OS X :: MS Office 2004 For Mac 11.5.5 Keeps Crashing In SL
Sep 23, 2009
Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, MS Office 2004 for Mac v 11.5.5 keeps crashing MacBook 2Ghz 2Gb RAM. Frequently happens during simple Excel column totaling or Powerpoint formatting. No problems (yet) in Word. Previously worked without problem in Leopard. Please don't tell me to switch to iWork
Microsoft on Tuesday released stability and performance updates for Office 2004 and Office 2008 for Mac, both of which also patch vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to overwrite the contents of a computer's memory by using malicious code.
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.1 Update
Aside from the security fix, Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.1 Update [14.5MB] also updates the Japanese postal code dictionary in Entourage and fixes an issue that causes Word 2004 to close unexpectedly when opening a document that contains a numbered list.
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.2 Update
The 12.1.2 update for Office 2008 for Mac [159.6MB] is more substantial, repairing a global issue that prevented all Office 2008 applications from running AppleScript scripts from the Script menu, while also delivering a number of individual fixes for Word, Excel and Entourage.
More specifically, Microsoft said Word should now launch more quickly and tables will no longer included random instances of bold text. Other changes improve the display of form fields and the reliability of headers & footers in the word processing application.
Meanwhile, Excel should now open spreadsheet files that contain invalid characters and see improvements to the overall performance of calculations. Number formatting for some international languages and stability when saving workbooks that contain PivotTable reports has also been improved.
One of the major focus areas for Entourage was to improve stability when using Microsoft Sync Services, Microsoft said. In particular, Tuesday's update fixes an issue that where all contacts in Entourage or in the Apple Address Book would be deleted and re-created when you use Microsoft Sync Services. It should also prevent duplication of events and other items in Entourage or in iCal.
Other changes to Entourage focused on improving junk mail filtering, recurring calendar events, time zone information, embedded images, and the reliability when Entourage establishes a encrypted channel.
Student Office 2008 deal
Earlier Tuesday, Microsoft said it has teamed with a select few Apple authorized resellers like Amazon.com to offer students up to 30 percent off its various Office 2008 productivity suites when they're purchased alongside a new Mac before September 8th.
The offer translates into $15 off Office 2008 Home and Student Edition, $80 off Office 2008 Standard Edition, and $150 off Office 2008 Special Media Edition..
Amazon is also offering between $50 and $200 rebates on Apple's entire Mac line through August 25th.
So here is my dilemma. I got a letter a few days ago from the college I am going to, and it included a list of requirements if we were bringing our own computer. One of the requirements was if we had a Mac, to have Office 2008. I have talked to a friend who is replacing her current Macbook with another Macbook later in the summer, and we decided that when she bought her Macbook, that we could split the price of Microsoft Office for Mac 2008. Now, should I just go ahead and continue on with the plan with my friend, or what? Is there a huge difference in Office 2004 and Office 2008?
I've just installed new Mac Leopard to my G5 (old version was Tiger), but the Microsoft Office Mac 2004 did not work: I could not print out any M.O. documents? I did google and found that MO Mac 2004 work with Leopard, but somehow not on mine!!
I'm running office 2004 on my MBP. Normally I would just hit file, print, print to adobe PDF to convert to a PDF and everything worked fine. Now i'm getting an error message when I try to do this...anyone ever had this happen to them?
I am trying to upgrade Office 2004 to version 11.5.6. I am current in Office upgrades but when I try this upgrade the installer hangs and I get the "not responding" message. I have tried both auto and manual installs and turned off and on the computer.
I have updated to lion and my office 2004 does not work. I need to buy and install office 2011. do I need to uninstall 2004 first? THe remove office application does not work as it requires power pc which is not supported by lion.
so i just got a new 24" imac (midrange) and after instaling the software updates, wanted to get office 2004 on it.
i installed it on my powerbook years ago, on my dad's imac last year, then again on the powerbook after i had to wipe the drive.
now i put it into the superdrive and it keeps on whirring over and over again without actually reading it. it ejects with some help. i put in other dvds and they worked fine. (i put the office dvd into my dad's imac and my powerbook and they were fine, ran setup assistant)
anyone know the problem here? new imac has a bad drive?
I updated to Lion os x and now can not use Microsft Office 2004, I cant open it or uninstall it, it just says powerPC applications are no longer supported.I have lost all emails on Entourage and can only retrieve emails via hostway that have been delivered today.
Trying to get help from Apple care is a nightmare as they need a serial number, which Lion being a digital download does not have one only web order number, which does not work when I put in serial box.
I am a new Mac user and am attemptiong to import clip art from the Microsoft Website (via Firefox).Evidently, you need to associate the file type ".cll" with the browser in order for it to open and allow it to be read in the Office application. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do this. The online help topic (from M$) doesn't mention Firefox, but gives instruction for IE and Netscape. The Netscape instructions are below, but I cant figure out if this is something I can do with Firefox...
