OS X :: What Is It That Actually Causes A Computer To Slow Down

Jun 11, 2009

I've spent today copying all my apps and files from my 2yr old 2.5GHz MBP onto my new 2.66GHz UMBP. Even with them essentially holding the same data, the new one is a lot quicker at opening apps etc.

As a test, I timed the start-up:

Old MBP: 1m12s

New MBP: 29s

I remember a time when my old one booted up just as quickly! So, what is it that will undoubtedly cause my new one to gradually slow down?

OS X :: Internet Slowness Or The Computer Being Slow?

Dec 11, 2010

Is there a way to tell which one is slow, if anything is going slow?

I have an extremely old PC which is normally ok for most things, but gets bogged down if I am doing too many things.

I was so annoyed with our national real estate site after they changed the format that I wrote a letter once a long time ago.. and I was ready to let them have it again, listing all the reasons why it is so bad and so much worse than the original.

Today for the first time, I accessed the site (mls.ca) using my new iMac. It was like lightening speed, comparatively speaking.

Wow, suddenly I knew why the mls people hadn't changed their new format.

But then I started going to other sites.. like airmiles.ca for example, and it was slow as heck... and stalling.. etc.

How would I be able to tell whether it is an internet slowness or the computer being slow?

Software :: Computer Is Still (somehow) Usable But Overall Very Slow.?

Jun 22, 2007

For the past week I have been having a lot of problems with iCal and Syncserver. .Mac syncing has been hit and miss. Syncserver continually takes up 99% of the CPU and iCal hangs and is very slow. The computer is still (somehow) usable but overall very slow.

I have tried the following:

1. Restarts

2. Dump iCal plist files.

3. Turned off .Mac syncing

4. Trashed all calendars

5. Used syncrospector to reset syncservices.

6. Dumped syncservices folder.

Does anybody have an idea of what is going on, and what I can do?

MacBook Pro :: Computer Is Running Very Slow, Add More Ram?

Mar 5, 2012

I have been trying to get certificates from our AD PKI to our Mac Laptops for some time now under 10.6 so they can authenticate WPA2-Enterprise to our Cisco ACS wireless and Juniper SSL VPN.Since then working with Apple I was told to move to trying this under 10.7 with Profile Manager.I have set up the Windows 2008 r2 NDES server to accept the SCEP requests from the payload that Profile Manager distributes to the 10.7 clients.

After a lot of troubleshooting and work over a few weeks all is working well now. The test users can auth to wireless and the VPN.However - The cert that is returned to the user's login keychain for the client is exportable, even though we mark it as non-exportable in the certificate request template.I have been told that this is expected behavior by keychain when it requests a certificate via SCEP.

So I am looking for two things:Really?? You cannot get a cert in there as non-exportable? andDoes anyone know if this is a defect in Keychain or SCEP?The only other workaround I can find is to then request the cert, and from the client (an admin as we dont want the user to have the exportable private key) exports the cert, deletes it from keychain and then re-imports it with the import -x flag so it cannot be exported. This obviously doesnt scale and requires an admin to touch every laptop.

Intel Mac :: Computer Is Running Very Slow?

Apr 2, 2012

My computer is running very slow.  Beach ball all the time. I have about 35mb hard drive free space and 4 MB RAM.  I monitor with Activity Monitor.  Everytime I open a program, like Safari, Adobe, Activity Monitor shows they use up to 99% CPU.  It goes downafter a little while to a small perecntage, until I try to do something with them.  Then many times, it will jump back up to high %CPU and give me the beachball and run very slow.  This is a new thing.  Does anyone know what may be the problem with my computer?

MacBook Pro :: Old Files Transfer Slow Down New Computer?

Nov 14, 2010

So it seems that after a few months our computers, yes even our macs, slow down a bit. I just purchased a new macbook pro and am wondering on the best route to take as I transfer files from my old macbook to the new pro. I've read about doing it from a TimeMachine backup as well as just using the migration assistant. But, will moving my files slow down my new computer and make it act like an "old computer" since it will have basically all of the old files?

Software :: Web Browsing Is Slow And Computer Hangs?

Sep 27, 2009

I've had my iMac for about a year, and since I first bought it, it hangs on at least 25% of the web page transitions, sometimes for as long as 20 or 30 seconds. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and it's become even worse. Doesn't matter if I use Safari or Firefox. Also, hanging affects my widgets (such as the weather Radar), but I never lose connection to Skype or Messenger. I've tried resetting both browsers, but I don't think it's a browser issue. It's connected via cable, not wireless. Also, I have my work laptop always connected at home and never have a problem with connectivity. I've lugged my computer to the Apple store.

OS X :: Why Does A Full Network Drive Slow Down The Entire Computer?

Oct 26, 2010

I know how to fix this problem, I was just wondering if anyone knows WHY it happens.

I have a network drive that I use on my iMac and every time it's nearly full, my WHOLE machine becomes unusably slow. I mean, even opening a finder window can take up to a minute. Just deleting a couple of files off the network drive will fix the problem. Unfortunately, it can take up to an hour just to delete a file because everything is so slow, including the actually deleting of the file.

I don't have an system files on the drive, just a bunch of video files and personal documents.

I was just curious why the network drive being slow would impact the whole system? It just seems weird to me.

OS X :: Hard Drive Dominating Computer / Systems Often Gets Slow

Apr 27, 2009

Here's my best try yet in describing it:My hard drive seems to be dominating my computing.Frequently, when trying to perform simple functions, I can hear my hard drive spinning often accompanied by a spinning beach ball. It makes my computing sluggish for a good handful of moments, then it is back to being smooth.

I can only compare it to times when i've worked on a machine that doesn't have enough RAM for everything I'm trying to do.The most recent occurrence- a few moments ago- was when I simply had a browser window open and my system profiler- there is 8 gigs of RAM in here.

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Clicking - Computer Slow Down

Jul 23, 2009

Recently my new unibody 17" macbook pro start to act a little weird. It started with regular "clicks" from the hard-drive. I thought the hard-drive is just parking to safe energy and didn't saw any harm in it. But now my computer start to slow down terrible in many occasions or crash. I noticed that when this happened (the crash or the slow down) I often hear the hard-drive clicking and/or bouncing. Is this the sign of a hard-drive that will die soon? or can there an other reason be the cause of this behavior?

Recently my computer has started to run slowly in things like games and the only time that it runs normaly is when I restart my computer and then it gets slow again after about 5 min. My computer's cpu has been running at about 77-87 deggres celcius. Is that the normal running temps of a 2010 13-inch macbook pro? I have asked on some other places and they have said that it is dust in my comp that is heating the cpu up and therefore making it run slower.

Intel Mac :: Computer Goes Slow When Running SketchUp/ Layout

Jun 16, 2012

I'm using an iMac and find it difficult when running SketchUp/ Layout.  It takes up to 5 to 6 mins to load a Layout file or it re-calculate and halt every few minutes when I am using SketchUp.  While waiting for it's re-calculation or loading up, I can still use other softwares normally.

I wonder if it is one of the following problems: -

1. The softwares use massive RAM that my computer don't have? if yes, how can I allocate more RAM for these 2 softwares?

2. My computer is not powerful enough to run rendering softwares, like SketchUp/ Layout?

The following is the spec of my computer, Intel Core i3, 3.06 GHz.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
