OS X :: Sync Server Failing Since 10.5.7?
May 18, 2009
What's worse is the fact that the whole system slows down and gets incredibly sluggish. Not to mention MobileMe syncing now doesn't work - my icon for it now looks like this: Whilst the system was running sluggish I had a look at Activity Monitor and I guess this may have something to do with it

After waiting sometime for the refresh, I plunged to buying a 17" MBP. Now I'd assumed all along the way to sync data was well planned out, since many have a Mac and a MBP (in my case it's two MBPs). But after much Googling I'm left disappointed. I want my two MBPs in sync. If I drag and drop a file on one, I want that reflected on the other automatically and vice versa. Both will be on same LAN most of the time. Essentially one is left connected to a 24 inch LCD with wireless k/board and the other is left in living room and I expect to be able to interact with either and the changes will show up on the other (and vice versa). To handle iCal and AddressBook I went for MobileMe (and found it disappointing yet again, failing to work and costing relatively a lot). But the real problem is files. As the machines will not each change files whilst be on a different LAN I don't see why an Internet based sync is necessary, but I'm not entirely opposed. The more I look into syncing two Macs the more I'm surprised at the lack of robust solutions. I'm hoping I'm wrong and someone can tell me how easy it is. I imagined I'd use Chronosync but when I look at apps I use and what they say, (e.g. 1password, OmniFocus, DevonThink, Curio), they seem to recommend using the likes of DropBox. But DropBox is not a great sync tool and I only see it as good for limited number of files, besides I've got Gigs of stuff to keep in sync so it seems mad to be going via the cloud. (I looked into iTunes and ended up deciding on a network drive for it as my iPod will have what I want to listen to on the go.)

I have a MacBook Air that I set up to connect to a shared drive on our university's network. I'm able to connect to it manually just fine after I've logged in, but I keep getting the following error every time I login: "Connection Failed: The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again."
Along with this comes a "?" in my dock, indicating the "share" drive cannot be found. I'm assuming I've pointed Leopard to an incorrect alias or something while I was figuring out how to connect to the share drive. How do I remove this instruction so the error message will just leave me alone?

iTunes sees calendars we have set up in the office (those being shared, coming from iCal Server - Lion), but it will not sync that data to our iphones. I tried this at home where I have my personal computer's client iCal app get calendar data from our work server. It won't sync that either, though iTunes does see (in the sync list) the calendars.

I have my Yahoo! eMail downloaded into my mail app. This works great and is not a problem. That is until I go to delete messages. If I delete them in the Mail app, they remain on my online inbox, and Vice Versa. I've tried hitting Sync Account in the mailbox drop-down menu but that doesn't do anything.

I have a lion server set up on a mac mini. I have set up an OD to manage network accounts through the server app. My workflow for setting up users is:Â
1. using the server app add a new user
2. I have a home folders users directory set up under file sharing and set to be available for home directories - so I select this share as the home folder for the user
3. I user the WGM app to then set up mobiility through the preferences tab to create always and to sync the home and preferences
4. I check that the home folder is set correctly under the user account in WGMÂ
When I log in to the client machine (regardless of whether or not I have first logged in on the server or not) the client presents an error saying that it can not log in and can not access the server at that time. The client stays on the user login screen.Â
If I then change the users home folder on the server to local I can then log in on the client machine and create the account. If I elect not to create the home folder on the client machine the rainbow ball of death occurs and the machine hangs. So I instead log in and select to create the local home folder. I then log out of the user and change the user setting on the server to point the home folder to the correct share instead of on the local setting.Â
I then log back on to the client machine and can log in without any problems. HOwever, I get an error message if I try to sync saying that the home folder is not accessible. This is despite the fact that the home folder, and the server et al, can be mounted in finder and I can copy and paste documents etc to and from the server. I have full and expected access to the server and the associated storage. For some reason home sync continues to say that the home folder can not be found (in fact that the server can not be found) whenever I try to sync. I have the OD bound to the client machine and have no problems seeing the users and being able to access the OD from the client machine.Â

So I'm rolling out 10.6 on some Mac Pros in our office. So far it's gone fairly smoothly (aside from the fact that Xerox has decided to not bother make drivers for 10.6). We're switching over to Apple's Mail/iCal/Contacts instead of the buggy Entourage. Of the 4 users, 3 of them are working fine. Sometimes their AD session goes buggy and they can't access shared folders on our server via smb, but a restart fixes it. I have one user who comes in every morning though, and her Apple Mail app can not sync with the Exchange 2007 server. It prompts her for her password and won't accept it. She can access shared folders though via smb and they open up right away, meaning it's recognizing her domain and user/pass with out her entering it manually.