======= To configure Netscape Navigator to open clips on Mac OS X
1. Start Netscape Navigator version 6.0 or later. 2. On the Netscape menu, click Preferences. 3. Click Navigator, and then click Helper Applications. 4. Click New Type, and then type the following information:
Description of type: Clip Art and Media File File extension: .cil MIME Type: application/vnd.ms-artgalry 5. Click Choose and browse for the Microsoft Clip Gallery program, usually located in the Office folder under your Microsoft Office installation folder. Click Open, and then click OK. 6. In the Preferences dialog box, click OK. 7. Close Netscape Navigator, and then restart it.
I've been using Office X for some time. I bought Office 2004 for Mac (Student Teacher Edition) from a friend who upgraded last May. I got the manual and the Product ID with it. I never got around to Installing it, but my hard drive failed recently and Apple replaced it, obviously without any of my stuff on it. So I decided if I have to reinstall all my software, I'd go ahead and use the Office 2004 as I don't think the Office X is fully compatible with Tiger (because of it's age and a few issues I've had with it over the past two years). Now, here's the problem. When I tried to install it, the product ID didn't work as the Product/CD Key.
I called my friend and she no longer has the box or the Product Key, and of course, the Product key from my Office X doesn't work. Is anyone familiar with Office 2004 for Mac? Is there any difference between the "retail" version and the Student/teacher version that would prevent the Product Key from one with working with the other? Would anyone be willing to share their Product key with me, to install the software so I can get back to work? I've already lost 4 days in time (and have to recreate 2 days worth of work that was done after my last file backup) and don't have time to deal with this stuff.
Downloaded latest MS Office 2004 Security Update 11.6.0, and it has poisoned my entire Office suite of apps. Since loading, I cannot access Entourage, Word, or any other Office apps. Error messages pop up repeatedly every time I try to open them. "MS Office library files may have been moved from original location. Reinstall Entourage, etc." For the last 6 years, this software and previous updates have worked flawlessly. This really stinks!!! Do I reload original software over the top of the existing apps., or is there another easier work around that I can use to get back into my MS Office apps.? I am running OS 10.4.11 Tiger with older Power PC processor.
My Entourage 2004 DB is corrupted. The database utility tool is unable to repair it. It gives me an error "an I/O error has occurred". I tried EntourAid and that doesn't work either. When the repair starts, it soon crashes the app with an error -36.
Microsoft Word gives me an error "unable to load Microsoft Framework Library". Not sure if this is related.
Have already repaired permissions, run Onyx, EntourAid, etc.
I was not having any problems until I updated my Safari to the latest version, 5.1.4. Now I can't get into any of my MS Office applications or my HP Director. I get a message saying "____ quit unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again. This report will be sent to Apple automatically". But when I select 'Reopen' it keeps on returnng to that page which is filled with details that don't mean anything to me - lots of numbers and the repeated use of the word 'crash'. All I can do is select 'OK' which closes that box but doesn't open the apps.
The other day, office 2004 for my Macbook Air was unable to open any application (Word, PPT, Excel, etc). Below is a list of logs I believe would reflect the error.
I'm on a MacBok Pro running OS X 10.6.8 and have Microsoft Office 2004. Suddenly ALL of the Office applications are giving me the error message that the applications have "quit unexpectedly."Â I get the message literally DOZENS of times, can't reopen the applications, and can't open any of my documents.Â
Okay, so we were forced to upgrade to Office 2008 so we could use the new Entourage, but we still want to use Word 2004 as our default for opening .doc documents.
You can go into the Get Info window all day long, set it and CHANGE ALL, but it doesn't work. Have tried this on various Macs, we're mostly still running Leopard, a few on Snow Leopard.
My copy of Office for Mac 2004 Entourage 11.4.0 was corrupted today when downloading mail. Accessing mail via Blackberry 8330 showed that physical gaps were email messages that weren't in Entourage Inbox.
When I attempted to do anything--click in gaps to get missing messages, delete messages, etc., I got a screen saying Unknown Error (4362).
It really ***** me that Office 2004 places the Microsoft User Data folder in your Users/Accountname/Documents folder, and if you move it it just makes a new one Is there any reliable way to move the location to somewhere else and keep it that way? The Documents folder should be the realm of the user and the user alone, damn applications should keep their noses out!
Recently I read about a feature in versions of Office up until 2003/2004 called "Fast Saves." Apparently, Microsoft put the feature in Office to save documents faster by only adding the changes to the document, rather than overwriting the older text that was deleted. One thing that disturbs me about this feature is the fact that metadata revealing deleted text could easily be retrieved by someone who receives the document.
While I don't have MS Office, I have used it to write documents on a friend's Mac (he has since upgraded to Office 2008, which doesn't have FS, and doesn't know anything about the feature) when my computer did not work.
I have two questions regarding this:
1. Is Fast Saves enabled by default? If not, was it disabled by default since it shipped in '04, or did Microsoft disable it with a patch or Service Pack, like they did in disabling FS on Office 2003 last fall?
2. Is the following metadata an example of FS being on? In this document and several others, I noticed that portions of the actual text are repeated in sentence and word fragments, with some of their words and letters missing (and with random symbols inserted, in some cases). Now, while I thought this might be an example of deleted data, I noticed that same pattern with documents in which I just pasted text from a website without modifying any of it.
Could it be a secondary aspect of FS, though?
