OS X :: Starting To See Random Slowdowns?

Apr 23, 2009

I have had my first Mac for about a month now (iMac 24" 2.8, 4GB). I have started noticing in the last few days, a somewhat frequently appearing "spinning disk" (don't know what it is called, but in Windows-land they call it "clocking"). In any case, I never saw this when I only had 2GB of RAM. Nor after I upgraded to 4GB which was a couple weeks ago. But lately this is occuring enough to be a bit annoying.

Applications :: Random Slowdowns In Safari - Spinning Beachball

Mar 17, 2009

Quite a while back, I switched from Firefox back to Safari, because Firefox was driving me crazy with it's intermittent freezes and whatnot. Safari was so much faster and allowed tabbing to menu form fields (which I think Firefox still does not do). But lately, it seems like Safari just slogs through everything it tries to do. Google maps is painful. Loading up the CBS website earlier took over a minute, and not because of a slow connection.

The spinning beachball now appears on every click it seems. This is was Safari 3, so I updated to Safari 4 beta, and it doesn't seem much better. It's odd because it didn't used to be like this...It just sort of started out of nowhere. One thing I do notice is that my hard drive is just churning away with activity at these times. Any ideas what could cause such random slowdowns? Restarting does not help. It's just as slow afterward.

Mac Pro :: Handbrake Encoding Slowdowns - Unresponsive

Oct 18, 2010

I ran into a bit of weirdness last night when converting a bunch of Xvid encoded AVI's over to H.264 m4v's using Handbrake. The reason I'm posting here is I think there might be an issue with the hard disk. To begin with, it ran (using 2-pass, turbo first pass) fine, up to finishing the turbo first pass, then it'd hang for about a minute, then carry on with the 2nd pass, running at around 300-400fps (not bad eh!). At around 40-50%, the hard disk starts sounding like it's performing a lot of tasks, even if nothing else is running. fps drops to around 100, then dips down to 30 or so and stays there. Entire system becomes slow / unresponsive. Seeing as the source files and destination for the output were on the same 2Tb drive (25% full), I wondered if perhaps this was too much for one drive to cope with (I'd previously been ripping videos / DVDs to an External drive, and never had this issue). I wiped an external drive, loaded the AVI's, and used it as a source drive, so all my main OS drive had to do was write the file, rather than both read and write at the same time. Same issue, but only for the first file. After this, the whole process ran smoothly. I'm not sure if the issue might have been that I was also copying different files as well as using handbrake, but despite stopping all other activities, this problem persisted, despite reboots, for a while.

Mac Pro :: Snow Leopard Sudden Slowdowns

Apr 8, 2010

Over the last three months, the OSX side of my Mac Pro has been a pain to use. I say OSX side because my Bootcamp partition which is running Windows 7 on a dedicated Intel X-25M is running very smooth and is a pleasure to use. However, on the Mac side, the system is simply unusable. I have been getting endless beachballs and constant freezes when launching Safari, iPhoto and iMovie 09 (the latter is the worst). Ive tried resetting my PRAM, resetting the video management controller and doing an archive install of Snow Leopard and nothing has helped. Ive followed previous advice and tried cloning my SSD Boot Drive onto another HDD which was completely free in my system. Booting from the cloned HDD showed better performance i.e. no beachballs. However with time, the issue has started again. So it seems it is not related to the SSD but rather to the OS which makes me think that I will have to do a clean install of Snow Leopard. Now, my Mac HDDs are set up as follows:

1: Intel X-25M 80GB G2 SSD Boot Drive
2: Hitachi 640GB Apple Stock HDD (clone of SSD Boot Drive)
3: Western Digital 1.5TB (Home folder located on this disk)

*Note: Ive also tried creating other user accounts but it seems the problem persists on all user accounts. The problem is I will be starting a very important project with Photoshop next month and I want this problem to be solved. So Im thinking this is my best option:

Secure erase my SSD with instructions from Macforums
Reinstall Snow Leopard onto this drive
Clone the Hitachi Drive onto the SSD

MacBook Pro :: Slowdowns When Hard Drive Activity

Nov 22, 2009

I noticed lately that my Macbook Pro (late 2008) can get pretty slow because of hard drive activity. Strange this is, there seems to be quite a lot of activity from time to time even when I'm doing next to nothing (but surfing and mailing). how I can diagnose/fix this? Or do I need more memory (got 2gb).

Feb 11, 2012

Howdy -- I've been having some problems with a 2010 MBP. Some very hard crashes along with a lot of slowdowns and spinning discs while using the various browsers (usually some combination of Safari, Chrome & Firefox)... I ofren have M'soft Word open as well.

In some crashes, the cursor still works but that's it. Nothing else on the screen responds or reacts and I eventually have to hold down the power button. I'm using Lion, but I did exeperience some of these problems before ugrading.

OS X :: Cause Of Random Restart Running 10.6.5

Dec 1, 2010

What would cause random restart? Maybe one in 15 times, when I lock my display, I will find that in the morning, my computer had restarted without my doing. Irritating as I rely on it for an alarm clock and as I have to log in, the alarm doesn't restart in the event this happens (almost overslept an exam today because of this). I am on a late 09 mb with 10.6.5 running.