Recently my Mailbox started prompting me for my password. When I enter it, I get told the MobileMe IMAP server rejects it, so my mac mail is frozen in time when viewed on my MAC. Yet I can log into to my mail via web just fine, my iPhone and iPad have no problem. It seems like this is an issue that occurred recently after I migrated ot iCloud but I cant be sure. I haven't made any other changes or software upgrades and I've been happily using mail for years. How does one resync IMAP passords on the server (if that is what I need to do)?

10.7.3, bound to ADÂ Several questions that I can't seem to find the answer to on apple's KB. Â 1. When setting up an iphone to synch with the lion server, why does it only present mail and notes for synch? Is this just how it works, you have to setup the different services seperately for mail, contacts, and calendar? I can't believe that when an iphone has builtin support for exchange.Â
2. I followed [url] to get ical working for AD users. I also followed http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5276 to get push notifications in ical and addressbook working for AD users. It was initially working after following this doc, however now it's not. Even after restarting just get invalid username or password. The log file shows something about an OD crash which seems to coincide with an attempt to login to iCal using AD credentials.
3. I cannot edit user's shortnames via WGM. Even so, it wouldn't accomplish what i need. So i'm fine with just manually creating aliases. I tried to edit the postfix aliases file for a test alias group: user1, user2 Doesn't work even after restarting mail it says it's unknown user. Mailman doesn't work the way i expected. I need to create distrobution groups, not a maillist. Â

I have a Nokia N78 cellphone which I can sync to my Macbook Pro using iSync. This works fine for photos, iCal, contacts but I what I would like to do is to be able to back up and view my sms on my Mac. Does anybody know if there is anyway of achieving this (free if possible)? If not, can anybody recommend a phone (other than the obvious iPhone) that has this syncing capability with Macs? I am looking to update my phone soon anyway.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom about "migrating" from server to normal MacOS? I have decided to get out of the server environment - it is much more than I need in my little home office network. I have used the "Migration Assistant" successfully for non-server to non-server.

I'm faced with the daunting task of migrating from Panther Server to Leopard Server. The present server is the Primary DNS serving several web sites (some of which is running MySQL databases). I have the luxury that we've bought 2 new Xserves last year, but due to time constraints, I haven't time until now to seriously consider the steps to this daunting task. We're also currently using a linux box for the firewall (it does no routing, just iptables rules). I want to migrate away from this also and utilize either Apple's firewall or a router. Is there anything out there on the web that will help me in this process? I'm terrified of messing up the production environment, especially since the Xserve is our DNS.

I have a 24" iMac (3gb RAM/Snow Leopard), that's about two years old. For four days it's been running sluggish, and giving me the "pinwheel" every minute. The HD would also make loud "whiring" noises, over simple processes. I did some reading and determined that maybe the HD was dying. I'm sure my warranty has expired, and I never bought into apple care

I'm new to the forum here, and I've been trying to research this problem for ages to no avail so I thought I'd try here.
My Macbook has been failing to turn on sometimes. When I press the startup button, the light on the lower right turns on, but the screen remains black and there's no startup sound. I can hear the hard drive start up, and when I do a cold restart, I can hear the hard drive whir to a stop. When this happens, I have to do the cold restart many times (sometimes once, sometimes 15, and once I had to do it for about 20 min before it could start up). When it starts up, it's fine and it's like as if nothing's happened.

A year ago I tested Spanning Sync for syncing my iCal with Google calendar. It worked out very well and I subscribed for one year (25 USD). Now there is version 2 around the corner that will add contact sync support. I have tried the beta and that works very well too.
My subscription is to end soon and I am thinking about extending. That would be another 25 USD for a year or 65 USD for life long subscription. Meanwhile I encountered another product called Busy Sync. I does almost the same (except contact syncing). With a coupon a single license per computer is 20 USD aka 40 USD for both of my macs.

We have a client who has a MAC Mini running OS X. System is not booting into the OS, its freezing up during boot process. Data on the hard drive is critical to the user.
- The hardware utility on the OS X install cd says there's no problems, but when removed from the mini, connected to a PC, and tested using bootable cd IBM Drive Fitness Test and Seagate Seatools, the drive fails both tests.
- The drive has been connected to our data transfer system (running Windows XP) and unsurprisingly XP sees the drive in disk managment, but doesn't see the partition in Explorer.
- Research online led us to HFSExplorer, which dies see the MAC partition and file tree. But any attempt to extract files results in a Java runtime error saying that the source cannot be accessed. Once this error is received, HFSExplorer crashes and must be relaunched, and will not detect the MAC partition again until the computer is hard shutdown and restarted. THe physical drive vanishes from disk managment when the error occurs also.
- Further research led us to MacDrive, which mounts the drive (after reporting that it detected an error and asking if we still want to mount). We can again browse the file tree, but as soon as we attempt to copy anything, it fails and the explorer window with the MAC partiton vanishes. Again, the system must be hard restarted in order to restore access to the partition.
- Found a repair utility in the MACDrive program. Running that results in the error "80070002: The system cannont find the file specified."
- I'm out of ideas at this point. Anyone have any advice? As I said, the drive contains data critical to the client.

