So i bought this new 500GB external HD but whenever i tried to put my files in it from my mac it wont allow me and say, "This item could not be moved because [harddrive] cannot be modified." however if i connect it to my windows it works fine.
P.S just one stupid question, why would a 500GB HD has less capacity such as 470 or so; and sometimes 8GB USB will only have 7.5 G etc.
I am not very computer savvy, and new to your community here. (also I apologize if this is posted in the wrong forum. this one seemed the most logical, but I wasn't sure.)
Just bought an external harddrive for my MacBook, and my hope was to move my itunes library, photos, and a few essential documents to the external.
what is the easiest way to do this?
Also, after I have everything backed up, I was planning on restoring the computer to factory settings, and enjoy it being "like new" with all my content on harddrive. If I did this, would I still be able to seamless access all the stuff on the external, such as my itunes library? How would this work? Is it even a good idea to restore the computer?
I use my external harddrive for Time Machine on OSX. I also happened to put other files on there too. But once I run bootcamp, it seems that Windows cannot recognize harddrive. Is that normal? And is there a way for me to reach the files in Windows?
View 8 Replies View Relatedi use my desktop for movies and creating files. but i use my laptop more often and bring it with me. so i bought an external hard drive to save all the movies and stuff off the PC. and then play them on my mac and my ps3.

Unable to Use TIme Machine to backup a new Western Dig external 1 TB drive. It is connected through an adaptor to my Firewire 800 using a Firewire 400 with adaptor. I cant dismount the drive to reformat it to MAC using disk format utility.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am a rookie in Mac. I have a lot of multimedia which I store on external harddrives. Recently I have experienced my iMac freezing on me, specially when I am accessing the harddrives using my frontrow application. Eventually I got a database error when receiving mail to my Entourage. It was suggested that I repair permissions using the disk utility. This I did, however it never actually repairs anything, it just lists the stuff where the permissions differ. Anyway, straight after I 'repaired' permissions, my harddrive showed empty. No files left!!! 1TB data gone .
the way I understand it, it is a possibility that the file that lists the addresses of all the files on the disk may be the one that was wiped. I am hoping the data is still there and that someone has a nifty tool that will sniff it out for me.
I bought an Iomega Prestige 1TB external harddrive a couple months ago with it running off my Macbook Pro.
I just flew down home for spring break, leaving my Macbook Pro charger at school. However, I do have the harddrive with all my backed up files. The problem is, my PC laptop (Dell, Windows XP) does not recognizes it. When I plug in the harddrive and turn it on, the computer recognizes that there is something plugged in (it gives me the option to safely remove hardware), but there is no sign of the drive anywhere.
Is there anyway my PC can read/recognize it?
I recently bought an external harddrive and its been working properly for about 2 weeks now. however, i accidently moved my iBook G4 and my external harddrive that was connected disconnected from the Mac. the error message of "please do not remove harddrive before ejecting..." popped up and since then it has not been working properly. i've read many articles and forums and nothing seems to be suited for my situation. it is a 400GB WD portable external harddrive and it plugs/runs by the USB port. the disk utility says when i try to repair disk:
"Disk Utility stopped repairing My Passport because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit"
and i've checked the finder preferences and everything is what it is suppose to be. am i going to have to but that diskwarrior program in order to fix this? seems like there should be an easier, less expensive, way.
I have an iomega external HD. When ever I try to transfer files from my mac internal HD I get the message "the Item could not be moved because "iomega HDD" cannot be modified." This HD works fine with windows, but is doesn't seem compatible with my mac. Any way to fix?
View 4 Replies View RelatedQuick question. I have an imac running leapord. I also bought an external seagate harddrive to use with time machine. It was working fine for about a month then my mac stopped recognizing the external drive. Any thoughts on what has happened or did I just end up with a faulty external drive?
View 17 Replies View RelatedJust about to format my external harddrive as its read only at the moment (only adjustable on a Windows machine).
I've opened disk utility and chosen my external HDD from there... my question is, which format do I use? Theres about four appearing:
Mac OS Extended (case sensitive)
Mac OS Extended (case sensitive, journaledd)
Mac OS Extended
Mac OS Extended (journaled)
Which one do I choose and why?
Ive just realised my BT homehub wireless router has a USB port, which has rather excited me as it opens up the possibility of freeing up a USB port on my MacBook, which is currently occupied by my Lacie external hardrive.
I hoped it be as simple as plugging the drive into the routers usb port and watching it pop up in finder. Alas not so. Ive plugged the drive in, but nothings showing up in OS X. What am I doing wrong?
I'm trying to format my external harddrive with disk utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but it keeps coming up with this error.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an iBook G4 (1.42 ghz, 1gb - Leopard 10.5.6). I have a usb hub which has a few things plugged in (500 gb HD, mouse, ipod).
I bought a 320 gb portable hard drive. It is not recongized either through the hub or directly into either USB 2.0 ports.
I also have a G4 iMac 700 mhz. running Tiger. It does recognize the hard drive, as does my Intel iMac at work, and my friends Lenovo laptop.
My mac won't read my external harddrive's videos that I took with my Nikon. Half the videos won't play, and those are .avi files.WHY won't they play anymore and how can i retrieve them?
View 1 Replies View Relatedmy mac book pro is not recognizing my WD 500 GB external hardrive. I checked and double checked to make sure the external was mac compatible before I bought : and it was. It also is not recongizing an WD external hardrive I borrowed from a co-worker. Here is what I have done and checked so far.
- I checked to see if the externals worked on other Mac Pros( just to double check mac compatibility)- they showed up on on 4 different Mac books.
- I checked to see if there was something wrong my usb ports. So I incerted my 4 GB flash drive in the USB port, and then my co-workers 4GB Flashdrive- My computer recognized both the devices.
- My computer was very full ( that is why I bought a bigger hardrive to back up my files) so I thought maybe there just wasnted even enough free space for my computer to recongize the devices. So I freed up 70GB of hardrive space on my mac book. - still nothing.
- I also checked to make sure I had the suggested software updates to run the drive, before I bought it.

