OS X :: Can't Get Into Bloated Folder In The Terminal To Run

Jun 24, 2010

I leave my music folder out of it, because I'm constantly getting new music and I'd like to be able to have a backup that I can actually access and listen to my music. So here's what I have setup. Here is my crontab:

Code: @daily rsync -a /Users/ianyoung/Music/iTunes/ /Volumes/Network Storage/Audio/ &> /dev/null This rsync tab just backs up my itunes folder to my drobo every night. Okay, so here's a ls -l of the itunes folder on my imac:

Code: drwxr-xr-x 11 ianyoung staff 374 Jun 21 18:05 iTunes Now that's the folder whos contents are getting rsynced every night. well here's the folder that it's going to...

Code: drwxr-xr-x+ 11367 ianyoung staff 60548526 Jun 21 18:05 Audio I don't know wtf happens, but the filesystem thinks that that folder is so huge. I can't even get into it in the terminal to run an ls.

Intel Mac :: Pictures Is Now A Package That Opens Terminal / Why Isn't It A Normal Folder

May 26, 2012

I've been struggling to move my data (photos / music etc) from my old G5 imac to my new imac (lion).Had iphoto all sorted (copied the files from external HD to Pictures folder. But now when I click on 'photos' it opens terminal (!!??)*I can see the files within but only if I CTRL click and choose 'open package'.I really don't understand. I just opened iphoto and it says I have to 'upgrade' again.I did just attempt to open the original iphoto library which is still on the connected hard drive but I didn't upgrade and don't know why that would affect the duplicate library on my new imac?

Applications :: Terminal Command To Delete A Folder Filed With Locked Files?

Jun 27, 2007

I was helping a friend by reformatting his pc and reinstalling windows because it was slow, when I was downloading the drivers for it on my MacBook Pro (didn't have access to the router since it's downstairs and his pc didn't have a wireless card), it downloaded a folder filled with locked files, it comes several folders deep and all of the files are locked, fun. So I tried to delete it using sudo rm -r, but it says I don't have sufficient privileges, anyone know a command I can use to delete it all? I'd rather not do it by hand, that'd take forever.

MacBook Pro :: Consolidating Copy Of ITunes Folder On External Drive Via Terminal

Jun 28, 2012

I've recently got a new MacBook Pro, and for at least 6 years or more, I've been using Windows to handle my iTunes library. At one point, when trying to transfer my library, somehow I lost ALL my music. As a result, I learned to back it all up...And I learned to be patient when doing so. Any way, I want to make sure that when I transfer my files THIS time, I do it right. I just need to consolidate my iTunes library that I have backed up to an external hard drive to another folder on the same drive.

Then when I move it to iTunes on my Mac, I only have to put the files into the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder. That said, I'm fairly decent with using the terminal; I've used Ubuntu for a while, and right now I'm using Fedora. I would use the terminal on my Mac, but I really don't want to use it there; I'll stay safe and let my Fedora computer do the work. That said, I know that both Mac and Fedora have "rsync" and "find" as part of the UNIX kernel both are built off of. With all that out of the way.

My question is simply which commands I ought to use to manually consolidate the files in the iTunes folder to a separate folder on the same external hard drive. I also happen to have a number of duplicate files, for some reason, except the duplicates are sometimes .mp3 files, while others are .m4a files. While the majority of my music has been restored because of "Purchased" section of the iTunes Store, I'm unsure of which files I'm looking to preserve; Do I just copy the mp3 files, or both? I hate doing music database repair.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Drain 2 GB Of RAM - Bloated?

Dec 19, 2010

So after startup it uses 2 gb of Ram. Some people say that Snow Leopard releases this RAM when needed, this however is not true. If I run VMware and an App, the RAM is full and it starts using the disk. Why on earth does Snow Leopard drain 2 GB of RAM. It's ridiculous. ( VMware is limited to 1 gb and the App also uses 1 gb, so 2 gb in total ). I got 4 gb of memory btw. I wouldn't dare running Snow Leopard with only 1 GB of Ram, something Windows 7 does with no problems at all.

Applications :: Bloated ITunes - More With Every Version

Mar 26, 2009

Am I the only one who feels that iTunes has become far too bloated and heavy on system resources for such a simple task as......playing mp3s? Theres no reason for iTunes to be taking up 70+ mb of ram. And why is still called 'iTunes' when its more of a media central application, seeing how it combines iphones, ipods, apple TV, ringtones, tv episodes, etc. Its become way too broad to be called iTunes.

