OS X Mavericks :: Control External LEDs?
Aug 29, 2014
The Raspberry Pi is a microcomputer. So is my mini. The Pi has video & audio out. So does my mini. The Pi has I/O. So does my mini. The Pi has an OS. So does my mini.
Can I hook my mini up to an external breadboard & control LEDs? Can I use Objective-C or some other programming language or the Terminal to control the LEDs?

I am a frequent guest on this board and bought my first MBP two years ago. To set up TimeMachine, I just got this new hard drive:
[URL]
It works flawlessly and is quite fast with FW800. However, I only have it for two hours now and already find the flashing white LEDs really annoying. They distract me from working. I could use tape to cover the LEDs, but it would not look good and there would still bright light when it's dark in my room because I can't cover all of the smaller openings. I googled for a solution to disable the LEDs but only found this:
[URL]
Obviously, this is for the network edition only, you would have to set up a php-server and so on... to be honest, I don't know a thing about that stuff.

I have looked everywhere, including under the right speaker. Have removed the display ... they are nowhere to be found. But I know they're hidden here somewhere!

The other thing is this light brown highlighting that jumps all over the place. Along with the twitcy mouse, it too appears suddenly, browning sometimes a whole page.

Checking out the WWDC keynote, I realised that there was no sign at all of Mission Control in Yosemite. Since they took away Dashboard and put it in Notification Center, any clue on where it is or whether it's been terminated? Any of the developers who have used the Beta program can tell me?

I have a macbook air in my household (it is not my laptop, but i bought it for my wife) and I am having a couple of issues.
1) occasionally, hard to reproduce, it looks like some of the LEDs at the bottom of the screen are going out. they alternate in a very specific dark light pattern. This started up a couple weeks ago
2) now the keyboard has now become unusable as the number keys are permanently shifted into !@#$% instead of 12345. The keys are not sticky or anything, and there does not appear to be any liquid damage, but then again, i am not the primary user of this laptop so who really knows.
Does any of this sound like something covered under warranty? Are there any water damage indicators i can check to see if damage was caused by this?

When I ask the iMac to speak a selection, it sometimes mispronounces words or goes between words too fast. Is there a way, like a special character or something, to change the way a voice speaks?

I bought 2 crap iMac's off eBay, 1 is the lowest iMac G5 ever made, the otherr is the highest. I the lower shows the 2 green LEDS and no signal for the display. The second is the same. I have given them their respectivly correct memory, clean and hoovered the insides, tried on multiple occasions to clear the Pram, and reset SMU, on both using my Alu apple keyboad. I have put a 250gb he in them , and although it is still an so drive, I just wanna see some screen

I have a mac mini with 8 gbytes of RAM. When my wife and I are both logged in (but only one actively, of course),
the memory usage goes up to maximum (7.94gbytes). Of this, only 2.8gbytes are app memory, with 4 gbytes of file cache.
This seems ridiculously high. Is there a way for me to instruct the mac os to use less file cache?

I'm currently on Snow Leopard but I'm running Mavericks on an external hard disk as a test. Most things seem to be working OK; but I have some complex automation set up using QuicKeys and Applescripts. I've given QuicKeys permission in System Preferences>Security to control the Mac, and all its shortcuts work OK; but where it hands off to an Applescript the process hangs with an error message saying the script is not allowed to control my Mac.
In the Security pane two 'Applets' appear (no further title) and I've allowed these permission; but still the same error and no apparent way of enabling the script.
I've set the General tab to allow any application to run, but I can't see any way of proceeding. Is there a way of getting this to work? - I have several vital pieces of automation which work fine on Snow Leopard and I will need them to work on Mavericks when I eventually get a new Mac.

Having just migrated from 10.6.8 where this problem didn't exist, I don't know where or what might be causing this in 10.9.3.
I run the JRivers music program Media Center and the normal player feeds the digital stream out the usb port to my DAC. It has 2 modes, starting up with exclusive access and not starting with exclusive access. I have tried it both ways with identical results.
If I run music thru the JRivers app and out the usb and then stop the player to have a browser (safari or firefox) play a video, the audio portion of the browser audio is sent to the front panel speaker and not to the usb port.
This wasn't the case with 10.6.8 where I would switch back and forth frequently. Now I have to restart the mac in order to 'release' the usb port back to the browser.
That is until I run the Media Center over usb.
I have run Audio Midi Setup, to see if I can 'release' the usb port, to no avail.

My iMac stopped booting. The fans and hard-drive spin up but the screen stays black and I can hear that the hard drive isn't been read after the initial spin up.
I decided to open it up to take a look at the diagnostic LEDs to see if it might help me diagnose the problem (the most obvious failure is the logic board). I can't find the LEDs anywhere, where are they? Does my iMac even have diagnostic LEDs?
The other possibility is that I can't find the lights because they aren't lighting up. The fans, the hard drive and the CD drive all spin up fine so at least I know that there is some power running though it.

