Applications :: Office 2008 Upgrade/Want Word 2004 As The Default
Jan 8, 2010
Okay, so we were forced to upgrade to Office 2008 so we could use the new Entourage, but we still want to use Word 2004 as our default for opening .doc documents.
You can go into the Get Info window all day long, set it and CHANGE ALL, but it doesn't work. Have tried this on various Macs, we're mostly still running Leopard, a few on Snow Leopard.

So here is my dilemma. I got a letter a few days ago from the college I am going to, and it included a list of requirements if we were bringing our own computer. One of the requirements was if we had a Mac, to have Office 2008. I have talked to a friend who is replacing her current Macbook with another Macbook later in the summer, and we decided that when she bought her Macbook, that we could split the price of Microsoft Office for Mac 2008. Now, should I just go ahead and continue on with the plan with my friend, or what? Is there a huge difference in Office 2004 and Office 2008?

I am trying to upgrade Office 2004 to version 11.5.6. I am current in Office upgrades but when I try this upgrade the installer hangs and I get the "not responding" message. I have tried both auto and manual installs and turned off and on the computer.

Microsoft on Tuesday released stability and performance updates for Office 2004 and Office 2008 for Mac, both of which also patch vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to overwrite the contents of a computer's memory by using malicious code.
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.1 Update
Aside from the security fix, Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.1 Update [14.5MB] also updates the Japanese postal code dictionary in Entourage and fixes an issue that causes Word 2004 to close unexpectedly when opening a document that contains a numbered list.
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.2 Update
The 12.1.2 update for Office 2008 for Mac [159.6MB] is more substantial, repairing a global issue that prevented all Office 2008 applications from running AppleScript scripts from the Script menu, while also delivering a number of individual fixes for Word, Excel and Entourage.
More specifically, Microsoft said Word should now launch more quickly and tables will no longer included random instances of bold text. Other changes improve the display of form fields and the reliability of headers & footers in the word processing application.
Meanwhile, Excel should now open spreadsheet files that contain invalid characters and see improvements to the overall performance of calculations. Number formatting for some international languages and stability when saving workbooks that contain PivotTable reports has also been improved.
One of the major focus areas for Entourage was to improve stability when using Microsoft Sync Services, Microsoft said. In particular, Tuesday's update fixes an issue that where all contacts in Entourage or in the Apple Address Book would be deleted and re-created when you use Microsoft Sync Services. It should also prevent duplication of events and other items in Entourage or in iCal.
Other changes to Entourage focused on improving junk mail filtering, recurring calendar events, time zone information, embedded images, and the reliability when Entourage establishes a encrypted channel.
Student Office 2008 deal
Earlier Tuesday, Microsoft said it has teamed with a select few Apple authorized resellers like Amazon.com to offer students up to 30 percent off its various Office 2008 productivity suites when they're purchased alongside a new Mac before September 8th.
The offer translates into $15 off Office 2008 Home and Student Edition, $80 off Office 2008 Standard Edition, and $150 off Office 2008 Special Media Edition..
Amazon is also offering between $50 and $200 rebates on Apple's entire Mac line through August 25th.

By default, I save all my word documents in rich text format (.rtf). After I installed Snow Leopard, these files now open by default with Text Edit.
Since I want these files to open by default in Microsoft Word 2008, I right clicked on the file, chose "other", selected "Word 2008", and then checked "always open with". However, the files still open by default in Text Edit...

I have a MB Pro and run Office 2008 on it. I'm running OSX 10.5.8, but had the same thing occur on OSX 10.4.x so I believe its isolated to Office.
In Word, when I go File, Open the application hangs. It open the finder like window but it has a huge amount of columns and spans across at least ten screens. I have the spinning pin-wheel and the application reports as not responding. It does not happen when I do file, open recent.

I purchased Office 2008 for Mac from the Apple store at the end of August and as part of the Technology Guarantee, I'm eligible for a free upgrade to Office 2011. Purchase a qualifying Office 2008 for Mac product between Aug. 1, 2010, and Nov. 30, 2010, and you will be eligible to download Office for Mac 2011 at no additional cost* when it becomes available. My question is...should I do it? Does anyone have any experience or insight into Office 2011? Also...I'm not sure if this should be a determining factor, but my purchased copy of Office 2008 came with three product keys. Apparently if I upgrade to 2011, I only get one product key. Big deal?

