OS X :: ICal Keeps Deleting Events - Duplicates Need To Be Resolved
Sep 10, 2009
We (the wife and I) both use our iphones to enter events on our calendar. We've set it up so that it should sync with mobile me (thus updating our mac and iphones). The problem is that things are getting deleted A lot! When I open ical on my mac, there are at least 20 "calendars" in the far left column (I didn't know we were creating a "new" calendar every time we used a new color for an event). Anytime we plug our iphones in the ical comes up saying that there are duplicates that need to be resolved. I hit ok. I thought I was doing the right thing.

I have a client's machine that keeps repopulating events to iCal even after they've been deleted. These are calendars that are stored locally. There are no accounts set up to sync with this machine and there haven't been any since the machine was purchased. Steps I have tried: Repairing disk permissions/deleting cacheResetting sync history (I know that's kind of dumb since it's not synching with anything but I'll try anything once. Deleting the calendars and reimporting themÂ
Additional Info: She was initially on a Tiger machine. We exported the calendars from that machine and imported them into another machine running snow leaopard. A few days later we exported from that machine onto her new machine running lion. Not sure if the file could have gotten corrupted during that process.

Trying to get them to talk to each other - I've input the Google account into iCal preferences, and it shows up fine. But I seem only able to sync one way - if I add an appointment in Google Calendar - then sync - it shows up fine in iCal. But if I add an event in iCal and then sync - it doesn't show up on the Google Calandar.

I try not to have iCal running because I've got the Dateline app that stays on my desktop. Mousing over that will give me appts and such as I need to have them.
I've found, that opening iCal and messing with the input screen for a new event is kind of cumbersome, and I'm wondering if folks have found a good way to create new iCal events w minimal interaction with iCal itself.
Today 2.5 offers this as a feature, but it's $25. Macworld also had a tip, but running that Automator action opens up iCal in the background.
Are there any other solutions out there?

Is there any way to do this easily? I mean, some kind of action like we can use on Address Book duplicates?

I have an iPod, but I just got a droid mobile phone, and I want to use them both for music. In order to get my "protected" songs purchased from the iTunes store on to the phone I have burned them on to cds and imported them as MP3s into iTunes. So now I've got over 100 duplicate songs (protected and mp3), and I want to delete the protected versions so that the remaining mp3 versions will sync with both my iPod and my droid phone.
If I delete these protected (purchased) songs from the library, will they remain in the iTunes Music folder on my pc or will they be completely removed from my hard drive, too?
Then, if they are completely deleted from my pc, is there any way to recover these deleted purchased songs if I ever wanted to in the future?

Two weeks after I migrated to Lion, I stopped syncing my iPad and iPhone through iTunes and turned on iCloud.I had 15 years of calendar data, and after the iCloud syncing, most of the entries were duplicated or even triplicated. It took me 5 days and about 5 hours with Apple tier 2 advisors to resolve the problem. The support communities had useful info, but it was scattered around.I am consolidating the useful stuff in this posting so that it may help others.
1.The important thing to understand about iCloud is that it considers itself the "master repository".Its primary purpose is to backup your data, but it cannot distinguish your data if it originates from multiple sources. My 3 devices (mac, iPad, iPhone) synced fine via iTunes. But when I connected the 3 devices to iCloud, iCloud did not continue from where iTunes left off.Instead, the calendars on the 3 devices were Merged in iCloud, resulting in duplicates. However, many repeating events (events that spanned multiple days) were not duplicated.
2.At this point, your calendar is corrupted.Don't try to fix a calendar while you are connected to iCloud (see why below).Your best choice is to delete the calendar from all platforms and then restore your pre-iCloud calendar from your archive or from Time Machine. First, disconnect your calendar on ALL devices (Apple->Preferences->iCloud->uncheck the calendar). This will delete calendar from those devices. Then go into iCloud and delete the calendar there (click the Edit button at the top of the calendar list and then click the minus button).
3.Restore your pre-iCloud calendar to your mac.Because this is pre-iCloud, all your calendars should be under the "On my Mac" section.Go into Apple->Preferences->iCloud->check the calendar.iCloud will start syncing immediately and your iCal will say "iCal - Updating" in the title bar. When it stops Updating, check your data. You will see that all of your calendars in the Mac are now in the iCloud section.
4. Add a test event and see how it updates on iCloud. Now go to your iPad and iPhone If you did step 2 correctly, both of their calendars should be empty.Turn iCloud back on on those devices through Preferences, and the data will sync to your devices.By default, the mobile devices only sync I think 2 weeks of data.I discovered that even tho I could get 15 years of data to sync to my iPad, the iPad could not display it.So I am going to have to tolerate having only a short period of data on my mobile devices and keep the whole archive only on my mac.TIPS I LEARNEDBackup your calendar and address book BEFORE you go to iCloud.Use the File->Export menus to export an archive of the whole calendar (.icbu) or whole address book (.abbu).In addition, you might want to export each of your calendars and address book groups as individual .ics files and .vcf files. This way, if you need to combine calendars, you can simply import a .ics file into an existing calendar in iCal.Why can't you delete duplicates while you are connected to iCloud?I tried to do that, and just when I got close to the very end, iCloud seemed to get confused, and then it suddenly put all the duplicates back.Several hours wasted. If you delete the calendar from iCloud and then try to restore it to your mac, it is very important to disconnect iCloud first. Otherwise, iCloud syncs the deletion back to the mac and deletes the calendar you just restored.Just remember, everytime you disconnect from iCloud, it deletes the calendar on your device. So the sequence must be:disconnect iCloud first, and THEN restore. When you turn iCloud back on, iCloud sees this as a whole new calendar.I was used to the replication idea of Lotus Notes, where the newest time stamp determined which event to keep in a sync conflict.iCloud does not work that way.It doesn't use timestamps and has no idea of latest event. It just merges everything. When you first turn iCloud on, if it asks you if you want to merge your Address Book, realize that iCloud will merge at the field level. So for a contact, if you made changes in work phone on two devices, that contact will now have 2 work phone fields. How to restore a Lion calendar from Time Machine:Â In Finder, go to the Go menu.Press the option key, and Library shows up in the dropdown menu.Select Library and then open the Calendars folder.Copy everything in it to a safe place and then delete the originals. Now, open Time Machine, and it will navigate to that hidden folder.Restore everything in the Calendars folder. How to restore a Snow Leopard calendar from Time Machine:If you have since migrated to Lion, use the method above to get to the Calendars folder and clear it out.Now open Time Machine and go to the Library->Calendars folder and restore everything in that folder.

