OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Excluding Folders From Time Machine And Restoring The System?

For my back up strategy I use chronosync to backup my movies and music to my time capsule so I can access them from any device. I still use Time Machine, but I then exclude those same folders as I don't need them twice.Â
Will I still be able to restore my system from my TM backup? If I had to restore my system but didn't use the backup ie a clean install, could I access folders within the backup from the new install?Â

I changed my HD in my MacBook Pro to a bigger one and then wanted to Restore the System via Time Machine onto that new HD. Sadly I dont have the Snow Leopard DVD that was coming with the MacBook. Though I have another Snow Leopard DVD, that I purchased earlier for my older Mac. Now the Problem:When I try to Boot the Macbook Pro from the older Snow Leopard DVD it always freezes and says: "You have to restart your Macbook. Press the power button until it switches off and then press the button again". But iwill not boot from the DVD.Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?

In my Mac Pro I've OSX 10.6 on my boot drive in Bay 1. Bay 2-4 do also contain hd's with loads of data. When putting a new drive in bay 1 and restoring from Time Machine - is it possible to only restore data from hd at bay 1? If yes, how?Â

My Macbook has not been running very stable and I decided to restore from a backup via Time Machine. My problem is my install disks are Leopard (10.5) and my backups are from Snow Leopard (10.6). I installed Snow Leopard from an Upgrade disk which I don't still have.
I have no luck restoring the Snow Leopard backups. My question is, how would I recover these backups without the Snow Leopard install disk? Is it possible or do I need to do a fresh install, upgrade then enter time machine via the OS itself?

I set up time machine to back up my computers hard drive and additionally to back up another external drive that is attached. however, it only is backing up one folder in my other external drive and nothing else.

I have never set up Time Machine on my Macbook Pro.I have several Mailbox's or Folders inside my email system or Mac Mail.I wanted to clear some of the less used folders out and so I exported them to another folder on my desktop.Then I deleted the folders or Mailbox's from inside the Email system or Mac Mail.When I went to the folder on the desktop to see the exported emails, there was nothing you could read, it was all jibberish or crazy characters. What did I do wrong and how can I retrieve those important saved emails?

I've just got a new MBP13 yesterday and was too engrossed in putting every documents and installing every programs that I have into my new MBP13. Until this morning, I just realized that I am hit by this pretty common issue of having a 'wobbly' MBP. Its like, it doesn't seat flat on the flat surface. I've tried a few surfaces from wooden table to glass tops, its still the same.
So, I've called Apple after sales and they are kind enough to do a 1 to 1 replacement, but I have to wait for 4 days without my MBP for them to turn it around. Seems abit long for me to be frank, but AppleCare starts afresh. Alright, long story aside, as I am too lazy to reinstall and putting all my important documents back to the even newer MBP13 that is coming, is it possible for me to do a Time Machine backup from here, then just restore everything to the new MBP13 without any problems? Specs wise its 100% the same.

I use Bootcamp occasionally for some software that is not available on a Mac as well as MS Office, but unfortunately, I had the partition set to 150 Gb when I set it up which is way too much. I don't want to reformat etc. to reduce the size so just recently, I decided to use that partition for my iTunes folder plus Gb's of work documents which suits me just fine.Â
I have Time Machine setup to backup my Mac and whereas before I had Bootcamp excluded, I am now trying to have the settings so that all of Bootcamp is excluded EXCEPT for 2 folders - iTunes and Personal. I can't see a way to do this because since I have Bootcamp excluded, the subfolders are non-selectable. I tried one way where instead of selecting all of Bootcamp, I did a CMD-A and selected all with an idea of deselecting folders, but even this way, I am unable to deselect the 2 folders because all folders are greyed out.Â
So the question is - Is it possible to exclude Bootcamp and at the same time to de-exclude the 2 folders? If not, I suppose my option would be to backup (well, actually copy!) the 2 folders to my TM drive.Â

