OS X :: New Leopard 10.5.6 Install - No Choice For Upgrade Clean Install?

Jan 27, 2009

I purchased the new Mac Box Set with Leopard 10.5.6, iLife '09 and iWork '09.

I was 50/50 on which type of Leopard install I wanted to perform today.

Looks like the disc made the choice for me and performed, what I'm assuming, is the upgrade. All of my files, settings, etc. were intact after the reboot.

OS X :: Leopard Upgrade Or Fresh Install?

Dec 22, 2008

considering upgrading to Leopard over the holiday weekend. I have quite a few programs already installed in 10.4 so I'm considering an upgrade. Coming from the Windows world recently, a fresh install was always better. What about OS X, same thing?

Also, can you load the install disk/image onto a USB stick, boot from it and install from it? Is that easy/possible?

OS X :: Clean Install Of Leopard And Then Upgrade To SL?

Sep 5, 2009

Since I have been running Leopard since december of 2007 I have accumilated a bunch of programs and files that i just don't use and don't need.

I have been running time machine for about a month now and I was thinking of just doing a clean install or Leopard to completely erase and clean up my disk and then do the SL upgrade.

My main concern- Can i plug in my time machine external and drag and drop the files and applications that I want and need and just leave all the other things on my external?

OS X :: When To Upgrade (Install Snow Leopard)

Sep 17, 2009

I bought a copy of SL a couple of weeks ago to update my early 2008 MBP, 4 GB memory. But after reading lots of complaints I decided to hold off until some bug fixes come out. Well....how long should I wait? How many of you are happy that you upgraded? Leopard works just fine for me, so I don't want to mess that up for no real reason.

OS X :: Leopard Upgrade - Cannot Login Post Install

Oct 26, 2007

I don't know what to do. I installed Leopard over 10.4.10 as an upgrade on my iMac C2D and after the system rebooted into Leopard for the first time, I can't login to the admin account. I just doesn't accept the password anymore! My second non-admin account works, but I'm completely locked out of the admin account! Even worse, I can't reset the password using the utility on the Leopard Boot Disk. The password reset utility doesn't seem to work! I really don't know what to do. I didn't backup before the install (I bought a second drive and was planning on backing up with Time Machine after Leopard was installed). I'm locked out of my own computer.

OS X :: How To Perform A Clean Leopard Install Using The Upgrade DVD?

Nov 2, 2007

I'm so annoyed regarding the broken Entourage <-> Exchange SSL root cert situation that I feel I must let others know of the following...

To perform a fresh / clean installation of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard to a totally blank/formatted hard drive using nothing but the upgrade DVD, do the following:

1. Boot from the Mac OS X Leopard Upgrade DVD (hold 'c' while booting).

2. Notice that the check for previous will fail (and "Continue" button is grayed out).

3. Choose the option of restoring from a Time Machine backup and go as far as you can (note: if you do actually have a Time Machine backup, pretend that you don't - making sure you've already removed any backup drives you may have plugged in).

4. Now go back to (almost) the initial screen.

5. Notice the "Continue" button is no longer grayed out...

6. Install Leopard while drinking a beer.

OS X :: Clean Install And Snow Leopard Upgrade

Aug 4, 2009

I assume that when I get my mac, a snow leopard drop in disc will be inside.

1. As soon as I finish the setup, and am presented with the desktop, I will immediately put in the snow leopard disc. In this scenario, is it ok to just do a normal upgrade since the system is pretty much untouched?
2. My understanding is that if I do a clean install, I will lose iLife, and will have to reinstall it using the discs that came with my machine, is this correct?
3. I'm confused about archive and install. Will all my applications (iLife, etc) be left alone? Is this sort of like a clean install, except you have a copy of your old system files? Is it ok to delete the old system files afterwards?
4. From the scenario I described in #1 which of the 3 installation methods is the best to do?

MacBook :: Re-install Tiger After Leopard Upgrade Failed

Mar 16, 2009

I tried installing Leopard on my iBook G4 and it did not succeed. Now, my computer has a half-installed upgraded OS that doesn't work. I was told at the Apple Store that my computer would run better with Tiger anyway since my processor is not up to snuff to handle Leopard (my iBook is from Jan 2006) and that I should erase the hard disk and re-install Tiger.

