OS X :: Copying IPhoto Library To WD External Hdd?
Apr 1, 2010
I have a iMac OSX 10.5.8 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and I am trying to copy my entire library contents in iPhoto to a Western Digital My Book Essential 2.0 (1TB capacity). I am fairly computer literate but kinda not.
How do I copy all my photos (21K photos & 102GB worth) which are mostly RAW format onto the WD external drive?

I am trying to copy the iPhoto library to my newly installed NAS drive. I have 2 libraries (3.6gb and 16.8gb). The smaller one copied across no problem but when copying the second I get an error 36 after it has copied 30mb of data.
I have tried all avenues:
- Restarted iPhoto holding down alt and opt and repairing permissions.
- Rebuilt library using iPhoto Library Manager
But I still get the same message. I have backed up the whole Mac using Superduper to a small external drive and that works fine. Part of the reason I bought the NAS drive was to back up photos, and now it doesn't work!
Also, I do when checking Console I get the following message regularly:
12/05/2012 09:16:22.050 fseventsd: scan_old: bailing out because device mounted @ /Volumes/Buffalo_Cloud has dls 0x0 and dls->fci 0x0

I got a WD10EALX Cabiar Blue drive last week and copied my existing internal drive that had Tiger OSX on it. It booted fine until I copied an iphoto library from a friend's Mac and now this disk won't boot. I get the circle with the slash through it and the folder with the question mark on it. I ran it through disk utility and it was verified with no problems.

I've been storing all my pictures in an external hard drive, from which I linked my pictures to iPhoto '09. Now I have a new hard drive and would like to transfer my pictures to it but don't know how to keep all the information associated with the pictures in iPhoto (such as the "Places" and "Faces" info I've added).
I've copied all the pictures to the new HD, then opened iPhoto while pressing "option". Then I selected the folder in my new HD to be used by iPhoto, but it didn't work.
What should I do with the file in my Pictures folders (a file named 'iPhoto library')? Do I copy that to the new HD as well?

I want to copy my iTunes library from one external drive (currently connected to an iBook) to a 2nd external drive (connected to an eMac). The library is almost 60GB and so can not fit on either machine's hard drive.
The music currently plays through the iBook from the first external drive.
I want to be able to play the same music on the eMac (through the 2nd external drive).
Which is the best way to go about this?
Should I:
a) Connect the 1st external drive to the eMac and manually drag and drop the music from there to the 2nd external drive, or
b)Use Silverkeeper Basckup and do a backup of the Music folder in the 1st drive to the 2nd drive, after connecting the 1st to the eMac?
or is there not much difference in doing either? Or is there a more efficient option using iTunes?

I am trying to copy my aperture 3 library (126GB) to an external hard drive to free up space on my local hard drive.
When it is at the final 1gb of the process I recieve an error message:
"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Aperture 3 Library” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)"Â
I have repaired the aperture library and repaired permissions and this did not work.
I'm running 10.9.3

I have experienced a problem after I updated to SL last night.I made a fresh install of both SL and iLife 09 on my mbp unibody late 2008.
Afterwards, I replaced the my fresh iphoto library simply with my old iphoto 09library from time machine (no migration tool, only copy pasts).
But now I recognized a problem that I see no iphoto library in my Desktop and Screensaver Menu in control panel. I cant set iphoto library photos as screensaver cause I cant see them
Does anyone have a solution for it? or does anybody face the same issue?

I have purchased an external Hard drive to move my grandfather's iPhoto library from his iMac's internal to it (so that it can be accessed by both of my grandparent's accounts instead of just one since they share the same camera), and was wondering if moving it to the external would be enough of a back up or if it should be backed up again? The drive will be partitioned so that there is 400gb available for time machine and 100gb available for "everything else", like the iPhoto library for example. I partitioned it so that time machine backups don't squeeze the iPhoto library space down to 0. Is it nonsensical to have the library back up to the other partition as well since it is on the same drive, or would that in fact be a good idea?

So I decided to transfer my entire Iphoto Library to my external HD, about 1 hour ago. I did the transfer, and checked to see if I could open my new Iphoto Library from my external by pressing option before clicking on Iphoto and choosing the new library. Everything worked fine, so I deleted my Iphoto library on my mac HD. After deleting all the files I tried to open my Library on my external and Iphoto opens without and pictures. The Iphoto Library on my external has 14.97 GB being used so I know the files are there, I just cannot open them.

