May 25, 2012I had been using Time Machine successfully for a while now but I am going traveling and thought I better encrypt my backup just in case it get's lost or stolen. I turned on encryption and chose a password, I don't really know if it completed the process as I was away from my computer, I susepct it failed, what I do know is every-time I plug the drive in I get the popup FileVault window and once I put my password in and select unlock it just goes grey, it's not saying it's incorrect just nothing happens and the drive does not mount.Â
I can see the drive in Disk Utility but if I select it I get the spinning beach-ball. I'm afraid encryption has destroyed my new 2TB drive (less than a month old). I don't really want to attempt to erase the drive as it contains other data that is not back of the Time Machine backup. I'm running 10.7.4. What can I do to get the drive mounted?

May 27, 2012I am using 10.6.8 but I created a Lion partition on the same disk. I am trying out Lion and I do not want Time Machine to back it up. I was able to exclude the Lion volume until I encrypted the Lion partition using Filevault 2. Now when I'm using Snow Leopard, there doesn't seem to be a way of preventing Time Machine from backing up the Lion partition.

Jul 5, 2012I had used FileVault 2 on the entire drive and had later deleted all contents. After changing my mind, I used SoftTote Data recovery for mac to retrieve the deleted files. So now I have a bunch of reconstructed .dbf files and such, but I don't know how to access them. Any better way to retrieve the data I regretted deleting?

Mar 9, 2012I cannot enter the time machine when I press the time machine icon. I press and nothing happens, so I'm not sure even if it is backing up at this point. When i go to my Tme Capsule it has the folder there for back-ups and the most recent, but no access from the icon.

Mar 11, 2012I have a MacBook Air and a Time Capsule - both from november 2011.Using Time Machine is givning me som problems.It works fine for some days, an is backing up as planned.But at least 5 times since I got the Time Capsule, Time Machine is asking to make a full Backup, and when I look in Time Machine, it says that there is no "old backup". It has been runing since november 2011.When I start a new backup, as it ask for, it takes at least 24 hours to finish - some times even longer.Is this normal? If not, what do I do?

MBP backs up everything on internal hard drive to Time Capsule at home, where we live during summer and spring. When moving to vacation home in fall and winter, MBP backs up everything to Time Capsule in vacation home.Â
During the 6 months at each residence, the backups work great to the Time Capsule at that particular house. However, after some time (maybe a week?), Time Machine displays an error in Notification Center: "Time Machine can't complete backup to Home Time Capsule" (when in vacation home) or "Time Machine can't complete backup to Vacation Time Capsule" (when at home).Â
It's obvious that this occurs because Time Machine was set to back up to 2 Time Capsules and expects both of them to be reachable. Is there a way to suppress these Time Machine errors for the time that we're away from one of the Time Capsules?

Jul 2, 2012I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

Jun 25, 2012have a MacBook Pro 15" 10.7.4 which isn't working with TimeMachine any more When starting a backup, Time Machine tells me to backup 112kB (for example) .... an running and running, and after a short time "2kB from 112kB" ... and runnig and running and then "5kb from 112kB" and so on. The progress status is updating very slowly.Â
The weired thing is: the ".inProgress" file on the external hard drive (tried FireWire and USB connection) is growing to 85GB (the total used space on the hard drive) while Time machine status tells me it has saved some kB. And every backup is running in that way. Instead of backing up only the difference, all files where backuped - although the status is displaying a few 100kB - which should be the right size to backup.Â
- Repaired permissions > Same error
- Tried installing combo update > Same error
- Tried another external hard drive > Same error
- Tried cloning system to different hd > Same error
- excluded the Users home folder > Same error
- Interal hard drive speed > Over 70MB/s > OK
- External hard drive speed > Over 70 MB/s > OKÂ
So had to be something with the System itself.

