OS X :: Increase Memory By Deleting?
May 5, 2009
I have just deleted a DVD of 600 MB but the Memory has stayed the same at 512 MB. Can I create more memory by deleting CD's and DVD's (downloaded music and film)? What else can I delete to create more memory and how?

I just bought my mac last month, and was thinking about down the line increasing the memory from 4GB to 8 or 16. But when I looked on Amazon, all I could find was memories and in the reviews everyone was talking about Macbooks, not iMacs. Could I use the same memory?
Here's my system information, if it helps: Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b) and: Model Name: iMac Model Identifier: iMac12,1 Processor Name: Intel Core i5 Processor Speed: 2.7 GHz Number of Processors: 1 Total Number of Cores: 4 L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB L3 Cache: 6 MB Memory: 4 GB

I'm running my rather oldish Mac Mini with original 2GB memory, version 10.6.8 and have loaded Sibelius 7 onto it. Whilst I've not got into using full orchstral scores yet, would it be worth me upgrading the memory in readiment? If so, what memory should I upgrade it to and who should I go to for the memory?
I'm also experiencing the "disk was not ejected properly" message which is very frustrating and it follows a recent upgrade to the above mentioned version.

Hi there, a couple of easy questions I hope.
What is the simplest was to increase the memory on a 10GB Imac G3. 9.7GB are used up and there isn't much I can delete to free up space. It is a friend's computer, she is not mac savvy.
Also, I am considering rebooting the system as there is an account on there with a forgotten password and the original administrator password is long forgotten. What would be the best way to go about doing this? I have 10.4 os discs, with extra memory would this work ok?
Thanks in advance.

I have a unibody Macbook 2.4 with 4GB RAM, running the latest version of Leopard (10.5.5). In activity monitor, I see each process has uses virtual memory of over half a gig, with a total VM size of over 40GB. Is this normal? Is all this virtual memory eating space on my hard disk? Why does each process require so much virtual memory? Is all the software on my Macbook, bloatware?
The attachments show what I am saying. Do others also have similar VM statistics?how to increase memory size

What do you guys think?I am also curious as to the clock speed of the new upcoming processors. Online it says the fastest one they have is 3.2 GHZ, so will the speed increase come from DDR3 memory and no frontside bus?Does anyone know the actual technical differences between the current processors and the upcoming, other than the memory and frontside bus?

i have 4 gb of ram, and would like to increase the shared video memory in windows 7, that i am using via boot camp. i know you can do it using the bios, but because there is no bios, is there any program that emulates the bios for boot camp, or another solution to do this?
then, why does windows 7 read just 3 gb of ram, when i have 4?

We all know that you could never have enough memory in our computers, so I have a fairly simple question to ask. When OS 10.6.0 comes out a.k.a. Snow Leopard, will all the Intel Core 2 Duo machines have an increased ram capacity. It looks more and more everyday as if 4GB is becoming a standard in machines and all across the board (Dell,Hp,Apple) computer these days are handling 8GB of ram with ease. So does anybody know if when Snow Leopard comes out, will there be a potential for my MacBook to contain 8GB of ram.

If I delete a file from a memory stick- it does not free space. This is because the item has been moved to the trash and it hasn't been permanently deleted. If I want to free the space I need to empty my trash. If I don't want to empty my trash how can I delete a file from a memory stick to free space (permanently delete just 1 file)? Also (sort of linked) - how do I just delete 1 file from trash (empty just 1 file)? The reason I like to keep trash for a while just incase I need to restore a file, if I know I will not need to restore it, then I want to permanently delete just that file.

I am still "new" to the Mac world and I have a question about memory sticks/thumb drives and deleting info. I deleted some stuff from a thumb drive and it shows up in the trash can, but when I eject the thumb drive the trash can is empty of the stuff I deleted from the thumb drive. So I figured nothing to delete from the trash can.
So today when I plugged in the thumb drive the stuff that I deleted shows back up in the trash can. So for fun I ejected the thumb drive and the trash was empty. Is this normal? I am now deleting the stuff in the trash can with the thumb drive attached and I can see it "in use" light flashing on the thumb drive.

I have a iMac DV G3/500 (Special Edition) from summer 2000. Anyway, I am using Mac OS 10.2.8. Recently, my start up disk's memory has gone done from 1.2 GB available free space to 668MB (currently). I haven't saved anything on this disk so I can not understand why this memory has dissappeared. I have also had icons on the start up menu disappear. Could someone please tell me how I can restore the missing memory?

I just bought a early 2009 MAC Pro and it came with 3GB of RAM, I ordered 3 2GB sticks of memory to replace the 3 1GB sticks that I had in there from Kingston. I turned off the unit, I popped the little levers and pulled the memory out of slot 1, 2, 3 and then replaced the memory with the new Kingston in slot 1, 2, 3
One of the sticks in is not working at all and I get the RED LED light no matter what slot I move that chip to. So I am running on 2 of the new Kingston memory chips.
Can I mix the memory and add the 1GB into slot 3 and 4 with slot 1 and 2 full of 2GB chips?
Also how to I run the memory utility again? I went to /system/Library/CoreServices/ and then I see the program Memory Slot Utility.app
How do I run this? I'm used to no spaces and I type ./then program name

I have heard that it is possible to increase a mac's or any computers ram by adding a high capacity USB memory drive to a open port. With special software the OS would write large infrequently used files to the stick and keep the most frequently used ones in the systems on board ram for greater speed.

This probably seem like a pretty n00bish question but I'm considering getting some SD ram for my macbook and I'm wondering if it makes a difference what kind you get?
I've had a look around and i'm unsure if it matters what format your computer is? As in can I take a ram chip from a pc and put it in my macbook?

I have a PowerPC G4 466 Mhz which has three "PC133" thingies in it, one 128 MB and two 256 MB, totalling 640 MB.
I want to change those to one, two or three 512 MB cards instead, but the manual says something about there being certain restrictions for 512 cards. Translated from Swedish:"If you install DIMM-modules of 512 MB they must have 256 Mb-units". What does that mean exactly and how do I check that they in fact have "256 Mb-units"?

My Apple ADC Studio Display has decided to stop all of it USB ports from working and as anyone who knows about these monitors you need to connect the monitor to a USB port to get the Brightness control to work, are there any apps out there which can control the brightness of the monitor up or down. I have played around with Calibration but I still cannot change the brightness of the screen. I have searched around for some solutions but all I have found is brightness controls which turn down the brightness but do not allow you to adjust the brightness up

I have a 2007 MacBook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of Ram (1x1) and recently upgraded the operating system to 10.5.8.
The problem is that the computer has slowed down considerably especially since I also installed CS5.
I'm thinkin that it is a ram problem and need to upgrade but through my research it states that my computer won't take anymore ram which is unbelievable. Can I install more ram or do something else to make it faster?

Can I install a second internal HDD or will I need to replace my current drive?

I'm not sure if this is cause for concern but it seems like my "free" memory has been really low as of late.
I use Safari and Mail 90% of the time. The other 10% is occasional iTunes use, MPlayer use, and Preview use. Is it time for me to upgrade to 4 GB of RAM?
Note - I do use the following extensions in Safari: AdBlock and YouTube5.