My MBPro is getting cranky in a number of ways that indicate a reinstall of Snow Leopard is in order. After the requisite disk first aid check I attempted to run the installer only to get a dialog box telling me that the system cannot be installed because this disk is used by time machine. The MacBook disk is of course a source for back ups but not a back up drive. Even after restarting and explicitly turning off Time machine I get the same results.What do I need to set to allow the installer to run. The installer cd is a stand alone snow leopard install cd, not a machine specific cd.

i'm planning to format my mac book pro, as in, reinstalling leopard and erasing all the files and applications since my mac is getting really slow. I was wondering if the applications ( adobe photoshop, illustrator, final cut etc.) that i backed-up in my time machine will still work on a formatted mac.

I am trying to restore my Address Book contacts all but one of which vanished a couple days ago - but when I look at it in Time Machine it reads "last update 5/11/12" even as far back as Sep 2011. I've checked other files and TM has saved the correct older versions.

I had to restore my system due to the Trojan virus and seem to be up and running. The only problem I still have is not being able to restore my itunes to the last playlist. I keep getting the list I loaded in May of 2011 when I put this computer in service. Where I can find the list I had before dumping and reloading?

I just replaced my HD on my 15"MBP. The install went well until restoring my data from Time Machine. The apps came over fine but none of my data did. Yes, I checked all the boxes on the "restore from backup" menu.
Of course now when I start up time machine the backup isn't there. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the backup? I have it on two places - a time capsule and a separate external HD.

I cannot seem to set up Time Machine using Time Capsule on my MacBook Pro. Evidently when I initially set up AirPort Extreme, I failed to select it as the backup disc.

I upgraded my old PBG4 to a new MBP yesterday. On my PBG4 I have an external drive with Time Machine backup. I noticed in setting up the new machine that I could migrate old user data to the new mac, and one of the options was via a Time Machine disk. Does this work, even if you're going between machines?
The old computer is a PowerPC laptop and the new one is Intel. Are there differences in things like drivers and stuff or would all the data and settings transfer over no problems? I always figured that the restore from Time Machine was to restore a backup onto the same machine (i.e. recover from a crash or OS corruption) but don't know if it works from going between an old machine and a new one?

I'm running on an iMac and my system recently crashed. I went through the whole process of trying to reboot in Safe mode, then running Disk Utility, then 'fsck'. Looks like my drive should work, but it still freezes upon startup.
So. My last option is to reinstall OS X from my install disk. Not a big deal since I've been running Time Machine backups on an external drive. Here's the problem: my install disk is 10.4.10 but my backups are from Leopard. I upgraded to Leopard online without purchasing a disk.
Is there any way to do a full system restore from my Time Machine backup without the 10.5 disk?
Can I reinstall 10.4, then upgrade to Leopard (or Snow Leopard), and then run my full restore? Would I then need to clone my system to a separate drive before restoring to my internal drive?

I only own one Mac computer - a MacBook Pro. I use Time Machine to back it up. If I had to send the laptop in for service I would be without my data for possibly quite some time. So I'm wondering - if I owned a second Mac (maybe an iMac), could I plug in my Time Machine drive and access the data? Could I selectively restore files and folders to the iMac?