May 3, 2012I am running a Intel Imac 2008 clean install SL then Lion upgrade, followed by Lion Server install.I have multiple home macs, and intnded the server as a way to monitor and restrict kids internet use.In short, it has changes/screwed up multiple programs, and complicated home sharing issues considerably. Mail on the server machine has permission problems (cannot send mail, unable to sign), Spotlight in mail is non-functioning, finder spotlight searches are inconsistent, etc.I want to revert to plain old Lion.
I have done disk utility/verify disk and verified/repaired permissions, and have 'fiddled' (i'm not an expert) in the keychain/certificates areas, but I think the best solution is a clean install of Lion. When I backup to TIme Machine, is there a way to pull a 'Lion' version of my disk image back, and just not upgrade to Server? I understand I can disable Server and turn off applications in Server, but it doesn't fix my buggy machine. My options are to back up my 250GB of music, 100GB of photos, 100GB of movies, etc on to external drives, and clean install and then reimport everything, but even that will probably mean I cant reinstall my single user licesnse of MS office, VMware fusion, etc that I didn't buy on the App store.

May 9, 2012I decided not to use just one partition with my disk because i wanted to separte important documents from the OS and apps so reformated my disk with 2 partitions 1 for OS and apps and one for docs. I also wanted to keep the docs partition secure so it was my intention to use filevault... however it learned that file vault would only work on my whole disk and not on a sigle volume. At least thats the only option i get when i go to "Turn on FileVault" in the Security and Privacy of system preferences. So what i tried next was to reformat the "docs" partition i have created using the Mac OS extended (journaled) encrypted option. This option seemed to work but after formating the partition, I could not mount the volume.
Question is: what is the best way for what i am trying to do and how to do it.
a) is there a way to use FileVault on a single volume instead of the whle disk?
b) alternatively, how to format an encrypted partition and mount it?

Apr 1, 2012Today i formatted my entire disk, but made it Journaled, Encrypted. It installed (actually "downloaded aditional files"), and then booted with a cross/do not proceed sign. I booted from the install disk again, got an error telling me to reinstall OS X. I was never asked for my password, and when i started disk utility, the disk was locked.

Apr 20, 2012I had a necessity to install from an encrypted Hard drive using the Lion USB Boot Drive. When I attempted to restore from the drive, I was unable to do so.
After finally completing a complete install of Lion, I was able to use Migration assistant. But I still had to reinstall and reconfigure several things necessary to my business.Â
Is this a shortcoming of a reconstruction process or is there something I should have done?

Jun 28, 2014I have an external WD MyPassport HD that works well. I encrypted it and used it as my Time Machine backup disk for the past year.Â
Enter Mavericks. After a system failure a few days after Mavericks installation, I found a large iNode file in my root lost+found folder. The iNode is nothing special, simply a .pkg of the Mavericks installer. However, ever since that file appeared, my system refuses to acknowledge my password for the external HD. I know the password, it hasn't changed. But the password entry window does that wiggle thing whenever I enter the password. No, caps lock is not on.Â
So. I restarted in Safe Mode. Now, Mavericks recognizes the password for my external! Ain't that something? I would love to know why it doesn't recognize it in Normal boot mode.Â
But I still have a problem. Of course, it logically follows that I should decrypt my drive, erase Mavericks, and reinstall. Because, you know, I'm afraid of forever losing access to that drive if I reinstall OS 10.8 or even venture for 10.9 again, and the drive is still unreadable.Â
All of my backups are on that external disk, and while Safe Boot will READ the disk, IT WON'T DECRYPT IT! Does this have anything to do with indexing? Because another problem I'm having is Spotlight doesn't really work since I installed Mavericks either.

Feb 14, 2012I keep several encrypted disk images in the Dropbox folder on my laptop. Can I use File Vault to encrypt the laptop when it contains these already encrypted .dmg and .sparsebundle files? Or will this double encryption harm them? Â
(These folders need to be individually encrypted to reside in an encrypted form on the Dropbox server. If I unencrypt them and use only File Vault, then when I'm on the computer and File Vault is off, the folders will sync to Dropbox in their unencrypted form. I want to keep these folders individually encrypted for security on the Dropbox server, then use FIle Vault on top of that to secure the rest of my laptop in case of theft).

Feb 17, 2012If I encrypt an external drive using File Vault 2 (Lion 10.7.3) as a Time Machine backup from my current laptop, then later purchase a new laptop and attempt to read that encrypted backup, will there be any problems to consider? Â
1) I expect that, since the password will be stored on my current laptop, there would be a problem reading the password on a new laptop Â
2) I was told that opening a File Vault 2Â encrypted external drive would require the same laptop, as the encryption creates a match of serial numbers between the laptop and the encrypted drive.Â
