OS X :: Looking For Time Machine Password Protection
Apr 7, 2008
I use Time Machine to back up my data and am very satisfied but have one problem with it. Is there anyway to password protect the backed up data or even the entire external hard drive?
My user account is password protected but it appears as if anyone who has physical access to my external hard drive can access all of my information. If this is the case, how can I protect my data?

I have a time machine back up of my mac on an external hard drive. If this HD was stolen/lost would an avergae joe be able to access the data. i.e if it was plugged into another computer would all my files be accessible.
I use a password to login to my admin account and i'm the only user account.
Do i need to add some protection to my external? I realise that a clever mac user could get around any protection.

I have password protection enabled on my operating system so that I can lock the computer, and also so that a password has to be entered after the computer has been sleeping or has been closed. However, when starting the computer from being powered off, no password is required.
My question is: if the computer is in sleep mode or is closed, if someone powers it off and the turns it back on, will they be able to bypass the password protection?
I know I can set the computer to ask for a password before logging in after startup, but it seems that if the computer is in a password protected sleep, that the sleep image would make the computer remember that it was password protected, and would prompt for a password before logging into my account.

I just did a clean install of Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro and I'm at the part where it asks if I already own a Mac. I choose restore "From a Time Machine backup", I select the backup volume but then the system is asking me for the passoword to my Time Capsule. What? I don't remember giving it a password. I tried my system password from my Leopard installation along with a bunch of common passwords I've used and none of them work.

My MacBookAir was frozen and was cleaned up in understanding that I can recover all settings and backup from Time Machine. But - password to enter Time Machine network was cleaned up too... It was the first long indusctrial sort of looking password that was given to me by the Time Machin during the process of starting it up. I made a note of it but lost the notebook..

I use PowerPoint for work, and I sometimes receive password-protected files that my iMac (OS X, 10.5.8, PowerPoint for mac: 2008) cannot open.
If I want to open and work on such files, do I have any options besides running Windows?
If I run Windows, should I use XP or Vista? I do not have any use for Windows except getting to those password-protected PowerPoint files.

Hard drive recently failed. Replaced hard drive and used Time Machine to recreate system. Everything seems ok, but I cannot install software. It prompts for a password, as it always has, but the system is rejecting my password as invalid. This is the same password I have had for years (yes..i know). I cannot figure out how to reset it since it doesn't recognize the original password.

I was looking to buy an iomega hard drive because of its portability and firewire. Here's one I found on amazon at a discount : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Iomega-500GB...9149335&sr=8-1
Everything seems fine but for something so portable and easily lost (or stolen/misplaced) as well as carrying my entire mac backup (docs, photos, videos, etc.), I think password protection or some other security feature is essential nowadays.
Does anyone know whether the imoga hard drives have password protection or not? If not, are there any other hard drives with both firewire as well as good security?

My login.keychain password is not recognized anymore, i am very sure about the actual pwd string and I tried to restart apps and machine already, I believe the file got corrupted somehow, hence various applications such as FTP clients cannot autoconnect to external resources
I am bound to recover from a Timemachine backup, but all discussions are just dealing with recovering items in the keychain file once it is restored, what about the keychain master password? is it contained in the login.keychain file so that restoring that file to the HD will allow me to regain access to the saved items?

I have MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Penryn 15". OS X Leopard, 6 months old.
In trying to add up to a wireless network at home (with a PC and a laptop Windows XP) I switched to "start from network" on System Preferences. On reboot, shows image of file with a ? or flashes a world clip. Usual command+S or C, Alt, attempt to reboot from CD fail. Before attempting anything else I don't want to lose my documents. When reboot with Alt, the padlock with space for password appears. I didn't set a password when I installed OS.

I am running version 10.4.11 of OS X and would like to find software that will allow for password protection for a folder(s) on an external hard drive used with my MAC. I want others to be able to access most of the files on this drive however. Setting multiple users with passwords will not accomplish what I am looking to do.

Gah, internet is messing up, logged me out I have to rewrite my whole long message....when transferring between my new MBP and ibook G4 on 1st startup.... it asked me to connect by firewire. Idon't have a firewire that has 1 side the new firewire connector and the other side old (I didn't even know that the shape of the firewire had changed). I tried to do it wirelessly and it said it was going to take 106 hours so I stopped it to use my computer.
Now I am trying to transfer again. I don't have a firewire cable that will work. I have an ethernet, but when I try to connect to my computer server (through ethernet or wirelessly) it says that I don't have sufficient privileges. My password (which I am sure is correct) DOES NOT WORK and I don't know why. I tried to disable all security so I can get in with no password, but nothing I do is working.
Any ideas? How can I transfer my files? How can I get back to that transfer wirelessly screen that occurred at start up? Migration Assistant only gives me a firewire option. Is there a firewire that will connect between old and new firewire models???
How do I set up a network connection with no password protection? (Or why isn't my password working?)

I am using an external hard drive that is connected via USB 2.0 to my Airport Extreme to back up using Time Machine. In order to get Time Machine to recognize the hard drive in question, however, I had to mount it as a drive on the network. Can I put a password on the hard drive that is separate from my network's password? What I want is a situation in which people can get onto my network using a password but CANNOT access the Time Machine backup hard drive.

The problem appears to be associated with the Apple WiFi password. I have been using this password for several years before buying my Apple iMac without any problem. procedure for changing the WiFi password.

I run Windows 7 on my Mac using Parallels Desktop and the virtual machine is protected by Kasperky. My question is, will this virus protection conflict with ClamXav or Norton 11 if I were to put either into my Mac or should I remove the Kaspersky first. In addition, if I did have to remove the Kaspersky, would any AntiVirus/Spyware specific for Mac also protect the virtual machine?

I just replaced my HD on my 15"MBP. The install went well until restoring my data from Time Machine. The apps came over fine but none of my data did. Yes, I checked all the boxes on the "restore from backup" menu.
Of course now when I start up time machine the backup isn't there. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the backup? I have it on two places - a time capsule and a separate external HD.

Have installed an 120GB SSD in my Macbook Pro 2010 but have had a couple of problems. Sometimes when you try to enter time machine and or Finder the machine freezes. Also the only way out of this is to hold the power button down and reboot. I have been informed by Apple that there are slight differences between the 2009 and 2010 models. Another odd thing is Skype will not load up automatically on startup, despite making sure this option is ticked. Most other things seem to work. Reinstall original hard drive and all OK.I have tried this with OCZ and Crucial SSDs and get same result. I have also installed the SSDs by cloning and by direct original OS X disk.