So now I'm trying to reinstall Tiger but when I insert the disk, start up the computer holding down the C key, the start stalls at the apple logo gray screen with the little cog spinning around. Nothing happens after that.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Upgrade Effective As Fresh Install?

Jun 18, 2009

I'm planning on buying a Macbook Pro 13" sometime during early August, so my question is that. Is an update of OS X from 10.5 to 10.6 just as effective as a fresh install of 10.6? I have bad memories from upgrading from one version of windows to another, and was simply wondering whether there would be any "excess litter"?

Mac Mini :: HDD Upgrade - SATA II - Tiger Up To Snow Leopard Install Solution?

May 14, 2010

I want to upgrade my wife's Mac Mini (2007, 1.66 GHz Core Duo, model T2300) with a new HDD. I've done that a couple years back, but times were less complicated. Here are my questions:

1) I hope a 7200 rpm drive will improve performance, without generating more noise than a 5400 rpm drive. Is that a correct assumption and would you recommend that?

2) Looks like many of the 500 GB 7200 rpm drives are SATA II. Will that be compatible with the plugs in the machine? Will I have to set any kind of jumper pins (I've never done that, though)? 3) My plan is to naturally do a time machine back up of the current drive to use it to build the new one. However, I still need to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The Mac mini came with a Tiger install disc. How do I get to SL with the least trouble? Do I need to start with the original Tiger disc, then use the Leopard disc and finally upgrade with the SL disc or can I use the SL disc right away?

I finally tried switching into 32bit mode. Nothing but fail.

Applications :: Aperture 2 Using Too Much Memory / Should I Upgrade To 8 Gigs?

May 28, 2009

I'm trying out Aperture 2 for the first time, I always used Iphoto. I have imported my large library into Aperture. Activity Monitor says that Aperture takes up 1.3 gb of memory when being used and 600 mb when It's not being using it.

Is it normal for Aperture 2 to being using this much memory? Iphoto uses 350 mb of memory. My 2.66 Ghz Quad Core has 6 gig's of memory. I run aperture alongside Iphoto, Firefox, Itunes, New York Times reader, Rhapsody's flash player, etc.

Have any of you tried the second option before? Or do any of you have advice on which path I should take?

Applications :: Aperture Hanging After Clean Install?

May 17, 2009

My MBP was running a little sluggish so I thought it was time to clean it up with a fresh install. All backups & apps have been reinstalled, all software is updated and everything is running pretty smoothly and much faster!!

But I'm having some issues w/ Aperture. I have connected it to my previous library and even have it in the same place as before, nothing is missing. Seems OK.

Now I'm trying to back up to a new vault and when I try to do that, it just hangs or runs extremely slow. When I try to click on the Vault options (the arrow up, red sync icon or the vault settings to add a new vault), this is where it starts to hangs. The menu comes up for 1 second but as soon as I release the trackpad button, the menu goes away. From the File menu, vault options are grayed out.

Anyone have these problems when reinstalling or have an idea on how to fix?

OS X :: SL Upgrade VS Clean Install VS Archive And Install?

Aug 25, 2009

I have many questions but few clear answers. What would be the benefits of doing a clean install vs. an upgrade? I have an iMac 8,1 which supposedly is eligible for a 64 bit kernel. Would I have to do a clean install or an "archive and install" to get the 64bit kernel? Also, can someone explain to me exactly what an "archive and install" is/does? From the name, I'd assume it would back up your HDD to an external storage unit, then do a clean install, but I'm probably way wrong.

One more question. If I so happen to choose to do a clean install, would Time Machine be an adequate way to restore all my data after the update? Any help or answers to any of the above questions would truly make my day. You will also be rewarded $1,000,000,000 in Happy FunTime money.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Mail Is In A Feedback Loop After Using Aperture?

Jun 29, 2012

Been a Mac user since 2000 and now have a first time problem with mail.  I used Aperture to send some pics about 2 week ago and now mail is making copies of the sent email in the "recovered mail" folder in the "On my Mac" drop down.  When I have done test emails to myself it takes mail a couple of minutes it send it, but when I check my yahoo mail there are multiple copies in the inbox.

I have done the following to try to cure the problem:

1) Deleted the mail .plist

2) Use Time Machine to get previous Mail app

3) Repair disk permissions

4) Deleted "recovered email" folder

I'm running Snow Leopard on a dual 2.66 Mac Pro.

P.S., in the time it took to write this post mail made about 30 copies of the sent email in the "recovered email" folder!