I have a Mac Mini, it is hooked to a D-link router with a 50ft ethernet cable. I have never had problems in the past using my MacBook over wifi, but it seems like I am constantly losing my Internet connection on the Mac Mini. I have no problems when I am on it, but if I leave a download going, then come back, it seems to almost always pause or cancel the download. It has happened downloading songs from Napster through Safari, it happens in iTunes, and in Software Update.
OSX should not go to sleep if it's downloading a file, right? I even installed Caffeine to make sure it stays awake. Any ideas on what the issue might be? Or what I should try to do to figure it out?

I'm seeing a severe graphics glitch. At first I attributed it to a VM, but it has started affecting my whole system. Repeated reboots will eventually clear the issue, but it will trigger again when I boot up a VM, watch a flash video, or do anything GPU intensive. This doesn't happen every time I perform these actions so I have had difficulty finding a specific cause.

So I've only had my macbook pro aluminum body for about 4 months and after downloading the new system update, my laptopl just started acting weird and then it would just keep freezing with the pinwheel for extended periods of time. I've decided to verify and repair the disc, but to no avail, it didn't help. So, I backed up files in an external hard drive and erased my disc. However, after repeating to reinstall Snow Leopard at least 10 times, it keeps on telling me that it has failed to copy supported files. If I eject my installation DVD, it will just show up with a gray screen that has a folder and a question mark on it. I'm not sure what to do. I feel like I should take it over to an Apple store to consult with a Genius...but it is far from where I live. Any easy step to step advice on what I should do?

My MacBook 13" which was the current model when I bought it in September '08 decided after a normal shut down to not boot up the next time I tried. It gets as far as loading the grey apple symbol and then gets no further (no loading cog etc.
Naturally my first thought was to try to repair from my OSX install disc but when I booted from this the same problem occurred (the grey apple symbol, no further). The disc is definitely recognised by the disc drive and is displayed when I hold the option key on startup. I also tried using a friends OSX disc and the same problem occurred so I'm assuming it can't be the disc.
I have tried booting in safe mode, single user mode & verbose mode, none of which work although I am able to see where the script gets to in a safe mode boot by using the option that shows this .
The weirdest thing is that I have dual-boot set up with Ubuntu on my macbook and I can still boot to ubuntu fine, also all linux live discs I have tried in order to investigate the hard drive have had no trouble booting.

Last night I heard a couple of clicks and my G5 OS X 10.4.11 Boot Drive became unresponsive, Shutdown. Was able to install System on 2nd Internal. Launched DiskWarrior, which found the bad drive and made Preview Directory. Before had a chance to copy all more clicking started, so Shutdown. This AM swapped the drives in the bays so The Bad Drive is now in the Lower Bay. However now Diskwarrior does not see the damaged Drive nor does Disk Utility.

I'm running a Mac Pro 1,1 with a flashed ATI HD4870 - everything has been fine since getting the card back in March - played HL2 and Torchlight with nice framerates and no problems.
I bought Starcraft 2 today, partly to give the new card a proper workout.
Everything looked great to start with ? smooth graphics, nice lighting effects etc. then I started to get flashing lines and angular artifacts appearing all over the screen.
Now, thing is, this is what happened to my old X1900 XT when playing WoW. At first just slight graphic glitches and flashes but, over time, getting worse more quickly until the game became unplayable within minutes of starting it up. Getting the HD4870 fixed this and I was able to play WoW no problems after that.
I'm just wondering if this means my card is (already) on its way out - deteriorating like the X1900 did - or if it's something else in the computer that might be showing signs of stress?
I haven't seen anything here about the HD4870 failing on Starcraft

I use time machine to back up my data to a 300 Gb external iomega disk that I purchased back in 2006. Yesterday, Time Machine could not complete a backup and returned a 'Could not create the backup folder' error. I ran disk utilities and it returned a host of errors, ending with the message that the disk is corrupt, could not be repaired and I had to back up my data immediately. The data on the disk was however, still accessible.
