By the time OS X displays the startup disk full message, you computer is already useless. Is there a way to get this warning at 5GB free space?

I see a lot of people suggesting that perhaps because the poster had less than 10gb (which is my case as well-- I have around 8), that this is why this message is happening. Well, my response to that is:
1)I have had around 8gb free for months, and these messages only started appearing in the last week. Each time I go "???" and look at my finder to see 8.4gb free or whatever, and I am like "WHY ARE YOU TELLING ME I AM OUT OF SPACE?
2)in the terminal, I was trying to download a few 20-30mb files, and wget quit out on me saying "insufficient storage space left on device".and doing "df -h" shows me that I have almost 10% free.. and again this is a 20-30mb, so this is total nonsense.
Are there any suggestions as to what might be causing this and a course of action, other than being told: "copy your files to an external hard drive and delete them on your startup disk".

My wife has an Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook with Leopard 10.5.8. We've run the software update. We've run repair disk permissions. We've restarted the computer. But despite all of that, her virtual memory usage is really high compared to my computer. Each process is using from approximately 600 - 1100 MB of virtual memory. She has 12 GB of free space on her hard drive, but her computer has been running slower lately and has had the low startup disk space warning.

I keep getting this warning that my disk is full, I am unable to download updates and even songs from iTunes. Also in the finder I apparently do not have any files because the my files section is blank. i have cleaned up the download folder and emptied the trash as well as performed a diskrepair. I tried to reinstall the software and was told again that the disk was full....What do I do?

macbook pro blue screen with spinning disk, won't start up. my macbook was really sluggish so i ran a hardware test. it said NO PROBLEMS. i did restart. my current login and password were REJECTED. then the macbook went into blue screen and it just sits there and flashes to gray and back to blue and the white lines that make up the circle icon just spin and spin.

I recently realized that I no longer have the Startup Disk preference pane in the Preference Panel. I sometimes boot from other drives and now I'm forced to hold down the option key at restart or startup instead of being able to select the startup drive through the Startup Disk pane.

I had difficulties booting from my 10.5.8 partition. So I booted from the installation disk started disk utility and repair disk permission. I got results that said: warning, will not be repaired. What should I do? Install one of the latest back ups, or what?

I've suddenly been getting a pop up message that reads "Your startup disk is almost full - you need to make more space available on your start up disk by deleting files"
My hard disk is 320 GB & I've only used 111 GB so far so why is this message popping up & what can I do about it without deleting my precious files?

I'm a fairly naive mac user and got my friend to instal my new harddrive.
It's big, with 320GB.
However, he set up a startupdisk partition, with a size of 20GB, called OSX.
For some reason this is now full and slowing down my MAC which is particularly annoying as I have college essays to submit very soon!
I've checked what is on my startupdisk and it is as follows:
Private 8GB
Applications 5GB
Library 3.5GB
System 2.3GB
I don't understand what this means but I have copied applications, library and system to my HD and tried to delete off startupdisk but it won't let me. say it is require by mac.

I keep getting error messages saying my startup disk is full, so I delete a bunch of things, look in about this Mac, it says I have multiple GB available and then over time they disappear and I get the error message again. earlier today I had 8 GB, they all disappeared, so I deleted a big iphoto album and got a new 13 GB, now 45 minutes later it is down to 10GB....

My MacBook Pro gets a message when I first start up on my log in page. When I then go to log in i just get a blank grey screen. Any clues as to what I can do. I've been downloading quite a lot of TV shows recently from ITunes and was going to move them to a external HD but I cant see anything.Â

Something is going bad with my computer. Recently I have been getting the startup disk is almost full, but it is not. I have over a gig left and have tossed a bunch of stuff. I feel it was an email or something that was downloaded that is causing it to eat up all the memory. I have also done the Disk Utility and fixed it a couple times in a row. what is happening or what I can do to put my finger on it?Â
