OS X :: Windows Boot Up Selection Screen?

Mar 3, 2010

Ok, so at my university, now, all of the Macs have Snow Leopard installed. One thing I noticed that wasn't there before was a selection screen on after booting up. They use Boot Camp, but for me, I've always had to hold Option after boot up to choose my Windows partition. My school has it real nice, after starting up it lets you click on a picture of either Mac OS X or Windows. Does anyone know if that's something native with Snow Leopard? I haven't gotten around to installing my upgrade, so I'm not sure, but I would really love that startup screen instead of having to hold down Option.

OS X :: How To Make Boot Camp OS Selection Default Boot Screen?

Sep 17, 2009

Is there a way to make the Boot Camp menu the default boot screen, as opposed to holding Alt? This is the latest SL release, if that matters.

I know this is possible in some manner, our networked iMacs all do it; they start up and give the option to boot OS X or Windows, with a countdown to boot the default OS. I'd just like the same thing to happen on my MBP.

MacBook Air :: Special Symbols Locked - Startup Screen With Boot Device Selection

May 25, 2012

I have a weird problem with my MacBook Air. I was browsing the web when I think I hit a wrong keyboard combination. I was trying to select text cmd+a. But a small white window popped up with some text. After that safari started acting weird. Whenever I tried to open a new link it did not simply open the link like usual. But it downloaded it into my download folder. I also noticed that I could only type special symbols.

So I tried to reboot my MacBook Air. Usually it boots right to the login screen. But now it first shows a startup screen where I can select a boot device. So I select macintosh HD and it boots up like normal. But I can still only type weird symbols so I cant login. First I thought maybe my alt key is stuck but it works just fine and I did not do anything with it.

Windows On Mac :: Baffled By Boot Camp - Black Screen

Jul 2, 2007

I've encountered an interesting, if not incredibly frustrating, problem on my Macbook Pro and I was hoping someone might be able to help me diagnose and rectify it. I had installed XP via Boot Camp 1.1 in August successfully and used my XP partition for a few months. Then, one day, when I went to boot into XP, after selecting my XP partition at the startup screen, my computer went to a black screen with no cursor or error message. I had no idea what to do, so I decided to simply delete my partition and create a new one and reinstall Windows. After deleting it and firing up Boot Camp, I encountered the very same black screen when Boot Camp restarted my computer. It would go to the grey startup screen first, but then to a black screen. The XP install disc would seemingly spin up properly, but nothing ever showed on screen. I then tried any number of possible fixes, including zeroing my entire hard disc and reinstalling OS X and Boot Camp (now 1.3), but have had the same result each time. I have begun to suspect that the problem is related to the EFI, but I don't know very much about that sort of things and don't really know how to adjust its settings or reinstall it. I've downloaded the most recent EFI firmware, but when I try to open the file OS X insists that my firmware is already up to date. I've been scouring the internet for the last couple weeks and am yet to come up with a solution.

Windows On Mac :: Screen Became Really Dim / Installed Boot Camp Drivers

May 10, 2008

I have just finished installing Vista Ultimate (64 bit) on my new Mac Pro, and the screen is really dark, and I can't seem to get it any brighter.

My graphics card is the Nvidia 8800gt, I am using an old 23" ACD through the ADC/DVI adaptor.

The screen was nice and bright all throughout the installation, but after I installed the boot camp drivers from the Apple install disc, the screen became really dim. If I open the Nvidia control panel and try and change the brightness from there, the screen stays dim, but just gets really washed out.

The weird thing is, it translates back onto the OS X side. When I restart after being in Vista, the display is still very dim - I have to go in the Displays system preferences and manually change the brightness back up from minimum. Conversely, when I boot into Vista having been in OS X, the screen is initially bright through all the login screens, but then switches back to being dark as soon as I have logged in.

There is probably a really simple solution to this, but as I am completely unfamiliar with Vista, I'm stuffed if I can work it out. Any advice is gratefully received.

Windows On Mac :: Boot Camp Goes To Black Screen With Start-up?

Feb 2, 2009

I have an older MacBook and when I bought it, from a friend, it already had windows running on it. Just the other day I went to restart my computer and all I got want the black screen saying that the computer was turned off wrong and to choose the start up mode. I tried the last known option and nothing happened besides restarting to the same screen. Then I tried the normal mode and that didn't work and safe mode did the same thing, starting back up to the black screen. Is there something that I can do/fix, or does this require some professional.

Windows On Mac :: Boot Camp Installation - Gray Screen - Cd Spinning

Dec 26, 2010

I have a 1st generation macbook pro running snow leopard 10.6. I've been trying to install windows xp, vista, or 7 using bootcamp but for some odd reason i cannot boot into the cd. I put the cd in and made sure the macbook is reading it (which it is because the icon shows up on the desktop) before i hit "start installation". the laptop would restart but it doesnt boot into the cd, it just goes right into the gray screen and stays there while i hear the cd spinning. I've installed windows xp using this method but that was about 4 years ago, for some reason the hard drive died on me so i have to do this whole process over again. I dont recall having this problem either.

Windows On Mac :: Screen Brightness Control Not Linear In Boot Camp

Jun 13, 2009

I bought this c2d macbook pro 15'' in early 2007. Today I installed windows 7 on it (bootcamp 2.1). Everything worked perfect except the screen brightness control. The strongest level is very bright (same as the one in Mac), but the second level is very dim. I remember having this problem back in 2007 when I installed winxp on my mac. Looks like the problem still exists. Anyone here knows how to fix it?

