OS X :: Mac Mini Not Going To Sleep Automatically
Jul 10, 2010
I purchased a 2009 Mac Mini in January this and I am loving it. Ever since I got it the machine does not go to sleep even with settings set and every program closed. The only way I can get it to go to sleep is by hitting the apple button and sleep. Sometimes I am not always here and would like it to go to sleep automatically.

My Mac Mini does not automatically go to sleep. Only after a safe boot in the login window it works. I already tried to reset PRAM and NVRAM and repaired access rights. After deleting my printers at least a manual sleep takes only 2 seconds instead of ~30.

I have a late 2008 15" MBP, and I often leave it playing videos while I go to sleep. Lately, it's stopped sleeping the display and/or going to sleep (depending on whether something's downloading in the background) after the video is finished, which is quite annoying as the screensaver's glare normally wakes me up in the middle of the night (and it's probably not too good for the display either).
Before a few weeks ago, it would quite happily sleep the display a few minutes after the video (in Front Row or otherwise) finished playing, but it's now consistently ignoring the sleep and display sleep settings (which are all correct). I even set the display sleep timer to 1 minute, waited without anything happening in the background, but nothing happens.
Anyone have any idea how to get the timers to work again?

I am running Mac Mini as a home server (turns out to be not a great idea, btw), and even though I set the preference to never sleep or shut down, it does go to sleep when there is no activity for long time. Since I am using it as home server, it should stay awake all the time or at least wake up from sleep when there is incoming ping from other computer, but it just goes to sleep.

I have a hot corner to put the mac display to sleep. Whether I use that or I use the 3 buttons to put the mac display to sleep, it wakes up after a while (probably due to some activity on the net or msn etc...) Is there a way to keep it asleep until I wake it up manually?

Whenever I put my iMac to sleep it comes out of sleep immediately but the second time it goes to sleep and stays asleep.
I believe this is due to the bluetooth mouse I'm using however I have the setting to allow bluetooth to wake the mac turned off. Is there anyway I can pinpoint exactly what's causing this.

My iMAC has suddenly decided it will not go into the sleep mode without any enforced changes to my preferences, which are set for the system to sleep after 15mins of inactivity. Now the screensaver kicks in and the computer screen is on all the time.

I had this problem since I used the power schedule to shut down my mac a day after I went on vacation. Now every morning I see the macpro awaken from sleep mode. The mouse is in it's stand so it can't be that. I disabled everything in power settings.

My iMac seems to wake up often in the middle of the night and in the day when I'm at school. I was wondering if there's an app/pill that can attempt to do the opposite of Caffeine: keep my Mac asleep at night. Does anyone know of such a thing? I doubt it exists, but then again sometimes I doubt I exist.

I have a rather strange issue with my G5 - even though I have selected "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for 5 minutes" in System Preferences/Energy Saver, my computer never sleeps. However, when I have a DVD in the tray, the computer sleeps automatically every time. why a DVD in the tray makes a difference? And how can I have the computer sleep automatically when a DVD is not inserted?

My Power Mac G5 does not go to sleep automatically. I had it set to go to sleep after 5 minutes of no activity. At least 5 minutes past but the computer failed to go into sleep mode. What could be preventing from going to sleep after the specified time?

My new 21.5" iMac didn't go to sleep automatically when in idle state. I read a lot of posts regarding this issue and tried a few of the possible solutions: resetting the SMC and so on. I finally was able to fix my problem (so far) with the help provided in the following link: [URL]

I had my iMac 27" for two months, and I am very pleased with the machine - except for one thing. When I put it to sleep, the computer just go to sleep in a couple of hours and then return to no-sleep. It started just after I bought the computer. I always set my computer to sleep, and so I did even then - but the first thing I noticed was that the hard drive was started during the first night. Strangely, I thought and put it to sleep again. Then I fell asleep, but when I woke up next morning the computer was on.
Then I wrote on another forum and they told me to check out: Wake up in network access, which I did. And then it got better. Now the computer has been without problems for a month, but then a few days ago it came back. This box is still check, so it can not have anything to do with it this time. I've also tried turning off all programs, the keyboard and mouse when it has gone down to sleep, but it still restarted. What is wrong? Please run with Sleep and it is a program that will prevent the computer to wake from sleep, but not:

What can I do? Can I submit it to Applecare? Some peoples say you do not have to turn off a Mac, but I want to put it to sleep, but it starts up the next day. I've also restarted the SMC, but it gave no effect.