Today i was finishing a 7min HD Video Project for my class, on a mac tower, when i got the I/O error message while exporting it. It got worse from there. Untill today i have had no problem viewing/opening/editing files from my harddrive.
Now, i cant even open the FCP project. It says final cut pro quit unexpectedly while using the kgcore plug-inWhen i try to watch a quicktime file, the movie will play for a few seconds, then freeze and force quit.I try to copy any file to my desktop and it says The Finder cant complete the operation because some data in(filename) cant be read or written. (Error code -36)
I ran disk utility to verify the disk, and it says that everything appeared ok.I also ran disk repair, and it also said nothing was wrong with the harddrive.I have tried to do all of these things on 4 different computers today, 3 towers and a Mac Mini. All the same results, down to the exact second and mb of the attempted transfers and watches.
when i try to copy it says The item “Batman Arkham Asylum” can’t be copied because it is too large for the volume's format

I have a hard drive that is set to 'read only' and is formatted as NTFS. How can I change this so that I can save files to the disk, without reformattin and losing everything on the drive?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI feel incredibly dumb but can you buy something to put inside an ibook (or any laptop for that matter) to give you more space to save things? or do you have to buy an external drive? I can see lots of info about memory upgrading (which makes your computer more efficient yeah?) but nothing about this, is this because it's so obvious that I should know?
Broken harddrive, dont wanna get a new internal one, I need to boot from external firewire.
View 5 Replies View RelatedProblem: I have a half-terabyte external harddrive by western digital. It's been working for about a year now, no problems ever. it's basically halfway filled with movies and music and stuff; however, recently, it's not being recognized by my macbook. It uses a mini USB to USB cable. I switched the cables and it still didn't come up.
When I plug it into the AC it lights up and looks like its searching to 'talk' with my macbook. It has always done this, then the light would become solid and it would show up on my desktop. I tried it on different computers as well and it still doesn't actually show up. All the computers I've tried notify me that a drive has been connected, but not recognized. I really really need it to be recognized or else I lost A LOT of information.
I went to upload a file to Mediafire, and when it redirected me to Finder, my hard drive was the default folder to pick the files from. However, it had a red minus sign on it and I have no clue what that means.
My father just sent me a DiskGo Edge external harddrive (used by him but only for some email files, no damage I know of) and it is not at all recognized by my computer, won't show up in disk utility or anything- it also won't show on my school's computers which are also macs. I've tried thier website troubleshooting page and no luck there. It did work on a PC before. There are two blue lights on it, and altough two are on when the power outlet is plugged in, only one is on when i plug the USB in my macbook. It's clearly the external itself since it hasnt shown on 2 computers-- but how do I get it to be recognized?
View 3 Replies View Relatedso i just got the Airport Express Base Station so i can connect my WD external HD (i don't like to plug it directly into my laptop...) i also moved my iphoto library file to the external HD. why is iPhoto so slow to start up and do pretty much anything? i thought in this way i could save my internal SSD from clutter, but accessing the iphoto library from the external is driving me mad with its slowness.