For example, i set up the time limit to 1/2 hour for both week days and weekends. But I still I can get more than 6 hours. I searched the forum, historically Apple OSX has parental control bugs in versions.
What's the fix or remedy or other apps to limit the hour? Some people point out "time limit" and "bed time" conflicts with each other, check only one on solved some people's problem. But it doesn't work for me

Mail.app (Version 7.3 (1878.6) under 10.9.4) is driving me nuts with its superfluous animation. I run dual displays. I keep my main Mail window on my secondary display. When I click Reply (or Reply-All), the email I am replying to flies out and does its cute little flyover to the main display.
Is there a way to control this lame behavior? I thought Apple was against animations for the sake of animation. It's completely useless and a UI hindrance. Jakob Nielsen laughs at this, by the way. (Suggesting that I use my main display is not a fix. The software should adapt to my behavior, not vice-versa.)

One day ago I allowed remote access control to my Mac Book Pro OS10.9.4 to a company pretending to be Apple Authorized Online Services. After discovering this was a scam I need to be sure that they didn't leave or installed any app (hidden or not) and if so, how to delete it to prevent them to access my Mac again.
It would also be useful if there is a way to find out which information they may have accessed during the mentioned "session".

I have a slight problem with my volume controls on a Macbook Pro. They're not doing exactly what I want them to. I have an external sound card and by selecting it as my default audio device the macbook pros own volume control gets locked and there's no way to adjust it. This means that it renders the keyboard and Remote control volume buttons useless and I still have to run across the room to adjust the volume on my audio device when I'm watching a movie through the tv away from the macbook. Is there no way to enable this function anyway so both controls work?

I'm new here and was hoping for some feedback. I got a new 2.8 Imac and had it replaced after the Power Supply Position was idling at 82 degrees Celsius, and the top of the case felt very hot to the touch. The fans never "kicked in" even though it was that hot. Anyways, I got a replacement machine and the Power Supply Position now idles at about 68-70 degrees Celsius (much cooler), but the external portion of the machine still feels extremely hot. So my question is, how hot is too hot?? Is my machine normal and am I worried about nothing?? Should I be using SMC Fan Control?? Is the heat because of the 2.8 processor??

I have an external WD MyPassport HD that works well. I encrypted it and used it as my Time Machine backup disk for the past year.
Enter Mavericks. After a system failure a few days after Mavericks installation, I found a large iNode file in my root lost+found folder. The iNode is nothing special, simply a .pkg of the Mavericks installer. However, ever since that file appeared, my system refuses to acknowledge my password for the external HD. I know the password, it hasn't changed. But the password entry window does that wiggle thing whenever I enter the password. No, caps lock is not on.
So. I restarted in Safe Mode. Now, Mavericks recognizes the password for my external! Ain't that something? I would love to know why it doesn't recognize it in Normal boot mode.
But I still have a problem. Of course, it logically follows that I should decrypt my drive, erase Mavericks, and reinstall. Because, you know, I'm afraid of forever losing access to that drive if I reinstall OS 10.8 or even venture for 10.9 again, and the drive is still unreadable.
All of my backups are on that external disk, and while Safe Boot will READ the disk, IT WON'T DECRYPT IT! Does this have anything to do with indexing? Because another problem I'm having is Spotlight doesn't really work since I installed Mavericks either.

I have read several reviews that say there are some usb external displays that don't work with mavericks. I really wan't to have another monitor besides the one out of my thunder bolt cable. I understand that i need to update my drive and that might be why the reviews are the way they are they did not update there drive.

I have NTFS Paragon installed on my mac and I have recently purchased a 4TB Seagate expansion external HDD.
I wanted to change the name of it so when I plugged it into my TV, the name would come up correctly. It didn't work by just clicking on it and renaming it, so I tried erasing it and restoring with a new name.
My problem now is this;
Now that I have reformatted the HDD, when I plug it into my TV it always shows up as having two partitions...
Seagate Desk (1) (Usually around 399mb)
Seagate Desk (2) (Remainder of space)
When I plug the HDD into the Mac, it doesn't show up as two partitions, only when it's plugged into a TV (and possibly a windows based PC, not sure). I also had the same problem a while back when I tried to reformat a USB thumb drive using disk utility...

I have a 1 TB Lacie external drive. it was originally formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted). It also might have been formatted as a bootable drive, but I am not certain. Today I mounted the drive, entered the decrypt key and want to re-format the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I am using Disk Utility to do this. When I click on Erase within Disk Utility, I get this error: I am using Mac OS X Mavericks. how to fix this so that I can re-format the drive?

I have recently bought a MacBook Pro (10.9.4) with a 128 Gb solid state drive. My intended backup strategy is to have all my documents on an external 1 Tb USB3 drive (i.e, not in the MacBook Pro) and to back up that drive AND my Macbook (system, applications, mail etc) to another, powered 2Tb drive. I’m assuming I’ll have to partition the 2Tb drive first, by the way.

I have used a Samsung HX 1Tb external hard drive under OSX Snow Leopard with absolutely no problem. Since I upgraded to the free (improved?!?) OSX Mavericks my Macbook Pro cannot "see" my hard drive. All I get when I plug it in is the following message -
my MacBook thinks that the hard drive is formatted for windows - but why should it work OK under Snow Leopard but not with Mavericks? I don't want to simply reformat the external drive because I'll lose all the files stored on it.Is there suitable software/Apps that I can use to let my Mac access this external hard drive.Incidentally my partners new Macbook Air can still read this hard drive.