I have a problem where I can't get rid of unnecessary events. The problem is with events which are repeated every period of time. When, I don't need them anymore, they refuse to disappear. I click delete, and get even the reminder: Deleting all future events. And when I confirm, and click OK, nothing happened. What should I do to erased these events definitely.

I am subscribed to a calendar on iCal, so iCal will not let me modify any of the events that I am subscribed to (states that it is "read-only"). Is there a way that I can change the settings so that I may able to modify it? Is there something I need to download in order to make this work?

Went to go look up an event and it's not there anymore or any past events! I had at least 4 years of appointments that I can't look up anymore. I use MobileMe, so it erased it there too, no I don't have a backup. I did upgrade to the MobileMe iCal. Anyone else having this problem? I've got a hold of MobileMe chat support and there looking into it, suppose to get back to me when they find a solution.

I'm trying to set up some automated reporting from my computer to my email when I'm out of the office. I've got the applescript set up to run when I send an email, but I'm trying to make it automated every hour or 30 minutes or something. Someone recommended iCal- I've got it able to run the script on each event, but I can't figure out how to make an event recur hourly.

I was looking for an old appointment in iCal and have realised that since I started using iCloud, all my previous events are missing from my Mac.  I have tried opening Time Machine but it doesn't seem to want to open iCal.If I untick all the iCloud calendars in iCal leaving only "On My Mac" ticked I end up with no events at all.

All of a sudden iCal from my Macbook Pro has stopped syncing up to iCloud, though events added on my iPhone and iPad are showing up fine on iCal. After poking around a bit I found the following (clicking on the little "alert" icon in the Calendars dropdown popped up the error).
The syncing stopped a few days ago and I don't remember making any major changes to my setup that might have triggered this. Restarting iCal and rebooting the computer didn't help.

On Leopard on more than one Mac I've noticed iCal cutting off the ends of some of the names of events when in month view. Happens whether or not I've got it set to also show the start time in month view. It may have been happening in Tiger too but I can't recall. Resizing my iCal window can get the full ext to appear in full on some days, but it just makes it disappear for other events.

I've recently updated my MacBook Air to the Lion OS (10.7.3). I've been frustrated over the fact that calendar events entered into iCal through my MacBook Air don't appear on my iPhone 4 (running iOS 5.1). However, when I create a calendar event on my iPhone, it does appear in iCal on my MacBook Air.Â
I've got iCloud running on both devices and have Calendars turned on. Both have the same iCloud account set up in the "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" setting.Â

ICal has decided it won't allow any more new Events, not from invoking New Event from the File menu and not from entering directly into the calendar itself. On click-drag in the calendar, a little box opens, just as though I were about to be able to enter a new Event, but on releasing the trackpad button, the box disappears.

I cannot find how to edit events in iCal. I should be able to "double click it" and then click Edit. However, no "edit" button appears.
Please note: this is a repeating event - is it not possible to edit them? This is needed for a monthly meeting that occurs at different places, so each individual instance should be editable with particulars for that event. Also, these events were converted from Outlook on Windows.

I have to clean up my calendars in ical.app. At the moment, there are around 10 different calendars mixed from fragments of an Outlook import, mobile phone import, Entourage fragments, new ICal calendars. Can I display all events of a calendar at once in a list, to mark and delete unimportant or double events? Is there a easier way, to edit multiple events from one calendar to another (I have to export a calendar, delete it after export in ical and import it in the calendar, I want it to live in)?
