OS X :: HD Full - Cannot Find Where The Space Went
Jun 27, 2009
My Mac Mini says it has a 56-or-so GB hard drive, and that about 54 GB of it is used up. If I try to use a program like JDiskReport or OmniDiskSweeper to find out what files are taking up so much space, they only find about 20 GB worth of files. I have only one partition on the hard drive. What else could be taking up so much space?

Bear with me if you already knew this, but after a few of years with OSX I've only just found it out (accidentally!)As in finder, where you can use the space bar to quick-look at files, you can do the same in Exposé hover over one of the windows and hit the space bar to get a full-sized view of it!

I've tried repairing and verifying disk permissions, verifying the disk, etc, etc, and even defraging the disk. I still can't make a partition in the HD with bootcamp or disk utility.

My MBP has an 80 gig internal hard drive that has approx. 1 gb free. The only media I have on the computer is approx. 40 gigs of music, all of my photos are on an external drive. How can I free up space without moving my music to an external drive?

So I must have partitioned this hard drive (it's still somewhat new), and now, when I try to resize it to its normal setting with no partitions, it tells me I can't. Here are some screenshots documenting what I'm talking about:
Original:
When I resize it:
The popup before I choose "partition":
The error message:
I understand that I'm trying to partition something with only one partition, but I could have sworn that just expanding the partition to make it full would take care of the problem and let me get back that unused space (all 200 gigs worth). How to reclaim that unused space without losing my current data?

I recently purchsed and set up an Iomega Storcenter ix4-200d NAS with Time Machine support. The NAS has 8 TB storage total, with ~4.6 TB available.I have TIme Machine support turned on in the Storcenter, assigned to a folder called "Time-Machine." In my OSX Time Machine preferences, I select the "Time-Machine" folder on my NAS as the back-up disk, and my Mac connects to it just fine. The challenge is Time Machine returns an error saying there isn't enough space on the backup disk to complete the backup. For some reason, Time Machine is only recognizing 536.36 GB of space available on the backup disk, even though there are ~4.6 TB available.I tried manually moving my iTunes media folder (~700 GB) to the "Time-Machine" folder on my NAS to see if the Iomega NAS was arbitrarily setting a max size to a Time Machine folder.I was able to manually move just under 1 TB of data to the same "Time-Machine" folder that Time Machine says only has 536.36 GB of space.
I tried deleting the Time-Machine store on my NAS, turning Time Machine support off, then turning it back off and creating a new "Time-Machine" folder.I did this several times and still get the same behavior.I even tried running Time Machine piecemeal, excluding larger folders at first and running a back-up, to see if maybe Time Machine wasn't liking that large of an initial backup. This worked, and then I gradually removed some exclusions and ran back-ups again, so each back-up size was never more than 200 GBs or so. However, after several back-ups, I received the same error message saying there wasn't enough space on the backup disk when the total sparsbundle size reached 536.36 GBs.Since I can manually move more than 536.36 GB of data to the backup disk, I'm guessing it must be something with Time Machine not recognizing the full space available on the NAS.

It says 12.6 GB of movies; I don't know where these movies are. I don't have any downloaded. How can I find them to delete them? I have also deleted all of my photos except three and it still says 11.44 GB. That docen't seem right either.Â
When I search my computer, files in Dropbox come up. But I thought those weren't included in my computer? (There are no movies on there, either.) I can't even download an update.

I am getting a warning on opening my mac saying I need more space as my setup disk is full. I have emptied many files as well as my Trash. I am planning to get an external drive for my photos, but it has been suggested that I check Console and under the system log the following message (of which they say 4000 messages have been logged in 2 days) '06/06/2014 16:08:23.341 com.apple.dynamic_pager: dynamic_pager: Need more space on the disk to enable swapping'. This is a copy of one of the items. It is from the system log. I really do not think I have enough files to warrant this warning, with the exception of photos. My storage shows 143 MB free out of 120.47.

Not sure, but for some reason my mac hard drive has got to be 95% full. I know where all the things I put on my laptop are and have added them up and they do not equal up to 132 GB of space. I have deleted the Previous Systems folder which was taking up a lot of space. Where are there more mysterious locations that are taking up space that are not needed and safe to delete?

Anyone out there have a solution to full mac HD issue?
Model Name:MacBook Pro Model Identifier:MacBookPro5,4 Processor Name:Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed:2.53 GHz Memory:4 GB
My mac has slowed right down with "start up disc full" warning. If I "get info" on mac HD it says capacity 249.72 Gb used 249.55 Gb free 166.7Mb If I "get info" on all users I cannot find more than 80Gb used. I have run Omni Disc sweeper and Disk inventory X and both show only 80Gb of files. I have used terminal to show all hidden files and run disc sweeper and disk inventory again with the same result. I have run disc utility > verify disc permissions, repair disc permissions, and verify disc. I also ran repair disc from the snow leopard startup disc.

My computer is a bit unorganized right now, and it will take some time to straighten everything up.
Is there an easy way of doing it? A program perhaps that takes every folder or file and arranges it from largest to smallest? Or something?
