I'm currently running Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro (Unibody). I am having an issue with System Preferences crashing when I try to change the desktop background.
I have tried deleting the following .plist files:
com.apple.desktop.plist
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
com.apple.screensaver.<random number>.plist
I created another admin account and it works fine.
I oped system preferences and it crashes, I open activity monitor and force quit it and then open it again and it crashes.. what can i do? i got a mac book pro 2.4 ghz intel i5 10.7.4 4 b

So my friend and I played a trick on an intern here at work who just got a new MBP. We swapped his background out for a vista one - real simple, right.
Well, he got back and had a good chuckle about it UNTIL - the system preferences panel crashed after he tried to switch it back.
So here is the only symptom:
Open system preferences
Click "backgrounds and screensaver"
window opens, looks ok
window closes and error screen pops up saying "system preferences unexpectedly closed"
When I startup in the morning, sometimes the preferences that I have set in the finder are changed or not loaded. IClock doesn't load the time and Date as I set it up. Also the view preferences are changed from Column to Icon.

Like I know how you can change the user name in system pref. but how do you change the name next to the little house icon? I'm having a strange problem with my MacBook. I'm dual monitoring, and yesterday the screen on my actual MacBook went to the blue apple background instead of the BMW M Coupe I had as the background. Strange, but I didn't really care. Then today, I decide to change the background on the 21". I try and change it once and System Preferences crashes and I relaunch it. Now when I click on a new background it doesn't work and it spikes my CPU a bit. These wallpapers were downloaded off of a forum (downloaded each of them individually) and originally resided on my desktop (icons) but then I moved them to my HD. Thats when the problem started. Is my CPU supposed to spike when my HD is being used (searching for something in finder)?

How do I change the name in the iCloud account details in system preferences? For some reason it has picked up a wrong name and everytime I try to change it it does not memorise the change but keeps defaulting back to the wrong name. It therefore means that everytime I accept an invite for an appointment in Ical it shows the wrong name.

I have a problem with the system preferences. When I open any preference it receives the following message: "You can not open the Dock preferences, because the panel does not work on computers with a PowerPC processor." Except that I do not have Power PC, but Intel!

I have a Macbook Pro and I have been recently changing around my backgrounds including my login background. However, when I changed my background via command in the terminal by switching the defaultdesktop.jpg with another picture in the CoreServices folder, My picture does not show up on the login screen instead it is just a plain blue screen. Is there anyway to restore the original login background settings?because I actually found a program "loginox" that easily changes the login picture however, it will not open because it says I have changed the original background photo.

View 14 Replies View RelatedWhenever I assign shortcut keys to Spaces using the Expose' & Spaces panel in System Preferences, it seems that in a day or two the shortcut keys no longer work and System Preferences shows them as being unassigned. I thought there may be a conflict with another shortcut but there isn't - at least according to the Keyboard & Mouse panel in System Preferences. This happens on both my MBP and my iMac as well as on the PowerMac I recently sold. I've tried other keys and combinations but with the same results. I've also experienced this in all versions of Leopard including the current 10.5.7. I'm using F8 to activate Spaces, Command + Option + Arrow key to switch between Spaces and Command + Option + Number key to switch directly to a Space. Has anyone else experienced this?

I was asked to performed a system update with a reboot which I proceeded to do. Once the reboot was complete I had lost my system time (which had been reset to December 31, 2000 and my background had been replaced with the original generic MAC background. I have been unable to find the source of this issue and I am unsure how to fix this. I was able to change my clock by adjusting the Date & Time Preferences and fix my background image as well, but I am concerned that this is a temporary fix. Has anyone else experienced this with a system update?

One display is connected directly to the mac mini (main screen) and one display is connected through a DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort Converter from Athlona (secondary screen). Yesterday I rebooted the machine and since the reboot I cannot change my main screens desktop background. I tried every solution from several fora on the net, but did not succeed to change it. I only have a solid gray colored background. Normally, when you select a wallpaper, it instantly changes the background. Now it doesn't. You can see it change in the "Desktop & Screensaver" menu, but nothing happens in real. Changing the background of the secondary screen is no problem. When I restart the machine, you can see that the solid gray colored background goes away and the original chosen wallpaper appears, but then closes because I restarted the system. On start-up of the system, you can see the original chosen wallpaper again for a few seconds, while the machine starts applications to open at login, and then suddenly changes again into the solid gray colored background.