My iMac G5 (OSX 10.4) starts up as normal, runs for about 5 minutes and then automatically goes to sleep. It will wake up if prompted, but every time it goes back to sleep in seconds. If left in sleep mode for a few minutes it will wake up again for 1 5 minutes before once again automatically returning to sleep.
It is definitely not due to hot corners. I changed the power saver settings several times, restarted and also reset the SMU but with no luck. Ive also ran an apple hardware test which got the fallowing error code: 2FAN/4/8: CPU Fan
Anything else I can try besides taking it in to an Apple service provider?

Several times my MBA (mid 2011) woke up by itself after setting it to sleep within a few seconds. Following appeared in the console:
kernel: Wake reason: EHC2kernel: The USB device HubDevice (Port 1 of Hub at 0xfa000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)kernel: The USB device Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad (Port 2 of Hub at 0xfa100000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (3)
I did a few resets (SMC etc.) and reinstalled Mac OS the first time. It didn't work. Then I did this all again and reinstalled Mac OS a second time. Both times I wiped the SSD. Now my MBA doesn't wake up again by itself. The Apple Hardware Test also was completed with no issues. But the above posted logs still show up when a wake it up by hitting the keyboard. Are these logs failure warnings or normal entries?

Is it possible to switch off the mains when the Mac Mini is in sleep mode?
I've only had MBPs in the recent years and appreciate their low impact on my electricity bill very much - letting them sleep unplugged does make a difference. Now I'm contemplating a Mac Mini and while I know its power consumption is as low as with the notebooks (if not lower without display), I'm wondering if the Mini needs the current in sleep mode. I assume it does, but I'd rather know than guess.
Thanks!
Markus

I am having a serious issue with my MacBook since upgrading to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. My MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, 2.4 GHz) will not go to sleep automatically anymore. If I select "Sleep" from the Apple menu it will sleep fine. However, it will not sleep according to my Energy Saver preference pane which says sleep at 1 min each (Display and Computer). Another thing to keep in mind is that my display sleeps perfectly normally. However, the computer itself will not sleep.
Here are the things that I have tried so far:
Reinstall 10.6.2 combo updater
Remove Energy Saver preferences and entire System Configuration folder
Made sure that no hardware or software is interrupting sleep
Reset PRAM and SMC
Repaired Disk Permissions
Archive and Install
I am running Mac OS X 10.6.2 with ALL updates and firmware installed.

So this past week when my mini hasn't stayed in sleep mode, it shuts itself down about a minute later after being in sleep mode. I haven't changed any of my settings in a year and a half, normally it would stay in sleep mode until i come back to it and logged on again. When it does shut down i just cannot power back on i have to unplug the adapter then replug it in for it to start up again. I've searched google and on here for possible ideas. I wouldn't think it to be overheating since I'm not running any applications when i put it in sleep. It might be the power supply since i have to do that process to get it to work again. Let me know what could be causing this or ways to troubleshoot this problem.

I have an issue where my iMac won't sleep automatically, via Energy Savings. I've checked Console.app and within the DATABASE SEARCHES > Console Messages, I keep getting a repeating message: 02/09/2009 08:33:23com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[200](com.seagate.notificationexec.plist) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds. I've searched my iMac, but cannot find any reference to this file. Can anyone advise how I can resolve the issue? (ie stop this reoccurring message)

I would like to my macbook pro to be turned off at 5% Battery power, as it doesn't turn of correctly at 0%. I'm having this issue for some years now, and want to get rid of it. Which plist needs to be changed for this? Or is there a Terminal-Command that's providing this? I don't want to buy a new battery yet, cause the one I have is quite fine still. I already reset the SMC and the Parameters. Is the battery status relevant, when resetting the SMC? Here's what has been going on so far: [URL]

So one day I activated deep sleep from this widget like I always do when I want to keep my 100% charge and i'm traveling with my macbook and keep my stuff saved.
It didn't work. So I kept clicking. clicking. clicking. Nothing.
So I slept my mac, and woke it again and it worked.
However when I went to wake it, I just got a grey screen. I held down the power button to cold boot, and when I rebooted it booted from the RAM file like it would normally when waking from deep sleep.
But now every-time I close the laptop it goes into deep sleep.
