I've tried repairing and verifying disk permissions, verifying the disk, etc, etc, and even defraging the disk. I still can't make a partition in the HD with bootcamp or disk utility.

I know where all the things I put on my laptop are and have added them up and they do not equal up to 132 GB of space. I have deleted the Previous Systems folder which was taking up a lot of space. In preparation for this, I created a second partition on my drive as a data drive where I will store things in order to make a time machine backup with the 120gb drive. Everything went as planned, except now, I cannot expand my data partition to use the whole disk. Below is a screen capture of what I'm talking about:Â
To accomplish putting my OS on only 120GB of hard drive, I've made symbolic links for most of the folders in my ~/ folder

As far as I can gather, the only way I can combine these partitions now is to re-format the entire drive, which as you can see would cause me many problems. How to expand a partition "upwards" for lack of a better term? I'm fairly new to Mac.
It seems like I'm always fluctuating between 2 and 9 gb of free space on my hard drive. Every time I need lots of space it seems to disappear, then it reappears in a week. Is this normal? If I'm low is there something I can run to bring this space back?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 500GB external hard drive that is partitioned into 3 sections - [1] Mac OS extended for dedicated time machine backups (200GB), [2] Mac OS extended for general file storage (100GB) and [3] FAT32 for backing up my husband's windows PC (the rest). I've been doing some video editing and moving clips between the external HD and my macbook. But now I've finished I noticed that something weird has happened. The Mac partition of the external HD currently has only 3 files, around 1.2GB. But Finder is showing 77GB is used and therefore not letting me copy my DV footage (around 40GB) that I want to transfer to a friend's computer.
I've put a screenshot here - and have hidden files/folders displayed. So what is taking up the 76GB that finder says is used?
I'm running out of space on my hard drive. In the past I deleted foreign languages and freed up some space.

I am a long time PC user that just recently got a MacBook Pro. I am out of space on my hard drive and not sure exactly what is eating up all the volume? I went to About This Mac and looked at the Macintosh HD and it says I only have 28GB out of 499GB available. The piece that is using up lion's share is all yellow "Other". How do I find out what is causing this? Is there an easy way to determine what file is chewing up my hard drive?

I have a 1TB external LaCie hard drive. Presently, it is loaded with about 300GBs of space so I should have around 650GBs left. However, it is only showing about 240GBs left. I think the problem is that I used to use this hard drive for Time Machine backups, I deleted them via the recycle bin. I checked the recycle bin, nothing there. I verified the disk, everything ok, I repaired it as well. I even erased the empty space.

I understand that I'm trying to partition something with only one partition, but I could have sworn that just expanding the partition to make it full would take care of the problem and let me get back that unused space (all 200 gigs worth). How to reclaim that unused space without losing my current data?
If I clear free space on my hard drive the OS is on the hard drive will still be fine. Also will it get rid of all my sensitive data that was not erased through secure erase.

I really need to free up space on the windows partition of my Mac so that I can install certain software I need in order to complete a project due really soon. What would be the best way to accomplish this (I'd rather not increase the partition w/ a third party app)? I was thinking the best is to eliminate unnecessary files that I am pretty certain were installed as part of the Vista install so that I can recover as much HDD space on the windows partition as possible, but don't know what I can eliminate safely? Can someone please offer some ideas and very basic steps of where to find any of the items you reference?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 17 inch MBP running Lion and Windows 7 with a boot camp partition. My mac side has 500GB of space, and my windows 7 partition has 250GB. Recently I shrunk my disk space on the windows 7 partition by going to Control Panel->searching "partition" and shrinking it, so now my boot camp partition has 132GB. However, I thought that space was going to be moved to my Mac OS X partition, but it didn't. Where is that memory space? It can't be flat out lost, can it? I also tried expanding it back but I can't click that option. I really do not want to lose those 118gigs. I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but I really need it.

I just got my new Seagate 640gb external hard drive and am in the process of formatting it on my MBP. However, I am not sure which format to do? My main use for the hard drive is for transferring media files back and forth between my MBP and PC using just one partition on the drive. I already know I'm not supposed to pick 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' because I believe that is to use it as a boot drive. So should I pick 'Mac OS Extended' or maybe 'Free Space'?

I've installed and uninstalled windows couple of times through the Bootcamp. when installing the Windows 7, it asks to format the partition so that the Windows can be installed. My questions comes here, I also restored the partition couple of times for no reason and whenever I restored it, I noticed that the space used by Windows never gets added back up to Mac Partition. So does that mean the space used by Windows will be just floating around? To simplify my question: After restoring the Windows partition, the space used by windows, will it be added back up to the Mac partition(to 1 partition)?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently got rid of a partition I had made for bootcamp since I never use it, and would rather have the space back. I deleted the partition through disc utility, and then through the partition tab, tried to get back that space by dragging down the tab to restore the space originally set for the partition. When I go to apply this change, it notifies that my hard drive will be re-sized. I accept and then a few minutes later it comes back with the error "Partition failed with the error: Filesystem verify or repair failed" Does anybody know how I can restore this space successfully back into my main hard drive? The new partition didn't get created, and I now have 100GB missing from the Hard drive. I have a 1TB hard drive, and when I go to Disk Utility, it says: Â Capacity : 999.35 GB (999,345,127,424 Bytes)Available : 586.1 GB (586,103,844,864 Bytes)Used : 310.52 GB (310,524,317,696 Bytes)Â
Which adds up to about ~900GB.
I tried Repairing Disk in Disk Utility, booting into Recovery Mode and Repairing Disk there, but neither made a difference.Â