This is one thing that bugs me. Some of us prefer not to use such a proprietary based digital audio player like the ipod/iphones and have more common sense by using UMS based players which dont require software, and therefor have no need for all the extra features of it. And seeing how theres really only itunes for mac thats worthy of being used, im pretty much stuck on iTunes. Basically, I *ONLY* use iTunes for mp3 playback on my mac. If this was the case on windows side, I'd have a plethora of choices (im expecting blind apple sheep to start screaming at me for that one). Each time I setup iTunes with a new installation or new login account, i turn off ALLLL the features. The only one that stays is internet radio.

Basically: iTunes has become far too bloated and broad. There should be something lighter for such a common, simple, everyday used task as playing mp3s.

Hardware :: Is Logitech Control Center Bloated

Oct 22, 2010

I have a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse and it is great with my Mac. Out of the box, it "just works" to about 95% of what I need. The button on top initiates Expose which is what I want. The "back" button initiates dashboard. I would rather have the back button be, well, back, and the forward button initiate dashboard. To do this I think I need to install the Logitech software - Logitech Control Center.

So, my question, is it worth it? I'm kind of a minimalist and prefer to not put software on my computer unless it is absolutely necessary. If the LCC is considered bloat (or even halfway bloat) it won't be worth it to me.

Applications :: Itunes Library Bloated With Clones

Nov 16, 2010

I have a fairly large music collection consisting of ripped CDs (wma and mp3), downloaded albums and singles (from itunes and other sites), my own recorded music, podcasts...you name it. I've used itunes on a number of PCs and now have it on my new imac. I want to gather everything together in one place.

I've also gone through the process of backing up my collection in a rather haphazard manner, which has meant that when I gathered all my mp3s from various places, there were many cloned folders and files all over the place. I seem to have about 4 or 5 different folders called "itunes". Also, due to the fact that itunes consolidates your collection by copying some files, there are even more duplicates kicking around.

The result is, that I now have an mp3 library of around 260gb of files, and probably about 200gb of that is made up of duplicate files...................

Applications :: ITunes And Bloated - Can't Drag / Drop Music And Videos Directly Onto Phone

Jun 9, 2010

I freaking hate iTunes. Programs for simple tasks like uploading music onto devices should be efficently coded, not resource hogs that are incredibly unintuitive and needlessly complicated. Why can't we just drag and drop music and videos directly onto our phone like we can with just about every other media player? I already have all of my music organized just as I want it on my computer. Just let me drag the folders I want directly into the iPhone without having to bother with a 100mb download that runs like crap.

There's absolutely no excuse why such a simple function needs such a complicated program. Quote:..................

Applications :: Unable To Use Terminal / Terminal Stucks At Blank Login Window

Anybody see this before? I opened up Terminal.app and the window is completely blank. There is nothing in it whatsoever. Looks as if bash never started. The title bar simply says "Terminal — login — 80x24". I can type whatever I want in the Terminal window like it's a text document and nothing happens. If I restart the computer, this seems to fix the problem, but it seems to only be a temporary fix as the issue happens again soon after.

OS X Server :: Processes Started In Terminal End When Terminal Closed?

Jan 29, 2008

I'm running Symantec Backup Agent on our mac osx server. I start the agent in the terminal (./agent.be). It returns a notification that it started the service, however, it doesn't return to the prompt. Closing the terminal gives a warning that the process will be closed if the terminal is closed. Closing it does kill the process. Ctrl+c to return to the prompt also kills the process. So it's as if once the process is started in the terminal, nothing can be altered.

I am not much of a mac guy so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.

Anyone have any advice on how to handle this so the process is ALWAYS running?

OS X :: Unable To Install Terminal App - Run Terminal As Admin?

Aug 19, 2010

I'm on a standard user account and I would really like to install icalbuddy which is a terminal app. When I install apps normally I simply have to provide a admin name and pw, but this doesn't work when it is a terminal app because it requires that the 'su' command be run.

So I thought that I could run terminal as admin through 'su - admin' and then install. But of course the admin account doesn't have access to the user folder where the installer is located. I just can't win.

Software :: Copy Folder Deletes Original Folder Contents THEN Copies New Ones

Oct 29, 2008

I've come across a strange behaviour of Finder when copying a folder over another with the same name. I'm using 10.4.11.

Say I have a folder named "Test" and it contains "File1" and "File2" and I copy it over another folder named "Test", which contains "File3" and "File4".
After copying I would expect folder "Test" to contain all four files, but it doesn't! It will only contain the two that I copied over, the original two will be deleted.

Is there any way to have finder replace files of the same name when copying and retain all other files in the destination folder?

Before:
/Test/File3, File4After:
/Test/File1, File2Desired:
/Test/File1, File2, File3, File4
