OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Re-start TextEdit
Feb 13, 2012
I have been happily using TextEdit to write text in Roman and Arabic script for the last few months. Today, without warning, TextEdit quit unexpectedly while I was half-way through writing a document.

I'm running OS 10.6.8, TextEdit v 1.6 (264) and find that documents created in TextEdit and saved with a custom scale (90% for example) and then closed always revert to 100% when opened the next time. The funny thing is when I close the document after changing the scale without saving it prompts me to save the changes, but even then it's not saved. So I'm thinking this behavior isn't normal, TextEdit knows it's supposed to be saving this but for whatever reason it's not. This is more in the category of a nuisance than a problem but I thought I'd post and see if anyone knows anything about this.

I have a very odd problem. Spotlight can't find TextEdit anymore, even if I type the name of the app fully in the field. The app is right where it should be in the Applications folder. It hasn't been excluded from search and I have done a reindex of Spotlight but the problem persists. Other apps come up exactly right.

When I make a start.command file on textedit, it says:The file “start copy.command” could not be executed because you do not have appropriate access privileges. I have pressed "Get Info" but do not know what to do once I am there.

I've installed Snow Leopard but now my mac won't start up. (It's a early 2008 mac pro so it should be able to handle it). All that happens is it loads past the apple logo, the rainbow wheel pops up, the background loads and the search icon (magnifying glass) appears but nothing else at all beyond that. It just waits for ages (a few times that note has appeared that say's I need to restart the computer).
I've tried.
1) Re installing it
2) Reinstalling it on a different partition (that had windows on before) but nothing seems to work.
I really need to keep all my data so I want to be careful.

Whenever I boot up the SL install disk (either plugged in via USB drive or remote disc from my iMac), I select English as my language, "Continue" on the welcome screen, and when I get to the portion where I have to choose a disk to install onto, my MBA's hard drive has a yellow triangle on it and a caption underneath that says "Mac OS X Cannot Start Up From This Disk".
I've used Disk Utility to Verify and Repair, but still get the same result.
My MacBook Air is a 2nd generation machine, 120G hard drive (45G free), and MS Office 2008 installed. Other than that (and all my music and files), it's exactly as it came from Apple when I ordered it.

I have a new 09' 20" iMac Core Duo 2.66 with Snow Leopard.
Shut Down: = 7 Seconds. Tried 4 times, same result.
Start Up: 42-44 seconds to Login Screen
Login To Desktop fully loaded: = 6 Seconds
I am not impressed by the Start up or Login. I believe I clocked Leopard at the exact same speeds.
Overall I am not noticing much difference in anything.

This morning when I turned on my Imac, it presented me with the Mac HD icon, I had to select this to continue with the boot.
I've checked the startup options and the correct (and only) drive is selected, re selected it a few times just in case but this didnt have any effect.
Checked that none of my keyboard keys are sticking by unpluging it during the boot so the keyboard couldn't interfere, still the same.
I've tried a pram reset but don't seem to have any joy getting this to work. I hold the correct sequence of keys down just after the chimes ( cmd, option p and r) but that doesn't seem to get me the 2nd chime. Have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
Is this a sign my HDD is going? I use the system for a lot of video editing and photo editing, could this amout of usuage cause any problems

I had to reset my password through the Install Disc. Upon restarting my Mac, I chose to reset my Keychain Access password. However, it does not seem to have updated, and when I go to Utilities to open Keychain Access, it does not open. I created another admin account, and Keychain Access does not open for that either.

Recently my MBP has been running slowly, sometimes giving the spinning ball, not loading websites, etc. I ran disc check and it came up fine, so I thought I would completely clear the drive and start over with the Snow Leopard disc - then install mavericks (It seems a lot of websites are requiring a newer version of safari that I can't install because I'm running 10.6.8). So, I backed up everything I wanted, inserted the disc, and turned off the computer. I restarted and held the c key, and the screen went dim, then a dialog box popped up and told me to restart the computer. I've tried a number of times and have the same problem every time. When I restart from the HD I get this Problem Report:

this isn't an isolated issue - there are threads about this over at Apple and InsanelyMac: I'm unable to install Snow Leopard. When I run the installer, it'll tell me that "Mac OS X cannot be installed on "Macintosh HD", because this disk cannot be used to start up your computer" (Macintosh HD being my OS X volume, obviously). I'm seeing this issue on a relatively new 1.8ghz Macbook Air with a 128gb SSD - however, as far as I can tell from the other threads, the problem also affects iMacs and Macbooks.
Some people apparently attributed the issue to a PGP installation they had on their harddrive. Others found a file called backup.backupdb in their root - deleting it fixed the problem. However, most people don't have any of that installed on their computers and the upgrade still won't work. - if anyone has found a solution to the issue, please let me know :-( I'm stuck here. I don't have an external drive for the MBA and booting from a network drive has never worked on this particular machine - so I can't do a clean install, either.

I have installed Win7 on my Mac and it works fine other than the sound issue. However, when I tried to start up Snow Leopard using the option key, I get "EFI Firmware" and "Windows" as the the two options not the "HD Macintosh". anyway, when I select to start the Mac side, it takes about 10 minutes to start up-seriously. Once it starts up, everything is fine. Windows starts up immediately when I select it. I tried talking with Apple support but that was no help as they blamed it on the fact that Bootcamp does not support Win 7 at the moment.

In the last few days, when I hit a key to start up the computer, all I will get is a blank screen with the small, multi-colored, rotating disk icon. I can't get out of this unless I hold the power key down for about 5 seconds, which I know is probably not the right way to shut down.

I was trying to update my G5 to snow leopard from leopard 10.5.5 when it said it could not install. So I decided to quit installation and boot from 10.5.5. It started up and reaches the apple loading screen but goes off without reaching the log in screen. I have tried booting from the CD again and resetting the PRAM but it still wont work and continues to do the same

I am most certain that this is the case: foolishly, I didnt leave much free space and now the disk doesnt want to mount. I tried the single user mode, I also booted from DVD, they appear but the disk utility shows the disk but I cannot repair the disk, because it is unmounted. I tried the basic commands in single user mode, no effect either. I still cant get over the blue screen with the apple logo and a circle running. I need to free up some spasce. Unforetunately, important files were not backedup, so I really cant delete the whole disk. I need to delete specific files. I dont know where are my big files located - so, how do I orientate myself among the folders? Lets say I would delete my itunes libary, which I would later on renew thanks to the back/up, how would I delete them?

I've tried all the "fixes" to this problem, but none of them seem to work.•When I hold option, no hard drives show up.
•When using Disk Utility from the install disk, no hard drives are found. (Shows up just as "Media.")-If I wait long enough, they do show up, but problem still persists after repairs.
•Still doesn't boot after resetting PRAM
•I can't reinstall Mac OS because my computer does not recognize that there's a disk to install it on.
What makes this all weirder is that if I wait long enough, it seems to work just fine, but then once I shut it down, it won't restart any time soon.
I also seem to have a problem taking it out of sleep. The screen comes back on, but the spinning wheel shows up if I try to do anything before my fans spin up.

I couldn't wait any longer. I was going to wait until tomorrow, but I decided to test it out today. The following is a short video clip of the X25-M in action under Snow Leopard (on my late 2008 uMBP 2.53 GHz, 4 GB RAM).
It's not much of a benchmark. I simply selected everything in the Applications folder and hit open to start all the programs at the same time.
Needless to say, I am happy with the results!

This video is loading Photoshop, Illustrator and Soundbooth all at the same time. And then individually.

The video quality is not the best. It's on my old Olympus C5050z digicam.
Also, quick xbench results (left is old HDD, right is SSD):
