That was a program I had installed with a printer briefly. Bottom line, I don't need it anymore, but can't figure out how to remove it. It isn't located in the list under System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items either. So where can I disable it?
View 3 RepliesI have a duplicate item, namely Expander Daemon, in Sys Prefs > Accounts > Login Items. The first one heads a list of 7 items in total. It says its Kind is Unknown. The second ED is at the end of the list and its Kind states Application. Is it safe to remove the first ED?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just noticed that in my Finder window sidebar, under "Shared", I have a character called Thomson listed. I don't know any Thomson and I bought the machine, an MBA, brand new. However, I did have an engineer instal the machine in my apartment and can only assume he's the mysterious Thomson. Anyway, whoever he/she is, I don't want him/her on my machine as Shared & "connected as guest". The point is, I cannot find a way to delete Thomson!! Can anyone help? I've tried System Preferences>Security and Accounts and there's no trace of Thomson there. Right clicking on Thomson in the sidebar of Finder only gives me the option to Open and Get Info. Most annoying, this. There MUST be a way to delete a Sharing but totally unwanted guest....
View 13 Replies View RelatedI just installed Skype and noticed that it starts up when I log into my Mac. Fair enough: for the time being I don't want this, so I entered the Accounts control panel, then Login items where I ticked the "Hide" box next to where Skype was listed. But Skype still starts up when I log into/power up my Mac. What gives? I thought "hide" meant the same thing as "disable" during login, but apparently not. I know I can remove Skype from the Login items list, but since I sometimes want it to automatically start when I power up my Mac that would be a bit cumbersome.
I'm using MacOS 10.4.11
Anyone know if this can be done (remove a directory in trash)? I've tried going into Terminal and using rmdir and dragging the folder I want deleted to Terminal, but it says the folder is not empty, and doesn't delete it. Using rm and dragging deletes other than folders, but how to do this for folders escapes me (unless I go and delete all the contents, which would be a PITA).

Saftey is not a big issue i am the only one using the laptop. I still use a keychain password so not just anyone can install and change whatever settings or programs they want i like this just don't want to use a password to log in.

I'm sure many of you know how using bootcamp can cause slow startups when switching OS's because it has no cache to use. For example I'll be in Windows and then need to swap back over to Leopard to get something done, but it takes forever. The worst part is the list of login items... I've tried using scripts to separate them by 10 seconds or so, but nothing really made it faster. I was wondering if it was possible to login but cancel or disable the startup items for that login that one time... Sometimes I just need to login to grab something off the internet or something quick, but it takes me awhile because I have to wait for everything to load.
Do I make any sense? :P
And no, safe startup mode does not count. I don't want to disable the entire system... just the login items.
Would like to disable my external drive from automounting every time a user logs in. Added an /etc/fstab, but still automounts on login. I would like this drive to mount only when I choose to mount it.

Does anyone know how one would go about disabling and removing the Mac App Store outside of using Parental Controls? Here's what I've tried:
1. Trashing App Store.app entirely - which seems to re-assign the "App Store" link in the Apple menu back to "Mac OS X Downloads..."; the only problem is that when you attempt to open a file type that OS X doesnt recognize, the dialog asks you if you want to search the App Store at which point you hit the button and it does nothing. Not a proper solution.

i turn on my powerbook, after about 10 minutes a loud vibration along with noise comes from what i am sure is the dvd drive, and crashes my finder (computer). there is no disk in the drive and I have tried using it with a disk in the drive, but the same thing happens.my warranty is well over, i just need it to work and don't need the dvd drive.so, my question:is it possible to disable or remove the drive from the computer and it still function?

Is there a way to disable or hide the sleep button at the login screen? I am trying to send updates and/or commands from ARD.... But the end users are putting the computers to sleep by pressing the sleep button. This is causing the ARD updates/commands to fail. The computers and severs are all Lion OSX. If I can disable the sleep button at login then I can send the updates/commands. I normally only do the updates/commands when there is no user logged in.So I am not concerned with the case where the user is already logged in and puts the computer to sleep. I have already setup an MCX in WGM for the Energy Saver.

I wrote an AppleScript script and saved it as an Applet that needs to run in the background whenever the system is up.
1/ I tried to set it as a startup item, so that it would start running as soon as the Mac is on -- however without success. I did not find out what the proper way is of doing this. Â
2/ Then I tried to set it as a login item for each user. This is not as good, but I thought it may an alternative, 'buying me some time' to figure out how to do it properly as a system startup item. Launching the app works fine, but the user cannot log off again, because the system cannot seem to quit the script. So I have to stop the process in Activity Monitor, obviously not a solution. Â
3/ Also, I would prefer the script to not show up in the Dock. Â

I move a file to Trash or use the delete command a pop message comes up "This item will be deleted immediately. You can?t undo this action" - 'Show warning' is not selected in finder preferences. I have a nine day old 27" gi7 imac where I copied all the settings from my macbook pro via time machine. Both machines were on 10.6.2 and I am the only user - this problem only surfaced today. I ran Repair Disk Permissions with no luck and called Apple?.. they said that the only way to get rid of this was to perform a clean install making sure to back-up everything. I said that that was crazy and would involve me in having to invest in a new HD as I've already filled the imac with 500gb of stuff that has now been wiped over and I don't have a spare 500 gigs kicking around.

Unable to remove login items (Revert after reboot) iOX10.5 iMac
I am having issues and permanent encounter in having my removed login items reappearing after reboot. I have very MANY of the same programs in 'open at Login accounts' eg: Messenger,Safari,Skype,Evernote,Dropbox,antivirus, but they are listed dozens of times. in this 'open at login' area.
Here's the steps I have taken:
1) Open Applications, Account Preferences, cluck my administrator acc, select program to delete, click on - and wait.
2) Remove some login items (with or without unlocking the lock, doesn't seem make a difference, tried both)
3) Login items are now fewer
4) Reboot
5) voila, the removed login items are still loaded and displayed in login item tab.
