happened on all version since I bought it (10.5.5)
