OS X :: Upgrade HDD Or Clone Original Disk

Aug 5, 2009

Does a mac come preinstalled with any software that is 'first time' only, and is not included on the install DVDs? I am expecting a mini shortly, and don't know whether to upgrade the HDD straight away, or clone the original disk. I'd rather do a new install.

Mac Pro :: Time To Upgrade Original Dual Core 2x2,66?

Jul 19, 2009

Usually pick up a new mac tower ~4yrs or so and now that im halfway through usually more or less max it to the hilt to last me. Lately havnt had the time focus on trends of who's putting out the most rock solid drives, ram, and what the best setups are...so would appreciate some feedback on my simple upgrade project for the home office...My usage is primarily heavy photography in pshop, lightroom, etc and moderate HD video editing in FCP.

First off think its time finally replace my wrt54g linksys router with one that supports NAS via usb, firewire, or ethernet... Eyeballing the 610n. Goal is to backup my data via time machine over the network now.

So for this effort i'd like to pick up 2 external 1.5tb or 1tb drives here in order to support the time machine backups, suggestions? Currently have a couple seagate 500gb externals in raid 1 via usb directly into my tower for time machine backup purposes and they are low on space. I would most likely raid 1 these as well for redundancy. What's the deal on raid 5 & 10, do the basic osx disc utilities support that yet?

Current spec on the quad core mac pro tower is the stock 250gb drive used only for the OS and apps, plus a couple 500gb seagate drives.Like to pull the 2 internal seagate drives and replace with 4 of the most reliable 1tb or 1.5tb internal drives on the market, seagate & wd have usually treated me right. Like to run raid 0 on each of the 2 pairs internally for speed so id essentially have about ~2 tb of daily workable space. Are the 2tb drives there yet in terms of reliability & value?

Lastly as for ram, risers a & b both are paired with 512 in each slot for 2gb total. Thinking 8gb would probably be sufficient for my purposes. Where are the best ram deals currently for the quality stuff.Budget isnt too much of an issue, prefer to pay few bux more quality instead of crap though im a frugal spender. Figure ~100-200ea for the internal drives, bit more for the externals, ~300 for couple 4gb ram modules,~200 for the router...

MacBook Pro :: How To Move Original Files To External Drive, Not Just Copy And Delete Original

Dec 31, 2009

I've looked at some other posts that have gone over how to move files to an external drive, and they all say to use command while moving. I understand this copies the file and deletes the original, but when you make a copy and delete the original, you lose some of the original data, such as creation date, etc... This makes storage and organization more complicated than it has to be.

MacBook Air :: OS X Lion Won't Download To Original One?

Mar 23, 2012

Quicken 2007 finally upgraded to work on Lion, I'm ready to upgrade my original Macbook Air from Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  I have purchased Lion for an iMac, so when I go to the App Store, go to OS X Lion, it offers a download button.  I click this and the icon pops into my menu bar but the progress line never starts to fill in.  If I put the cursor over the icon it says "OS X Lion--Waiting..."  My Wifi is working and up to speed (20-25 Mbps). why I can't download Lion?

MacBook Pro :: Restore Lion To Original Factory Settings?

Apr 5, 2012

Early 2011 15" MBP with Lion (purchased new July 22, 2012). I had a two year old MBP running Snow Leopard then upgraded to Lion. The computer got flooded. I took out the hard drive and put it in a portable hard drive case and used it to restore my new MBP running Lion. It seemed to go very smooth and very easy. I am not a very knowledgable computer person, I use the computer for Photoshop, iTunes and email and just barely know not to turn it off with the on/off button! I keep noticing that I have two of many things in the computer, like library, multiple systems and multiple hard drives. I also get conflicting amounts of free hard drive space. I feel that I mistakenly copied too much stuff. I have backed up my files onto a fire wire hard drive. I want to "push a button" and have the computer  go back to the way it was the day I bought it. This time, I will take the time and move the files and programs manually (there are not that many). I am affraid a typical restore from Time Machine will only bring back the problems I am trying to get away from.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Reinstall It Without The Original Disc?

Jul 2, 2012

I recently upgraded the internal disc in my MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I had a 320GB and put it a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB. I didn't have the install disc and used the restore option in disk utility to copy files to the new drive before inserting it. It now works, but it's slow to load-up. How do I reinstall my OS, to optimise it? I've lost my original install disc and have since upgraded to Lion 10.7.4 BTW - my new drive also has some strange noises and I'd like to replace this with a new one ASAP.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why Doesn't The Original Document That Dragging And Dropping From One Folder To Another Move

May 13, 2012

Why doesn't the original document I'm dragging and dropping from one folder to another move? What's happening is the computer is creating a duplicte of the document and placing it in the new location with a new creation date.  The original document I wanted to drag and drop into a new location remains where it started as the "original" document and the new copy has this little arrow protruding up from the lower left of its icon. At first I thought it was an alias, but it's a copy of the document I thought I was dragging and dropping.

MacBook Pro :: Upgrade To OS X Lion?

Apr 1, 2012

I bought my Macbook Pro 13" in July 2010. The only main reason that led me to buy one is the idea that I can make life easier with OS X but also be able to use BootCamp for windows whenever I want. However, it seems that BootCamp crapped out on me, I can no longer fully install windows (Kept getting stuck at "completing installation"n) I've been tracking reviews and what not since Lion came out and most people with my model of MBP are saying that it slows down the MB's process quite a bit. There's nothing I can't stand more than a laggy system. Is there anyone with my model of Macbook Pro who upgraded to Lion finding it smooth sailing on your machine? I just really want BootCamp to work again and the only thing I haven't tried is upgrading my OS X.