OS X :: Random Crashes - How To Stop It

Jan 8, 2011

I have a 2008 iMac running OSX 10.6.5, 2.66Ghz Intel, 2 gig ram. I'm getting random blue screen crashes at least weekly. I don't have any hardware connected except an iomega external hd for Time Machine (and of course a keyboard and mouse). I'm never doing anything exceptional when it crashes. Usually just internet browsing (Chrome) or word processing (NeoOffice). The screen just suddenly goes gray/blue and I have to force it to shut down with the power switch.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard at the same time I installed Windows 7 (Boot Camp) and purchased the external hd. The problems started around that time. I have since wiped the disk and reinstalled both OSs, but am still facing the same problem.

Software :: Random Disconnects While Using The Net

Feb 7, 2009

I didn't know where to put this question, so I thought this would be the most appropriate. My computer (A macbook pro, with mac OS X, version 10.4.11) will randomly disconnect from the internet, mostly when I'm playing online games. Sometimes I can play for hours, other times only minutes before the next DC. I can restart and it will work for a few more minutes. The funny thing is it only does this when using the wired connection at my apartment, when i'm using the wireless at college it works fine. Part of my inquiry is checking if it's my computer or the ISP. None of my roommates have similar problems (though they all use PC's). One interesting thing I found when a tech from the ISP was trying to fix things is when I try to renew my IP it gives the same address after it "renews". I know I threw alot of jumbled info out there, but I'd like input from someone who knows macs.

Mac Pro :: 10.6.8 Random Restarting - How To Stop It

Jun 4, 2012

I own a MacPro, running OS X 10.6.8. Several weeks ago it began to restart on its own, right after I turned it on. I ignored the issue and continued to work with it for several weeks.  Suddenly yesterday it began to behave funky again, to the point where I cannot work with it at all. I turned on the computer, and few minutes later, it restarted on its own for several times. The point where it restarts is random, sometime in the sing in section (when you place the password) or while I work on some program. I was trying to run DiskWarrior, and the machine restarted on its own again!

I am also using part of this Mac as a PC, so I tried restarting on PC to see if its only on the MAC side, but it didn't make it through, it restart again before the windows icon appeared. Then after several restarts on the Mac side, an error message appeared, on the grey screen before the apple icon appears. It is all writen in code and it says something like: panic (cpu 0 caller 8x2aaf41): Machine check at .... (the picture is in my iPod but I don't know how to bring it into my computer). By searching this forum, I read I could try by reseting the PRAM and NVRAM, but I wonder what the consequences are when doing this. And if I try reinstalling the software, would I still be able to keep the PC side intact? Cause I still need to access the PC side as it is? I was able to run a backup for the Mac yesterday, but I couldn't for the PC.

Mac Pro :: 1st Gen Not Starting Up?

Apr 19, 2009

I have one of the first generation Intel Xeon Mac Pros (quad core, 2,66 Ghz I think). and in the last two days, I've been having some problems on startup...the power comes on, but the system never starts. If I turn the power on and off a few times, I can eventually get it to work.

Is this something easily repairable? My Apple Care ran out and I didnt renew it. If this is a costly fix, is it possible to buy a *new* bare bones Mac Pro and just swap the hard drives from my first one?

I looked on other threads with similar issues, but they all seem related to the NVidia 8800 crd, but I have an ATI X1900 installed by Apple.

OS X :: MBP Not Starting Up

Sep 25, 2009

I was listening to iTunes and browsing the web on safari in OSX10.6.1 and each program became unresponsive and the beach ball popped up. I then held in the power button to turn off my mac and I pressed it a second time to turn it back on. After waiting about 15 seconds on the gray screen a file folder with a question mark came up. I set up a genius bar appointment for Saturday (store has been closed for remodeling and opens back up then) but I would like some knowledge as to what is going on before going into the Apple Store.

CPU and Ambient temps could be at 40C. System load is also minimal (95% idle, eg).Haven't heard of this as a common problem, but is this fan behavior indicative of any type of problem?

MacBook Pro :: Random Popping Noise?

Jul 3, 2008

I just received my new MacBook Pro (2.4GHz) to replace my older CD Macbook Pro from 2006 which was suffering fan problems.

My new MBP is great and faster, with the exception of a really annoying "popping" sound that is coming from the left hand side of the laptop. It's sporadic and might happen every few minutes, or every 30 sec. or varying lengths of time in-between "pops."

I searched the forum hear and didn't come up with virtually anything at all, but the Apple Support Discussions had several threads on the topic, most pointing to the Hard Drive and the sound possibly coming from the heads parking on the disk.

Could anyone offer any advice on the subject? I just got this brand new MBP from AppleCare and really don't want to have to go through all the work on getting another replacement if this sound is normal.

Mac Pro :: Seemingly Random Freezes In Leopard 10.5.4

Sep 9, 2008

In the last week or so i have been experiencing lock ups every 15-20 minutes, which last for around a minute. The problem has only presented itself after I moved to a dual monitor configuration, although this may be coincidental, given the nature of the problem. The problem only seems to occur when the system is reading from from the main hard disk however testing the disk (and performing a directory/file test) says that the disk (and all others in the system) are functioning properly.

Curiously, any audio playing at the time, regardless of the application it originates from, continues to play while the rest of the system is unresponsive. It also appears as if the keyboard and mouse are disconnected during this time, and the power lights on each begin to flash, and the Caps lock key no longer lights up. I would like to avoid replacing the system disk if at all possible, as i have already had to do this three times since last December, when i purchased the system, due to drives developing faults.
