I have a unibody Macbook Pro and I installed windows 7 64bit with bootcamp and one thing that i noticed is that windows 7 puts my macbook to sleep when I close the lid about 10 seconds faster than Snow Leopard does.
Snow Leopard takes about 10 to 15 seconds to put it to sleep and Windows take 2 to 5 seconds. Is this normal? It'd be funny if windows can do things faster than mac can with apple hardware.
I was just wondering what you guys think about this. I have both installed on my i5 Macbook Pro, and it seems that my Windows 7 installation is much snappier, especially in terms of playing video, opening and closing apps, etc, than my Snow Leopard installation is. (I installed the latest NVidia video drivers from laptop2go.) Games of course are much faster - Civ 4 is faster on Windows, but videos seem more vibrant as well.
Is it just me or have other people also noticed this?
only the sleep button under the apple logo puts the hard drive to sleep it doesn't do it automatically though energy saver and a timed sleep?

where the *#$& does one change this setting? Right now, if I close the laptop, it goes to sleep. This is bad - for presentations, running iTunes at home... But I can not find where to change this - I've been through every section of Pref's.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Intel iMac (Late 2008, aluminum display, 24", 2GB RAM) has a problem where, when using the left arrow key on the desktop or to go back a space when renaming something in the Finder, it will put the computer to sleep. All other applications have no problem with the key. I've looked at all the usual culprits (keyboard shortcuts, preferences) and I can't find a reason. The only thing I can glean is that it is directly connected to the menu at the top, as the lights up right before the computer goes to sleep.

Before some days I noticed that Snow Leopard installed its update 10.6.4.
Well no big problem but I have a sense that the time remaining without using AC adapter has slightly fell. Before, using only firefox for example I could see about 6 hours remaining (some minutes after powering on my mac). Now it hardly shows about 4+.
Has any other noticed that?
Okay I know this is about Windows, but I think I'll post it under the Mac OS X forum as the trouble I have is that I think my Leopard side of things is slower than my Windows side.
I recently had XP installed via Boot Camp on my MBP, and it seems to me that XP just does things pretty quickly. Firefox and MSN messenger launches very quickly and are very snappy. It also takes little to no time for XP to be responsive as it enters the desktop.
On the other hand, it takes quite a bit of time for Leopard to be usable as the desktop loads. The dock comes up, the toolbar takes a while to load, and the Airport, Volume, Date/Time etc icons take some more time to completely load. Then, when I launch OS X's equivalent of IM and browser apps (Adium and Firefox), they take some time to open, especially Firefox which can bounce for more than 8 times before launching.
I'm just wondering if XP is just snappier because it is more lightweight than Leopard? Or is it an anomaly and there are ways for me to speed up Leopard? Of course, I think that the fact that my Leopard partition dates back to about 3 years ago compared to a relatively fresh install of Windows will affect things, but the speed difference is very significant.
Also, OS X is set to the wrong time when I return to it from Windows, and it takes a good minute before it automatically adjusts itself, while Windows is always the right time. My Apple Wireless Keyboard is also usable from the get go in Windows, while it takes very long for OS X to start to use it.
Last night I installed the new Snow Leopard hoping to see an improvement in some of the programs I use (Photoshop, LR, Flash, AE etc�) but I don�t think any of these programs other than Safari, Finder and all those built-in applications in OSX benefited from this new 64-bit code, at least I haven�t seen any improvements in fact I went and checked the Activity Monitor and I don�t see the 64-bit in any of these programs.
Was this supposed to benefit all programs speed wise or the program itself should be 64-bit compatible?

The new Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac has been shown on average to run 40 percent faster than last year's edition, according to people familiar with the matter. Those same people said that the upgrade -- expected to retail for the same $79.99 price as its predecessor -- will also feature Windows boot times that are roughly two times faster than version 3.1 of its primary competitor: VMWare Fusion.
VMware and Parallels have gone head to head in the virtualization market since 2008, when the Fusion product was first introduced. Parallels has existed since 2006, and both products retail for an identical prices. In a recent study, Parallels 5 was already found to be 30 percent faster on average than VMware Fusion 3.
Parallels 6 is also expected to showcase tighter integration with its users' natural environment, adopting support for the Mac OS X's keyboard shortcuts, Spotlight search engine, and Expose windows management features. Similarly, the upgrade will offer the option to automatically apply a Mac's parental controls to their corresponding Windows applications, according to those familiar with the product.

