OS X Yosemite :: Cannot Open DMG Files
Dec 8, 2014
So installed Yosemite. All seemed fine but
I now cannot open dmg files. If I double click on them, nothing happens. If I say open with "diskimagemounter" nothing happens. If I say open with Disk Utility it says wrong version of Disk Utility. If I move them back to a computer with Mavericks, they open fine. Repaired permissions and no change.

When I drag-and-hold a file to a folder with the purpose of placing it into one of its subfolders, I can't go past the first folder: in other words, unlike Mavericks, where I could drag the file and open one folder after the other until I could just release my file into the final destination, since I installed Yosemite I can't do it any longer and when I place the dragged file over a subfolder all I see is a "+" sign, but the folder won't open. Is there a way to restore that functionality?

I don't remember if this was a problem in previous versions of OS X but I have just begun using Yosemite and am sick an tired of seeing that sidebar in every window I open. I have searched the net looking for a way to default to "no sidebar" for every window I open to no avail.
Any terminal command or other solution to change this default behavior?

I tap on the Mail Icon in the Dock, Mail doesnt Open, quite often there is what appears to be a Mail Window opening but it disappears as quick as it arrives.
The only way I can Open Mail is to lightly double tap my mouse pad, which pops up a menu from the Mail icon, there is often a list of previously opened Mail windows, I can often select one these, but only the one showing a Black 4 sided Diamond shape opens a Mail window, if it is blank or has a Tick, it doesnt open at all.
Failing that I have to select Open New Viewer window
[URL] ... See image above, this may explain easier my problem, normally MAIL should open by tapping the Mail Dock Icon, I just did that , it did nothing, zilch.
instead I have to often SELECT "New Viewer Window", other times I get by, by selecting one of the recently opened Windows with a Black shape next to it !!

I do happen to have adobe CC products installed by the way.
Anyway, it is showing that the finder is always active. You can see as it has that black dot under it in the dock. I can open new finder windows and also open google chrome, but the odd thing is, I can't open certain programs. Chrome and finder and system preferences will open, but I can't open the terminal, mail, safari, app store, Preview and other apple programs. I can't even open "about this mac" when I click on the apple icon. When I click on a program in the dock, it shows the icon bounce and there is a blink on the screen, but the program never opens.
This is pretty much rendering my computer useless. I already fixed disk permissions. I tried to remove the com.apple.finder.plist file, but I can't find it. The library folder is under my HD and not under my user name. I'm not sure that is normal. I also created a new user account, but it is behaving the same way.

The icon starts to open and then I get an error message. Some of the apps are Adobe Reader and various Garmin apps. The message is "<name of app> quit unexpectedly" and then it gives a long list of computer info. This happened suddenly and I don't know why. I have used the Disk Utility App but it has not worked.

This has happened multiple times now since installing Yosemite. The problem displayed above is that after force quitting I can't open an application all. Even though it's not running anymore, as proven by the black dot that would be under the icon if it was. I've had this happen with 2 different applications: Steam and Google Chrome.
My system Specs are:

-2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
-Memory 4gb 1600 MHz DDR3

In the past I could hold down the command key while double clicking on a folder and it would open in it's own separate window. Now in OS 10, it produces a tab, but not a separate window.
I almost feel embarrassed asking such a simple question, considering all the major problems I read about to see if the answer to my question was already up there.
I have some other questions - such as why Photoshop works so slowly, etc, which I'll ask later.

Since the Yosemite upgrade, Screen Sharing App seems to try opening an afp share first when connecting via a vnc:// shortcut... It takes a while before being connected in VNC (2-3 minutes) !
Remote has been configured via a command line found in an other discussion in this board (Upgraded to Yosemite and can no longer remote into my work iMac through screen sharing- it is turned on in settings?. Connecting via the RealVNC App is super fast (like 5 sec).configuration was exactly the same in Mavericks and it worked well and fast !

I use Apple Mail 8.1. I tried installing SpamSieve 2.9.18 [to protect against a deluge of spam not handled by Apples's Junk Mail system] on my early 2011 17" MacBook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.1 At step creating Rule to move all messages to Spam folder, spinning wheel of death appeared. Had to restart Apple Mail, then unable to open Mail Preferences. Have uninstalled SpamSieve by their directions, yet Mail still won't allow opening of Preferences window. Mail also no longer appears when I click on its icon in the dock, unless I hide all other applications. Plus cannot initiate a new mail message (although it still receives new email). "About Mail" also no longer does anything. I am tempted to reinstall Apple Mail 8.1 (not at all clear how to do that)...

I usually connect my iPad as soon as I've heard the startup chimes, but since upgrading to Yosemite, whenever the iPad is connected, iPhoto opens. Usually, nothing will open until all my extension things like Dropbox are happy, but iPhoto somehow manages to kick off. Now, I don't like iPhoto. I don't understand it and it rarely does anything I want it to, so I don't often use it and I particularly do not want it to open, slowing up starting and serving no purpose.

I have recently found the problem that I open the Apple Mail app and nothing is functional. When I try to edit account settings it doesn't let me access those. I want to reinstall mail app or at least update its settings. I read in some blog that yosemite "guesses" and changes your prefered account settings so I wonder if that is the cause after I backed up my emails recently I had loads of messages asking for my passwords, which never happened in Mavericks.

I had a MacBook Air late 2008 and it was destroyed by a mean person, now I have a late model MacBook 2009 and updated everything, but I cannot figure out how to load Apache Open Office. It keeps giving me a warning that the security system won't allow anything that is not made by Apple or has its approval or something, but it worked on the 2008 Mac and it worked awesomely! Why can I NOT find anything about it now that I have Yosemite , which is also hard to remember to spell!