I have recently upgraded to Mavericks and now find that my old Word files (2004) can't be opened. (I can still open my Word 2008 files.) I have been a maths teacher for decades and have many old files which are still very useful but they contain more than just text; they contain diagrams, MathType expressions etc. etc. I need to be able to convert these files to files that can be opened with Mavericks. How I can do this?
Info:
MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Does anyone else find it incredibly annoying that you cannot open an MS Word doc in one space and then go to another space to try to open another doc there without being flipped back to the first space? This seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to want to do - I use Spaces with separate projects not applications.
I've spoken to Apple support and they say it's something I need to take up with MS. I am well aware that these companies have in the past blamed each other for previous incompatibility issues. Do anyone have any insight on these problems before I do contact MS?

After upgrading to Lion, I can no longer see the text in my word documents or excel worksheets. I know the text is there because it appears in the formula bar - it just isn't visible in the cells. I can also see the text if I quickview the excel files. In the word documents, all I can see are the pictures/images...no text. Weird. I have the latest version of Office 2008 and Lion OS.

Ready to install Office 2011 for Mac. Currently we are running Office 2008 for Mac.
What is the best way to eliminate Office 2008 and to ensure a clean Office 2011 install?
For most Mac programs, I would normally drag the application folder to the trash, and then do a library search for some entries related to the program. Will this work for Office 2008 to Office 2011? I ask because the M$ installers seem to more than simply add the app to your app folder and update the libraries - and don't get me started on the horrors of the Windoze registry errors.

My friend is having a weird issue with his Microsoft Word. When he opens the program, instead of having a blank document there is box with text in it (see attached picture). Any time you click to open a blank document, this is what you get. He has never used this text before and has had this issue since he installed Office 2004.
Does anybody know how to get rid of this or set the default to a blank document?

I have a MS Word document to which I want to add photos. I've been able to drag the jpegs in question to the right place in the document, position them, and even re-size them. But when it comes to altering their positions--like nudging them a little to the right, they don't move. I've been trying to click on them to grab and then drag, but it doesn't work--they stay put, completely left justified.

I am a new Mac user and am attemptiong to import clip art from the Microsoft Website (via Firefox).Evidently, you need to associate the file type ".cll" with the browser in order for it to open and allow it to be read in the Office application. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do this. The online help topic (from M$) doesn't mention Firefox, but gives instruction for IE and Netscape. The Netscape instructions are below, but I cant figure out if this is something I can do with Firefox...
=======
To configure Netscape Navigator to open clips on Mac OS X
1. Start Netscape Navigator version 6.0 or later.
2. On the Netscape menu, click Preferences.
3. Click Navigator, and then click Helper Applications.
4. Click New Type, and then type the following information:
Description of type: Clip Art and Media File
File extension: .cil
MIME Type: application/vnd.ms-artgalry
5. Click Choose and browse for the Microsoft Clip Gallery program, usually located in the Office folder under your Microsoft Office installation folder. Click Open, and then click OK.
6. In the Preferences dialog box, click OK.
7. Close Netscape Navigator, and then restart it.

I've been using Office X for some time. I bought Office 2004 for Mac (Student Teacher Edition) from a friend who upgraded last May. I got the manual and the Product ID with it. I never got around to Installing it, but my hard drive failed recently and Apple replaced it, obviously without any of my stuff on it. So I decided if I have to reinstall all my software, I'd go ahead and use the Office 2004 as I don't think the Office X is fully compatible with Tiger (because of it's age and a few issues I've had with it over the past two years). Now, here's the problem. When I tried to install it, the product ID didn't work as the Product/CD Key.
I called my friend and she no longer has the box or the Product Key, and of course, the Product key from my Office X doesn't work. Is anyone familiar with Office 2004 for Mac? Is there any difference between the "retail" version and the Student/teacher version that would prevent the Product Key from one with working with the other? Would anyone be willing to share their Product key with me, to install the software so I can get back to work? I've already lost 4 days in time (and have to recreate 2 days worth of work that was done after my last file backup) and don't have time to deal with this stuff.

