OS X :: TM Demands More Space Than Neccessary

Oct 21, 2009

i backed up my hd via tm, now the backup fails, because tm says there's only 157gb free but it needs 350gb.the weird thing is, after i did the initial backup i didn't add 157 gb, so there should be enough free space and tm is supposed to delete backups if there's not enough space anymore.

i had this once some time back, i resized my tm hd and it backed up my whole hd, even though i had already backups.is the incremental backup technology faulty, or what?

Windows On Mac :: Bootcamp Demands OSX Journaled Extended?

Oct 12, 2008

Awhile back I made a Vista partition, shortly after I deleted the partition. I now want to make a new partition, but when I go through bootcamp to allocate space, it gives me an error saying i need to have a "Single Mac OSX Journal Extended drive.

The problem is, my drive shows up as Journal Extended. I would really like to not have to reformat my drive, as I do not have the CD's for all of my programs. Is there any way around this? I do have an external HD if necessary.

OS X :: Memory Space Disappearing / Disk Space Reduces While Streaming Videos

Dec 2, 2009

I have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.

I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband.

Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?

Cheers

MacBook Pro :: Time Machine Backup Fails Due To Lack Of Space, Although Plenty Of Space Available On External Drive?

Mar 14, 2012

I've bought a 1 TB iomega ego mac edition II external fire wire drive. Once connected it asked whether i want to create a password and whether i want my data encrypted, to which i answered yes. Then a time machine backup started and failed after backing up 5.25 GB out of 39 GB of my data with the following error: "The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup". When i look at time machine it shows there is 994.29 GB available on iomega ego drive. The drive then went into: "Encrypting Backup Disk" message and it takes forever.

MacBook Pro :: Disappearing HDD Space With Time / Less Space Showing In Finder

Dec 28, 2010

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I have the MacBook Pro 2010 13" and recently I've noticed my disc space is slowly decreasing with use.

Im not downloading files or anything, but today I lost around 600 MB of space, I just kept opening my Finder to discover less and less disc space each time.

Is this normal or do I have a problem, this is the first time I've noticed it in the month and a half I've owned the machine.

Intel Mac :: HD Space Disappearing And Missing 100 GB Of Hard Disk Space?

Mar 21, 2012

Can anyone explain to me why, on my iMac's 500GB hard drive, the displayed size of the only 4 items on it is 207GB, that the info box on the HD itself says 393GB used?  Unless I failed grade 1 math, 500GB - 207GB = 293GB, right?  So where's the missing ~100GB?  That's a lot of space I know I haven't filled up.

Just quite surprised and then not at the same time that my 11.6 has just 46gbs after a fresh install of leopard. Can't fit anything on there! Looking at my migration assistant, I won't be able to transfer a lot of my applications over. Anyone who wants to do some video work, bootcamping, or photoshopping/editing shouldn't even look at a 64gb. An ultimate 11" seems to be a must for the harddrive space and the 4gb of ram.

OS X :: Skipped Erase Free Space, No Space On HD?

Apr 23, 2009

I managed to interrupt the computer when I selected the "Erase Free Space" option. I had 0GB left on the computer and had to cancel almost all of the applications. I Googled and found that /var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems should locate the file when entered in Terminal, but whenever I try that, it just says "Permission denied." It only asked for a password once, and when I tried entering it, it said that there was no such file. I located a few other temporary files and deleted those, and also tried making empty folders on the desktop to empty the trash. It freed up 6.7 GB, but there's still a lot of space missing. I'm not sure what else to try or how to get the space back.

OS X :: Time Machine Eating Disk Space / Eat GB's Of Hard Disk Space While Preparing Backup

Dec 11, 2009

whenever I run Time Machine on my PowerBook G4 (1.5 Ghz / 1Gb RAM / OSX 10.5.8) it will eat up GB's of hard disk space while 'preparing the backup'. After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. Does Time Machine use the space to generate some temporary files? Any ideas how I can get my disk space back

Applications :: No Disk Space After Failed Disk Utility Erase Free Space?

Dec 15, 2010

I'm having a pretty serious problem. I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.

The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.

If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.

I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.

OS X :: No Free Space - Erase Free Space Interrupted

Mar 20, 2009

Yesterday I apparently interrupted Disk Utility when it was erasing free space, which was far bigger than the used space on my beloved black Macbook. Apparently the free space, because the program was interrupted, is seen as one honking big file.

This morning, the disk utility tells me that I have zero free space. Verify says I do not need repair. I checked because of all my sudden problems (I am unable to save anything to the laptop, unable to cut-and-paste . . . and unable to erase free space again since there officially isn't any, etc.).