Today, I bought a 500gb Western Digital 5400rpm hard drive to replace the 160gb hard drive in my MacBook (a late 2008 2.0ghz unibody macbook). My MacBook has Snow Leopard 10.6.2. on it btw. I took the new hard drive, placed it in an enclosure and formatted it to Mac OS Extended (journaled), and turned off and replaced the old drive with the new one. I then took the disk that came with my mac, inserted it, and chose to restore from Time Machine to copy it to my bigger hard drive. It finished and, as the computer restarted I got this error, which an Apple rep. told me was a "Kernel Panic" or something along the lines of that.
He told me to try clean installing Leopard onto the new HDD to see if it would work. I did and, sure enough, it worked, When I chose though to restore my files from Time Machine when it finished, it said that "Time Machine could not restore the files because the version of OS X on the Time Machine disc is different than Leopard 10.5." Thus, to work around this, I installed Snow Leopard (the $29 upgrade) and it booted into SL fine. It is a clean version of Snow Leopard and I cannot get my Mac restored how it was.
Migration Assistant will only move files but my computer was very personalized and I want to restore it from Time Machine. Apparently though, the only way to do that is through the original disk that came with the machine and I cannot do that as it won't recognize the fact the the Time Machine backup is of an Snow Leopard MacBook and the software to re-install OS X is for Leopard only. What can I do to restore from Time Machine now?

I have a Feb 2008 MBP which died and I had some questions about restoring a similar state to a new i5 MBP. I do have the old hard drive (not sure if it works yet) and Time Machine backups.
I was wondering if it is safe to do a complete Time Machine restore because I do not know if any of the files are model specific (and the old laptop does not have the newest version of 10.6.x likely to come on my new MBP). Also, how can I preserve my boot camp partition? Ideally, I would like a slightly bigger boot camp partition on the new laptop, but with an exact clone of the data on the old one. I do know that Time Machine will not restore my Windows partition.

Apple replaced my hard drive and logic board. I tried using my Time Machine to restore everything. It appears as though my internal hard drive is full with my old information that was transferred over from my Time Machine, but I can't seem to access the information. I need to know how to get everything back to where it needs to go. Also, when I go to the internal hard drive and look at things like my ical to see if my calendar is there, the ical is blank. If it was transferred from my Time Machine, shouldn't it be full?Â

My MBA Mid-2011 seems to be running hot and it gets hung up on just about every application I try to use. I am current on all updates and clear of any viruses. I was going to restore but wow what a pain and I was wondering instead of restoring to factory I was going to restore from my back up in Time Machine, but if I were to do that wouldnt I just be restoring the same issue I am currently having?

I wanted a clean install of Lion, so I copied over my iTunes library, saved my Mail as an mbox file, and moved all of my critical files to an external drive. But I completely forgot to save my iPhoto library. I have been running Time Machine for almost a year and I see that I have the file still on my NAS but it says I don't have the permissions to open it up. I can only open Time Machine backups since I reinstalled Lion. I have kept the same machine name and, I believe, username. It did not create a different Time Machine backup--there are still the same three files for the three different computers I am running Time Machine on. Is there any way I can restore my iPhoto library from the old Time Machine backup?Â

possible to back up all your data with Time Machine on Leopard and then install Snow Leopard and use Time Machine to restore all of your pictures/movies/music and the like?
I'm going to assume it's a no go since Time Machine is capable of a full system backup -- it may just turn your system back into Leopard?

I am a little new to Time Machine, so I was wondering if anyone could answer this? I am currently using Time Machine to backup my Mac. I am running Leopard and I want to move to Snow Leopard when it comes out. When i get Snow Leopard, I will perform a reformat on my hard drive so its a nice fresh install. My question is what options will I get when I get when I go to install it as I have Time Machine? I'll be honest and say I'll be happy to just copy across my iTunes, iPhoto, contacts and calender over to Snow Leopard and not worry about anything else (stuff like downloading Firefox takes seconds and isn't a problem). Is this an option? Can i just install Snow Leopard totally fresh, then connect the Time Machine drive and copy the iTunes (etc etc) folders/files/docments over to my fresh install?

I just tried and everything seems non-responsive or on a 2 minute delay. I use Time Capsule and Time Machine and things are just not acceptable at this speed.
Also, I don't think the archives are right. I used to have a ton of things on my desktop - most of which I cleaned recently by moving or deleting the files.
However, going back a few months in Time Machine, the only files that show up in my desktop folder/view are the ones that are on my desktop today. All the older, moved or deleted files no longer show up in Time Machine.