So I got Office 2011; it's pretty good stuff. Unlike Windows based systems, it did not remove Office 2008 which is different. I am wondering if there is any reason that I should or should not remove 2008 since I have 2011 (exact same programs).

When docx files started floating around, I couldn't figure out how to open them in MS Word for Mac 2004. Then I found out you could download the xml converter from the MS site, and that solved the problem. However, now that I have installed Leopard and reinstalled MS Word 2004 and the requisite xml converter, for some reason, when I double click on a docx file, it does not automatically ask to convert it as it once did.
Instead, it seems to bypass/ignore the double clicked docx file and goes straight to that open document screen where you choose what type of document you want. Anyone know how to get it to automatically open the docx files up in ms word 2004 and convert with the xml converter in leopard?

It really ***** me that Office 2004 places the Microsoft User Data folder in your Users/Accountname/Documents folder, and if you move it it just makes a new one Is there any reliable way to move the location to somewhere else and keep it that way? The Documents folder should be the realm of the user and the user alone, damn applications should keep their noses out!

I'm sure most people suffer from this but here goes.
So I make a presentation on Mac Office powerpoint, everything is fine. I open it up at university on the PC, all is fine. I maybe change some text on a slide and save it again. Open the same file again on my Mac, and it won't open some silly error comes up saying trouble accessing file from mac HD.
Then luckily I have keynote, so I just open it in that and use that.
Point is why does this happen?? Whilst keynote is better, sometimes I have to edit things on a PC at work or uni and then it becomes a giant mess on my mac.
Is there a quick fix, or will I have to throw Mac Office into my growing pile of Microsoft related garbage.

1 - can I open & modify Excel 2003 files in this mac 2008 version?
2 - Mac 2008 excel docs - if sent to PC users, can they open them and modify them?
3 - Best Buy sold me a copy that says "service desk edition" on the front - is this normal?

Hope I'm asking this in the right section (if not feel free to move this as needed!). I'm totally new to Macs (actually I haven't got one yet but I'm ordering the MBP 13" in the next couple of weeks), I'm doing a degree part-time at university and I also work full time. At the moment I use microsoft office 2007 for my course and job (essays, invoices etc), so I use word, powerpoint and (occasionally onenote and excel). I know most of my lecturers use word so I would have to be able to email them my documents in this format. I was all set to get iWork pre-installed but now I keep hearing about compatability issues when saving/sending/sharing documents that are made with pages and then saved and shared in word format - tables misaligning, bits missing etc. I then looked at Office 2008 for Mac but the reviews on this are a bit so-so aswell, saying it's not as good as the windows version, features hard to find etc. So now I'm really confused which bit of software to get. I know I could run office for windows with bootcamp but my copy of windows is OEM and I don't want to go to the hassle and expense of buying another copy of windows and have to keep re-booting from one OS to the other. Has anyone got any opinions on the 2 programs, particularly from a new windows -> mac user point of view?

I & my friend are both Mac users and we are thinking about purchasing Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac.
Does anyone know if this software is a family package that allows different users to use it?
If so, I would be saving half the cost as I'm spending 50% while my friend's also spending the other 50.
Can this work? How about VMware Fusion 3.0?

when i create a PDF file of my *.docx in Word 2008, I get a 'strange' PDF. This happens wether I use the "Save as PDF..." from the print dialog, or save the file as a PDF from Word's own "Save as..." dialogue.
Opening the PDF in either Preview or Adobe Acrobat works just fine, and the PDF looks just like I want it to be, but whenever I mark some text, a whole range of text is marked.
Thus it is impossible to mark just a single line/word/character and the produced PDFs are useless in my line of work, since I need people to mark text in them and post comments.
Interesting facts:
1) When I "Save as PostScript..." from Word 2008, then open the *.ps file in Preview and save as PDF from there, everything is fine.
2) Printing to PDF via print dialogue -> "Save as PDF..." produces perfect PDFs in any other Program (such as TextMate), also with selectable text.