Windows On Mac :: Boot Camp XP: Getting A C000021a System Error - Blue Screen?

Aug 13, 2009

Won't boot up past this screen, this is the first time this has happened. I am fairly certain it is related to an attempt to install SP3 (I had removed it in favor if SP2 to hopefully fix some wireless issues). I noticed when I shut it down last time that it was installing updates, which most certainly included SP3, and then I left the computer. Maybe the install failed? If so, how can I fix this? Any way around other than reverting to a backup? (I think the clone I have of it has SP3 on it)

OS X :: Snow Leopard Stuck In Boot Screen - Windows Boots Fine

Mar 8, 2010

So as the title explains, since last Friday I've been trying to figure out why my Macbook Pro started getting stuck on the boot screen with the spinning gear. Sometimes a progress bar appear and it fills like 1/20th of the way and goes back to the spinning gear. However, if I boot into Windows 7, it works fine. I tried using the Snow Leopard install disk to get into disk utility and it won't even boot from cd (For reference, I tried the hold-c command to boot into the cd). The I tried resetting the PRAM, the SMC reset and the fsk thing, no bananas. I have this Macbook Pro since June 2009. I'm shot of ideas, if you guys have no idea what's wrong its a call to Apple, or a meeting with a "Genius" ugh.

MacBook Pro :: Won't Boot (question Mark Folder) After Blue Screen On Windows Bootcamp

Feb 9, 2012

So, I was on windows, using bootcamp, and I was creating partitions on a pen drive with it, and then it asks me that it needs to restart to apply changes.

But then, while restarting, a blue screen occurred (**** windows).... And I forced the shutdown pressing the power key.

Then, I simply turned the MacBook on, trying to boot on my snow leopard and I got a flashing folder with a question mark on it. Now I can't access any partitions on it, if I press option key on startup I get a blank window!

I tried to reset PRAM, repair the MacOs partition using the snow leopard DVD (it shows up fine, along with windows partition and EFI partition), and I still don't get my startup disk showing up...

Windows On Mac :: Possibly Fatal Boot Camp Error / Unable To Boot Windows

Jul 14, 2009

In my attempt to install Windows XP via Boot Camp, I accidentally inserted an SP1 disc instead of the SP2 disc that I have. The installation proceeded to the point where it does for most who attempt this: the screen where you are prompted to press ENTER. I could not proceed and therefore restarted the iMac and held down the mouse button upon start-up to remove the CD.

HERE IS THE PROBLEM:I can not boot into OS X because the keyboard shortcuts (those that might allow me to select which partition to boot from and/or reset PRAM) seem to be disabled. Instead, a reboot always ends at a black screen with a blinking DOS-esque cursor, or the prompt: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key."

I have attempted inserting my SP2 disc at this point, to no avail. My keyboard seems to be disabled, as if the SP1 install proceeded just enough to establish itself as the boot drive without drivers for the keyboard. I've tried using all 3 USB ports, disconnecting other USB devices. Oddly, my bluetooth mouse works to eject the CD on reboot...

Dec 25, 2008

This is the 1st time i got a Mac , i bought a black Macbook 2.4GHz some days ago .

Only 1 prob is when restarting , i have to wait too long for the Windows to log on , i think about 1min with the black screen.

And if i want to boot in Mac OS , i have to push down the D button or the Alt, it takes quite a long time too .

So do you guys have any solution to this problem ? I want to get rid of the waiting time, way too much.

And do you know how to make my Macbook jump right in the choosing section when it starts ? ( so that i dont have to push down any button when it starts )

Have the new 15" MBP with i7 Processor. I had another MBP with a 7200RPM drive and installed drive in the new i7 Mac. Computer was working fine until I installed Windows via Boot Camp. I can't boot to the Mac Partition any more, the partition is there but when you try to boot to it you just see the Apple logo and NO circle. I cannot boot to the install CDs or a bootable external drive. Windows On Mac :: Want To Boot Through Both Boot Camp Or Parallels?

Jul 20, 2009

I just installed Windows XP to a Boot Camp Partition on my MBP. However, rebooting is a hassle and naturally I want to avoid doing such as often as possible. I think running Parallels Desktop would suit my needs quite well. But here's the catch: I want to be able to use one partition to serve both of those needs. In other words I want have the option of booting through both Boot Camp or Parallels.

How would I go about doing this? I already have a XP installed via Boot Camp. So if there is a method where I don't have to reinstall, great, but I am fine with deleting stuff.

Mac Pro :: Stuck At Gray Boot Screen - Boot XP

Apr 27, 2008

trying to boot in Leopard my Mac Pro will get the the gray loading screen with the "loading circle" and just sit there forever. Than after a bit it will just stop and the whole computer can shut itself down. I just installed the 8800gt upgrade kit last week, and have had no problems at all for the past week. The only thing that changed that may be related is the 8800GT XP Driver. I installed the latest beta driver for it under XP in boot camp because it wasn't working properly with the default boot camp drivers. So I can correctly boot in the XP via boot camp, but trying to boot in Leopard it just hangs at the gray loading screen.

Actually I have some sort of annoyance with boot camp. It works as it's intended (with windows 7, which is a miracle, because everyone complains about that combination). But whenever I boot up and press "alt" to select the hard drive i want to boot, it always shows Windows. Can i change it for something else? and, how can I do it? Both of my partitions have names of their own... they're not generic... but still, they are not working, what can I do??