I remember a rumor from a while ago that Snow Leopard will run up to twice the speed of Leopard, and some older Macs that couldn't run Leopard will now be able to run Snow Leopard.
Is this still true?
My MacBook Pro will not go to sleep after installing Snow Leopard. It WILL go to sleep if I close the lid; however, if I have it sit open for 15 minutes, it won't go to sleep. It attempts to sleep, but instead the screen will just go black for less than a second. It's just like a flash of black, and then the screen goes back to normal. It simply won't sleep.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having a serious issue with my MacBook since upgrading to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. My MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, 2.4 GHz) will not go to sleep automatically anymore. If I select "Sleep" from the Apple menu it will sleep fine. However, it will not sleep according to my Energy Saver preference pane which says sleep at 1 min each (Display and Computer). Another thing to keep in mind is that my display sleeps perfectly normally. However, the computer itself will not sleep.
Here are the things that I have tried so far:
Reinstall 10.6.2 combo updater
Remove Energy Saver preferences and entire System Configuration folder
Made sure that no hardware or software is interrupting sleep
Reset PRAM and SMC
Repaired Disk Permissions
Archive and Install
I am running Mac OS X 10.6.2 with ALL updates and firmware installed.
Since installing Snow Leopard, I have noticed that my Mac will wake randomly. It does not happen all the time, but it does a lot. I have tried to reset the PRAM and it did not help. The "Wake for network access" option in Energy Saver is unchecked. Any ideas?

Is this the sound of a problem fan or something on my motherboard or something?

View 2 Replies View RelatedLate 2008 MacBook, online via WiFi. Since upgrading to 10.6, about 50% of the time I wake the lappy, apps cannot resolve hostnames. Ping by IP and dig to resolve names works on the command line. However, no apps can get DNS. Safari and Firefox report "offline" mode. Anyone else see this? A reboot is the only fix I've found, and that's a pain.

It sleeps when activated from the Apple Menu but not when set to sleep in Energy Saver Preference Pane. The screen dims, goes black but the computer does not seem to sleep nor does the hard drive spin down. Anyone else having a problem like this? It was working fine in Leopard (just noticed this problem now, but have had Snow Leopard installed for a couple of weeks and never noticed it)
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently upgrade my leopard to snow leopard and when ever i put the computer to sleep it takes quite a while for it to actually go into sleep mode.
Now I tried pmset with no success like so: sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
Why does snow leopard take so long to go to sleep, does anyone else have this issue? Is there anything else i could try to fix it. It says hibernatemode is 0 in pmset info table.
It takes 10.6.1 35 seconds to go to sleep. Anyone else having issues like this? It takes in about a second. I could shutdown faster than it takes to sleep but damn.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAgain--my iMac desktop computer (10.8.6) is refusing to go to sleep, as it usually does automatically if left alone for a short time. Even when put to sleep manually, it pops on again by itself. Wasting a lot of electricity!

I searched the forum, but saw a lot of sleep issues. None quite like mine. I have a MBP 13" bought in June. When I close the lid, it goes to sleep just fine. When I open it, I can hear it start up. The sleep light becomes illuminated, but then about 5 seconds later goes back to sleep.I have tried to hold the power button and shut the computer down, and start it back up. When it starts up, it shows the white screen with the apple logo, then goes blue, and is about to load the log-on screen, and goes back to sleep. I have already tried an archive and install, and a erase and install. Neither worked.Occassionally it will start back up if I just wait 20-30 minutes. Sorry about the long log, but I do not know what information is needed. I tried to wake from sleep around 1:27 in the logs, and it actually let me boot up and log on around 1:53. To give you an idea of what I was doing to cause these
logs.
Whenever my battery gets drained, my MacBook Pro turns off as if the battery was pulled out, I lose all my work when this happens.This started after I installed Snow Leopard, before, it would just go to sleep and my work is safe.

I've not been able to find out any more info about this bug outside of the Apple support forums so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. The original thread in the Apple forums dates back to early September so it looks like the 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 updates didn't address it. Is it a very rare bug I wonder?
