OS X :: How Do I Print A File List?
Sep 6, 2007
I'd like to print the file names that are on an external backup so I know what is there. I've opened Finder and the relevant directory, but can't figure out how to print the pane (or file list).
I have Tiger 10.4.10 on a G4 powerbook.

I'm looking for an easy way to create a list of every file on a hard drive, and create a .pdf of it in OSX. It would be good to be able to omit some folders from this list as well.

I've come to my wit's end now - I've got about 10K plus of photos in my folder which I have nicely organized and grouped with different labels and comments. I would like to now convert the list of files with all attributes into a document. I've tried the copy and paste tricks with Textedit as well as several folder actions offered in Automator -to no avail as all I've got is just a list with file names which is more or less useless to me. It seems that during the process only the files names are copied but not other infos like label, size etc. Is there something I have missed here? I would be extremely grateful if someone could throw some light here.

I don't find keychain passwords always propagate to all my apple devices so I want to print a list of accounts and passwords for safekeeping. The export list item on the menu is greyed out. The files are binary so they're not easily read with a text editor. What are my options besides making back-up copies of the keychain files which, obviously, will become obsolete next time I add a password?

So in windows I can create a file list, save it to a text file, and create a .bat file with rename commands for each file. for example:
Rename 000055-060409232023-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000055.jpg
Rename 000056-060409232020-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000056.jpg
Rename 000057-060409232016-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000057.jpg
Rename 000058-060409232012-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000058.jpg
Rename 000059-060409232008-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000059.jpg
Rename 000060-060409232004-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000060.jpg
Rename 000061-060409232001-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000061.jpg
Rename 000062-060409231957-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000062.jpg
Rename 000063-060409231953-CAM1.jpg cal000image0000063.jpg
how do I create a file list and then create a way to batch rename in os x? I know the commands, but I don't know of a way to do it on more than one file at a time. I have found a few renaming apps but they all appear to be focused on just iterating up instead of renaming specific files to a new name.

how can I print a list of folder and subfolders from the finder window? I want to reorganize the contents and it would be easier to look at a printed list. I have too many folder and subfolders to do it well from the computer alone.

I use a text edit file as a to-do list; however, it doesn't play nice. When I click on its icon, it pops up somewhere other than where I want it. I've tried "Preferences" and TextEdit help on and off line. I can't find any info on it. I'm probably not using the exact words that 'help' would recognize. I've tried saying "Simon Says" too, but that doesn't work either.

Does anyone know if there is a way of having a list of image file names, searching for the images then putting them into a new folder? I'm guessing it can probably be done through mac scripting but I know nothing about scripting and genreally not great with technogy!

My external hard drive suddenly broke on me - the dreaded click of death - and now i am trying to gather as much information as possible about what i had on the drive. I have a slight idea, but i can't really remember everything. So basically what i am wondering, does Mac os x (SL in my case) store some kind of log file (text or similar) with information about what has been moved to external hard drives the past, say, 12 months?

I'm running Aperture 3.4.5 on a MacPro mid 2010. I import by reference into the appropriate project. The project's file directory is the same as the name of the project. I.E., screen shots from the Next Issue application are kept in a project called "Next Issue". The project keeps it's photos in a directory called "Next Issue". Â
As needs change files may be moved from one project to another. This causes a major problem as the files remain in their original location, i.e. are not moved to the directory associated with their new project. For example, the Next Issue screen shots show up in Photostream. I move the photos to the "Next Issue" project, but the original file still stays in the photo stream folder on disk.Â
The reason this matters is the disk with the pictures is duplicated and then connected to an Oppo media center. I find files I need on the Oppo by going to the directory associated with the files, i.e. "Next Issue". Since those files originally were in a photo stream directory they still reside there. So unless I can remember thousands of file locations it can't be found on the Oppo, which doesn't have a search function for an externally attached drive.Â
I suppose that I could go to each directory, select everything, and do a relocate master. But after a long night of organizing if I don't remember which projects where changed then that means relocating up to 100 directories and 70,000 files ….

I have a detailed hierarchy of folders and files that I need to print a table of contents for. Is it possible to do this through OS X (either by directly printing, or exporting to another file, etc.)? I'd hate to type out the whole thing if there's an easier way.