I'd like to migrate my old iPhoto Library from an external HD to my new iMac. I've copied the 'iPhoto Library' folder to my desktop, but am not sure what to do from there because I've got two library files (?), 'Library.iPhoto' and 'Library6.iPhoto' in the 'iPhoto Library' folder.Â
I've read some of the other discussions re. migrating libraries, but I'm afraid I'm confused! I've been mostly PC based for so long, I don't know all the dos and don'ts of using Mac... and don't want to mess with files and folders I'm not supposed to touch.Â

Which files do they need to get my library exactly as I have it now? The way the photos are organized by me (Not the individual dates the were imported as the 1st time) I spent hours organizing my library by month/even for the last 5 years. In finder do I just copy the entire iPhoto library to my external HD? or some specific set of files.. remember I will be putting it on a brand new iMac for my mom.

I bought a new Retina Macbook & have over 10 years of photos that I DO NOT want to bring into my new computer.
I want to transfer them to an external storage drive (Lacie Rugged Thunderbolt).Â
Prior to Yosemite, I could go into iPhoto from the left column of finder window and transfer.
One of the crappiest things I don't like about New iPhoto is that it's so difficult to export the photos. It feels like Apple thinks they own them. Pulling my music off was much easier.
Finder no longer gives me the iPhoto option anymore. The PHOTOS Folder only shows photos that came in from a camera or other source.Â
Photo Stream can't do it as it's just a storage drive. My photos are set up to go from photo stream right into my Macbook so they have to be somewhere on my hard drive.Â

Just wondering what the best way is to save all my photos, events, tags, modified and originals etc. to an external hard drive and then reload it to another iPhoto exactly the way it was.
Also same for iTunes if possible. How to save ratings, playlists, play count etc.

Ive been building up quite the iPhoto library, about 12,000 photos; and it will be growing much more as I just got a new camera. I always have the scary thought of losing photos, I need to start backing up my photos.
I am looking for an application that will be able to do a backup of my photos to my external hard drive (160GB).
My iPhoto library is currently just under 38GB. I would like to be able to plug in my external drive to my macbook about once a month and run some kind of application to backup my whole iPhoto library to the external...
Oh and I would really like it to be a GUI, I don't really like working in terminal.
Does anything like this exist?

I have recently bought a new MacBook. I initially thought it would be better to run iPhoto from the external hard drive, but after moving some things around I now want to run it straight from the MacBoook hard drive.
I tried copying the library from the external hard drive to the MacBook but I keep getting the following message....
"You cant copy iPhoto Library because it has the same name as another item on the destination volume, and that volume doesnt distinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames."

Recently, despite careful file management my internal hard drive has reached its capacity so I purchased a 2TB WD My Book to move many of my files to to make room. After reformatting it (Mac OS Extended Journaling) starting copying stuff over but I struck a problem when I tried copying my iphoto library file over. Its about 47gig and every time i try it begins to copy but then it suddenly stops around 600mb saying it cant read or write something in the file. Is the file too big? Do I need to format the drive it differently? Hopefully not as I've already moved a heap of files over.

I am transferring my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and it is agonizingly slow. Â
I am attempting to make room on our iMac so am moving our 193 GB iPhoto library to our Seagate 2TB external hard drive. The drive is brand new AND is formated properly as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but the current copy estimate is for it be completed in over 80 hours. I dont beleive the drive is broken as data is continuing to be transferred and not completely hung up. Â
When I transfer other folders/files the process is much much faster. Problem only seems to be with iPhoto library that I have found. Â

I have an iMac that is rapidly filling up. I would like to move my iTunes and iPhoto library to my external harddrive (I currently use for Time Machine). Is this possible or even adviseable? If I were to do this, what would I need to do. Is it as simple as moving the folders that hold these files on to the external. Would the programs find them.

I have an IMAC osx 10.4.11 (purchased in 2007) and tried copying an archive from iphoto and itunes.
I have read the posts on error code 1309 (can't copy to My Book) and followed the instructions given. When I checked the settings, it displays that the format is FAT32 on the bottom left, and indicates that I have the volume set to MAC OS Extended Journal.
The ERASE tab indicates that the volume format is MS-DOS.
I don't have much data on MY BOOK and still have it on my hard drive so I'm not concerned about losing it.
I created an archieve of images in iphoto (115 GB-took 4 hours) and want to copy it to the My Book (500GB) drive.
Please provide guidance so I can complete this task.
Also, any advice on how to cut down on the amount of time this took. I have 11,000 images on my HD.