Trash is empty.

I tried (based on advice in another thread) to reboot with the installation disk so as to use its disk utility program, but the installation disk menu offers "install" etc. but not (as far as I can tell) just access to its disk utility.

I plugged in my Timemachine external drive [WD MyBook], but the most recent "save" there has the "restore" button greyed out. That's scary.

I'm willing to do a complete re-install if necessary, but I hope that one of you has a simpler solution that will simply get my free space back.

OS X :: What's Using My HDD Space

Mar 11, 2009

I have a 320GB hard drive installed on my uni Macbook that's only reading 19GB free. This is after setting aside 45GB for Boot Camp, installing iLife 09', and putting 102GB worth of music onto the harddrive and into iTunes.

Does this make sense? That doesn't seem like nearly enough stuff to take up that much space. Lets see:

45GB for Windows

102GB for music folders

25GB (roughly?) for OSX, Office, iLife 09', standard pre-installed OSX programs.

Shouldn't I have about 125GB (more or less) of free space? What could be the problem? Is there a way to see which folders or programs are using up the most space on my harddrive? Does iTunes duplicate the songs you import, thus doubling the amount of space my music takes up?

OS X :: How Much Space After SL?

Sep 15, 2009

This is more of a general interest topic than a help inquiry. I just installed Snow Leopard last night on my 2.8 GHz 15" uMBP and as per the promise that apple made me I did experience some freed up hard disk space. Apple said around 7 GB, I got around 36.26 GB back (yes, you are reading that correctly 36 freaking GB). I was just wondering what everyone else had seen with the upgrade? Has anyone seen more than this, because I was quite literally flabbergasted at the amount of recovered space. What do you think? I don't know what was taken away but I know I'm happy with the extra space.

OS X :: Want To Duplicate DVD - Not Enough Space

Oct 21, 2009

Not sure that this is a Snow Leopard issue, since I never tried this with earlier OS versions but here goes. OS10.6.1, MacBook Pro. Wanted to duplicate a DVD - not a commercial one but one made by my community organization who had told me it was not blocked in any way and I could copy it. Used " Get Info " to find size, which showed as 1.39 GB, and knew from watching the disc that it ran about 30 minutes.

Bought some Memorex discs at OfficeMax rated " 4.75 GB data, 120 Minutes Video 1-16x speed ".
Opened Disc Utility and followed the instructions, selecting " Read only ". When I was asked , I inserted a blank disc but got a message saying the disc did not have enough space. So, I re-did everything but selected " Compressed" instead of " Read only", but again got the message that the disc I inserted didn't have enough space to copy what I wanted. Tried a different blank disc from the pack I had bought, same result.

OS X :: Something Keeps Eating Up My HDD Space?

Aug 25, 2010

I've got a problem that is really getting on my nerves now and I have no idea what is causing it.

Basically I will have switched on my MBP with around 2-3GB of HDD space free, and after working on it for around 2-3 hours with applications that shouldn't demand any space whatsoever (Firefox, Safari, Preview), I get that little OS X error that tells me I have limited space left.

As I mentioned before I have no idea why this is happening. Has anyone experienced anything similar, as I'm desperate for a solution. I can't keep deleting important personal files every few hours in order to keep the system running.

MacBook Pro :: Where Did All Space Go

I have a Intel 80GB SSD as my boot drive and it is almost full. I have been very diligent in not installing too many applications / items on my boot drive (and use the 250GB in the optibay for those things). I check to see the sizes of the folders on the SSD and the total of all folders is about 35GB. Without a TRIM command, is the only way to reclaim the space is to do a backup on the SSD and wipe it clean and then restore? That is the only thing I can think of since we do not have trim in OSX.

OS X :: Using Alu MB And Disk Space?

Nov 30, 2008

I recently bought a new Aluminum Macbook (2.4Ghz) and I'm having some issues regarding HD space. To be more specific, when I'm downloading torrents, I usually get the message that I need to free up space on my startup disk.

This makes no sense to me because I have 200G+ of available space. I think this issue may have something to do with system maintenance, but I'm not sure what. Any ideas? Keep in mind that I'm using utorrent beta, so that may have something to do with it.

I'm not sure what it means to clear user cache or any of that nonsense, so can someone please fill me in on what I should do to keep my machine running smooth?

There is only 3GB space left. I've gone through every application and utility and document and every folder (document, movie, etc.) and the largest space-hogging folder is iTunes which uses 15GB because of the music. I can't find any singular folder that uses any sizeable HD space. I recently loaded Tiger so I don't know if Tiger uses the rest of the space or if it's just a combo of all the other applications.
